Arcanum is also in my opinion the pinnacle embodiment of what a CRPG should be. There's nothing else that manages to be as good as this one, so many choices, so many consequences, so many places to explore... Arcanum is a masterpiece.
I know it's not perfect and the poison charged axe turning Into a poison sword but was annoying. But compare it with it's depth and magnitude of decision that make a huge change in the game, not just in the end. There is nothing like it. It is a great game, even better when you compare it to the garbage that came after.
BTW on your point at 49th minute, about why use swords when you have guns, well guns and swords were used in conjunction since the 15th or 16th century, every arquebusier had a sword, every musketeer had a sword, up until the first world war, swords and guns were used next to each other, so basically this is a non issue
Combat always has the potential of falling back on traditional melee, no matter the time period or circumstance. The bayonet was invented so that an entire army could be armed with muskets and could still accept a charge without the need of dedicated pikemen.
for 42:50 is that quote could be "there are many reasons. humans in comparison with the other races, live such short lives. because of this, I believe that every human action is motivated through fear... the fear of death. you would think that this was a relative issue... that humans would learn to live with this limitation and accept it. this is not true... and , therefore, humans, when confronted with any situation, see it through the veil of their own mortality. achieve, advence, perfrom... humans constantly driven by shadow of their own death. this fear, unfortunately, clouds their judgement, deadens their sense of right and wrong. humans act first think later and feel last of all..."
I died to the wolves. Right after leaving the crash site. I was 8 or 9 then and maybe didn't really understand what I was doing. Still learned and became a murder hobo..emptied Tarant coz magic armor woman (?) didn't want to share items and killed them to gain access to their item chest and the rest of the city went up in arms. And I found it really fun (especially when I stumbled onto the graveyards and trains at the end of the tunnel). Fast forward to my uni days and the game started to go around again and I played it again..and BAM the lore suck me in! Racism, conspiracies, labor unions, intellectual property infringements, and pacifism entered my cognition and I realized how (age-appropriately) shallow I was when I first played it on my older bro's PC.
13:45 funny story. I played arcanum when i was little and i had no idea how to use the world map so i walked to shrouded hills... Must have taken an hour, but i did it :))))
@51:00 You are speaking of the war between Tarant and Durnholm. It's true that in the early battles the Durnholm knights were able to charge and scatter the Tarantian peasant soldiers, many (but not all) were using rifles. However in the long run mass, concentrated fire by cheap peasant soldiers using basic rifles utterly slaughtered and destroyed the Durnholm knights.
Great work, with such philosophical insight! I heartily appreciate it. Plus, "SCIENCE!" is my new ringtone. I shit you not, ripped the video, cut out the "SCIENCE!" part and converted it to .mp3. Hilarious.
I know I’m two years behind but this is the Aracanum video I’ve been looking for. 100 percent subscribed. I’m looking forward to watching the rest of your channel
For those that want to try out science, there is another super strong build no one ever talks about, but be mindful that early game will be extremely difficult. In I think it was Tarant the shopkeeper keeps restocking the engine to build automatons when you sleep, or exit and re-enter the town. Automatons don't count towards max party limit, you can build an unlimited amount as long as you have the money, as well as have a full party. However, the game engine begins to lag at around 18, although this was a very old PC. I had the most powerful gun in the game, but never needed to use it. Make sure to keep track of shop keepers when selling stuff, as sellback prices drop as you sell more to said NPC, if you want to amass the gold to build your automaton army.
I realize that I'm late to the party, but I love this game so much. The soundtrack has this amazing melancholy feel that just hits the right counterpoint. What's more there is excellent replay value. There's lots of ways to handle this game. Different schools of magic, different types of tech, skill focused, weapon focused, charmers, and the good old dumb half-ogre brute. Each of these types of play features some hidden gems to somebody that wants to look for them. More replay value than any other similar game.
SPOILER He was, actiually he might've confused it with the fact that guy that gives you Bates ring, Stennar Stonecutter looked like gnome but was dwarf.
Recommended build for beginners: “The funny disk slinger” Human Charlatans protege 20 dex 20 cha 20 beu Other skills optional. ----- Main skills: Throwing (expert) Persuade (expert) -------- Learn to craft: Molotovs -------- Starting Equipment: Boomerang (Use weapon type) Best weapon is the aerial decapitater
NIce coverage, beaten the game, read some about it, and watched other people play, and I still learnt as well as realised new facts about the world of Arcanum. Cheers A fetching jacket, by the way
CRPG is an acronym for Classic Role Playing Game in contrast to jRPG - known as Japanese Role Playing Game.I won't get into the details, but the philosophies governing these genres are very different, warranting the distinction between them.
Jrpgs stem from a simplified wizardry for children, dragonquest. They tend to have no character costumization, and no choices, barely warranting the name rpg. Western compuiter rpgs stem from attempts to digitize dnd, and usually focus heavily on mechanical complexity. A central plot is a relatively late addition to the genre, an genenrally takes a backseat to you dealing with various sideplots as you please.
I love playing a tech guy with an elephant gun and "power armor". Never played a mage, it's really hard playing the tech gun guy at the beginning. Still loved it, made me feel so good when I finally became strong and unstoppable :D
This is the first game of its kind that I played back in 2001. I still remember how it felt really cozy when I heard ben hogue's theme music matched the scent of air freshener of the cafe where i played it. Drawn by curiosity until I fell in love with the gameplay and story.

