Finally. I’m a former scientist and used HeLa cells throughout my education and career, never knowing that they came from Henrietta Lacks. I was so angry when I did find out and also became aware that the company NEVER compensated her family. It’s never too late to do right.
Amen ❤
I conccur as a former scientist at JHU
Amen
I need y’all to understand this was a 31 year old woman who had cervical cancer she went to the hospital for treatment but instead they stole and harvested her cells for pharmaceutical advancements. She died but her cells were kept alive.
It’s… shocking and awful. So hard to comprehend.
I really don't think they were to concerned about saving her life or doing right by her children....disgusting
Omg I never heard of this is crazy.
Why are those people such thieves? The fact that they steal people and people cell and organs is just wild. Very wicked behavior.
I wouldn't be surprised if they killed her to use the cells #karmicdebts
I read a book on her and her story over 10yrs ago and I'm glad the family finally got what was deserved. 💜
That was an excellent book-The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
@@marytheresejacksonlutz2533 Yes, that's it. I couldn't remember the name. It was excellent.
It sure was! I learned a lot from this book.
👍🏿
They didn't. these companies profited and are still profiting. They're liars and thieves and there's a special place in the afterlife for them
My mother always mentioned John Hopkins always did testing on us without permission. I’m glad her family finally get the honor and respect she deserves
Her family should get a lifetime payout for the rest of life. They are still using her cells until this day
I think that would mean they would have to legally become part owners or part founders of HeLa cells in order for that to happen. That would be another fight. Maybe one of her great great grandchildren might pursue that if they’re even allowed because we don’t know the terms of this settlement.
I agreed!!!!
Absolutely! At least a decent percentage of future uses!!
Finally! Justice and recognition for Henrietta. I remember reading her story and just being dumbfounded that all of us have benefitted from her suffering (read her story) in the form of vaccines and cancer treatments, etc and yet her family (her descendants) couldn't even afford health insurance. Can you imagine the wealth that was generated and the lives that were saved or extended and yet this woman's family could couldn't even afford to go to the doctor or pay insurance?!
Yes - that is horrendous. Bless those people who suffered, & may racism and prejudice never hurt them again 🙏🏾
Settling isn't justice
@@CephlonMayngrum Well, you are right but it's the best the law will allow.
What's so ironic (at the least) is that, so many who wish she never existed, actually exist because she existed. No matter how many millions of lives she saved or the loved ones who cherrish(ed) their survival, many of them will never appreciate what she has done and how they benefited from her existence.
I'm happy for the family but still angry. Look how long it's taken them to be compensated, over 70 years. Reading her story was so heartbreaking. I'm kind of concerned that they did not get adequate compensation, after all this clip said the biotech company was pleased to reach an out of court settlement. Without Mrs. Lacks cells successfully replicating, the entire medical industry would be no where near where it is today.
Same. Makes my blood boil. I can only imagine what else was stolen from other black people!!! Stealing from us is a thing they do!
I remember sitting in a room full of future doctors who all agreed that her family should not be compensated because her cells were essentially like “garbage tossed out on the side of the road.” As the only black person in the room, I was shocked and 100% sure they would have not have said the same had it been their loved one.
😡😡😡 oooh that makes me livid. I’m sorry you even had to be in the presence of such disrespect! How unconscionable and apathetic!
I'm curious to their logic because the opposite is true lol they seem bitter for real.
@@illigirl768 they said that it’s like if I had an antique item that I put out on the road to be picked up by garbage collectors. If someone else picks up that antique item and realizes that it has a lot of value, then I am not entitled. I was baffled.
@@illigirl768 we read the book for an assignment in a cell biology course. We had to debate whether the family should be compensated. At the end of the debate, everyone except for me admitted that they did not believe the family deserved compensation.
The difference @amhym1932 is that it would’ve been your choice in putting your item out for garbage. She on the other hand never had a choice because she was never made aware that at her cells were being taken. They stole a piece of her literally and profited off it and instead treated her whole body and life like it was trash 😡. Disgusting!
Love this for her and her family! Should’ve been done YEARS ago ❤
Henrietta cells were used even in space. John made billions off her. Can you imagine how they tried to see if the family had the same cells? I’m so happy they acknowledge this amazing women. I do believe they took her life after draining her body for research. Rest In Peace beautiful. Thank you for everything you done n continue to do for many generations.
I’m sure they did take her life
John’s Hopkins should be ashamed at their inappropriate behavior with PEOPLE OF COLOR and medical experimentation.
Yet another inspiring story of Black Women and their contributions to this foreign land.
Ikr. look at how much black people have done for this countries history already like this is another moment of under appreciation towards our people.
It just sucks that someone had to FIGHT just for her story to be revealed and get compensation otherwise they would’ve went through their whole lives and corporate America would still cash in.
That's hilarious!
@@fredpendergrass6960
What’s hilarious? You do know and it’s a scientific fact that Black women are the only women who carry the Eve gene which can birth different nationalities.
