The Happy Fits saw my cover of Dirty Imbecile, and liked it, so I asked if I could cover Heart of a Dancer too, and they said yes. So, I wanted to do my best. Here we are, a year later.
There's always something I could improve, so I had to release it with things I'm not happy with, or it would never be released.
FAQ:
What software is that?
The DAW is Reaper. It has a ridiculously-generous free trial length, and is only $60 full price. Used by many industry professionals. Would highly recommend it.
Most of the plugins I used were eclectically-collected, and not necessarily the best tool for the job. For example, instead of trying to use my guitar chain exactly, I recommend you try to make it sound as good as you can yourself. You might do better than I did.
Superior Drummer 3 is what I used for the drums, and it's pretty good. Expensive, but less so than hiring a drummer. This song in particular needs a real drummer. There are too many specific techniques in it to properly emulate with software drums. The timing is also fairly difficult in some parts.
What guitar do you have?
I bought the cheapest ($180) Squier HSS Stratocaster I could find, plugged it into the cheapest XLR interface I could find that also worked with my SM7B (audien evo 4, $110), and used Amplitube 5, with some free cabinets.
This song exposes one of its weaknesses: I'm pretty sure the tone dials don't do anything. I wanted to adjust the tone for the quiet part, but it didn't change at all.

This is definitely the point where personally I couldn't care less about poe anymore, this channel can transform into nothing but covers and I couldn't be more happy, this cover is that good.
Agreed! The earlier work was great, but it was almost pure baritone. Much more flexibility and quality to the voice work now. Not sure if that is lessons or just choice of the cover song, but either way, great work!

Fwiw, I think using natural quality of your voice, i.e. in his case the extremely raspy tone, is a smart thing to do. Vocal range is surely interesting too but imho not required to make a great production.

Thanks for introducing me to The Happy Fits, been a mainstay in my playlists ever since your cover of Dirty Imbecile. Heart of a Dancer and Grow Back have been some recent favorites of mine, so I was stoked to hear this cover.
I've always got a kick outta listening to these outro songs but this one is by far your best so far, imo!

Listened to the original one and I have to say that this cover is a great improvement, specially the voice fits a lot better to the song, and also the electric bass with a bow instead of the cello fits better.
The voice in the original is good as well, but I love this version better.

I feel like your voice would also fit well with something like Misfits - Helena or She Wants Revenge - Tear You Apart. But since you can sing in languages you don't actually speak i would love to hear you sing a german song. I feel like you could do a good Farin Urlaub (Singer of punkrock band "Die Ärzte"). Otherwise absolutely fantastic cover as usual.

I definitely waded through a bunch of incorrectly-transcribed tabs in the process of making this. One of the reasons I included the tabs.
I'm still not 100% on the end of the guitar solo. It was really hard to transcribe by ear.
