Yes, I remember as a teenager in Melbourne Australia listening to it at the many wild parties that I went to back then. Still a brilliant song this one!
Seriously guys, "Hair of the Dog" is a classic must-have hard rock album! Every song is a burner! "Hair of the Dog" (aka "Son of a Bitch"), "Miss Misery", "Changin' Times", "Beggar's Day", "Whiskey Drinking Woman" (a classic 12-bar blues cover but they smoke it!)....not a filler song on it! Well worth your time, as well as the follow up album which, personally, I like even more: "Expect No Mercy"
Hi Guys, Nazareth were formed in Dunfermline, Scotland 🏴, in 1968, They're still going strong today but with a new line up which includes the original bassist 😄😄 The other original members of Nazareth have all sadly passed away, The most recent being lead singer Dan McCafferty ,He passed away in September 2022 aged 76 🙏🙏 RIP Dan McCafferty 🙏🙏
Saw them twice this summer, they're still an absolute force onstage, Carl Sentance is a great singer and he's done for Nazareth what Brian Johnson did for AC/DC.
My Dad bought me my first CD player when I was in high school (around 1988, I think). I was so surprised to get it, but even more surprised when I saw he had got me this 'Hair of the Dog' Nazareth CD! My Dad was always into rock going back into the early '69s, and I got my love of all classic rock and metal from him. Wish he was still here to see your reaction... I think he would have loved it as much as I did! Thanks to you both for bringing back memories!! ETA: Hope you get a chance to check out the title song, 'Hair of the Dog' from Nazareth as well!
We loved reading about that memory, Chase! We wish he was still here too but you've clearly brought him forward with you! Hair of the Dog seems like a popular next choice!
I played in a cover/original band in the 80s and we had a singer that actually could sing like this and hit those notes and higher. One time we played on an army base and when we did this song, almost every serviceman was in tears missing their girlfriend/wife /family.
I remember sitting at my turntable with pen and paper, trying to get all the words to this song. Lifting the needle and backing it up to play parts over and over again to understand what was being said. This would have been in 1975, and I must have had my heart broken yet again.
Axl Rose was a huge fan of the singer Dan McCafferty & Nazareth. He said without them he wouldn't be singing. He also invited Dan McCafferty to sing Love Hurts at his 1990 wedding to Erin, daughter of Don Everly, one of the original singers of the song.
Every time my heart was in shreds, Universe Radio tossed this song my way. It would be on the radio when I started my car or the classic rock station would have it playing on the stereo at a friend's house, or something of that nature. Every time.
This was THE slow song to dance to at those monthly dances at our local community centre around 1976-77. This song, plus Stairway to Heaven and Dream On by Aerosmith were the three big ones at the time.
You mentioned the album cover. Album cover art was such a big thing, especially in the 70s and 80s. Of course, that is when rock bands really got big, and we still had records (LPs) where there was enough space to have some really cool art! I kinda miss those days....
Album-cover art was of utmost importance back in the day, so Sam, your comment on the “visual” was appreciated. I actually have a wall dedicated to albums which I switch out at my pleasure. Anyway, let me get back to your video! Enjoy Nazareth, one of my favs for sure! ❤🇨🇦
absolutely! we would start the record playing and go over every detail of the cover front and back while it played. and if it was a bi-fold even better!
Love this song. The movie "Dazed and Confused" (also incredible) came out in the '90's, when I was around 13. After seeing it, I HAD to buy the soundtrack, and that's where I first heard this song. The whole soundtrack is actually amazing.
Great reaction folks as always, side note you are spot on with the Guns comment, Axel Rose has cited Dan McCafferty as his favourite singer and of course covered their song Hair of The Dog. Nazareth are still touring today but only bassist Pete Agnew in the band, the other originals have all passed away, drummer Daryll Sweet, guitarist Manny Charlton and the aforementioned Dan on vocals, cheerio from Glasgow.
Nazareth was formed in 1968 and Guns N’ Roses in 1985 so there is a lot of space between them though most 70’s through early 90’s bands probably were influenced by them. They were one of the earlier hard rock bands. “Hair Of the Dog” was huge. Was covered by several bands. “Razamanaz”, and “Expect No Mercy”, is another great song. “This Flight Tonight”, “Holiday”, and “Kentucky Fried Blues”, are all excellent.
Did you know that Roy Orbison did this song way before Nazareth. And yes you guys would enjoy some Everly Brothers. Speaking of GnR, you guys should check out their song Get In The Ring. Great banger and has this epic Axel rant that’s F Bomb filled towards the end. Great crank it up and rock out tune.
