I'm a huge Rover fan, and of the two I prefer the convertible (if it was in good running condition), but I agree with you, it has to go. The Volvo is most definitely a keeper. And there's so many decent R8s still around for sensible money, it isn't really worth pouring money into a bad one.
The Convertible was only ever a save the car project as there are only about 300 cabrios left, the other Rovers are staying though, the Volvo will stay until something I really want appears, but not in a hurry
The radio bay is felt lined, because the car didn't come with a radio. So that bay was a storage box if you didn't bother to fit a radio. They made life easy. All the wiring, speaker fitrings and antenna, were present. You just needed to pop suitable speakers in the doors, and a stereo in the dash. There were mounting kits available for standard size stereos.
Such a radio surround is easy to get. For example you can search for "Volvo 740 760 940 960 Car Radio Stereo Facia Adapter Converter Trim plate" on eBay and get one for £12. Cable adapters are also easy to get. Just keep in mind that there are two different connector types, so get the one that looks correct (they're easy to tell apart). One thing to be prepared for is that the radio sits quite far forward with such an adapter, so you must get a radio that sticks out as little as possible. Otherwise you'll get what's sometimes called "740 knuckle", where you hit the radio quite hard when shifting into 3rd gear
Petrol Gremlins came and urinated into your tank. I dated a woman in my younger days who owned one of these though it was a bit older. At the time (1980’s ish) I only had a motorcycle. When I first got in and drove it I thought I had gotten into an army tank by mistake. After a few miles I would get used to it and then felt the same as you, it became a fun car to drive.
Great to see that lovely Volvo back. They are terrific cars, and fabulously long legged. Over the years, my old 240 has done a number of thousand mile plus trips, which helps explain the 400,000 on the odometer. You will never find a better car for winter weather. With good tyres, they go through almost anything. The heaters can melt your shoes. My main task this afternoon is finding proper winter tyres for Arthur. Not many made in a 195/75R14 anymore, but unless I find a good set of 15 inch steel wheels, that is what I am stuck with. As for the radio, Volvo factory units are good noise generators, and that is about it. There may also be an external amp. There is on the AM/FM Cassette in Arthur. The whole system is a low line Clarion, so yes, switching to a better head unit and speakers is definitely in the cards. When it comes to the Rover, you are at the point where doing anything is throwing good money after bad. Cut your losses, part it out and scrap the remainder.
Its amazing how water will find it way into places that are not deemed badly sealed. I had a Merc ML followed by a VW Touareg both with the same problem, the drainage tubes in the internal body of the car (underneath the roof guttering and in the door panels got clogged so the water just pooled on the rear floor. When it first happened Merc had to strip the complete car down to find the source.......when it happened on the VW I told the garage check the tubes Which they raised their eyebrows) and it was the same problem, both cars were 6 years old!!
A few months ago i bought a Volvo 780 that had been standing since 2014. Took me just a new battery to get it started. All old school Bosch electonics. As for your radio: you need to spray the internals of the potentiometers (volume control, bass, treble, balance) those contact tracks will be dirty. Once cleaned the radio will be OK. You tuning control is probably just a wire that has lots some tension. Those often has a spring in it. Maybe try replacing th a t spring with a tighter one?
Rover = Hub Nut My uncle used to own a 1988 Volvo 760 GLE Roman and he brought it back to Ireland in 1990 and now Ive owned for the past few years. Alpine pull out radio in mine yours is more likely a Clarion unit Throw the Rear/ front side lights into the Dishwasher and you will be surprised how well they come up. Rear speaker cable was damaged in the rear door pinch point hence no speakers Blauphunkt do nice Retro radios if ur interested which fit easily Ive 268000 miles up on it now and shes still chugging along & still love it BRILLIANT CARS
great to see the Volvo - beautiful old Nordic longboat that it is. As for the Rover, the potential is certainly there, but sometimes you have to balance the desire to keep a machine on the road with the sometimes high emotional cost of attempting that.

Sorry that Rover Cabrio is still giving problems, can understand you wanting to throw in the towel on that one. Glad to see the Volvo is back on the drive, and still working just as well as it did before it's holiday.
You need to test if you have a live on the fuel pump feed at the pump end it is only live for 2 seconds when the ignition is on it should be white/purple if not you need to test the relay input output to see where the connection is being lost.
Hi Matt,I can't believe the Rover won't start, while the Volvo does it without problems,sell everything separately to get your money back,fingers crossed it does turn,keep the Volvo.
I don't wish to tempt fate, but I have owned the same Volvo 850 for 26 years and other than flat batteries and one time when the batter lead failed, it has NEVER failed to start. And this is with my basic maintenance. Many Volvos will last 30 years / 300k miles plus with regular maintenance - not than many keep them that long in this fashion-conscious age.

