The pain I felt in seeing Kiryu cry over his regrets was simply too much.
Kiryu definitely sees himself as a good man who did nothing, despite having the power to do so.
At the time he became fourth chairman, he wanted nothing to do with the yakuza anymore. He wanted to be a civilian and nobody could blame him for that.
But now, with his growing age and the cancer hitting him, he looks back and thinks to himself, "What if I did something with that position? What if I could have saved people by being the leader? What if I led the yakuza away from the infighting and corruption?"
He's not wrong in turning down the position, but... it absolutely hurt to see him beating himself over a decision, that at the time, made sense to him.

I don’t think it was him not wanting to do anything with the Yakuza anymore.
It was more like he lost everyone dear to him in a crisis that happened right after spending 10 years locked away from them, and then finding this little girl, the living legacy of the love of his life he ended up losing, in the same situation. Plus the fact that they did bond throughout that game, and you can see why he decided to give up on that life.

Love Crystaahhl’s reactions as always, she’s always chaotic but also really, really genuine.
As for the story, the thing I disagree with the most is the idea that Ichiban should had fought Ebina. It would throw Kiryu’s development and thematic confrontation with the Yakuza’s past throughout the game away just to give Ichiban a confrontation that he already had. Bryce’s comically evil god-complex mastermind status that mimics a JRPG final boss fits him better.
Think about how Ichiban would had reacted. He’d spit out the usual “You’re wrong”, while Kiryu realizes that Ebina only went that far because he is a victim of a system the former chose to be a part of, became the biggest symbol of and had a chance to change, but instead ran away to live a nice peaceful life with his family. It’s a confrontation that his saga was missing, and him apologizing and begging for them all to keep living, because he himself found a reason to keep living for himself throughout the game is a really powerful moment.
And I like Kiryu not only choosing to face the sins of the Yakuza while entrusting their futures to Ichi, but also sparing him the pain of confronting a brother once again. It’s a very Kiryu thing to do.
Also, I don’t think Ebina is underwritten, he lacks screen time. His goals, motivations, and story are made quite clear, we just don’t have enough time with him to care. But “writing” in games isn’t the most precise of concepts anyway, so that might be what she meant lol

Let’s put it this way, the 3jima's literally gave up more than Kiryu did. Kiryu asked for more from them than the others. It makes sense for Daigo to be tired of the respectives shit. So the fight was kinda needed, both as a way to let off some excess baggage and for the three to regain some semblance of life, like how Kiryu did.

In all fairness Ichiban fighting Ebina would make no sense thematically. Ebina existed as a means of making Kiryu reflect on the past and what could have happened if he’d chosen to stay the chairman and make the yakuza better from the inside. Ichiban has way less influence on the yakuza than Kiryu. They probably shouldn’t have written Ebina and Ichiban as brothers, but it’s irrelevant either way. Ichiban didn’t even have some emotional connection to his mum. So why would he give a shit about Ebina, who he knows even less. The only reason he gave so many shits about Masato Arakawa was because they spent a good chunk of their childhood and adolescence together and Ichi grew to see him as a brother figure. That along with knowing how much his dad cared for Masato.

I feel like the problem with Ebina is that, I personally don't care too much about his motivations. His goal is pretty much "I want revenge for my momma!" while Bryce's goal is "Fuck you got mine" basically. But Bryce's goal would have killed thousands maybe even millions of innocent people and Ebina's wouls have eventually killed a bunch of not so innocent people. Not that even ex-yakuza deserve to die the slow death of radiation poisoning, but that problem could have been solved by any one of them going "wait, why would I take a job in a leaky radioactive plant? Freak this." and going to at least try something else.
That and feeling like Ichiban got pushed aside for Kiryu's swan song made the ending less great. I liked it still, but just getting the whole gang to stomp Bryce and then Ebina together would have worked better for me.

