I'm just thinking of having one of these guys being a quest giver for the party, one of them being a wealthy NPC who asks the party for favors...but what I think would be cool is having him seem kinda eccentric like most of the rooms of his house are no bigger than 60' ft , or how in every room there is always some kind of weapon and armor set as decorations......things most people might find odd but wouldn't question that much but for this NPC they matter.....no blind spots and no matter what room he is in he has weapons and armor to use

you could get one step further with the hints.
like maybe there is an NPC who' owns a helmet with no eye holes, maybe there is an elf who can be observed sleeping instead of meditating, a drow who can't speak undercommon, maybe he reacts to things you do outside his line of sight.
on the flip side the character could be pretending to be blind, wearing a blindfold and acting like they have limited understanding of the world around them.
i would also up the quality of the humanoid forms, by giving it the physical racial traits of the race it turns into (but not spiritual ones like elven meditation or any extra languages or spells the race would normally get) so when in its humanoid form it can actually see and if the race has dark vision, it gets dark vision, if it transforms into a lizard man, it can bite and so on.

Mostly because of how useful having a sentient shapeshifting ooze along would be and also the back and forth between the bard and a slime.

If you want to make it really dangerous, have it approach the party like a regular slime. They get ready to fight a dumb, jiggly cube when suddenly it transforms into a man in armour mid charge, leveling its open palm at one of the players as a sword shoots from its arm.
Edit: I also remember someone else talking about sentiment humanoid slimes who became that way by consuming mainly humanoids, to the point they begin to take on physical and mental traits of the beings they’ve eaten. Eventually they may even stop acting hostile towards people and possibly even become friendly.
Only thing to remember is that they tend to be extremely mentally stunted by most standards. (Think Chunk from Goonies) This is just because they’re slimes, and honestly it’s for the best. Imagine gaining sentience and empathy just to realize you got it by eating dozens if not more than a hundred people.

This kinda gives me a cool idea for a party/campaign. Each member has some kind of dark secret and none of them are what they appear to be. Over time the events of the story will slowly force the truth to the surface. The party will learn that the bard is a werewolf or the wizard is a super well preserved litch or ogre barbarian is a polymorphed pixie. The players each keep their hidden forms secret and only the dm knows all the secrets. Maybe they use two character sheets. One for the person the others think they are and one for the real character. Maybe dm doesn’t even let the players know about this and each thinks they’re the only one. Or maybe the party forms because of the secrets. They’re a shadowy black oops group that can’t talk about they’re real identities for safety reasons. Or shady guy (possibly bbeg) threatens to expose them unless they join a party. Maybe they join because they know something on the journey to bbeg castle or in a dungeon or whatever could expose them and ruin the life they’ve built for themselves.
Just an idea. Feel free to steal it.

👍👍 Possible workaround for the Armor Problem (getting your gear through the small gaps that your body can squeeze through):
    Scale Mail and/or Lamellar.
Pass those pieces through one by one if necessary and have them float up through your body to emerge sticking to your surface/skin 😁
_"This... stuff... came squirting out from under the door. But the sound it made... it was grinding, scraping something over the stone floor. More and more of it bubbled up from the doorway and it grew upwards, this creature, and its skin became steel. That horrible scraping, it was fragments of armor! Hundreds of them! It carried them inside itself somehow and then practically covered itself in them, the shape of a man! It looked right at me, through me, and I swear it had coins over its eyes, like a corpse. I looked across to Olaf and he was smiling, reaching out to greet the thing like it was an old friend! He starts passing it his keys, and it looks at me again with those wet coin eyes... I passed out. And I never saw Olaf again. A couple of people say they've seen him round the market after dark... I hope I never do"_

I think it would be really cool to have one of these things be slinking around a town or estate of some kind and sort of admire one particular person. Then when some sort of tragedy befalls that person, the creature then takes on the humanoid form of that person. This would be a really neat plot hook of some kind where the party thought this NPC had died but suddenly, bam, they are back and acting kind of different.

I like the idea that the Ghaunadan gains sentience from a regular slime consuming humanoids and over time. The combined essence that makes up the personalities of those that died create the foundation of the identity the ghaunadan develops over the course of hundreds or years. If it absorbed heroes, it becomes a ghaunadan that uses the frame work of their lives to decide I'm I good. If those it absorbed were evil creatures, it is likely to become evil. I like the same with its appearance, it is more of an amalgamation of the general appearance or the once that are the most dominate traits.

I think a neat idea would be that the Ghaunada can change into any humanoid it wants to, but chooses not to. Because, for each new form it takes, a new personality is created for that form, so every time it changes itself into its humanoid form, its personalities will compete with each other for which form it turns into, and you need to roll a die each time it transforms to see who it becomes.
2 personalities is a coin toss.
    3 personalities 1d3
    4 personalities 1d4
    And so on.
Each personality could have its own fighting style, and motives that likely differ greatly from other personalities.
And, if it makes too many, it loses its ability to change into a humanoid entirely.

