According to the report, the aircraft was turning left and descending through a low cloud ceiling.
The crew emerged from the bottom of the cloud layer in an “unrecoverable flight attitude" (fancy talk for upside down) , and “The crew was unable to recover the aircraft before impacting the ground”. TLDR; cause of crash was Pilot error.
I think you were just simplifying things, but tot necessarily all the way upside down. But yeah. I suspect got the leans/some sort of spatial disorientation and at their altitude were unable to correct in time, or made what they thought was a correction but actually made the situation worse.
Any pilot who has experienced disorientation before will know how scary it can be when you realize it.

As a former Blackhawk Door Gunner in Iraq, we always knew how dangerous the job "could be", but it always seemed to be one of those "it'll never happen to us" scenarios. It hurts my heart to see that happen, as I can only imagine. Condolences to the families as well. Rest in Peace Brothers and Sisters in arms....
was it common to hear about crashes while you served? or was it rare enough it never happened to anyone by you? it just amazes me how finicky and dangerous those things are
I would say it’s rare, overall, considering how many aircraft the military owns and how many hours are flown …although it did happen once in my unit while I was serving and we lost some buddies. It’s hard on everyone.

@@3187rakkasan ....While crashes are rare I was involved in one. I served as an 0331 machine gunner in the Marine Corps. We were out at Bridgeport California for Mountain Warfare Training and had the CH 46 helicopters flying us around. The bird I was on went to insert us on the side of a mountain that had this large rock shelf. Apparently the Tory blades clipped the rocks on the side of the mountain as the pilot was setting us down. The whole helicopter turner on it left, ( port ) side and we slammed into the ground from about 15 feet up....Thank God we didn't go right because the aircraft would have just fallen at least 6 to 700 feet off that part of the mountain. This was at night time and the pilots were flying with NVG's ( Night Vision Goggles ). I hurt my shoulder but it wasn't serious. The worst injury we had was a few broken bones on guys. Interestingly enough they did the investigation and no one was allowed to say we crashed. We were all told we had what is known as a "hard landing".....

What is going wrong?... I live in West Virginia close to the 167th... And I've noticed some very weird things going on with helicopters lately... I was a small helicopter that was skimming the trees maybe a month ago.. it look like he was going to crash... But that's not the only one I've noticed weird things happening with helicopters that fly over head...
We are still using equipment that’s from the late 70s that we just keep rebuilding.
Be like expecting your grandfathers lawnmower to keep working just fine 50 years after extensive wear and tear.
Eventually something breaks and the system fails. No amount of rebuild stops that unless it’s complete new build from scratch.
US isn’t gonna go do that, a Blackhawk is round the tune of 10.2 million dollars each- they just gonna rebuild what they have and keep telling pilots and crew that they aren’t expendable:

The helo crashed onto the median of a 4 lane highway - state hwy. 53 in Harvest, Alabama, just north of Huntsville. They were only about 15 miles from Redstone Arsenal, so a lot of Army aviation passes through this area. Rest in peace, soldiers.
It was a miracle it didn’t strike any cars on the road adding to the death toll

I believe they were trying to do an auto rotation due to the sound picking up the rotors getting louder which means they tried to pull the collective up as a last resort before they passed, my condolences for the pilots family.

As Hawker Hurricane wrote it looks like an autorotation gone bad.
Prob the rotor rpm dropped just too far - then there's nothing you can do. And not even altitude can save you then if you got a problem and not just doing it as an training exercise where you can just spool the rpm back up - because at a certain point the main rotor just won't gain back the rpms but instead will slow down even more...
And that might also explain the attitude of the a/c - they were trying to gain back airspeed so that the rotor would have the chance to regain the min rotor rpm - in that case they just ran out of altitude... That would also explain the change in the sound in the end - they tried to flare, but the rotor disc just didn't have enough energy to slow them down before the impact.
But we will have to wait for the official accident report - there could also have been something wrong with the bird...

This is not an auto-rotation gone. It sounds more like loss of tail rotor command. Turbine engine throttle control under that condition is incredibly difficult as a means to counteract torque.

I was expecting a giant crash with explosions and shootings with missiles being launched n’ stuff, but all we got was just a very VERY far away crash that I needed to watched the video twice to see it.
I lived near a us major base. The helicopters would always fly so low. One day, I felt the a swish swish shake of my home getting harder and harder. Then it was constant. We get a knock on our door apologizing for using our back yard (an acre) for landing.
Crazy I had a dream about a helicopter falling from the sky a month ago. I heard the same sound.
