R.I.P. Big Rick the gentle giant with a heart of gold. Former Las Vegas prison guard and arm wrestling champion he was a true Man's man and role model!
Legendary aw movie. Wish Sly would do a part two. You could certainly work it out that's for sure. It wouldn't be that hard. Especially where arm wrestling as a sport is on the rise right now and becoming very popular. Fingers crossed.
Don't know if Rick was ever World Champion, but I know he was California State Heavyweight Champion. They had alot of real World Champions in this movie, guys like Allen Fisher, Johnny "The Iceman" Walker, Dave Patton, Clay Rosencrans, and a few others. Back in 1980 they had the Nationals at the Dunes in Las Vegas, and anyone that made the quarterfinals or better was to have a small part in the film. Me and my little brother, John O'shea, both armwrestled for the WFAA, World Freestyle Armwrestling Association, based in the Santa Clara Valley in California. Lots of good armwrestlers there, Fast Eddie Stane, Ernie Martinez, Mike McGraw, Mike Bingel, Gary Stansbury, Willie "The Whale" Wallace, Dave Jepson, and of course John Brezenck, don't know if he was originally from Santa Clara County, but he was living in the Santa Cruz mountains when the WFAA used to all train together. John was one of the best that ever lived, as was Virgil Arciero, and Cleve Dean. My little brother, John O'shea was one of the best to ever come out of the Santa Clara Valley, but we both lost at the Nationals back in 80. I lost to a Cowboy who was the Montana State Champion in the match before the quarterfinals. That whole tournament was a bust, the original promoters, The Jeffrey Bros ripped off everyone that mailed in their entry fees, and disappeared. We had to pay entry fees again when we got to Vegas. Seems the only good thing that came out of it for me and my brother was we got to talk to Joe Louis, who was a greeter there at the Dunes. He was on his last legs, and was being pushed around in a wheelchair by a giant black guy, who made Rick Zumwalt look small if you can believe that ? It's true. RIP to both Joe and Rick, much Respect and Appreciation for both of you.....
This is so great! I saw this three times in the theater when I was a kid. Just loved this movie growing up. Don’t make ‘em like this anymore. Love the 80’s
this interview is such a night and day difference between today's interviews to back then. Love for what they do. They aren't saying stuff for click bait. Unreal how good of times it was
Bull Hurley. What a fantastic human being and I loved his role in the movie frankly he made the movie so great they needed someone just like him and he was the only one that could do it. Physically speaking he was a man amongst boys in the movie and that’s what made the final scene so great. I thought David mendenhall played his part perfect as did Stallone and everyone else. I was 13 when this came out and it’s always been one of my all time favorite movies. RIP Bull Hurley. Quite a gentleman.
Rick did sound like a really chilled guy. He had the humor in the movie 'Over the Top' but played a antagonist who was rude. From the interview he was sounded like a very funny, cool guy 😎
Most of the time, people who play bad guys are really good nice guys in real life, atleast some of the movies I've seen, example, Mr T as Clubber Lang, in Rocky 3
They used Rick’s likeness in the original NES game Track & Field 2. Which the arm wrestling in the game was based on Over The Top. Also, loved him in Batman Returns as the Strongman.
I was surprised to see this kid not crying after a couple of minutes. I know it was acting but damn for being a military cadette, he surely cried a lot. Had a drinking game back in college when we saw this movie pop up on TNT.
Also drinking game is every time they play "meet me halfway" song even the instrumental version cuz they play that like seven times throughout the whole movie. Lol
thank you for uploading this, for me it is worth gold, I am an admirer of Rick Zumwalt and there is so little of him on the net, thanks again and hoping that you will upload something more of him
R.I.P Rick Zumwalt. I love going back to this. I'll say it again. I really wish i could have met him when i was at the age this movie was made. Mind you i had nightmares about Bull Hurley a few nights after watching Over The Top back then! 😂😮😂. Movies like this made me always want to see & visit the USA. I still hope to before my times up!.
@@yazman75 Oh kk. I always wanted to visit the UK. I have Welsh heritage, and I'd like to see where my ancestors came from. I actually come from Welsh royalty, you wouldn't know it lol. Would have been nice tho if I grew up in medieval times and was royalty 😂.
@@harleydavidson1014 lol 😆 yes life would have been sweet for you back then being from Welsh royalty! . I'm from Preston, England myself. In the North West. Richard Lee Zumwalt Jr I just want you to know in Heaven that you have a huge heart and sincerely care about others , and you're a true Angel -- Richard Lee Zumwalt Jr !!!!!
Yeah same here, seems like most people who play bad guys in movies are really good nice guys, in real life, that's just how I've seen it, example Mr T as Clubber Lang, in Rocky 3
Rick is so insanely well spoken. I think the part at the end where Bull Hurley lifts up Hawk's arm to show good sportsmanship is a good nod to Rick's character.
LMAO the resemblance is uncanny. I've always thought that this was the most effeminate boy I'd ever seen. You'd think Sly would pick a harder looking kid to play his son.
Born in June of 71 so David would have been 15 being Over the Top was released in Feb 1987 and this press junket would have been done around the time of release.

Great interview
Rick had such a kind smile and sweet, quiet nature. Seems like he was a great guy. I wish he'd had a longer life.
Holy shit what a good actor Rick was..he is totally a different contrast from his on screen character of Bull..he was good at that role
R.I.P. Rick! Awesome wrestler and actor

He passed away in 2003. We still miss him whenever we see this movie.

Rick was a world arm wrestling champion and sly picked him so good
He also picked Hulk Hogan before he was a household name.
R.I.P. HUGE RICK.. MAY YOU BE IN THE KINGOM WITH GOD....
Rick Zumwalt couldn’t be more different in this interview than he was as Bull Hurley.
Most of the time, people who play bad guys are really good nice guys in real life, atleast some of the movies I've seen, example, Mr T as Clubber Lang, in Rocky 3

Wow this is cool back in the 80 s how young every body was

Rick Zumwalt was really funny on the episode of Perfect Strangers that he did.
Its the first time I see Bull Herly as a nice and polite person..!!! Incredible..!!! 😮
He said stay in school and dint do drugs
Way humble dude. That's cool
Sounds like he's regurgitating lines out of the Hulk Hogan playbook. All he forgot was the line about taking your vitamins.
But it’s ok for sly to shoot up with roids 😂
Awesome movie!!!
watching the movie sept 2023 thought id see how the cast are doing
wow this is pure gold
Nicest person ever
Little did we know the real Giants were guys like Cleve Dean, Richard Lupkes John Brzenk
They originally were going to cast Cleve, but they realized nobody would believe Stallone could beat someone that huge.
Great video
“You’ve been ducking me for years!”
You got no chance you know that? YOU KNOW THAT!!!!😂😂😂
Let’s see the extra and all footage outtakes etc etc for the over the top movie
Rick was great in this movie as Bull Hurley. Liked his guest appearance in Night Court as well. Sad that he is gone
The film was number one in England Japan australia France Belgium Russia you name it

Very cool ✌️
I know David Mendenhall as brother bear from the 1980s Berenstain Bears series

Great movie, one of my favorite Stallone films. But this kid was annoying as heck in this film.
Bull Hurley
Ótimo filme falcão os campeões dos campeões
Lucky he teached sly stallone very good
Totally opposite of his brutal character but that makes him a good actor in this movie
the more you look at rick he looks like a larger bruce willis. same mannerisms in way.