@@fredpendergrass6960Her cells have probably been in your body. LOL
Albert Kligman conducted his groundbreaking work on tretinoin primarily on local Black inmates. 1950 to 1970's at University of Pennsylvania. I notice John Hopkin is not in the SOUTH .... your getting "drip drip drip"
Just look at how many bodies Harvard University is trying to return. its sick
This family will never get proper justice in this life. These companies did more than steal from them. They experimented on them and made trillions and are still making money from it. This family should have to be compensated every time those cells are used
No matter how much compensation the family got it wasn’t enough.
It's never too late to do the right thing. Yes.
Yes!
Amen
The title should say *Henrietta Lacks' family settles lawsuit for the THEFT of her cells."*
The book filled me with rage and sadness. Our stories are slowly being told, as forces against us strike back in every way they can.
I wish that Deborah, Henrietta’s daughter, would’ve still been alive to experience this. I think that she would’ve received better closure now that the Lacks have justice at last. Same goes for everyone else in the family who never got compromised in their entire lives.
wow that is so sad. this story is more bitter than bittersweet
Since reading Rebecca Skloot's "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" in 2010, I've followed this story. 31 year old woman goes for cervical cancer treatment & instead her cells are harvested unbeknownst to her & corporations make billions in profit from her cells for decades. Truly enraging. While I am glad the family is being compensated, it frustrates me that we don't know the details to determine if these folks are being exploited again.
This is great news! As long as the cells are being used, her family should receive compensation or atleast distribute scholarships in her honor.
Just cause it was settled, doesnt mean she and her family got what was deserving.
Awesome, so deserving for very long time. Happy Heavenly Birthday Ms. Lacks, first of all!! Also, Congratulations to your family for continuing to pursue Justice on your behalf!!💯😍🙌😇🎉🎊
This family DESERVES TRILLION$ because Harrietta's cells made the medical fields multiple TRILLIONS & TRILLION$ of dollars!!
So when some one says A Black Woman will save the world... IT'S NOT AN EXAGGERATION
So happy for this family! So glad they kept up the fight and didn’t give up!!
Just finished the book. Everyone in the health field should be mandated to read her book-(RebeccaSkloot incredible book). The whole world owes Henrietta & her family for their sacrifice for the advancement of humanity. No amount of money can replace time or a mother's love. THANK YOU Henrietta. May you and your girls rest in power peace and love. I hope your grandkids got an "immortal" settlement. God bless. ❤
I read the book in college and it changed my life. This was a travesty the way they stole from this woman who they seemed more interested in studying than saving. I hope they got justice. ❤
Justice at last!!!! This country owes Black people so much so I'm happy at least one family has been compensated.
How many black people’s cells have been used for decades without their consent? This is disgusting and I’m happy that her family got some form of justice
They didn't just steal her cells just for the sake of stealing and testing them. Henrietta's cells were "special". The cells continued to grow and replicate outside of her body in a lab environment as if they were immortal. THAT'S why the THIEVES stole them. Even now, her cells continue to multiply and no one really knows why. Thus the title "The Immortal Henrietta Lacks". ❤
I saw her story! They been using us (black people) for years!!!
The hospital or university bearing his name should have hers instead!
🎯🎯🎯🎯👏🏽
If the family got less then $1Billion Dollors they got ripped off.
$275,000
@@RR-hb7nj If its that amount that's not being ripped off that flayed to death and 100% of that $275,000 would go to the lawyers with the family having to pay the rest of the fees
They got a undisclosed amount so gotta be billions❤❤❤RIP and thank you
It better be billions 😡
$275,000
Billions? Nah. Serpent seed not paying that without a court judgment. I hope they got at least 250 Mil tho.
I think they received at least one billion. At least.
So good to see the family was finally compensated. I am sure the rabbit hole goes deep when it comes to hospitals/big companies taking samples of unsuspected people and using them for a profit or experiment.
Along time coming I'm proud and honored. God bless her family ❤
Just imagine, how many more could they be using for scientific research without your consent?
I am so glad to hear of this resolution, and I hope many more pharmaceutical companies will try to rectify their wrong as well. God bless this family for staying in the fight.
Whatever they settled, it will NEVER be enough for what they’ve done to us as a People!!!!
It took 72 years? I hope that they do more than a one time payment. They deserve royalties!!!
72 years for a settlement out of court... this doesn't feel like justice
I’ve been following this story for years and read the book. This is well deserved! Finally !
Yes I was just talking about Ms. Lacks with my family couple of weeks ago.. Thank you ❤
ABOUT TIME!!!! I’m SO happy this day is finally here. It was unethical and a repulsive injustice. May she finally receive the recognition she and her family deserve.
I’m so glad her family never gave up on fighting for this ❤
Wonderful book and movie. This story made me upset, and I was frustrated and cried. She was an Angel
I'm so happy that her family got justice.