Nice video as always. You really are tenacious in a good way, but every mortal man has his breaking point, even if yours is way beyond what most people can muster. My thinking, as well as others I am sure, back when you got the Rover, was that condensation, oxidation and other (electrical) problems would be quite grave, even if the rust wasnt that bad. I will not tell you to put more money into it, but I hope you can let it rest for a while, unless you get a great offer. Maybe after a few weeks, you have the energy to start digging into the electrics. Maybe it wont even cost anything more to get it sorted. Maybe it will even dry out by itself by some miracle and start working again? Stranger things have happened. In any case, I hope you succeed, if there was anyone I would put my hope into being able to soldier on and bounce back, it would be you. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you, Matt. Whatever you decide to do, I will keep watching.
If the Rover exhaust is described as fitting the convertible ie fits all models and doesn’t then under Ebay rules the item is “ Not as described” and the seller is liable for the return postage not the buyer, you have to open a case and go through the process which takes a couple of weeks but you will get your money back, this happens all the time and sellers routinely try and make the buyer pay for return postage when it is the sellers mistake. Usually the seller will not pay for the postage and will just refund the price .Its very important to select “Not as described” when opening a case if you say it doesn’t fit then you become liable for the postage
Yaaay for the Volvo - keep driving, safe and furious! Nay for the Rover Cabrio - too bad he rewards you with more & more problems... From what I experienced so far; if you fiddle with stuff that was left as-is, alone .. it is ought to require attention (from mufflers to pumps in the window washer reservoir etc.).
I remember the first video of the Rover and I thought then that it was a bit past it, the Rovers are great but that particular one seemed a bit more trouble than it was worth. Love the Volvo...

Hopefully you can claw some money back it and chalk the rest up to experience. At the end of the day, at least it’s made for some interesting content! Fuelgage on the 240 and 740 drops in increments, I allways got questioned when returning my fathers 244GL -81. I filled it in the evening to the level it was when I borrowed it and it was allways lower when they started it the next day. Once I got one myself I found that it dropped in quiet large increments. Volvo sold fronts and cable adapters for DIN radios, You should be able to find such parts in the aftermarket or at a scrapyard.
The Volvo is a car that for most becomes a family member. They are loyal like a faithful dog and there shouldn’t be any hesitation in keeping her on the fleet as a dependable classic. This and the Tomcat have become the staples of Furious Driving for most I reckon. I agree the Rover should be auctioned off via tickets to viewers. Squirting contact cleaner around liberally near a mechanical dial drive for a radio (which relies on cord friction around the tuning spindle) normally ends in tears, Matt... I don't know what to say about the Rover; somehow giving the thing a true "Viking Funeral" whilst apt, would be incredibly expensive.
What he said... you probably have a pulley somewhere in the dial cord path that has too much friction, or the sliding pointer, or possibly the capacitor itself. The knob likely has a brass shaft with 2-3 loops of dial cord around it, and it just can’t provide enough force to move the cord. Then again, if it could, the cord might simply break. If you don’t want to replace the radio, see if you can trace the cord path and look for where it is hanging up.
Hmm, or perhaps not? The closeup of the tuning mechanism seems to show a more complicated connection behind the knob. I wonder how that works. The preset buttons look mechanical, do they work to move the tuning?
@@BillOwens315 Usually there's a clutch assembly to disengage the knob when selecting a push-button to stop it turning (which I think is that chunky white nylon assembly) - plus I think we might also be seeing what the other concentric knob operates. It'd be nice to actually see the thing in detail and in pieces on a bench, don't you agree? Things like this are usually permeability-tuned though rather than having a variable capacitor.
You sound a bit dispondant matt. Take a deep breath and go back again. Your silly spunking it away as a non runner. Check for power at the relay, then bridge the relay with a paper clip I think it's 30 - 31 see if the pump kicks in, then see if your getting a trigger signal and trace the wires back cutting the loom open if needed..
Are they separate relays on this era of 200 or those multifunction relay units? A bit more fiddly to identify and bridge across contacts, if it’s the MFRU
Did he put his coffee cup down a bit close to where he was spraying the contact cleaner? It's drinking too much contact cleaner if your coffee that makes you buy dodgy Rover cabriolets!
I have a couple of cars out in the weather waiting to get fixed. The best thing I've bought in a long time is a dessicant dehumidifier, £120. The standard compressor dehumidifiers don't work in low temperatures but the dessicants do, though they are more expensive to run. My '98 Passat estate has leaking door-rubbers and there was a lake in the rear footwell. Kept drying it out with towels and fans but the dessicant has cured it. Initially, it took 10 litres of water out when set to Max! Now, it's kept the interior dry and after a Febreezing, it stays fresh in there. I've set it to 'low' and it pulls out a litre a week, but that could be because the doors aren't air-tight and I'm trying to dry the planet out.
@@furiousdriving Plugged in. I have a cable in through the boot from an outside socket. It operates on humidity and you can set it to whatever you need. It's an 'EcoAir DD1 Simple'. I bought from eBay as 'Graded', or new ones are on Amazon for £150. Been worth every penny.
Don't give up on the Rover yet, it seems to me that the damp has played havoc with any electrical contact on it. Surely amongst your many fans there is an auto electrician who can help you out, at mates rates of course. May be as simple as a damp or dirty plug in the loom somewhere now that you have exhausted other possible faults. Keep your chin up.

