Not trying to be a smart ass but I can see that people don't understand how a flash hider works. As the gas passes true the center of the device it will create a vacuum at the rear of each notch or cut in the side of the device. This vacuum pulls air in and will make the mixture of the unburnt gun powder passing out the end and sides of the device to go lean and not ignite. The unburnt powder will just fall to the ground and not make a flash. I hope this helps. I have found the Smith Bros. Vortex, A-2 and the Phantom to be the best at stopping the flash.
Yes, you are completely out of true. Powder it self contaitn oxigent compound. Without it powder cannot burn inside brass case. There is no vacuum around muzzle device.
The one thing that I will never change on my rifles is the good old A2 birdcage! And for hearing protection in the house I use a 12 gauge, it is a big boom but not that ear piercing crack of a rifle! Great video as always!
You know what would be interesting. Get a device that can measure decibel level. Put it behind the rifle from a shooter perspective and test tons of different muzzle devices to find out which one is the quietest to the loudest.

Quickly switching back to the standard birdcage and then invest in a flash hider of some sort.
Ranier Arms XTC is a good combo device. Muzzle does not move. But I would never shoot it indoors. Going to try an AAC Blackout flash hider on my next build.
Awesome video! Setting up my rifle for personal defense, I opted for the flash hider. (the YHM Phantom, which is a great combination of function and value). Lots of people use the brakes, because they help with ease of shooting/accuracy. In training, those are a pain....so loud! Aside from the noise/concussion, you can also see the effects on targets. When moving in on hanging paper, my targets go almost horizontal from the gas blowing straight out the front of my flash hider. They barely move at all with the brakes, that throw the gasses up and to the side.
YHM makes some great muzzle devices for very affordable prices. I have a YHM brake. I forget the model but it was about $40 & works as well as much more expensive brakes.
YHM has 2 kinds that look very similar. However, the YHM C5S or S5C model is a muzzle brake and flash hider. The I have the 5C model on one of my AR's and it definitely works and it's quite reasonable priced too. Two other excellent combo compensators are the Griffen Armament M4SD-II model and the PWS, FSC556 model. I run both of these two. And would say the M4SD-II is my favorite. Whenever, you have a combo compensator. It will not be 100% in one or the other. That is the flash hider or muzzle rise, or recoil reduction won't be quite as affective if the device was designated for just a specific purpose. I don't care if a brake has recoil reduction per se. Due to the 5.56mm is not some punishing round you have to contend with.
I love my BCM mod 0 that came pinned to my 14.5 BCM upper but people next me at the range hate it. Thinking about changing it to something with a little less sideways blast more of a flash hider or a linear comp. Not sure but really like some of the griffin armament choices just wish there was an easy way to try the different ones before committing to pinning it to my barrel.
My A2 birdcage works just fine for me! Surprised, but also glad to hear you run an A2 on your own home defense gun! With all the cool toys you have obvious access to and have used, if your still running a an A2, that should be testimony in of its self on just how well they really do work😉
My go to device is the VG6 Precision Epsilon Hybrid (Does Flash hiding as well and Comp).. It does everything i need it to do. Mrgunsngear Channel Keep up the great work.
I'm not a competition shooter but man do I love the jerry miculek signature comp. the thing is just awesome. Quick follow up shots. Not too loud. Not overpriced. Not heavy. Buy it,shoot it, love it!
Cool vid but you didn't answer my question. Should I put a door breacher on my 10/22? And if I do use a door breacher should I switch to a pistol grip stock? I think you have to have a pistol grip to use a door breacher, right? And what ammo should I use for door breaching? I would think something with a cool sounding name like Stinger... Do they make explosive 22 shells? I think those would be best for door breaching, right? I think you'll have to do another video to answer these questions. And please use your high speed camera to show the effects of different 22 shells for door breaching.
Mike- very rarely do I suggest products to those folks like you who are producing YT content. But I've found one I really believe works as advertised. The Ferfrans CRD is a 2 piece system (comes in 223/556 and 30 cal). The brake has done wonders to mitigate recoil in my 300blk pistol. Than, it has a QD deflector that redirects the considerable noise and blast away from the shooter in the direction of the target. Really great for CQB and if firing from prone (no dust in your face). It's really well made too. The 2 downsides are its expensive ($160) and heavy. Less so if/when the deflector part isn't being used. Worth checking out, IMHO.