  • @BiopticMatt652
    @BiopticMatt652 5 месяцев назад +26

The problem with the idea that Ichiban should’ve fought Ebina is pretty simple actually, they already did the whole brother dynamic with Masato and Ichi, honestly Ebina being Kasuga’s half sibling is pretty pointless. That being said however, thematically, it fits more for Kiryu to have this battle. Kiryu took on every sin on of the Yakuza’s past, (even though most of it wasn’t his fault) because that’s just how he is. What happened to Ebina was no doubt a sin of the yakuza’s past, he was a victim, so he became hell bent on ending them in his own way. Plus, Ichiban had more connection to Hawaii, if Kiryu and Ichi swapped places, it’d make no sense. It’s not 100% perfect but I still think Ebina is a fitting final antagonist for Kiryu specifically, a representation of Kiryu’s guilt coming back to haunt him, again, even though it’s not his cross to bear, Kiryu will take it all on his own anyway.

  • @Aregulargameplayer
    @Aregulargameplayer 5 месяцев назад +90

Overall, there's three main issues I have with Infinite's Wealth story.
The main villains aren't as good as Shishido or Masumi Arakawa. Ebina has a great symbolic role as a great representation of the all the innocent hurt by the Yakuza and the vengeance they want, just like Shishido was a great representation of the old school Yakuza spirit that's having it's final gasp of death but you spend a lot more time in Gaiden getting to know Shishido and interacting with him while Ebina mostly sits behind a screen as the crew just watch Tatara dox them all again and again. And Bryce is so ludicrously evil without even being all that good of a thematic villain (he's basically the anti-Ichiban, down to his work basically making a mockery of Ichiban's Hello Work career in comparison) he may as well be the demon king and that's it. And then there's Eiji, whose actions post-Heel Turn are so over the top villainous and his lack of development makes his final scene feel underearned. Not to mention it's basically a do-over of the Masato Arakawa scene, just with a good ending this time. That final sequence is beautiful though. No matter how much Japan's public hates criminals and even the very idea of redemption, Ichiban will not give up his ideals. Because the true infinite wealth is friendship :)
Pacing is not great. Even when Kiryu and Ichiban were together, a very large portion of the story could be summarized as just trying and failing to find Akane without very little progress made. Ichiban and Kiryu basically blindly stumble their way through Hawaii's underworld which is a lot less compelling than Yokohama's underworld because of Bryce's influence being so all encompassing. Yamai is great though, full character arc completed and ended masterfully. When Kiryu and Ichiban split however, the pacing grinds to a halt because Kiryu's story is mostly about him getting his mojo back with loads of great side content but the main plot is basically the Kiryu team reacting to Tatara doxing them over and over. In comparison, the Ichiban story has its emotional climax quickly happen with Ichiban giving his father's ashes to his mom and then all that's left is kicking Bryce's ass, who as stated before, isn't a very compelling villain beyond how evil he is.
Finally, I feel like a lot of characters didn't really get utilized well. It'd be easier to name the characters that do: Yamai, Kiryu, Seonhee, Tomizawa, and Chitose. Nanba kinda just becomes the weird homeless guy and then just one of Kiryu's friend. Saeko gets done dirty with the romantic plotline honestly. Adachi is there to support his boy Ichiban and that's okay. Zhao also doesn't have much relevance to the plot anymore since he just wants to cook and not be too involved with the underworld. Joon-gi Han joins so late, the game lampshades it. As for Ichiban, this is really more of a personal thing. I feel like 7 Ichiban was y'know, not the sharpest tool in the shed, but he had a lot of street smarts. Here, Ichiban gets taken advantage of so often, it really makes him seem less smart than he used too. Also, 7 Ichiban had that breaking point where Kiryu had to come and beat it out of him. Here, Ichiban is just Yakuza Jesus and so forgiving, it personally makes him a bit less interesting to me. Like Chitose does him dirtier than a lot of the game's sidequest villains and not once does Ichiban get mad or even express the idea that she might bear some responsibility. Finally, probably the biggest missed opportunity, but Lani is just a plot device in the story. For someone the game equates to Haruka, she has like 7 lines in the story. I guess in the next game, we'll have to deal with the fallout of Palekana leadership getting passed down to her but boy is there just nothing for her in this game.

Agreed on all of your points. Tbh it feels as if RGG was so busy doing the side content for IW and building Hawaii that they realized they had very little budget left and just speedran the story in the last couple of chapters.
Not even mentioning just how straight up dogwater the first half of the game, Ichiban’s Hawaii section, becomes in retrospect storywise since all of it is just failing to find Ichiban’s mom and that’s it.