Rather than drop any other weapons it’s using, I can see the Ghuanadan creating another limb to wield said weapon instead. And since it can take human form, I’m imagining this sort of shiva like entity with multiple arms each with different weapons, the intelligent ooze being a collector of armaments and such. Can also see it tricking adventures into think it a normal slime monster loaded with armor and weapons, luring them closer and springing it’s surprise attacks while their caught off guard. Would be a pretty interesting character to put into a campaign, maybe even have one that decided to be an adventurer itself even, whatever you want to go with.

I've homebrewed something almost identical to this decades ago, the Petrol Slime. I pulled out my little DM notebook right after watching Phantoms. And, as you imagined possible, I had a PC version of it. I guess on some level all of us AD&D fans are mentally linked somehow. Oh, my version had its natural form as more or less an oil slick... like the movie Phantoms. It's an old scifi-horror flick if you never saw it... still one of my favorite movies.

This monster is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It would be cool if it “gets hungry” whenever it runs into an especially stupid person and, thusly takes interest in the dumb character in the party.
I also like the idea of a serial-killer style Ghaunadan that has a weird quirk where it doesn’t eat one part of the body like the skin or eyes.

Honestly I think I could take inspiration from this outside of D&D or whatever (I don't play these games much, and the times I have have been the one campaign my and a few irl friends are doing (Which got reset once due to important stuff going missing irl. Lol)). Slime that's gained full sentience and can use a humanoid form is just a cool idea. :)

You pursue the suspect down the alley, around a corner, zigzagging through the back streets of the city. They disappear from your sight for a moment.
You run to where you last saw them, but they're gone. It's a dead end alley. Against the wall is a sparkling clean storm grate.

I wish I had found this channel a year ago. In an old campaign I ran the Ghaunadan could take the form of someone they killed. They were stuck with that one form. If they wanted to change their humanoid form, they would have to find a new victim to kill and steal their appearance.

I'm interested in the prospect of this creature acquiring skin from a victim, hardening underneath it and essentially doing its best Doppleganger impression. Possibly even going full Jeepers Creepers and collecting different features. While probably not bbeg material it could serve as a consistent foil or recurring nuisance. Slipping away before death in a crevasse or through a locked door.

  • @victorvaldez8869

I can see an easy hack to mix them with doppelgangers in your setting, if you easily do that. You could even go further & make shape changing predators totally amorphic and able to shift into oozes thus doppelgangers are ALSO mimics, it's just easier to rest for a few decades as a mimic & then a meal might bring itself to you.
If you want to make a world where they are a PC race I can see them as having their own racial appearance, like humanoids that look like they are made of a gelatin like substance that's colored but clear throughout. As a PC race I can picture them getting a negative racial modifier on deception checks if you go with the "Jell-O men" look by giving them a color changing trait that matches their emotions. Kind of hard to say "no, it's fine," and be believed when you are turning cherry red with anger, or deep blue with despair.
I can see a Ghaunadan aiding High Elves against the Drow as a NPC, maybe even a whole underground network trying to purge the Underdark of Loth's worshipers entirely.

okay.. I just thought of the best thing, and I wanna do it now...
Y'know the trope of the shop keepers? Where they're all the same dude, or all very weirdly conveniently placed? /it's just the same Ghaunadan/. Moving from network to network of tunnels keeping tabs on the party but trying to keep up disguises between each portal. Which lead to the scenario in my mind of the Ghaunadan slipping up...
"You approach the shopkeeper who has a wide smile and welcomes the party warmly. By name. 'Obongo welcome! Another round of your favorite ale?' The shopkeeper says, going to polish a mug that isn't there before catching himself."
... Then have the party go back and forth between several stores and the Ghanuadan just gets more and more out of breath trying to keep up with the party, the party faking it out and catching the shop keeper reform itself from a mass of green slime solidifying into their favorite tavern owner.
This would be the best long con ever that wouldn't really show up until the party starts to fast travel at higher levels.

A possible idea for them could be that it was an ooze that underwent a mutation of sorts when preying on a humanoid creature to the point that they also absorbed their victims soul so their humanoid form is that of their victim (could play it as either sinister or tragic depending on whether or not they retain the memories of their victim).

I love the idea that the party is indebted to or allied with a shady organisation, and they are ordered to assassinate a mysterious character that lives in the town, only for that person to turn out to be a Ghaunadan. Just imagine the rogue backstabbing the person, and them just going... "Sigh... again? At least I got a nice dagger out of it... *roll for initiative*", or for the wizard to try to kill them, them pretending to be dead, and them appearing in the town the next day, same as always.

Personal idea: the Ghaunadan takes form of the first individual they absorbed and also take in the memories.
A series of murders takes place, the first being of a small child, then a while latter members of a notorious gang start to end up half absorbed, what appears to be dissolved in acid… the ghaunadan had found the small child and absorbed it, taking on its memories and appearance. Filled with the emotions of the child in their final moment the Ghanadan goes after the members of the gang associated with the kid’s murder.

What if an infant ooze needs prolonged contact with a humanoid so it can learn to take humanoid shape, like learning to walk. So the parent would need to either capture or convince a humanoid for it's offspring.
There might be two very differing groups living by different philosophies. One group not caring if the humanoid if willing, the other believing deeply that consent is required.
From there the possibilities just stack.