This was the song you listened to after every breakup during high school, 1974-1976..!! The Everly Brothers were the first ones to record it back in 1960.
I love Nazareth! I worked at the pizza hut. When we closed we blasted Nazareth on the juke box while we cleaned. Love Hurts and Hair of the Dog were our favorites.
This was 20 years before Guns 'n' Roses. Great band. Love the guitar playing as always. Rest In Peace, Manny Charlton, drummer Darrel Sweet and vocalist extraordinaire Dan McCafferty. 💐💔🥹🎶🌈🌉✨️🕊 Definitely their cover of Joni Mitchell's 'This Flight Tonight' next. Loads of original gems too. 💎
Late January 76 Nazareth warming up for Deep Purple at RCMH. First week of February Queen two night at Beacon Theater. Opening and closing shows. What a time for concerts.
I forgot to mention in addition to Hair of the dog, the title track, The Last Song on side a if I remember right, but either way, Please Don't Judas Me, was a huge fan favorite.
Phil, the childhood book you're probably thinking of is likely "Where the Wild Things Are" At least I think that's the name, been a long time. Also, since you asked, you should definitely check out the Everly Brothers. Wonderful harmonies and some truly beautiful songs, lots of hits from those guys.
Thanks a lot. Huge and iconic song and good rendition by Nazareth. Everly Brothers' original track with its mesmerizing harmonies are so unforgetable. Love also the covers done by Roy Orbison, Cher or Robin Gibb.
Lots of time spent, while in my teens, in backhole watering taverns and pubs.. day drinking and pool playing. Nazareth ALWAYS PLAYING ON THE JUKEBOX lol.. and ya. Taverns had jukeboxes. Sometimes i even miss day drinking lol. but that's the saboteur in me; I don't drink ^_^ xo :D
This song is a true classic. Vocalist Dan McCafferty passed away a couple of years ago, but had such an amazing voice.. tortured, raspy like he gargled with bleach, but still has pinpoint accuracy. Nazareth was an interesting band with a diverse discography, but we're mainly a hard rock band. This album was great, especially just after a painful heartbreak. There are a handful of famous Scottish rock bands. Pilot had a big 1974 hit with "Magic" and the band Simple Minds who had one of the biggest songs of 1985, "Don't You Forget About Me." I was a teenager when this song/album were released.
Heart put out an acoustic album and they did a cover of this song which was of course Ann and Nancy but John Paul Jones played with him and they did an awesome cover of this song also you need to also check out the other big hit on this album Hair of the Dog
I’m stunned 😳 I love this song but I had no idea it was a cover !!! ❤ “Hair of the Dog” is a great song from Nazareth It never crossed my mind but I understand the GNR reference for sure 😊
Really love this song by Nazerath, great vocals and instrumentation. Jim Capaldi made a totally different version of this song, a very upbeat version, which I also like very much. It depends on my mood as to which one I like the most. Worth checking out I think
A lovely ballad for sure. Nazareth played some very interesting guitar solos on their album Razamanaz. That song title was on the cover with lightning bolts. That whole album with Loud and Proud were both great albums.
I grew up listening to the Everly Bros. And I have never heard their rendition of this song ! They do have a lot of songs to choose from, but I think you should start with " Wake up Little Suzy "
OMG! When you made the comparison to GnR, I had never thought about it before, but Dan McCafferty's voice is the best parts of Axel Rose, without the worst of it. Really good call. Next hit the title track, Hair of the Dog, for a banger! More cowbell!!! 🔥
Most big British bands are from England so what you said is very understandable. This was such a great song, i have heard it in passing and it was so great to delve in to it with you both. I really enjoyed this one. Anther Scottish band/song i'd recommend are The Proclaimers - 500 Miles. You can really hear the Scottish accents in that one and it's a fun song
Also, I think I first heard this song in 1984, when I moved tot he USA and had left Mexico and a girl I liked behind. She had been into me, but nothing came of it, and while we wrote, she began telling me about other guys and I knew then that I had lost. Then I heard this song and it just hit me hard! Ah, the things we remember! 😄
One of my favorite songs by Nazareth is "Miss Misery", followed by a very long title called "Please Don't Judas Me". All tracks from the same album as this one.
"Love Hurts" is a song written and composed by the American songwriter Boudleaux Bryant. First recorded by the Everly Brothers in July 1960, the song is most well known in two hit versions by UK artists; by Scottish hard rock band Nazareth in 1974 and by English singer-songwriter Jim Capaldi in 1975. Roy Orbison had a version also; the two version I remember most is Nazareth and Roy's.