They doing the same thing at hospitals by taking placentas ! And y’all don’t even realize how much they are worth
This is very sad. I would never settle. Ms.Henrietta rest in paradise.🙏🏽
It better be billions!!!
$275,000
And the awful part is that the majority of the family lives at the poverty level while these people made fortunes. Another example of how blacks suffered, were experimented on, and were oppressed so that others could prevail and prosper smh. I'm so glad her family is able to be compensated finally
This is huge
About time 🎉🎉 All love to Henrietta Lacks. They do this to ALL people ESPECIALLY black women. They take umbilical cords and placentas from women daily and do the same thing! It's going on till this day right under our noses.
This family should have big money decades ago
This is what true reparations looks like. ❤️
Facts!!!
They settled out of court. Trust me they got away with this even if you don't think so.
Finally!! God Bless This Family for fighting and Not giving up to Spread their Truth! 🙏🏽🌹🙏🏽
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Laxs! I feel like no amount of settlement can meet these cells' contribution. May she rest in peace.
We talked about her in my bio class
I learned about her in my microbiology class this year
I like to say a Big Thank you to Miss Hendretta Lacks . I hated how they went about it stealing your cells because of you kelp us safe and healthy. ❤❤❤
Her cells are saving people lives ..................
God morning, God bless you Henrietta Lacks, when God made you to come into this world, He knew your purpose indeed. I remember walking in Oak Patk , Illinois, and saw a drawing of a woman whom I thought was Caucasian because of her light skin. When I found out she was a black woman my curiosity made me go to the library to find out who she was. I checked out the book a woman wrote of her story. I was floored when I read that her Cells were used without her permission. God is Great and this proves that the cells of a black woman, the mother of mankind in all the earth is undeniable. A black woman cells created all humanity! Amen and so it is!
PS was
I remember seeing a sample of her cells in a museum about four years ago, happy its been resolved, I just hope the money is used wisely.
You don't have to be concerned about that.
@@tiffanyhall1944 Exactly. That was such a foolish comment. Her family can use the money however they see fit. It's no one else's business.
I hope they got billions. The whole bloodline should never suffer again. It’s only fair. They need royalties for eternity
May she rest in peace, havinf made a magnificent signifigant contribution to medical science, unbekniwnst to her.😢😢😢
So glad the family has received compensation. Hope the other pharmaceutical companies will follow suit.
They still doing it to us. Smh
Generational wealth better be covered. This is insane how many generations they take care of with her cells
It's about damn time!
If they didn't obtain rights and they are just taking money it's sad.
There are so many others that will never get justice!
Can't believe it took so long to give her family a little bit of justice.
She saved many around the world.
this was in magazine 30+ yrs ago i still have the article in storage.
Thank you for this gift of Justice absolutely 🙏
We're everywhere ❤
Be weary everyone . What was done to her is being done today and the least to benefit from it are our people.
Can't believe those pictures are so old !! Thanks for upload !!
I’m going to keep this in my playlist for a long time ❤❤❤❤ praying for the family to handle a sudden wealth gain with grace and authentic helpfulness from those with experience with lots of money and are trustworthy.
The HELA cells. Crazy "HEALING CELLS". God bless their family.
She saved the world
Finallyyy. Her family deserved this along time ago.
We've all got a little Henrietta in all of us.
Happy that this happened but I'm wondering how much they got? I bet it was mere crumbs compared to how much the companies profited from it.
AMEN!
I read the book on the history of this woman twice now. The amount of BS and lack of credit they all had to go through was unreal.
They owe the family trillions...literally
Finally! They received some form and some level of justice. 👏🏾
I am so glad justice had been served.
Only a settlement? Should've went for Royalities
Her cells prove that we were not meant to die. ❤
There are so many rascit people in the world, a black woman saved your life and childrens children.
She was the pharmaceutical guinea pig
Thank you!👏👏👏
NOW, 9/13/23 her son passed and has been laid to rest in PEACE with his mother. THIS IS JUSTICE. THIS IS LOVE. THIS IS PEACE. ✌🏾💜💪🏾
She needs more recognition. Alot of people don't know who she is.
Since I first read about Mrs. Lack, her story has stayed with me. I'm glad her family has received some compensation.
The movie was excellent!! Thank you for the update. I am so glad that Oprah Winfrey was a part of this project!! Ms Lacks was a beautiful person who loved well!! Thank God for justice.
So happy to hear they FINALLY got some compensation! Wish Dale were still alive to benefit
I read Skloot's "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," and it was a very moving book. I was so angry that it took this long for the Lacks to finally get justice. It's never too late to do the right thing. I wish Deborah Lacks were still alive, but at least, the family is still around to see Henrietta's story be told and to receive compensation due to them after the biotech companies made billions over her cells.
I remember reading biographies on Ms Lanks in high school as I was considering different fields of medicine. I hope this is the beginning of offerings to her family with many more to come.
Wicked set of people..