Whatever you do, NEVER sell that 740 Matt: that and the 145 (once fixed!) are the best cars on your fleet! 🙂 With regards to the cabrio, I'm sorry to see that it's giving you grief, but I'd reccomend perseverance, as it will be all the more satisfying once it's finally put right, especially given how rare R8s are now. It's worth checking if the Rover has an inertia cutoff switch. Having changed out three fuel pumps on my MG this week (original dying, new one dead out the box, working second hand from a scrapyard) the first start after changing in a functioning pump was fine. Then the cutoff switch would engage and the car wouldn't run until I'd reset it. After that all good. With that car its probably something more irritating (because its the hateful R8) but its worth checking. You'd be kicking yourself it was something that silly! If not sell it on, its be a shame to scrap it however its not worth the stress.
Try just walking away from the Rover and put the keys in a draw until spring. You never know what is around the corner and it's hard to work on something that keeps dragging you down constantly. It's like those bastard jobs that are driving you crazy and removing skin from your knuckles that you return to the very next morning and boom it works perfectly first time.
Agreed. You have to know when to walk away for a bit. Easier said than done though! For me, when I start losing or dropping tools - it’s time for a tea break 😂
On the Rover the relay is often the problem as the connections themselves break down (the solder). It is an easy fix and quite common for this engine. It is not the pump as that is new so can only be this common fault. The car is good I bet just a basic connection issue. Mine is a bit sluggish at the moment if I leave for a couple of weeks and will need to run some solder in there at some point but yours sound like it needs attention now.
Get the bottom sprayed with oil and not any kind of rubberized or hard coating. Those actually increase the amount of rust by attracting and holding moisture as they age
@@MeDicen_Rocha Matt had to do quite a bit of welding to get the 740 MOT'd, and welding is a skill Ian yet needs to acquire. But if you would offer Ian a Volvo estate with a five-pot engine for a HubNut price, I don't think he would turn that down!
Swap over the fuel pump relay again on the Cabrio - with the shock of dealing with the new fuel pump activity - and the miserable wet and damp weather - I reckon it's gone rogue on you.
My suggestion with the Rover would be to go around all the electrical connections and earth points and clean them all up thoroughly as, after having sat for many years, there's going to be a very good chance of there having been a build-up of corrosion on them... Have a good think about what you do with the Rover as it's very easy to make poor decisions when you're very fed up... The front panel on the Volvo stereo, if I remember right a Phillips unit, is removable. I believe it is screwed in place where the normal flat front panel used on aftermarket units would be. I suspect your issues are more likely to be down to bad speakers or bad wiring to the speakers, the stereos themselves are usually pretty robust so, if they're working, they usually work pretty well...
Just have a look at the connectors of the radio, the white one is the main one including the front speakers, the grey one is for the rear speakers, it doesn’t seem to be connected.
furiousdriving if you want to fit in a DIN-Radio look out for Volvo 240-DIN Adapters, the 740-adapter I got first just had cables for the rear speakers.
Interesting that he uses the clunk of the central locking as a sign of the 740's reliability. I bought one new in 1985, had it for 7 years, and the only things that ever failed (after an initial "new model" bug was shaken out) was the central locking.
I had a similar fuel problem on a xsara picasso. Had to cut hole under seat like you.. I then had to bodge a separate switch run wires from battery to switch with online fuse then onto the fuel pump. To diagnose take pump out and see if it will run from the battery just to make sure the pump isn't defective. Hope that's some help
@@furiousdriving on the picasso I couldn't find why they pump wouldnt work but by bypassing everything with a switch it got it working but trying to remember if you have switched the pump off after parking car up had me go back to make sure on more than a few occasions. But if it gets it running its worth trying since the access hole is already there lol.. Fingers crossed it works
iknow this may sound stupid but have u tried lockingtherover with the remote and unlocking it? some times they need a refresh of the key to de activate the imoboliser...if u have dont that have u tried deactivating the imoboliser with the key and its door lock and the code....?
Great to see the Volvo back. It's one of my Furious fleet favourites (along with the Mini and the Tomcat) and glad to see it behaving. Really sad about the Rover as it seemed like you'd cracked it with the new pump. Has Mr Lloyd's pal Mr Coleman had a look? He seems like a chap who knows Rovers.
perhaps you can find someone willing to help you with the rover, sounds like a fuse or something, but considering the work done i feel its so close to being a runner as soon as the fuel is sorted, perhaps the connector for the fuel pump is tired n needs a clean, take a break from the 200 n have some fun tinkering with another project!
Good to see the Volvo again, the interior always seem bright and comforting. I think that is one of working on cars or general projects lessons if you don't enjoy it then cut your losses. With the Rover give it up and you could get and MGF instead haha. It will be interesting to see when the w123 works how the Volvo stacks up against it and which you prefer or keep!
Get rid of the Rover and enjoy the Volvo. You should never think of all the money you've poured into a project if it's really going nowhere, it's called the "sunk cost fallacy". You'll never going to recoup the money, it will just cost you more money, time and energy if you continue.
On these cars every door has a door contact switch. Switch type is dual switch. So other post goes to interior lights and other to the central locking. This means that even if youre interior light works, central locking may not. You can not use normal switch. Switches are easily cleaned even they are quite cheap and readily awailable.
There is a British firm called Autoleads which makes ISO/DIN stereo mounts for all types of cars including Volvo 740. They also have adapter cables for vehicle specific connectors to standard ones. If you want to put in an aftermarket unit.
The adapter cables makes it so easy to install a standard radio in an older Volvo. It only takes a minute to install, including fitting a single DIN facia.
When you was testing using your multimeter the other day, I noticed that the voltage looked like it was around 6V it needs 12V I wonder if you have a poor ground or poor connection on the positive side of the system, if I’m right about the voltage you got of course. Good luck.
That was the 850's starting with the estate 855, before that they ran the 240's, never raced the 740, 940. Some runs in Sweden right now as rallycars, but in it's own class as it is quiet a "barge" to get around narrow corners. At least they are rear wheel driven unlike the 850 that where front wheel drive.
As someone has said.... how about a raffle for the Rover where Matt ensures he has enough money to recoup his losses plus lets say an extra £500 for transport locally to someone who actually wants it. I'm willing to donate a quid or so for something that I don't want if it helps Matt get himself out of the hole the car has put him in? Just an idea?
I know exactly how you feel about the convertible I've come to that stage many times with my 75 and P38 before my advise is step back and let yourself calm down and who knows it may miraculously fix itself like the merc 🤣
Does the new fuel pump have a separate earth point? If not, the fuse for the fuel pump would be first to check right? It's been working upto now, but if you jiggled something when the car was on the jacks for the exhaust change, maybe it's earthed somewhere?
why don't you get a continuity tester on the wire before ripping it all out. because if it isn't the actual speaker, or the wire in the door hinge section I'd be very surprised.