Not sure about brakes, but I like flash hiders.. Best for me is the YHM phantom flash hider and the Smith Vortex. Top of the line, little to no flash in complete darkness even on a short barrel.
So, my main goal is home defense and I’m in the middle of planning/building an AR-9 with 10.5” barrel (my first “long” gun). I read up and found 3 basic muzzle devices (brake, compensator, flash hider). Then I hear terms outside of those three. Is a “blast forwarder” the same as a flash hider? And what about a linear compensator? Is it just the same as a regular compensator or is it different? So many different terms get thrown around. Noise is what I want to address, but so is the flash. Thanks much!
I went with the PWS Triad on my 16'' AR15. It does good job with flash. I tested it an hour after sundown. Recoil impulse feels less then A2 and its not as loud. Its a good hybrid flash/brake. Price is not bad either. Check it out.
You know for the price I really like the Daniel Defense Muzzle Climb Mitigator. For people who are a little more budget minded when getting into the ar15 market this is a great muzzle device. For $65 I am very pleased with how well it makes my spikes ar15 an excellent flat shooter. Love the simplicity and price of the DD parts. =)
Linear comp must have for for indoor and outdoor range I run a troy claymore muzzle brake less concussion just a little more recoil I had a flash hider on and it felt like someone slapping the shit out of out of me every round it is much better now
I'm building a 300 blackout pistol I'm going with synergy linear hybrid comp hope it works well. The price is descent for the quality I guess dont know to much about them but I hope it works well for my pistol
I don't have alot of experience with all the devices out there...but there are plenty of videos on yt. My personal choice has been PWS FSC on all my AR's and AKM's. I shoot mostly in carbine classes and sometimes competition for fun. I like that it has low recoil and my dot barely moves off target. I've had no complaints from shooters in class shooting next to me due to the fact were all wearing ear pro anyway and everyone is usually shooting at the same time. It's not too bad when shooting prone but sideways prone can blow sand back into your face. Haven't done much night shooting but I assume since the gasses are blown out to the sides and not upward...it should not effect my view of the target.
i use a spike tactical Dynocomp on my 16inch it fills like i am shoot a .22lr and a spike tactical Barking Spider on my 10.5 SBR and that is some crazy fireballs
Thanks, I already placed an order for a flash hider, then I had second thoughts about what I wanted. Your discussion helped me decide that I made the right choice for my needs.
This might be a stupid question, "sorry I'm new to the AR platform". Is it possible to add a barrel extension so maybe if I wanted to turn my 16" barrel into a 20+" is that possible or is getting a new barrel the only option. My guess is that this isn't possible because the rifling of the original barrel would be practically impossible to match up to a new extension but hey, I'm learning new crazy things I can do with my AR on the daily.
Good informative video... I'm set up for 9mm at the house for self defense... One question: between an ar,ak, and a pump or double barrel 12 guage which would be louder??? This question would be based on the ar having a a2 flashhider, the ak having the slant cut hider and the shotgun having none... Thanks...
Mrgunsngear Channel thanks... I had never thought about how loud a long gun would be inside, until recently... Hope nobody has to find out the hard way...
I find the precision armament m4-72 severe duty comp exquisitely tuned on my 10" .556 as a range clearing device. Too many people setting up targets out 400y+ every 4-5 minutes? Bust out that baby and do a few mag dumps.
Took two carbine classes this year. All the instructors gave us grief about running compensators. They do help with control, but they're loud, they bust up drywall and plywood, throw grass/sand/dirt into the air when you go roll-over prone, and most of them cost about 10 times more than an A2 flash hider. Okay, fair enough.
I have a m92 pap pistol with a CNC Warrior 4 piece flash hider and it is truly amazing. Little to no flash, even at night, and even with 7.62 being a very robust round out of that short of a barrel.
Can you do a vid shooting the black hills ammo in a 11.5 inch barrel. Comparing it to a 5.56 NATO load in the same barrel. I heard the black hills was also made to shoot more accurately in the SCAR 16 weapon system, which was manufactured for the military with a shorter barrel than the standard 14.5 M4 came with.
