curious - why do half of the series you have start at volume 10 or even 50?

when i first started collecting i would watch the anime and then wherever it left off i would buy the rest of the manga to finish the series. or in some cases i would buy certain vols that i could find because the series is way too big for me to buy the whole collection in one go.