This is the single best recap of all the thoughts I had about this game. Kudos!
About the two villains: I think both of them were extremely underdeveloped. Bryce is basically just an evil overlord, while Ebina needed way more exposure to truly shine; thematically he has a very strong role, and I love it, but he needed more screentime to develop it fully. I see a lot of people bashing on the idea that Ichiban should've been the one facing Ebina (reducing it to a half-brother fight), but I think they perfectly oppose each other: Ichi wants redemption and to reinstate all former Yakuza into society, and pursues it through Hello Work; instead Ebina wants to eliminate them, or worse, condemn them to a hellish life, enslaved and isolated from the world.
I think this story needed a couple more chapters lol

I feel the tear gas scene did more harm than good. Turning him into a character that loves being evil and cruel feels like a weird, unnecessary step. I think apathy towards Palekana's evils, accepting that it's just part of the deal would've played a little better. Showing off a little of his downfall might've helped too.
Also, why was Chitose made the CEO? They know she's the one that harmed the company previously. They can put 2 and 2 together after she revealed herself. She had personal issues, but none of them were that she wasn't a CEO, they revolved around a poor relationship with her family. I think her ending should've been meeting with family and showing an optimistic future with them.

But, she knows he means well despite all that, so her ghosting him for a year is...a choice. And nobody criticizes her and only blames Ichiban.
Chitose ended up being the most interesting character compared to her and Seonhee, even if she's the umpteenth girl to have a crush on Ichiban. As soon the women are love interests, they get zero agency and it's frustrating that it's been happening after how many installments now??? Anytime there's romance, it's almost always underdeveloped (except for Makoto, bless her)..

Agreed that the ending was mid, but the whole redemption with Eiji I feel is misinterpreted. It isnt about Eiji, and the fact that he deserves forgiveness. It speaks more about Ichiban and how he has learned from the mistakes of the past. Eiji reminds him of Masumi Arakawa, someone who shouldnt have been redeemed because of his mistakes. However Ichiban is just that good of a person, he does his best to see the best in people and he saw a sliver of good in Eiji. @@MugdhaMahdiShams Okay so uh, a few notes
Ichiban *did* leave Bryce and Eiji to the same fate. he stopped Bryce from killing himself so he'd face actual consequences and he got Eiji to turn himself in to the police. The only difference is that he still stands by Eiji because he sees him as a friend and the entire reason Eiji became who he is was because of the Arakawa family, making Ichi feel more responsible for it. like of course he's not gonna hang around and try to help guide the maniacal cultist leader who murdered countless people and relentlessly hunted his mother down for personal gain into a better path. The difference in scale between the two and how Ichiban relates to them is really not subtle. The dude may be kindhearted and loving, sure, but he's also not enough of a dumbass to expect he can personally go up to BRYCE of all people and talk him into becoming a better person
Also, Eiji acting cartoonishly evil is literally the entire point. The whole thesis of Ichiban's plot in this game is about giving criminals and yakuza the chance to atone and redeem themselves. The messaging is pretty clear in that Eiji and other yakuza deserve the CHANCE to redeem themselves, but they still have to face the consequences for their actions and eventually become better people through their own actions. It makes perfect sense for Ichiban to guide someone he sees as a friend along that path.
And it's pretty damn important to keep in mind that these character's aren't just randomly in the plot, they all represent something and exist in the narrative to say something and tell a message. Eiji represents what the circumstances of the world and the yakuza can lead someone into becoming, and Bryce is literally the main antagonist, representing the opposites of Ichiban's ideals, pulling in vulnerable people and yakuza into a life of crime in a deranged murder-cult for his personal gain, he's essentially running an even more extreme version of the worst possible yakuza clan, so of course the narrative isn't gonna treat them the same lmao
don't get me wrong, the plot of this game has a TON of issues, with how thin it spreads itself and how undercooked certain aspects of it are, like how Ebina was handled. But Ichiban and his antagonists are like, the most thematically clear and well-realized parts of the story

Plus, Eiji would then proceed to get Wong Tou and Hanawa killed. Do their deaths mean nothing to Ichiban? Or would he only care if the bullets hit someone from his party?
Sorry, but you can't justify the cartoonishly evil part. His backstory is an idealistic journalist who got screwed over by the evil yakuza while he was trying to be a journalist of integrity. He has ZERO reason to be evil enough to not be a bit remorseful while sending a child to a gruesome death.