About the Rover 216, try the Rover club to see if someone is interested, and see if they can finish repairs you started. I know you are well rid of it, and I certainly cannot blame you as Quentin keeps giving the gifts that keep giving, but it is rare in the UK 🇬🇧. The Volvo is definitely a keeper; I still think you should sell the classic Mercedes, to which your money 💷 could be spent on keeping the Volvo fit, and in good condition. Definitely find out information on where water can enter the boot, as I am thinking yes, could be the taillamp cluster(s) or the seal around the boot lid and boot area. As you well know, lubricant is essential to keep rubber seals supple and protect the interior from the elements. The 2.3 litre Volvo 4 non-turbo delivers linear performance, most likely due to fuel injection. Being in the US 🇺🇸 I never felt these vehicles were large (try driving a full-size American vehicle, a truck or something like the size of a Suburban), but interior wise, they were spacious and comfortable. Everything will slowly fall into place, be patient. If patience is lost, walk away like other have stated, and then continue with repairs. The Rover started out as a hopeful project, but sadly, not the case in the end, but I don't want to see it parted out but running due to all the hard work, time, effort, money you put into it.
If you own a 'fleet' of old cars then some sort of dry storage is almost essential. Old cars left out in the rain are going to either die (convertible) or go smelly (volvo). I understand that you have to own multiple cars if you want to have a RUclips channel but storing them and having to work on them outside is just going to become depressing when it goes a bit wrong. Making a video that says I left my volvo out for 2 months and it's gone musty and I left my Rover in the rain and it's now dead is not particularly engaging viewing either. Maybe you could find a space to share with one or two other youtubers as I know Kent is expensive. Working outside is ok when you are a penniless student (I've done that) but when you grow up the novelty wears off!
I, and many others very much like viewing these videos. The fact he hasn't got a storage unit costing £500 a month and is just a normal family man who likes cars is great. Not many people can afford to rent or own a storage unit for cars unless its a business.
Can't clearly see that radio housing, but can't you pull the knobs off, undo the nuts behind (on the rotary controls), then re-use the housing on another radio? Used to be a standard (DIN something or other) fitment before everything became manufacturer specific. Have to work out the wiring though, but it's only the speakers and power...
The size of the radio is standard DIN, but this one, the front face is all one part and the buttons are unique to each model. I need a surround to fit around a standard model
Sorry about the Rover, but can't win them all. The best place you could have used the switch cleaner is on the connector which you unplugged. Spraying switch cleaner randomly around the inside of a radio/cassette player is not a good idea and could cause more problems, including causing the tuning dial to slip. If I still had a workshop I would have sorted it for you (gratis), although besides the tuning problem, I recon the problems are in the external wiring. These were good radios, with a much better sound than the modern sets which have class D (digital) audio sections.
My goodness that cabrio is a pain in the backside, I feel for you. The Volvo on the other hand is brilliant. Solution: out with the cabrio, in with a second Volvo to keep this one company :-)
Yours seems to have a much longer loom than mine, but mine has a small single din cage not the big gap like yours. Mines the 88 GL, with a shiney new 96 b230fk dropped in. Would you ever try making it faster?
This model Volvo must have been designed for the US market with that near vertical rear window popular at the time in the States , which never really grabbed me have to say . I guess its not as bad as grafting the rear of an Austin Sheerline onto the back of a Cadillac .
Speakers are probably rotten. On my car the center cone was completely separated from the outer edge of the speaker as the plasticy material had just dissolved over the last 30 years. Would be worth just replacing them all, arent very expensive to do.
I was planning a speaker upgrade for it, they dont sound as bad as the fallen apart speakers in the Coupe which had that fuzzy sound, this needs the wires sorting first!