AAC has the Brakeout and Brakeout 2.0 that's a combination device as well. I've heard really good things about the Brakeout 2.0, so I got a couple. Haven't put it on any rifles or anything yet though to test them out.
Great channel I’m a big fan! Quick question... I live in Ca😞 however I’m building a 13.7 pin and weld 300 blackout so I can avoid sbr or pistol configuration. i wanted to get your opinion if I should go with a surefire warcomp flash hider or a muzzle break? In ca we can have suppressors so I have a surefire warden for now. Which is the best choice for a muzzle device for self defense?
I just purchased a Surefire Warcomp and as a right handed shooter, in your opinion, would you recommend timing it for a right handed shooter or in the neutral position? Thank you
Have you seen or do you have any experience with the OSS Bannar Alpha 1 muzzle device? Another AR enthusiast and RUclipsr that does reviews on AR-related stuff has one and swears by it. I'm thinking of buying it for my upcoming build but just want to get several opinions before dropping the cash. Awesome video as always, Mike! Thanks for the info.
Good info all the way around. I put a Rainier Arms XTC comp on an 14.5" AR of mine and took it on a javelina hunt. I got three shots off on a pig(no ear protection, of course) and thought "damn that was loud". Yeah, my ears were ringing for a solid month. Pretty sure I did some damage to my ears. Won't be making that mistake again.
Awesome video..I've been thinking about what to put on my AR pistol. Have you had any experience with the Ferfrans muzzle device? But it looks like it might do both well
Outstanding vid brother. This is the tipe of vids that go a long way. Very help full. What flash hider do you recommend for a 762x39 ? Best for the money. Thank you.
OBTW - even before I watched your video I was an A2 birdcage kind of guy. Especially when you look at cost, you just can't beat the A2 birdcage flash hider.
PWS FSC556 is a great hybrid...that being said it is loud as hell! I was just at a 3 gun and I was proclaimed to have the loudest rifle there lol, but it hides flash and reduces recoil enough said!
I am very impressed with the BCM Mod 1. The Mod 0 is good, but the Mod 1 is great. I also have an ST Elite with a Spikes dynacomp. The dynacomp works even better at mitigating muzzle rise, but I would assume the flash is worst. I haven't done any flash testing.
If the symmetry of the crown of a rifle is very important, shouldn't the symmetry of a muzzle device also affect bullet accuracy in same manner? The bottom part of an a2 flash hider is closed so as to not throw up dirt when firing in a prone position. But shouldn't this destabilize the bullet slightly and decrease accuracy?
So I know I'm not mrguns but I've found that the 7.62 flash hiders just aren't great. Definitely help though. Honestly my 74 style brake does really well with flash and makes it a soft shooting rifle. Can't go wrong with the 74 style. I've also seen people have success with the pws762
On a slightly more serious note... The Bulgarian 4-piece flash hider (Noveske Fire Pig) is another example of a hybrid design. It is highly effective at flash suppression but also reduces blast and recoil.
I just bought my wife a new 2017 583 series tactical mini14. It came with factory flash hider but for some reason it has crazy noise levels and the blast is crazy. What should I buy? If a brake/compensator is louder than a flash hider. It shoots 556 but sounds like my 30-06.
I know I'm asking something you probably get a lot but what brake in your opinion out of all the brakes you have tested has the least amount of blow back to the shooter? I wanted to purchase the m4-72 but that will blow a guys hat off. Thanks for your time

With all the cool toys you have obvious access to and have used, if your still running a an A2, that should be testimony in of its self on just how well they really do work😉
teamgmotorsports Indeed.
My go to device is the VG6 Precision Epsilon Hybrid (Does Flash hiding as well and Comp).. It does everything i need it to do. Mrgunsngear Channel Keep up the great work.
SHWELL11 Thanks.
No more between you two. Too dangerous. Please communicate through me for he better good. MrGG, this guy will steal your guns. ;)
Been thinking about one. Does it increase noise considerably?
I like how you've got Wilmington in the back ground!