Controversial title there but I have the same feeling. I felt like there should have been a few more chapters which is kinda insane to say for a 60+ hour game. I have grown to be fine with the Kiryu scene but nothing else in the ending hit.
Eiji moment is great in a vacuum but I was confused because what the hell happened to this man, did he teleport? And considering he kicked a child down the stairs and seem pretty okay with her being killed for revenge to Ichiban it’s hard to feel anything for him.
Having the main romantic couple only interact at the beginning and end of the game surely was a choice, and the game barely take it seriously with the ending gag so I can’t see why should we do the same.
Ebina’s motives is pretty interesting all things considered but he also suffers from not enough screentime. The brother twist feels like it’s there just for some more symbolism and parallels because it isn’t like it really matters.
Also did anyone else expect that the two teams would merge at the end and they would tackle the final bosses as a team?

im sorry but saying that "it shouldve been Ichiban fighting Ebina" is an awful take
would it be a cool fight? Maybe
    but why would they fight
the only reason they could fight is "oh siblings dynamics" and thats it
While Ebina entire story and motivation revolves around his hatred for the tojo/yakuza as a whole and Kiryu specifically Ebina really didnt about Ichiban and they only see eachother at the beginning of the game and nothing more while Kiryu and Ebina had a back and forth with eachother and the same could be said for Ichiban and bryce
because would you really wanna see Kiryu fighting Bryce? Why would he they have no dynamic at all and Ichiban spends his entire arc surviving and plotting against him

Adding to the Bryce thing, I read a comment somewhere (probably one of Crystaahhl's streams or something) about how Bryce is basically the same as Ichiban, just in reverse.
In that comment, I believe they talked about how Ichiban leads others through compassion and respect, finding ways that would, could and (preferably for Ichiban) SHOULD benefit everyone, not just himself.
Bryce led through manipulation and fear, not giving a shit about how his followers felt and being willing to kill them if it meant his goals and his alone would be achieved. Hell, he even outright ENCOURAGES his followers to backstab and kill each other if it meant the "greater good" of the cult.

tbh the thing that felt the most forced was the internet drama. It could be just the general usage of internet drama in most media making this feel stale but something feels so off about it, like it's too one sided and doesn't make sense.
With the added "toxic waste" plot line and giant sea creatures, now I feel more like the game was actually trying to have an actual message but got gimped in the production. As in, they were going to point out actual problems and someone in the team went "no you can't say that, find something else" (with the "Kiryu got cancer from toxic waste and *definitely not* cigarettes" on top of that too)

what would have made the ending better for me are 1. Bryce's Plan should have been different. The whole game seems like it's leading you to think that Bryce is going to enact some kind of doomsday shit on Hawaii for his religion, and then it's just nothing. 2. Kiryu and Haruka apparently meet again off screen? We needed to see that as the player. We needed that closure after so long of Kiryu being "dead". That they skipped that part is baffling and really frustrating.

@@christianwright7581 I don't think Eiji wanted to redeem himself either. See the thing about being this pure force of good that sees the good in all is that you can't cherry pick like that. They both committed atrocities and they both tried running away from accountability, Bryce by trying to kill himself and Eiji by running from the cops.
So the writing for this scene is still shoddy at best.
They messed up by making Eiji act so evil before. If they'd gone for a more nuanced approach of maybe him not wanting to hurt Lani but still deciding his mission against the yakuza was more important, the redemption would work better. I agree with the title. The ending to 7 hit me much harder than this game's ending. I'm glad Kiryu isn't dead, but just like Crystal I was mentally preparing myself for it all game lmao. I also really wish they would've either dropped the Ichiban x Saeko subplot, or gave them a happy ending, to show that Ichiban has done some emotional growing. Might be unlike the character of Ichiban, but the way they handled it was very meh.
Unlike a lot of people, I do really like the Eiji bit at the end. The part of Ichiban that believed in Eiji til the very end was probably one of my favourite parts of this game. Definitely Ichiban's best quality imo. It was very, very over the top, but I think that was necessary to show the power of Ichiban :]
I do think I overall enjoyed this game more than I enjoyed 7, mostly because the overall gameplay was just better. They really refined the combat and I feel like the minigames in this game were better than in 7. And the reminiscing with Kiryu was just so much fanservice, but definitely the good kind.
I'd probably give this game an 8.5 or a 9. A very good game that was kinda put down by the ending and the love subplot.