We all know the feeling. Getting rid of it would be my thing (cut my losses and move on). Would keep the volvo though (even though I dont like it) You seem to like it a lot! This hobby is about loving what you do ;)
Shame the Rover has pushed you over the limit. Would have been great to see it brought fully back to life, but can totally understand giving up on it. Only so much you can do! Good to see the Volvo again...although no-one deserves having Heart as the only station. That's torture!
Enoughs enough despite it being an enjoyable series of videos! Go for quality not quantity for R8 ness focus on the tomcat, plus the Merc and Volvo, P6 and maybe another new project? Figure out the best was to maximise the value in the cabrio.
Don’t give up on the rover. 1. It’s good content for the rover followers. 2. You’re channel does better when you fix something rather than drive someone else’s pride and joy. The rover may be difficult but deep down you know you want to conquer it rather than let it go to someone else. The old merc was a problem child and you battled through. It’s all about content and what’s best for your channel.

I miss those stripy cloth seats in my 740GL, but my 940 CD LPT is still a great machine too.

Over the years, my old 240 has done a number of thousand mile plus trips, which helps explain the 400,000 on the odometer. You will never find a better car for winter weather. With good tyres, they go through almost anything. The heaters can melt your shoes. My main task this afternoon is finding proper winter tyres for Arthur. Not many made in a 195/75R14 anymore, but unless I find a good set of 15 inch steel wheels, that is what I am stuck with. As for the radio, Volvo factory units are good noise generators, and that is about it. There may also be an external amp. There is on the AM/FM Cassette in Arthur. The whole system is a low line Clarion, so yes, switching to a better head unit and speakers is definitely in the cards.
When it comes to the Rover, you are at the point where doing anything is throwing good money after bad. Cut your losses, part it out and scrap the remainder.
Its amazing how water will find it way into places that are not deemed badly sealed. I had a Merc ML followed by a VW Touareg both with the same problem, the drainage tubes in the internal body of the car (underneath the roof guttering and in the door panels got clogged so the water just pooled on the rear floor. When it first happened Merc had to strip the complete car down to find the source.......when it happened on the VW I told the garage check the tubes Which they raised their eyebrows) and it was the same problem, both cars were 6 years old!!
A few months ago i bought a Volvo 780 that had been standing since 2014. Took me just a new battery to get it started. All old school Bosch electonics.
As for your radio: you need to spray the internals of the potentiometers (volume control, bass, treble, balance) those contact tracks will be dirty. Once cleaned the radio will be OK. You tuning control is probably just a wire that has lots some tension. Those often has a spring in it. Maybe try replacing th a t spring with a tighter one?
Rover = Hub Nut My uncle used to own a 1988 Volvo 760 GLE Roman and he brought it back to Ireland in 1990 and now Ive owned for the past few years. Alpine pull out radio in mine yours is more likely a Clarion unit Throw the Rear/ front side lights into the Dishwasher and you will be surprised how well they come up. Rear speaker cable was damaged in the rear door pinch point hence no speakers Blauphunkt do nice Retro radios if ur interested which fit easily Ive 268000 miles up on it now and shes still chugging along & still love it BRILLIANT CARS
great to see the Volvo - beautiful old Nordic longboat that it is. As for the Rover, the potential is certainly there, but sometimes you have to balance the desire to keep a machine on the road with the sometimes high emotional cost of attempting that.

You need to test if you have a live on the fuel pump feed at the pump end it is only live for 2 seconds when the ignition is on it should be white/purple if not you need to test the relay input output to see where the connection is being lost.

I don't wish to tempt fate, but I have owned the same Volvo 850 for 26 years and other than flat batteries and one time when the batter lead failed, it has NEVER failed to start. And this is with my basic maintenance. Many Volvos will last 30 years / 300k miles plus with regular maintenance - not than many keep them that long in this fashion-conscious age.
I can’t believe you’re ditching that beautiful Rover I think you should persevere,the end result would be so worth it and you would look good with that 70’s pleather jacket.

Nice video as always. You really are tenacious in a good way, but every mortal man has his breaking point, even if yours is way beyond what most people can muster.
My thinking, as well as others I am sure, back when you got the Rover, was that condensation, oxidation and other (electrical) problems would be quite grave, even if the rust wasnt that bad. I will not tell you to put more money into it, but I hope you can let it rest for a while, unless you get a great offer. Maybe after a few weeks, you have the energy to start digging into the electrics. Maybe it wont even cost anything more to get it sorted. Maybe it will even dry out by itself by some miracle and start working again? Stranger things have happened.
In any case, I hope you succeed, if there was anyone I would put my hope into being able to soldier on and bounce back, it would be you. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you, Matt. Whatever you decide to do, I will keep watching.
If the Rover exhaust is described as fitting the convertible ie fits all models and doesn’t then under Ebay rules the item is “ Not as described” and the seller is liable for the return postage not the buyer, you have to open a case and go through the process which takes a couple of weeks but you will get your money back, this happens all the time and sellers routinely try and make the buyer pay for return postage when it is the sellers mistake. Usually the seller will not pay for the postage and will just refund the price .Its very important to select “Not as described” when opening a case if you say it doesn’t fit then you become liable for the postage

From what I experienced so far; if you fiddle with stuff that was left as-is, alone .. it is ought to require attention (from mufflers to pumps in the window washer reservoir etc.).
I remember the first video of the Rover and I thought then that it was a bit past it, the Rovers are great but that particular one seemed a bit more trouble than it was worth. Love the Volvo...

Aftermarket single DIN fascia plates and ISO wiring kits are readily and cheaply available for the Volvo 740 on eBay :)
Fuelgage on the 240 and 740 drops in increments, I allways got questioned when returning my fathers 244GL -81. I filled it in the evening to the level it was when I borrowed it and it was allways lower when they started it the next day. Once I got one myself I found that it dropped in quiet large increments. Volvo sold fronts and cable adapters for DIN radios, You should be able to find such parts in the aftermarket or at a scrapyard.