🇺🇸
I had the unfortunate opportunity to fire a 5.56 indoors with a very effective muzzle brake. The pressure wave blew out two windows.
thanks for the report
Are you just exaggerating or serious?
Best explanation I have seen on the subject. Thanks.
Another combination device I've heard good things about is the Strike Industries J-Comp, so that may be a product you may be interested in.
Jeffrey Dees Thanks.
nice down town Wilmy back ground
I'm not a competition shooter but man do I love the jerry miculek signature comp. the thing is just awesome. Quick follow up shots. Not too loud. Not overpriced. Not heavy. Buy it,shoot it, love it!
Tyler Ford Nice.
Stop trolling
Cole Dedhand :D
You should put that door breacher on your bow, they have new door breacher broadheads that are pretty aggressive. :|
a2 is one of the best flash hider, maybe the best, add cost and is the best for sure
agreed
M85FSLUVR It looks pretty nice, thanks.
Not sure about brakes, but I like flash hiders.. Best for me is the YHM phantom flash hider and the Smith Vortex. Top of the line, little to no flash in complete darkness even on a short barrel.
pjsteels Both good options.
GrizzlyTube1 Thanks.
Jason Loewe Good stuff.
These might help some viewers Griffin Armament Brake Shields
i use a spike tactical Dynocomp on my 16inch it fills like i am shoot a .22lr
and a spike tactical Barking Spider on my 10.5 SBR and that is some crazy fireballs
toolboxluis I bet!
I think the Lantac dragon is great, kills all the muzzle rise and recoil, while having some slight flash reduction.
thanks for the report
Thanks, I already placed an order for a flash hider, then I had second thoughts about what I wanted. Your discussion helped me decide that I made the right choice for my needs.
waspswatter Glad it helped.
Check out the Effin-A. It's adjustable.
TOMMYTANKERB32 Thanks.
This might be a stupid question, "sorry I'm new to the AR platform". Is it possible to add a barrel extension so maybe if I wanted to turn my 16" barrel into a 20+" is that possible or is getting a new barrel the only option. My guess is that this isn't possible because the rifling of the original barrel would be practically impossible to match up to a new extension but hey, I'm learning new crazy things I can do with my AR on the daily.
what muzzle device would you recommend for a PAP M92, I'm looking into the Bulgarian krink device.
Seconding this question
Fighter Brake
Good informative video... I'm set up for 9mm at the house for self defense... One question: between an ar,ak, and a pump or double barrel 12 guage which would be louder??? This question would be based on the ar having a a2 flashhider, the ak having the slant cut hider and the shotgun having none...
Thanks...
kevinfromwebb All pretty close; depends on barrel length and muzzle device as to which is louder.
TheSuburban15 :D
The precision armament AFAB, EFAB, m4-72. One of the 3 should pretty much take care of you, AFAB man myself AdvancedFlashArrestingB-somrthing
What compensator would you recommend for an SBR? Does it make a difference when it comes to barrel length?
I have a m92 pap pistol with a CNC Warrior 4 piece flash hider and it is truly amazing. Little to no flash, even at night, and even with 7.62 being a very robust round out of that short of a barrel.
What about Strike Industries J Comp or King Comp? Do you think you would/could review those? I’m really interested in their blast shield (oppressor)
No
I've been thinking about an EFAB because it does both flash hider and mitigate recoil.
+Albert Ortiz indeed
Can you do a vid shooting the black hills ammo in a 11.5 inch barrel. Comparing it to a 5.56 NATO load in the same barrel. I heard the black hills was also made to shoot more accurately in the SCAR 16 weapon system, which was manufactured for the military with a shorter barrel than the standard 14.5 M4 came with.
jack suquett maybe one day
AAC has the Brakeout and Brakeout 2.0 that's a combination device as well. I've heard really good things about the Brakeout 2.0, so I got a couple. Haven't put it on any rifles or anything yet though to test them out.
MrSirUndersteer Good stuff.
You really are a great instructor; right to the point with exactly what we need to know.
Thanks for the info.
kpw528 I haven't. Thanks.
Robert Kiernan Indeed.
Awesome video..I've been thinking about what to put on my AR pistol. Have you had any experience with the Ferfrans muzzle device? But it looks like it might do both well
Mr Bean I haven't.