While i do agree that daigo has acted extemely aggressive towards kiryu, which does seem a bit out of character, i do feel like kiryu has acted strange as well. I dont remember the events of every single game, but from my memory kiryu never is the one to initate a fight, atleast when he is with the 3jimas (Like he would only throw a punch when the situation is already tense, but he never escalates the situation himself to then initate the fight. They were all sitting peacefully and kiryu kicks the bees nest). I know this is all for a reason and kiryu wants to punch some sense and reasoning into them, like he always does, but as daigo i would feel highly suspicous if kiryu would just escalate a situation like that. And on the other hand, this is more like my personal headcanon, this could also just be daigo being really pissed at kiryu. I know daigo gets a lot of shit for always asking kiryu for help when the tojo clan is in shambles, but daigo shouldnt even have to ask. Kiryu, the supposed murderer of Dojima, asks his son, daigo dojima a 20 or so year old kid who doesnt have his life in check, hasnt figured himself out at this point and forces him to be the head of the biggest japanese crime organization. Kazama and Shimano are dead, Kashiwaga dies soon after, Saejima is in prison and kiryu leaves. Its a wonder that the mad dog of shimano, the person nobody is able to control, respects daigo and is willing to follow him, that atleast is a giant accomplishment. And after all these years, daigo tries his best but ultimately understands that he was not cut out for this job, distance himself from the yakuza and lives alone together with saejima and maejima in isolation. Then kiryu comes rolling around, even though he is supposed to be dead, and then tells them they are just rotting away even though kiryu is rotting away aswell (on kiryus defence, he kinda has to because of the daidoji). Heck i would be pissed off too, once does daigo not need to bear the responsibility to lead a organization and kiryu comes passing by telling him he has a job to fullfill.
I kinda wished they would have emphasized this, considering kiryus arc is kinda about coming to terms with his past, and i feel like daigo gets too much shit for reasons out of his control. And also because i still think the yakuza 6 ending letter is really hilarious and i wanted daigo to dunk on that

Whereas thr Kiryu half feels like it has a perfect villain for Kiryu's current situation (self loathing, wanting to waste away by himself).

Agreed. Loved the gameplay, the setting, the main characters, the sound and everything *except* the story and ending. The villains just felt too flat and uninteresting - Bryce felt generic bad guy because money, and Ebina just existing for the sake of pulling Yakuza into something new. And to add to it, it felt like everything to do with Kiryu's bucket list was really underutilised and wasted. Tatara exposes Kiryu being alive and that was the perfect opportunity to pull in so many familiar faces but somehow he still stays in hiding and apparently no one he knows sees the stream. Having proper scenes with Haruka after she saw the stream would have been huge but she's relegated to the ending and a Date cutscene.
A lot of IW just feels like missed opportunities and like they weren't really sure where to take things. I'm hoping LaD9 is a bit spicier.
EDIT: Oh man and how throwaway Kume was after the ending of 7... I was looking forward to him being part of the story and Ichiban getting revenge in some way, but he was just arrested off screen. Eiji's role should have been Kume in some capacity. Obviously not in Ichiban's face, but revealing that he was behind the scenes controlling Chitose would have been a huge reveal. And he has far more motivation to mess with Ichiban's life than Eiji.

