Just went up in N800FT with my buddy Troy. He showed me this exact thing, stalling is almost unnoticeable in this thing. The Long EZ is a GREAT airplane!
This is the best pilotseye video I have seen on RUclips. I have never been in a cockpit of any of the Rutan designs and this does a very good job. Nice knees buddy!
Thanks for watching. Glad you like the pilot's view. So simple, just strap the go pro to my forehead and go. I'm starting to post more videos, so please subscribe and see the cozy and Q1 videos too.
Mike, I've recently taken an interest in buying a plane and getting my PPL. I don't know why, but I'm really only interested in the canards, Probably due to the looks, speed, efficiency, and range. I'd love to get into something like a Velocity XL, but that probably doesn't make much sense to spend that much on s new hobby. Questions for you, do you think a Long-Ez or similar Cozy is feasible for a first plane? (I know the longer runway requirements). If not, how many hours do you think a new pilot needs before making the switch? What are your yearly costs (insurance, storage, maintenance, etc). Thanks for posting the video!
Highly recommend a Long Ez or Cozy as a first plane. I had 55 hours total when I made first flight in my first long ez. I’d highly recommend you join our club Canard Owners and Builders Association, See www.canardowners.com and and check the CSA page on Facebook. Message me if I can help or answer any questions. Also, go to the Rough River fly in end of September. It’s the best!
@@MikeToomey awesome, thanks Mike! Is there another model you would buy first given the choice? I'd love a 4 place, something like a Velocity XL-RG, but that probably makes little sense at this point, LOL
SS OFFSHORE if you don’t have your ppl yet, a long ez is probably a smaller financial commitment and easier airplane to learn in than a Velocity. The canardowners.com site has a map of members so you can connect with local owners and get a ride, which is the best way to decide on a favorite design for needs.
I was shocked and startled by the rapid onset of noise and disorienting tumbling motion, when you took the gopro off your head at 4:30. The stall, though, was a non-event.
The canard stalls at 65 knots, but it recovers quickly without any stick movement, so it’s not easy to see in the video. Look for the nose “bobbing” slightly up and down. I did some mild turns while in the stall.
I agree. Apparently composites and the canard look were too different for the FAA, and the commercial aircraft MFGRs. I think a small certified canard will happen eventually... if we aren’t all flying in autonomous drones.
It topped out around 190 knots if I remember correctly. This video was taken during early flight testing and the EFIS airspeed had not been calibrated. The analog ASI was accurate.
Karl Heaton testing completed last year. I bought it asa partially completed project and finished over 3 years. I sold it in March because I also have a cozy 3, which is very similar with more elbow room.
Karl Heaton yes, only some of the GU canards have pitch change in rain or bug contamination. Not a big problem.... a possible minor annoyance if anything. Best thing you can do is join Central States Association and find other EZ owners near you. The CSA newsletter are full of great info that keep you safe and save you money. Also, consider going to the Rough River fly in. It’s awesome. Good luck!

Thanks as I used to read about this decades ago now. Great to be able to watch it here....Laurie
WOW!!!!! From super-slow to SUPER GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Effortlessly! I was expecting a slight dive... NOPE!
Brings back memories of 2-stroke outboards
I believe the principle is that the canard stalls before the main wing, the nose drops, the plane regains speed and the pilot never loses control.
Unless you pitch the nose up high and stall agressifly!
@@nielsdaemen Just keep the coals poured on when you pitch up aggressively and go vertical.
Like that panel layout sir.
Thanks Bryan!
Nice job on that panel!
This airplane deserves the position that the Ercoupe had. No pilots license required.
180 knots :-D thats 330 km! Man, nice job with fixed
propeller!

What kind of RPMs do you get when idle in flight? I can't get mine much below 900 or so, seems like yours is much lower. Very nice.
I thought I missed it - just a gentle bobbing is all there is. The vid could benefit from editing and narration.
Yea,i didn't see no stall
Head mounted cameras bad idea.... Canards -- great idea.
what stall?

I don't understand why never a canard aircraft was successful in certified aviation. For me is safest because you never have a true stall.

@@MikeToomey I would hope for personal jet suits before autonomous drones.
It would take forever to crash with that stall rate lol, you'd land like a kit fox in headwind.
You don't stall this plane to land, that would drop the nose first. Rather, you fly it onto the runway.
202 kt or miles ?

I love it. What’s the landing speed in a long ez?
Canard stalls at 65 knots, so I use an 80 knot approach speed on final. I really like your videos! Thanks for your comment.
uneventful stall in those things
Makes them almost too EZ to fly. Thanks for watching.
what engine you running ? o-200? love the panel lighting too
Karl Heaton o-320, 160 hp
@@MikeToomey that's awesome is the testing complete? I'm looking at one at the moment 0 hrs complete build o235 powered. Did you build yours?

@@MikeToomey any pointers to look out for build quality wise and what's the deal with them in the rain? The cozy is a lovely looking machine.

what are the specs in terms of flight autonomy and cruise speed?
Not sure what you meant by autonomy, but it does have single axis autopilot linked to GPS. Top speed is around 195 knots, or 225 mph. Thanks
@@MikeToomey autonomy = how many miles can go at cruise speed.
Gabriel A. Zorrilla range at medium cruise speed of 160 knots is a little over 1000 nm.
Nice speed......clean air.....
Like your user pic. I see a baggage pod!
