Catherine Louisa Pirkis (1839-1910), often credited as C. L. Pirkis, was born Catherine Louisa Lyne to a middle class family in London. She became a prominent author of detective and mystery fiction in the final quarter of the 19th century, publishing 14 novels between 1877 and 1894, after which she gave up writing in order to focus on campaigning for animal rights. She co-founded, with her husband Frederick Edward Pirkis and some like-minded friends, the British National Canine Defence League, which still exists today under the name 'The Dogs Trust'.
As a writer she is best remembered for her last published work, 'The Experiences of Loveday Brooke, Lady Detective', a series of adventures featuring the eponymous sleuth, almost certainly the first female detective in fiction, and the first to be created by a female author. An insight into contemporary attitudes to the revolutionary nature of the character may be seen in an 1893 review in the Glasgow Herald, which, after praising Brooke's insights and detective skill, added "We are just afraid Miss Brooke is too clever in catching criminals ever to catch a husband." Almost inevitably "Miss Brooke" became known as "The female Sherlock Holmes"; she certainly shared Holmes' eye for detail and ability to see past the obvious solution to find the truth behind the crime. Pirkis died after a long illness in October 1910, just two days before her husband also died; they were survived by their two children.
'Drawn Daggers' first appeared in June 1893 as part of 'The Experiences of Loveday Brooke, Lady Detective', a six-part series of stories which appeared in the Ludgate Monthly magazine from February to July 1893; the series was subsequently published in book form by Hutchinson in 1894.

This story is one of a short series featuring Loveday Brooke, one of several "rivals to Sherlock Holmes" who featured in British periodicals in the 1890s and early 1900s. She is almost certainly the first professional female detective in English fiction, and the first to be created by a female author. Thank you for all your research, storytelling, & a/v production of quality Victorian writers❣️🎁🪆
🧵🪡📖 The research to bring us these unique works!
Like other listeners, I too AM SUCH A BIG FAN❣️🎁🎉
What a fine voice! Thank you!
This may be one of the first authors I've heard that I'd actually consider as "rival" to Doyle's Sherlock Holmes works. Excellent story. Beautifully read. Thanks for a thoroughly enjoyable hour Simon Stanhope!
Thank you for the details you have put in the channel for us & we all appreciate you!🧚♀️

Simon, every single video you put it is like a mini-Christmas-awesome!
Hurray, another Loveday Brooke and another story read by the inimitable Simon Stanhope! Thank you so much, Simon.
Pleasure, thanks Katy!
I look forward so much to your uploads Simon! I’ve now listened to every story you have narrated. Your narration is very good & your voice is so easy to listen to. Thank you ♥️🇦🇺✌️
Thank you so much! More to come, when I can... it's a busy time of year, but I've got lots of stories on my to-do list for the weeks and months ahead!
@@BitesizedAudio Music to my ears! Even more so after January 1st when most of the holidays are over and we're all snowed in, it will be nice to look forward to an exceptional short story! Thank you Simon!
Hi
The narrator brings this story to life.
How wonderful - a short story from the Victorian era about a "troublesome and undesirable suitor". Even better his name was Danvers. Had Danvers been a "bounder" or a "cad", I am sure Miss Pirkis would have arranged for Loveday Brooke to foil the union. I have no doubt the happy couple lived happily ever after! Well performed Simon!
Thanks Michael. I thought Mr. Hawke's nephew Jack a potential bounder, too... Glad to know you enjoyed it!
@@BitesizedAudio No doubt! Jack had bounder and cad written all over him!
A pleasure, as always.
Lovely Loveday. Lovely Simon. What a combo! ❤
Aww flip - the glorious Loveday! I missed this dropping earlier ...
Thank you for creating this. You are the best at finding unknown and obscure stories from the Edwardian and Victorian era and interpretating them in the most creative manner. You're talented and hard-working and I'm so pleased I found this your channel. 👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌👏👏👏
Thanks so much for your kind comments Hannah. You didn't miss it by much, I think you were the first or second comment! So glad to know you enjoyed it
Excellent! Thank you Simon 🌺
Loveday, such an intelligent & resourceful lady. Many thanks Simon, perfect narration as always xx
She is indeed, I enjoy reading her adventures. Thanks Lynda
Thank you so much Simon for another wonderful performance!
Yes!!! Just what I needed today! Thank you, Mr. Stanhope. Hugs from Texas.
I thoroughly enjoy your stories. Thank you so much.
Best Voice Actor ever !!! The accents are
Superb, I'd be stuttering Simpleton.
Extremely kind of you to say so, thank you!
Yay! Another Loveday Brooke❤️thank you 👍
Thank you so much Simon! Delightful story!❤
Thank you, Simon. Just what I needed, an interesting yet mellow distraction after a yucky day.
I count you among my blessings, Simon, thank you again.
What a lovely thing to say, thank you Tammy!
Ok, so I see the notification.
Then I happy.
Two seconds later, I'm Dreading it being over.
Anyone????