Outstanding vid brother. This is the tipe of vids that go a long way. Very help full.
What flash hider do you recommend for a 762x39 ? Best for the money.
Thank you.
jugado219 Thank you. Best for the money..... Hmmm.... What thread?
14 1L yugo OPAP
OBTW - even before I watched your video I was an A2 birdcage kind of guy. Especially when you look at cost, you just can't beat the A2 birdcage flash hider.
Sir could you tell me the best flash hider/suppressor combo for first shot cold bore flash?
Also have you tested the Rugged Razor 556 suppressor?
PWS FSC556 is a great hybrid...that being said it is loud as hell! I was just at a 3 gun and I was proclaimed to have the loudest rifle there lol, but it hides flash and reduces recoil enough said!
bolawdean Thanks.
Thank you for the great reviews...i buy a lot of stuff you review... love my hank's belts especially!
Bobby Ditto.
Big fan of the Surefire MB
Rex0915 Ditto
I just ordered the warcomp. Excited to try it out.
Also when at the range and someone sets up next to me with an extra loud break. I tend to give him ugly looks while I get up and move.
Just common coutesey to let the guy next door know it's gonna be loud!
You should post the links on those muzzle/hiders
If the symmetry of the crown of a rifle is very important, shouldn't the symmetry of a muzzle device also affect bullet accuracy in same manner? The bottom part of an a2 flash hider is closed so as to not throw up dirt when firing in a prone position. But shouldn't this destabilize the bullet slightly and decrease accuracy?
yhm phantom is really good..that's what I use on my AK...
awesome
good video..
what would you do on a 7mm? hunting situation and competitive shooting? No home defense. thank you
+Scott Lambert flash hider
Helpful video but not the same without the beautiful dock on the water scene and the great t shirts he usually has on. Still good though
Lol this video is like 8 years old.
I really enjoy your thoughtfull vid, Good on ya mate!
What's a good, cheap option for AKs to reduce recoil/muzzle rise?
Great video btw, liked. 👍
So I know I'm not mrguns but I've found that the 7.62 flash hiders just aren't great. Definitely help though. Honestly my 74 style brake does really well with flash and makes it a soft shooting rifle. Can't go wrong with the 74 style. I've also seen people have success with the pws762
Still choosing the A2?
On a slightly more serious note... The Bulgarian 4-piece flash hider (Noveske Fire Pig) is another example of a hybrid design. It is highly effective at flash suppression but also reduces blast and recoil.
Cole Dedhand Indeed. It works as a linear comp too which is a whole different animal...
What are you're thoughts on the battlecomp? Would the gunfighter comp work better?
SR pwr I have a review on it. Depends what you want out of the device....
I have heard great things about the vg6 epsilon. What are your thoughts?
it works but it's loud and not for the two way range IMO
I just bought my wife a new 2017 583 series tactical mini14. It came with factory flash hider but for some reason it has crazy noise levels and the blast is crazy. What should I buy? If a brake/compensator is louder than a flash hider. It shoots 556 but sounds like my 30-06.
Maybe a Vortex flash hider. Suppressors are of course the best flash hiders.
Cool thanks man.
I know I'm asking something you probably get a lot but what brake in your opinion out of all the brakes you have tested has the least amount of blow back to the shooter? I wanted to purchase the m4-72 but that will blow a guys hat off. Thanks for your time
+kroggs04 flash hiders have the least amount of blast so if that's what you want that's what you should look at
Very informative video. BTW, Wilson Combat has a new FH/Comp called the Q-Comp. I'd really like to hear your thoughts and see a review
I saw that too
As I am now trying to explain to Mrs. Hill...Baby this justifies "our" need to register an SBR with a suppressor...and it's only about $XXXX...
Haha good luck Hill :D
hillmillenia Agreed.
Both it is.
I've got a Colt competitive 3 chamber break.
update please!!! still a solid video!!!
What about for an AR9?
Check out Mcarbo website and look at the muzzle brake for the Kel tec Sub 2000 Gen 2. It's in 9mm and 40 S&W so pick the right one!
Wheaton Arms & for sure SJC Triton...look no further