The Volvo is a car that for most becomes a family member. They are loyal like a faithful dog and there shouldn’t be any hesitation in keeping her on the fleet as a dependable classic. This and the Tomcat have become the staples of Furious Driving for most I reckon. I agree the Rover should be auctioned off via tickets to viewers. Squirting contact cleaner around liberally near a mechanical dial drive for a radio (which relies on cord friction around the tuning spindle) normally ends in tears, Matt... I don't know what to say about the Rover; somehow giving the thing a true "Viking Funeral" whilst apt, would be incredibly expensive.
What he said... you probably have a pulley somewhere in the dial cord path that has too much friction, or the sliding pointer, or possibly the capacitor itself. The knob likely has a brass shaft with 2-3 loops of dial cord around it, and it just can’t provide enough force to move the cord. Then again, if it could, the cord might simply break. If you don’t want to replace the radio, see if you can trace the cord path and look for where it is hanging up.
Hmm, or perhaps not? The closeup of the tuning mechanism seems to show a more complicated connection behind the knob. I wonder how that works. The preset buttons look mechanical, do they work to move the tuning?
@@BillOwens315 Usually there's a clutch assembly to disengage the knob when selecting a push-button to stop it turning (which I think is that chunky white nylon assembly) - plus I think we might also be seeing what the other concentric knob operates. It'd be nice to actually see the thing in detail and in pieces on a bench, don't you agree? Things like this are usually permeability-tuned though rather than having a variable capacitor.

You sound a bit dispondant matt. Take a deep breath and go back again. Your silly spunking it away as a non runner. Check for power at the relay, then bridge the relay with a paper clip I think it's 30 - 31 see if the pump kicks in, then see if your getting a trigger signal and trace the wires back cutting the loom open if needed..
Are they separate relays on this era of 200 or those multifunction relay units? A bit more fiddly to identify and bridge across contacts, if it’s the MFRU
its a multi function. I opened the old one and one relay appeared dead but as the cabrio is different all over I didn't know what pin goes where
Did he put his coffee cup down a bit close to where he was spraying the contact cleaner? It's drinking too much contact cleaner if your coffee that makes you buy dodgy Rover cabriolets!
I have a couple of cars out in the weather waiting to get fixed. The best thing I've bought in a long time is a dessicant dehumidifier, £120. The standard compressor dehumidifiers don't work in low temperatures but the dessicants do, though they are more expensive to run. My '98 Passat estate has leaking door-rubbers and there was a lake in the rear footwell. Kept drying it out with towels and fans but the dessicant has cured it.
Initially, it took 10 litres of water out when set to Max!
Now, it's kept the interior dry and after a Febreezing, it stays fresh in there. I've set it to 'low' and it pulls out a litre a week, but that could be because the doors aren't air-tight and I'm trying to dry the planet out.
does that have to be left plugged in or does it work chemically?
@@furiousdriving Plugged in. I have a cable in through the boot from an outside socket. It operates on humidity and you can set it to whatever you need. It's an 'EcoAir DD1 Simple'. I bought from eBay as 'Graded', or new ones are on Amazon for £150. Been worth every penny.

Don't give up on the Rover yet, it seems to me that the damp has played havoc with any electrical contact on it. Surely amongst your many fans there is an auto electrician who can help you out, at mates rates of course. May be as simple as a damp or dirty plug in the loom somewhere now that you have exhausted other possible faults. Keep your chin up.

Whatever you do, NEVER sell that 740 Matt: that and the 145 (once fixed!) are the best cars on your fleet! 🙂 With regards to the cabrio, I'm sorry to see that it's giving you grief, but I'd reccomend perseverance, as it will be all the more satisfying once it's finally put right, especially given how rare R8s are now. It's worth checking if the Rover has an inertia cutoff switch. Having changed out three fuel pumps on my MG this week (original dying, new one dead out the box, working second hand from a scrapyard) the first start after changing in a functioning pump was fine. Then the cutoff switch would engage and the car wouldn't run until I'd reset it. After that all good.
With that car its probably something more irritating (because its the hateful R8) but its worth checking. You'd be kicking yourself it was something that silly! If not sell it on, its be a shame to scrap it however its not worth the stress.

Try just walking away from the Rover and put the keys in a draw until spring. You never know what is around the corner and it's hard to work on something that keeps dragging you down constantly. It's like those bastard jobs that are driving you crazy and removing skin from your knuckles that you return to the very next morning and boom it works perfectly first time.
Agreed. You have to know when to walk away for a bit. Easier said than done though! For me, when I start losing or dropping tools - it’s time for a tea break 😂

On the Rover the relay is often the problem as the connections themselves break down (the solder). It is an easy fix and quite common for this engine. It is not the pump as that is new so can only be this common fault. The car is good I bet just a basic connection issue. Mine is a bit sluggish at the moment if I leave for a couple of weeks and will need to run some solder in there at some point but yours sound like it needs attention now.
Get the bottom sprayed with oil and not any kind of rubberized or hard coating. Those actually increase the amount of rust by attracting and holding moisture as they age