Great Reaction Sam & Phil! Nazareth was one of the best concerts my best friend and I went to! It was iin Abilene, TX about 130 miles from our little Texas town! They opened for Ted Nugent! They were on fire so much that we made them come out for a double encore! Ted came out did two songs and started cussing us out and called us every name in the book and we just all walked out! I have never listened to his music again! Years later we all moved to Austin and worked for IBM and his brother and I were at a club and bought raffle tickets for an autographed Nazareth Guitar and his brother won and gave to my friend for his birthday! Nazareth always brings back great memories and amazing music!🎸🤘🙏🏻
My top 5 bands of all time's . My top 5 vocalist of all time...take deep dive into their catalog and you will find the versatility in Dan's vocal Capapbilities... All four top notch musicians. RIP Darrell, Manny, and Dan..Darrell drew you in with those scottish tribal drum beats...Manny made that guitar sing like Dans vocals, best slide guitarist in my opinion...Petes one of the best bassists still going strong...and well Dan, he is either making you feel the pain in his ballads, or gettin straight up in your face with that grit like he does in Revenge Is Sweet, Bad Bad Boy, Vigilante Man....My top 5 vocalists.
I love this song. My only tattoo (which I designed) was inspired by it. Didn't know that Everly Brothers did it first. Gonna have to go check that out. Thanks! ❤🩹
First recorded by the Everly Brothers in 1960. Roy Orbison did a cover the following year. The first version I heard was Nazersth and was disappointed later when I found out it was a cover.
From "The art of David Fairbrother-Roe" "A Liverpool-born artist and graphic designer, Dave produced artwork for the original Isle of Wight Festivals, covers for Anne McCaffrey's pern books and album sleeves for Jon Anderson, Nazareth and Popol Ace."
Sam, this IS an iconic album cover. In this album was really kind of groundbreaking in a way. It just exploded in popularity. And of course the first track on the album where they use the voice box, similar to Peter Frampton and others, was just such a hard driving party song. Everybody loved it and it was on the radio all the time. But so is this one, which is actually a cover of a late sixties Everly Brothers hit, which you really ought to go check out as well for contrast. They are both great in their own way, and Nazareth only changes I think one word in it, just a slightly modernize it. But I absolutely love this. There's also decent footage of them doing this song live.
As a teenager in '76 you were likely to hear this album at any given Friday/Saturday night party.
Man to be there
Lucky
Ah yes FM radio for the cover song. Truthfully I had this LP back then and skipped this ballad almost everytime I played it. The album rocked though.
@@davidkessinger1581 LOL. I hear you ;) Must have album
Yes, I remember as a teenager in Melbourne Australia listening to it at the many wild parties that I went to back then. Still a brilliant song this one!
Hair of the Dog, Miss Misery, This Flight Tonight, and Whiskey Drinking Woman are just a few of their best songs, there are many many more!
Great choices. Actually "Love Hurts" is my least favorite song on the album LOL
I still have it😊.
New York Broken Toy, and Kentucky Fried Blues are fire also.
My absolute favorite is a lesser known track called No Mean City.
This Flight Tonight, or maybe Hair of the Dog is my favourite
Absolutely incredible voice - always loved this song and never heard it done better
THE BEST vocal rendition of this song EVER ! Take a bow in heaven Mr Dan McCafferty.
His vocals are PERFECT for illustrating the pain
Seriously guys, "Hair of the Dog" is a classic must-have hard rock album! Every song is a burner! I love "Hair of the Dog" on this album!
It was the B side of love hurts. It was a jukebox favorite.
One of the rare songs where the title appears nowhere in the song.
If you dig into their catalogue, it's clear Nazareth were one of the best bands ever.
Yes Yes Yes! Do the Everlys! They were a major influence in cross-over music! This is one of the best covers ever! Thx y’all!
I played in a cover/original band in the 80s and we had a singer that actually could sing like this and hit those notes and higher. One time we played on an army base and when we did this song, almost every serviceman was in tears missing their girlfriend/wife /family.
Everyone who's had their heart broken has sung this song and felt it.
That is just about all of us.
@@gerhardbraatz6305 nah
this is always one that i will never switch the radio station - must listen to the entire song when it comes on.
I saw Nazareth back in the mid 70s in Glasgow, still my all time favorite concert.
This is such an awesome song. Back before auto tune. just pure raw talent. Love your reactions.
Everything Nazareth did is fire.
I like their song , Whiskey drinking woman . Plus more

