Could the 959 be the very reason why Porsche almost always is ahead of its rivals? Its almost as Porsche sent the 959 back through time to give themselves the edge.

Koji Takata they weren’t 30 years ahead of themselves. A 996 Turbo is probably faster in many ways and a Carrera GT certainly. That said 959 is my favorite.
All the technical features that were considered outrageous at the time the 959 came out eventually trickled down to the "lesser" Porsche models. Twin-turbos, AWD, adjustable ride height, adjustable dampers. But at its core, the car was still a 911. Just imagine the current Turbo S with 50% more power = 870 HP.
@@Atombender you don't have to imagine. Canepa upgrades these to over 800hp. 2,5 sec to 100km/h. they call it 959 sc if im not mistaken. Of course its faster than current cars.
Excellent video! Finally someone acknowledges the significance of the 959, specifically in regard to the many technologies that this car pioneered, by a very small independant car company at the time. You should check out the auto motor sport mag which compared the 959 to the F40 and several other super cars of the day. The 959 sport exceeded 200 mph, and beat the F40 in both acceleration and top speed, just like the same magazine reported when they compared the Carrera GT against the Enzo at Nardo, many years later. We should all tip our hats to Helmut Bott, head of Porsche's R&D at the time. I was fortunate enough to have been given a private tour of Zuffenhausen, in the spring of 1986, when these cars were being built (I believe that the building was called the Reuterwerk). I was even allowed to take pictures of the 959s that they were building in various stages of completion. The times were much different then...
Thanks for the story! I'm only 30 but this car always seemed interesting but secretive to me. The F40 is apparently an amazing car but the attention was undue. Top speed is irrelevant when the difference is 195 vs. 200 mph. Too bad PDK technology wasn't caught weight/cost/reliability-wise to include.
+Abe From an thanks for the ams link. That's not the one that I was referring to though. It was an issue from '86 or maybe '87. The F40 was great but Porsche seems to be reserved for the real car fans. Ferrari gets a lot of it's significance just because "it's Ferrari". Even though they both have a great history, Porsche is still the best brand today and still pushing the limits and raising the bar constantly. Ferrari seems to be relying on their name to bring in the money, and not really trying to stay elite in terms of performance. I'm two years late to this video, but it's sad to see that there is so much praise for the F40, but there are almost no recent videos of the 959 or any 959 related content at all on the internet besides the few people who still know about it.
Terry Forth the 959 was never imported into the US. The ones that are here were brought in under Grey Market rules years later. They’re Witt millions today.
+St Hr +St Hr I think in comparison to the F40 its underrated because the F40 was faster even though the 959 has a leather interior, Air conditioning and a radio like Nick said. I don't think people know how innovative it is either because I'm learning a lot of thing about the 959 which I didn't know about it like that it had magnesium wheels and how much money was spent on it.
Who gives a shit about leather, radio and air conditioning when you're driving the ultimate supercar of the 80's? The Ferrari in my opinion is a more exciting vehicle, it has an amazing design, the acceleration is brutal and the quality is pretty much shit but its simplicity is what makes it so special, once you're behind the wheel you become one with the machine. The Porsche in the other hand is absolutely magnificent with all the advanced technological features it comes with, totally ahead of its time and in no way it's underrated. However most car guys don't care about the 'comfort' part, I couldn't care less if my supercar had leather seats, A/C, radio, traction control or whatever other thing, all I care about is the connection between me and my car. Oh, and don't forget the need... the need for speed. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
It's not underrated. Not at all. A lot of people feel like this guy-the reviewer. You just have a lot of loud, You Tube Ferrari loving kids shouting Everytime they can about the F40. Luckily, that doesn't erase the 959's genius and impact.

