Great Study Method - I'm doing private studies - which is quite different from class or lecture based studies where one can get help from teachers, private studies require a more in-depth way of study. I am going to do SQ3/4R plus use the Cornell Note-Taking Method. I like to take short but detailed notes for quick revision purposes since I always have to rectify in my profession every 3 to 4 years - CISCO. Thanks for the nice, clear and simple to follow video Dr John.
I was a bit dismissive of the SQ3R model when I first came across it, but this presentation has been very informative and shown me that it may be a very useful strategy to read. Thank you.
Not the best presentation of this technique. S and Q really helps to query your current knowledge structures before you actually read to expand and build your knowledge. It is equivalent to asking yourself what do I know about the topic I'm about to study? The R-read step involves extracting a sequence of main ideas (remember each paragraph has a single main idea) that tell the story, explain a theory, etc. The R-review step is very critical as it helps to deepen comprehension but it also helps with memory. This is a critical step and I encourage active review where you relate the material to your personal experience, or to earlier chapters or other subjects that have previously studied. Reviewing in this manner allows you to make active connections to other areas of interest or relevance. It integrates various areas of knowledge so that the subject becomes more enhanced.