@@MeDicen_Rocha Matt had to do quite a bit of welding to get the 740 MOT'd, and welding is a skill Ian yet needs to acquire. But if you would offer Ian a Volvo estate with a five-pot engine for a HubNut price, I don't think he would turn that down!
Swap over the fuel pump relay again on the Cabrio - with the shock of dealing with the new fuel pump activity - and the miserable wet and damp weather - I reckon it's gone rogue on you.
My suggestion with the Rover would be to go around all the electrical connections and earth points and clean them all up thoroughly as, after having sat for many years, there's going to be a very good chance of there having been a build-up of corrosion on them...
Have a good think about what you do with the Rover as it's very easy to make poor decisions when you're very fed up...
The front panel on the Volvo stereo, if I remember right a Phillips unit, is removable. I believe it is screwed in place where the normal flat front panel used on aftermarket units would be. I suspect your issues are more likely to be down to bad speakers or bad wiring to the speakers, the stereos themselves are usually pretty robust so, if they're working, they usually work pretty well...
Just have a look at the connectors of the radio, the white one is the main one including the front speakers, the grey one is for the rear speakers, it doesn’t seem to be connected.

furiousdriving if you want to fit in a DIN-Radio look out for Volvo 240-DIN Adapters, the 740-adapter I got first just had cables for the rear speakers.
Interesting that he uses the clunk of the central locking as a sign of the 740's reliability. I bought one new in 1985, had it for 7 years, and the only things that ever failed (after an initial "new model" bug was shaken out) was the central locking.
I had a similar fuel problem on a xsara picasso. Had to cut hole under seat like you.. I then had to bodge a separate switch run wires from battery to switch with online fuse then onto the fuel pump. To diagnose take pump out and see if it will run from the battery just to make sure the pump isn't defective. Hope that's some help
Thats what Im planning to do, it should be a good pump as its brand new and was working fine but Ill need to do that as there are 5 wires going to it!
@@furiousdriving on the picasso I couldn't find why they pump wouldnt work but by bypassing everything with a switch it got it working but trying to remember if you have switched the pump off after parking car up had me go back to make sure on more than a few occasions. But if it gets it running its worth trying since the access hole is already there lol.. Fingers crossed it works
iknow this may sound stupid but have u tried lockingtherover with the remote and unlocking it? some times they need a refresh of the key to de activate the imoboliser...if u have dont that have u tried deactivating the imoboliser with the key and its door lock and the code....?
Great to see the Volvo back. It's one of my Furious fleet favourites (along with the Mini and the Tomcat) and glad to see it behaving. Really sad about the Rover as it seemed like you'd cracked it with the new pump. Has Mr Lloyd's pal Mr Coleman had a look? He seems like a chap who knows Rovers.

perhaps you can find someone willing to help you with the rover, sounds like a fuse or something, but considering the work done i feel its so close to being a runner as soon as the fuel is sorted, perhaps the connector for the fuel pump is tired n needs a clean, take a break from the 200 n have some fun tinkering with another project!
Good to see the Volvo again, the interior always seem bright and comforting. I think that is one of working on cars or general projects lessons if you don't enjoy it then cut your losses. With the Rover give it up and you could get and MGF instead haha. It will be interesting to see when the w123 works how the Volvo stacks up against it and which you prefer or keep!
They are such similar cars, but the Merc is much better spec, I dont know how they will drive against each other
Get rid of the Rover and enjoy the Volvo. You should never think of all the money you've poured into a project if it's really going nowhere, it's called the "sunk cost fallacy". You'll never going to recoup the money, it will just cost you more money, time and energy if you continue.
On these cars every door has a door contact switch. Switch type is dual switch. So other post goes to interior lights and other to the central locking. This means that even if youre interior light works, central locking may not. You can not use normal switch. Switches are easily cleaned even they are quite cheap and readily awailable.

That Rover was never going to be easy, try it again tomorrow - you never know, it can only be a wiring fault, fuse or dodgy connector.
There is a British firm called Autoleads which makes ISO/DIN stereo mounts for all types of cars including Volvo 740. They also have adapter cables for vehicle specific connectors to standard ones. If you want to put in an aftermarket unit.
The adapter cables makes it so easy to install a standard radio in an older Volvo. It only takes a minute to install, including fitting a single DIN facia.
Ive used adapters in lots of cars, hadn't seen the facia adapters but assumed they would exist
When you was testing using your multimeter the other day, I noticed that the voltage looked like it was around 6V it needs 12V I wonder if you have a poor ground or poor connection on the positive side of the system, if I’m right about the voltage you got of course. Good luck.

That was the 850's starting with the estate 855, before that they ran the 240's, never raced the 740, 940. Some runs in Sweden right now as rallycars, but in it's own class as it is quiet a "barge" to get around narrow corners. At least they are rear wheel driven unlike the 850 that where front wheel drive.

I always reset the trip meter so I can calculate the l/100km. That way you can also tell if it is leaking fuel :)

Does the new fuel pump have a separate earth point? If not, the fuse for the fuel pump would be first to check right? It's been working upto now, but if you jiggled something when the car was on the jacks for the exhaust change, maybe it's earthed somewhere?