@@BitesizedAudio I have listened to every one of your videos two and three times.
Thank you for the splendid work.
I love this channel to the point of criminality!
Sorry I'm not trying to be facetious but I don't understand this comment, to the point of criminality?
@@jameshughes525 Yes.
I want to have nonconsensual * relations with stories told in this channel through brute force.

You're most welcome, thanks Marc
Excellent thanks 👏👏
I look forward to these every night!
Just perfect.
In hospital Simon! Thank you so much for this- this picture is of my neighbour (bed) and she is 91 with more energy than me!! Love this author which I remember because of the effort you make by using pictures as I never forget a Face. Another reason to ADORE you and this channel! You take care of yourself Simon and thank you for all your blessings to keep me entertained here in Charing Cross hospital 🏥❤️🩹😇
So sorry to hear you're in hospital Maria, I hope you get well soon. Thanks so much for your lovely comments, I remembered this character was one of your favourites. All best wishes to you - and your energetic neighbour!
Always such a pleasure when you post. Although I cottoned on to this one right away. 😊.
Ah yes, the clues are all there with this one... I think the first time I read it I guessed part of the solution fairly early on, but not all of it and I got some details wrong. But the pieces fall into place as the story progresses
A very pleasant story! Thank you!❤
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks Emily
A little stressful that a young woman couldn't pick her own husband and had to go to such lengths to marry who and when she wanted. Even down to having her letters read by others.
Looking forward to my walk tonight. Thanks Simon!
There is no need to thank me for listening Sir , I. Thankyou for your very talented time and effort.
Settles down happily with tea - much better now :) Thank you Simon
👏👏👏I haven't heard that statement "past cure should be past care" before.
Yesss.... Thank you kind Sir!
Always enjoy your audiobook narrations! Your voice makes all the difference and brings the stories to life!
Enjoyed this. Very clever plot. Thanks Simon.
Paint to your readings often. The best. Thanks very much.
Very kind of you, thank you Barbara 🙏
Excellent, just excellent!
Thanks again for sharing these wonderful works in such superb way. Your listeners and these 19 th c. Writers are both well benefited.4
Very enjoyable, excellent narration and sound quality, thank you.
Watching you in your introduction is as pleasant as your amazing narration.
Brilliant, I look forward to every story from you. Thank you, Simon for making my day
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it
Wonderfully narrated as usual. I was very amused as to Loveday's description of the house as reflecting early Victorian furnishing as somewhat less than stylish and drawing a comparison of the maid to the furnishing as somewhat faded and sour. Very enjoyable story. Mr Hawk was also amusing in his worry about his wife's disapproval and his total bewilderment regarding the situation.
This is a charming Victorian conspiracy. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Glad to know that, thanks for listening
Thank you so much.
You do a superb job.
Sue
Enjoyed your appearance in Hammer and Nails (HorrorBabble).
Thank you! I enjoyed doing it too, it was lovely to be part of it
Another ingenious mystery neatly unravelled!
Particularly enjoying
Loveday Brooke stories.
❣️muchly enjoyed! thank you!!
WONDERFUL! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Wonderful story!
Thank You *Simon* for bringing these stories from the dusty shelves into the light of the Internet; otherwise, we ... most of us anyway, would likely never know of their existence. I only have a BA Degree nothing higher, but never heard of most of these more obscure ones you have on your channel. It is good to have a female detective & author who wrote her in as female. I think she was beyond her time in her modern vision w/strong women characters.
Indeed so. Thanks Miji Yoon, I really appreciate your thoughtful comments