Great rumination on a great game. I remember a friend of mine, who had started playing the game before me, decided to be a mage. He told me that playing a mage with the Harm spell (I think that's what it was called) becomes stupidly overpowered.
I love it to bits . I still play it from time to time. I've started in 2001 . This is one of those games where the chemistry , crafting and magic system made it so enjoyable to start multiple char. Try out so many different companions , quests and optional tasks.
I almost restarted Arcanum after getting stuck at the bandit bridge encounter. I was playing as an autistic savant released from a mental institution and focused on technology early game. Eventually I manage to scrap together like 4 or 5 traps, which I setup around a stationary Virgil armed with only a staff. I then picked a fight with the bullies at the bridge and lead them in a circular chase around Virgil and the traps. Virgil managed to knock a few of them out while they chased me. Though no other npc would join my party because they thought my character was retarded. Relying on a collection of guns and automatons and Virgil, I managed halfway through the game before it crashed and I quit the unpatched game. Best underdog origin story ever. I like how everyone treated my character like a retard, and how he used engineering and tactics to overcome physical weakness.
Wow, one hour seems too short when talking about Arcanum, world of secrets and lies. Great game. Love this game, so deep and I would throw my money for a remaster with better balance and more locations. I would also add female romance, gnome and halfling females to choose from and maybe better balancing with Firearms, it's actually much more beneficial when you don't invest in Firearms technology and just go with skills/stats. Not to mention companions could use little balancing when choosing what skills/magic/technology they should invest in (Virgil have both magic and Pick Locks that is not the greatest combination). I am little bit dissapointed that you didn't mentioned Dernholm and Maximillian, one of the most memorable NPC and quest in this game. But then many quest in this game are memorable, like Half-ogres you mentioned, so dark. Liked your theory about the Void, my own theory, regarding all those ancient civilization stuff, that Void is Arcanum of the future when perfect balance between magic and tech was achieved and it transformed world into something different. Btw. Gilbert Bates was a human not gnome. I liked one thing, it was said that humans don't live long to witness effects of their choices while GB clearly lives long enough to witness it and he feels remorse over the blackmountain clan. When playing as mage, invest in dark necromancy, time, conveyance and force. Best schools (edit* also mental, stun spell is great when fighting). I wish this game was bigger, more quests, enemies, items, magic etc. A testament to a great game, I finished it and I want more.
Forgot to mention about one big plot hole or plot problem with Arcanum, spoilers ahead. When you go with the plot you need to reach city of Elves. Normally you need to ask one of the two elves about it. If you are the Elf you should know it already, even one of the elves says that but our hero says that he/she came across the sea and that's why he/we don't know. Kinda a problem with the plot.
Just like city dwarfes, there are city elves. They don't know jack shit about their culture. Imagine Magnus as an elve. Possible explanation. Or maybe just lost memory due to the blimp crash, which would be a cheap explanation.
i heard you talk about this on your lorerun waistland 3,, and in here you mention your steam of this game,, i cant find it.. also welcome back from the long dark.. hugs
That's the most bizzare problem to start a game ever. I mean, as you describe, I've seen glitches, and graphical errors, but I've never seen a game actually crash the actual monitor. hell, I've never seen a monitor crash - and you know that i've worked, and futzed around with computers for a long time. I kinda wish you had footage of that, because I'm just so damn intruiged at how that looked and not only that, but how you came up with the idea of hooking it to your ps4. Still, I am glad your monitor ain't broken!
The reincarnation thing reminds me of the RPG Kult. It’s a very gnostic world where the « reality » is a prison for human souls, and there really less souls than there’s curent population but since time is an illusion your 3 doors down neighbor might be your reincarnation
Damn, I haven't played this for almost 10 years and I forgot almost every detail of this game. Sadly, as much as I'd like to go back, I don't think I'd have time to play it anymore
Whats for the green screen at the back? I thought i gonna show some actual random gameplay or examples of what the hell are you talking about, and im staring ur head for a half an hour? Seriously!

Found this in a bargain bin when I was a kid, one of the best purchases I've ever made.

hello Lorerunner, I have a question, have you played Gothic 1 or 2 ? and if yes, did you like it?
really cool to see someone discuss this game in such great detail, I still hope that one day this game will get a sequel or a remake
I love this game. Great story. Great music.
Thanks for this Rumination.
The technological progression of a high fantasy setting is really a rare and interesting concept. That was one of the great aspects of Avatar.

Oh boy! I've been waiting for this one. talk about interesting lol
so the dwarf are like the dwarves in dragon age origin
I just bought it for 5 dollars on steam and so far I'm liking it but for some reason the fps keeps dropping. It's incredibly annoying.

Arcanum is like poe ? BWAAAHAHAHAHAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHA
Yeahhhh I can't see much similarity there

Arcane is not the base word arcanium is. Its latin.
The Latin word is Arcanum, oddly enough. I don't think "arcanium" is a thing. It would be pronounced arKAHnum (roughly) in Latin.
its ARcanum