I am very conflicted on Infinite Wealth the more I sit back and think about the plot structure and narrative.
On one hand, IW is a great improvement from Y7 in terms of gameplay and side content (though I did miss Dragon Kart). That said, the overall story and especially its resolution leaves left to be desired. Something about the entirely of its ending and its post game ending felt inconclusive and unearned, especially with Eiji.
Ebina felt like a rehash of Masato from the last game (and even Mine from Y3). Where it falls short is his mere presence in the story. With Masato, you see his establishment of him having animosity towards his father and even Ichiban. The whole ending of him earning his redemption as Ichiban pleaded for him to save himself WAS earned and you feel the heartbreak more so because we spent a solid chunk of the game understanding Masato’s character. Ebina was meant to be the anti-Ichiban, one where there could’ve been great drama. But, the two hardly interact, so it feels a very empty feeling overall.
Now, I haven’t seen this vocalized, but I believe that the ONLY game in the series to handle a romance sub plot very well is Y0 with Majima and Makoto. Hands down! Ichiban and Saeko could’ve been written so much better. Instead, it felt very stagnant enforced upon just for the sake of having a romance between two characters to begin with. I wanted to feeling happy for them but I couldn’t bring myself to because the development was underwhelming. As for Kiryu’s fate…. we’ve been robbed, especially after Gaiden and the marketing of IW with Kiryu’s side overall.
IW definitely has some highs and lows. But, despite its flaws, it’s far from my least favorite in the series (that honor is still dedicated to Y4 in terms of plot).

I feel like the intro went way too long and didn't have enough of a theme to tie it back to the beginning of the story. The first few hours of the game feels like I've been thrown into anime filler. It was hilarious to see Ichiban struggle, but I probably would have liked it more if it was all flashbacks you collect or something. Make it scenes you unlock for doing the dating minigame or something to give it a little more substance perhaps? The introduction at Hello Work was perfect enough to introduce who Ichiban is. Not just some “haha I want money and power” kind of evil, but more so a “I need to beat this way of life into the ground so it never has the chance to see the light of day” kind of evil. Also Eiji’s redemption wasn’t about him, it was about Ichiban. Ichiban had the chance to try and change an unforgivable person before, but he died right before his eyes before that could happen. This was Ichi’s second chance to try and help change someone for the better. He sees things in people that most others don’t. That is Ichiban’s appeal.

But you can tell they wanted to give a definite end to Kiryu's saga but still shoehorned in Ichiban to have him there. At least that's how it feels. I did like the game a lot though.

LAD8 honestly has one of the more lackluster stories in the series imo. It’s unfortunate because they improved the gameplay in almost every aspect, side content was great, and Hawaii was a great new location. But the ending just feels unsatisfying. It’s almost like this game is supposed to be a Part 1 to something else, since it leaves you with more questions and unresolved plot points than when you started.
Also, the end game/post-game content is underwhelming. There is almost no incentive to level up or switch jobs because you can beat the game (and the $20 dlc dungeon) very handily by just leveling everyone past lvl 60.

I don't know if its story is that much weaker, so much so as the resolution to it is bad. Like, compared to rubber bullets and "estranged twin brother from america, george kazama" and "what if character who was introduced to the series to represent innocence had a teen pregnancy" I don't think any individual concepts in this plot were terrible on their own, they just don't reach very satisfying conclusions. Its very difficult to tell what the game's actual stance on new media and cancel culture actually is, for example.

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one disappointed with the plot for 8
The characters weren’t as fleshed out and I feel like RGG wanted to do so much with this game that they ended up kinda “half assing” it…

You're tight, the ending wasn't mid....it was low.
And this is coming from a long time fan. They didn't earn that scene with Eiji, not enough proper build up.

Chitose and Sawashiro are in competition to see who is the worst ally. Despite the fact that Chitose is just someone I would never trust, I can see myself Chitose redeeming herself in future games. Idk if I can see Sawashiro redeeming himself after what he did to Kasuga and Arakawa, if he is alive.

About that "if he's alive" bit, quick question, and I'm not mad or anything just curious is all, but did you see the scene in one of the cutscenes after the EBina fight where it's focused on Sawashiro? Because uh, despite him looking like shit, he definitely seemed alive to me.
Plus it's possible Nanba and the others took Sawashiro to a hospital or something, even if (from my understanding at least) his worst injuries were the missing eye and teeth.