When I was 11 I actually got into an Nazareth concert, the last leg of the hair of the dog tour. An eye-opening experience 😊
Saw them live in 73 in my home city they were great.

You caught that great voice instantly! I knew he'd wow you. Heh heh. You've got a great ear for tone fr.
Hair of the Dog is a BANGER 😊
I still love this song after all these years. I went through a “metal phase” and this was on the playlist. ❤
Another great Scottish band
"Hair of the Dog" from the same album is another good one that rocks.
Totally different vibe, though.

One of the most underrated bands in the USA. Except worldwide.
they are awesome
This song was popular with local cover bands. I remember it at our prom in 76 - 77
🎊 Fellow Canadian Joni Mitchell wrote a song in 1971 called “This Flight Tonight,” and it was covered by Nazareth in 1973. It’s a banger‼️
Hair of the Dog, Whiskey Drinkin' Woman, Please Don't Judas Me... The entire album is so awesome. Takes me back to high school..

Highly emotional version of this song. Influenced Bon Scott, Brian Johnstone and Axle Rose in their singing styles.

Thank You I find again my Nazareth lp s in boxis.
I know it's said a lot, but it's fitting for Nazareth, they were a very underrated band.
I was 6 in 1976, heard this fist time at the roller skating rink in first grade
Studio version Nazareth song is called Holiday
You guys should react to 10 CC's "I'm Not in Love".
I definitely remember they used this in the tv show “that 70s show”.
You probably heard this song from a 2009 Nissan Commercial? "This Flight Tonight" (the Guitar...) should be next guys on your Nazareth Hit List!!!
Everly Brothers are amazing to cover!!! BEST Punk writers ever!!! Look into this
Ah you have to do "broken down angel " by them.....one of my favourite songs ever!!!!
The title reminds me of another song you'd like "Love Stinks" by J.Geils Band. I play it every Valentines Day. ;). Have a good day!!
You should check out the original version of Love Hurts by the Everly Brothers

I love their Play'n' The Game. All songs just great.
Love this song. Makes me feel like raz-m-nazzin' tonight...

Anyone familiar with Nazareth 1980 track( & video)" Holiday " ?
It's a great track!!
I remember hearing this song as a Teen growing up in the 70's.
One of my favorite songs by Nazareth is "Miss Misery", followed by a very long title called "Please Don't Judas Me".

One of my favorite albums...it does not disappoint
The harmony on the chorus the every other tamberine with the snare drum. The lead solo is panned right and left.
I think Sam's affinity is for the details which is pretty cool to me since I'm the same way!