I have a Master's in English Literature, have been a professor, and have not heard of them. These are not in the Canon. There are so many good works not covered in academic studies as they are considered pop or pulp fiction I guess. Lots of these can be found on Project Gutenberg, works that are no longer under copyright. Greetings from "Mayberry," North Carolina.
Great work
Great story Simon. The stories you choose are also so entertaining.
The best narrator in the business, and the audio levels are perfect. 👍🏼
That's very kind of you to say, thank you. I especially appreciate the comment about the levels, when I was first starting out I had a lot of trial and error and I think I overdid it on a few uploads, but hope I've got the settings about right now
very cleverly written!
Yep, good stuff.
What an interesting story! I love your Channel! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
An interesting story. Superb narration!
Great listening experience
Many thanks Mr Stanhope.
Great Story!! 😊
very good story, going to check out your Christmas collection
Delightful, intriguing and satisfying g story! And very well delivered
Thank you!
I love these Loveday Brooke stories and the Max Carrados ones too. I do love a good detective story Simon. A pleasure to listen to as always 😊😉
Yes, I think they're my two favourite detectives too. More to come from both...
@@BitesizedAudio well that's good to hear 😀 I hope you're being monetized again Simon. I still listen on bandcamp and here. Not sure which benefits you most?
When I listen to these stories, I feel like I have drunk deeply of strong cordial, or a very old mead.
It's just truly funny that the author would use 'that' word in its outburst connotation rather than anyone's sexual connotation.
I hesitate, in my writing, to use words with somewhat duplicituos definition. It's just the choice that I make.
Thanks Simon for such great reading.
What a clever lot of scoundrels. And I can't say I find their cause unsympathetic. Well played, the lot of them! And, as ever, well read.
Thank you!
I know this isn't part of your stated repertoire, but I'd love to hear your voice and intonation telling the Lovecraft tales, The Call of Cthulhu, and The Shunned House. If you ever decide to expand.
Loveday’s my heroine!
Thank you
Thank you Simon!! Great as always!!❤
Thank you!
Love day!!!!❤❤❤
great stuff
Great channel
Thanks.
A fun listen. I am not a fan of audiobooks that last 3 to 4 hrs. Shorter listens can be completed during a drive or while completing.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your support and kind comments
Well, today RUclips was Ruined. It took me from *:00 AM to 4:35 PM to get signed in and to watch your videos. Now the Ads cannot be ignored, and I am in Dismay
Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that, I hope you manage to get it fixed
Utterly delicious!
Simon Sir, listened to all you are magnificent!!!!! Please could you say what those tunes are that you play....both charming. One is music box single notes and the other is tune like an old-fashion waltz? I am a 78 years senior citizen, bed ridden. Your reading selections provide me with so very much pleasure and knowledge, million thank you s..
Thank you so much for your kind comments. The two pieces you mention are both by Esther Abrami, the first piece is called 'Remembering Her' and the second one is called 'Esther's Waltz'. Glad to know you enjoy them!
Marvellous as always! Thank you Simon for your wonderful narration! Loveday got to the bottom of it, but certain Victorian attitudes took a bit of a tumble in the face of…well, perhaps more “modern” sensibilities! Shocking! 😉
Cool

Found myself "unsubscribed" somehow today though I've enjoyed your content consistently for years. I'd heard you warning this was happening to subscribers but this is the first time I've experienced it first hand...
Hmm sorry to hear that, yes I've heard of it happening before - not sure if it's a bug, but glad to know you've re-subscribed: thank you!
You sound like the voice I remember from the old Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons. I think it was someone narrating a cartoon story in-between the Rocky and Bullwinkle clips. The voice was irritating then and for some reason still seems odd.
I have been paid by blasphemy!