@@deerlord2363 For me it's not the comfort aspect, it's the tech aspect and the 959 was bristling with innovation.
Bunga bunga curve ;) You've never mentioned the fact that 959 saved 911. 959 is the most important Porsche ever made. I wish to dive this awesome car at least once in my life.
My Porsche was perfectly reliable (with exception of the rear window getting crinkled when the top went down). Maintenance was incredibly expensive. I traded for a Z06 Corvette, which was amazing in different ways, and just more practical for my needs. There will always be a place in my heart for Porsche’s, there is nothing like them.
Great to see you give the 959 it’s due credit. Strangely, it is regularly relegated to the distant shadows cast by the F40, which is a glorified go-kart (from a technical perspective at least) in comparison. I had the good fortune of seeing them being built, when I toured the factory in Zuffenhausen, back in the spring of 1986 (and I actually have pics 😉). More enthusiasts should be made aware of the significance of this vehicle, im terms of how it influenced the modern supercar. Thanks for doing your part 👌.
I remember when i was at school and it was revealed to the world, it was amazing to look at and way, way ahead of its time muscular and futurustic looking with insane performance, best of the top trumps full stop.
I always loved this car in silver. Had a poster of it as a teen in the 80's, but this is the first time I have seen it in black , and it looks sensational! So far ahead of it's time. Even reading about it as a kid with hardly any knowledge about cars, the technical details sounded amazing.
Love that car, always have. Had it as a Matchbox toy car when I was a kid. Now my kids play with it, I've told them, that it's something special. Great show, I almost cried - like the evo driver (sorry didn't get the name).
For Porsche to take the risk and lose a substantial amount of money, yet create one of the sexiest car's they ever built is amazing. That is a true automotive company that deserves the utmost respect. Only if car companies still had the same drive and passion to take risks and create something beautiful is something that's lost today..
Really really excellent low-key video. Just a sharp passionate intelligent guy leisurely driving an amazing car around a track. Looks easy to put together, but videos like these are the hardest to make well.
I grew up when this car was already built. It was so far ahead in terms of technology.....it was simply-- jaw dropping. One tidbit, the wheels were hollow because they were used to hold the air in the tires and could thus monitor tire pressure.
I had a poster of this on my wall in college, not a lambo or ferrari. This. The original and best 80s supercar! Still my favorite to this day.

It's not underrated. Not at all. A lot of people feel like this guy-the reviewer. You just have a lot of loud, You Tube Ferrari loving kids shouting Everytime they can about the F40. Luckily, that doesn't erase the 959's genius and impact.

For me it's not the comfort aspect, it's the tech aspect and the 959 was bristling with innovation.
Money no object - the only car I would ever buy. Loved it the day it was announced, feel exactly the same now.
This is my fav Porsche right behind the Carreta GT, and sure is in my top 10 of all time fav sports car.
Bunga bunga curve ;)
You've never mentioned the fact that 959 saved 911.
Hands down this is the most beautiful 911 in my opinion
Thank you SO much for this amazing visual "show-and-tell." Wish I were a bazillionaire 'cause I'd definitely buy one.
You can hear the passion in this presenters voice - Top marks! :)
I Just Wanna Thank God, My Moms, Evo & Porsche For Bring Me To This Car Today.
I saw another video which covered geeky details like the owners manual. The picture of the radio in the manual shows it’s tuned to 95.9 FM. Love it! 🤓
fantastic car and video. almost saw a tear of joy there.
well presented, good journalism, sir.
Keep on trucking ! (from France)
Love that car, always have. Had it as a Matchbox toy car when I was a kid. Now my kids play with it, I've told them, that it's something special. Great show, I almost cried - like the evo driver (sorry didn't get the name).
I just saw one of these yesterday in white. It looked and sounded amazing.
+Ben Oto You lucky person you!
For Porsche to take the risk and lose a substantial amount of money, yet create one of the sexiest car's they ever built is amazing. That is a true automotive company that deserves the utmost respect. Only if car companies still had the same drive and passion to take risks and create something beautiful is something that's lost today..
What an amazing car! The 1980's radio even has an Iphone dock!
+N221BP Thats a cassette deck... hahahahaha
+Underpantsniper What, you didn't know Porsche not only built a car the is ahead of its time, but they also build a smart phone at the same time?
*built
Really really excellent low-key video. Just a sharp passionate intelligent guy leisurely driving an amazing car around a track. Looks easy to put together, but videos like these are the hardest to make well.
F40 for life... even though I might never see one or touch.. driving one seems a far away dream.
Fabulous, one Porsche one Porsche only it would be this for me
I grew up when this car was already built. It was so far ahead in terms of technology.....it was simply-- jaw dropping. One tidbit, the wheels were hollow because they were used to hold the air in the tires and could thus monitor tire pressure.