Check the connection at the pump and fuse relays
why don't you get a continuity tester on the wire before ripping it all out. because if it isn't the actual speaker, or the wire in the door hinge section I'd be very surprised.
I was going to investigate whats there first, 80s cars didnt always get rear door speakers, so I didnt know if there is wiring to the door or not!

About the Rover 216, try the Rover club to see if someone is interested, and see if they can finish repairs you started. I know you are well rid of it, and I certainly cannot blame you as Quentin keeps giving the gifts that keep giving, but it is rare in the UK 🇬🇧.
The Volvo is definitely a keeper; I still think you should sell the classic Mercedes, to which your money 💷 could be spent on keeping the Volvo fit, and in good condition.
Definitely find out information on where water can enter the boot, as I am thinking yes, could be the taillamp cluster(s) or the seal around the boot lid and boot area. As you well know, lubricant is essential to keep rubber seals supple and protect the interior from the elements.
The 2.3 litre Volvo 4 non-turbo delivers linear performance, most likely due to fuel injection. Being in the US 🇺🇸 I never felt these vehicles were large (try driving a full-size American vehicle, a truck or something like the size of a Suburban), but interior wise, they were spacious and comfortable.
Everything will slowly fall into place, be patient. If patience is lost, walk away like other have stated, and then continue with repairs.
The Rover started out as a hopeful project, but sadly, not the case in the end, but I don't want to see it parted out but running due to all the hard work, time, effort, money you put into it.
If you own a 'fleet' of old cars then some sort of dry storage is almost essential. Old cars left out in the rain are going to either die (convertible) or go smelly (volvo). I understand that you have to own multiple cars if you want to have a RUclips channel but storing them and having to work on them outside is just going to become depressing when it goes a bit wrong. Making a video that says I left my volvo out for 2 months and it's gone musty and I left my Rover in the rain and it's now dead is not particularly engaging viewing either. Maybe you could find a space to share with one or two other youtubers as I know Kent is expensive. Working outside is ok when you are a penniless student (I've done that) but when you grow up the novelty wears off!
I, and many others very much like viewing these videos. The fact he hasn't got a storage unit costing £500 a month and is just a normal family man who likes cars is great. Not many people can afford to rent or own a storage unit for cars unless its a business.
Can't clearly see that radio housing, but can't you pull the knobs off, undo the nuts behind (on the rotary controls), then re-use the housing on another radio? Used to be a standard (DIN something or other) fitment before everything became manufacturer specific. Have to work out the wiring though, but it's only the speakers and power...
The size of the radio is standard DIN, but this one, the front face is all one part and the buttons are unique to each model. I need a surround to fit around a standard model

The best place you could have used the switch cleaner is on the connector which you unplugged.
Spraying switch cleaner randomly around the inside of a radio/cassette player is not a good idea and could cause more problems, including causing the tuning dial to slip.
If I still had a workshop I would have sorted it for you (gratis), although besides the tuning problem, I recon the problems are in the external wiring.
These were good radios, with a much better sound than the modern sets which have class D (digital) audio sections.
Its actuality worked! It tunes way better now, getting far more stations and moving further

rear lights need checking , that's how water gets in. Had to get some new ones from the USA (made in Estonia)! Not cheap.

This model Volvo must have been designed for the US market with that near vertical rear window popular at the time in the States , which never really grabbed me have to say . I guess its not as bad as grafting the rear of an Austin Sheerline onto the back of a Cadillac .

Speakers are probably rotten. On my car the center cone was completely separated from the outer edge of the speaker as the plasticy material had just dissolved over the last 30 years. Would be worth just replacing them all, arent very expensive to do.
Yeah, no matter what audio package it has the speakers are all rubbish in volvo 700 series.
I was planning a speaker upgrade for it, they dont sound as bad as the fallen apart speakers in the Coupe which had that fuzzy sound, this needs the wires sorting first!

It should be a R8 thorn in the side cabrio 🙈 is it a bad earth in the vehicle or a loom feed cable problem to fuel pump?
Matt, i always use "Return to sender" it's free and hava had no probs from seller or Ebay.
Unfortunately this came without a return address and to get the paypal refund you have to go through their channels but Im ready for some grumpy emails!

The day time running lights require a particular bulb I’ve been told. Normal H4’s blow fuses so I’m told.
We all know the feeling. Getting rid of it would be my thing (cut my losses and move on). Would keep the volvo though (even though I dont like it) You seem to like it a lot! This hobby is about loving what you do ;)
Shame the Rover has pushed you over the limit. Would have been great to see it brought fully back to life, but can totally understand giving up on it. Only so much you can do! Good to see the Volvo again...although no-one deserves having Heart as the only station. That's torture!

Try bridging the fuel pump relay on the Rover, if that solves it, then I'll be the relay. If no, try running a new cable from the relay to the pump.
its a weird relay with half a dozen in the same box, finding the wire is the issue
Enoughs enough despite it being an enjoyable series of videos! Go for quality not quantity for R8 ness focus on the tomcat, plus the Merc and Volvo, P6 and maybe another new project? Figure out the best was to maximise the value in the cabrio.
Don’t give up on the rover.
1. It’s good content for the rover followers.
2. You’re channel does better when you fix something rather than drive someone else’s pride and joy.
The rover may be difficult but deep down you know you want to conquer it rather than let it go to someone else.
The old merc was a problem child and you battled through.
It’s all about content and what’s best for your channel.
