The story of John Candy switching trailers with Maureen O'Hara just goes to show Candy’s kindness and generosity towards others around him. He was such a kind soul that was too pure for this world. Candy truly was one of a kind!
I believe the rest of that story is that the producers were so embarrassed to have a big star like John Candy in such a small trailer that they quickly found money in the budget to get him a new trailer as big as the one he gave to her.
Hey man thank you for this. Seriously. I’ve long thought about what could have been for Candy’s career as a dramatic actor and this video really does amazing job of showcasing how he was about to break out as such. I don’t know how you wrote and compiled this video without crying several times, because I shed a tear just watching it. This was a family favorite in my house growing up, and I’m glad someone shed light on it. It was long overdue, and you did a spectacular job of it. Thanks again.
That Tonight Show clip of Maureen O'Hara declaring "He's too young now..." really stands out now as both sweet and sad. All I could think was: Yeah, he sure was.
I remember it depressed me and I took a long walk around my neighborhood when I heard, just got a little depressed again hearing Maureen’s kind words about Candy’s future roles with Johnny Carson😢
It's beyond sad. And every other celebrity including Bruce Lee, Brandon Lee, John Belushi, Chris Farley, Phil Hartman, River Phoenix, Johnathan Brandis, Corey Haim, Brittany Murphy, Freddie Mercury, Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Prince, George Michael, Michael Jackson and of Course Elvis, just to name a few
Not a single dud from this channel. I saw Planes, Trains and Automobiles two months ago. Your infectious enthusiasm played a huge part in giving it a watch at last. It's a great and hilarious movie with a wholesome and sweet ending. Pretty much every time you talk about John Candy you always make me think "I've really gotta see this one".
@@hattorihanzo2275 No. It's just one of those movies I knew I've got to see, but just never found the right opportunity at first. I came close 2022, but it didn't happen. Then finally around Thanksgiving last year I thought it was about time for me to check it out, so I ordered a John Hughes box set (Where it was included with 4 other films he's written and/or directed). And now after seeing it I'm even more eager to watch whatever I haven't seen from Candy or Hughes yet.
Fun fact: according to Maureen O’Hara’s memoir, her longtime friend and “How Green Was My Valley” costar Roddy McDowall supposedly appeared in a scene in this movie that was left on the cutting room floor.
This movie brought together three generations of my family. My grandpa loved Maureen O'Hara from old John Wayne movies. I loved John Candy for his comedies and my mom loved a romantic comedy. We were all Catholic, hence riddled with guilt. Always has been one of my favorite movies.
It's a shame that this movie isn't more well known. John Candy gave his most likable performance, in my opinion, Ally Sheedy is sweet as his love interest, and Maureen O'Hara is also superb, having been persuaded to come out of a twenty year retirement thanks to Candy's persuasion.
I miss John Candy so much. There's just something about...how his heart and soul just bust through in every performance, my own heart aches to remember how he left us so soon.
I always love the kind of interactions between older stars who have retired or gone “out of style” and newer stars that are so mutually respectful and supportive like what’s shown in this video.
Thank you for mentioning this movie! It's criminally underrated. John Candy and Maureen O'Hara had amazing chemistry together. RIP to both of these legends.
I first saw this in the theater with my mom when I was little. I loved it then and still love it today. It's an underrated romantic comedy and underrated John Candy film.
This is one of my favorites John Candy movies. I think it was a great collaboration with John Hughes and Chris Columbus. An all around underrated movie.
I absolutely love this movie. It is one of my favorites. When I lived in Chicago I went to St. John Cantius--the church that the characters go to and get married in--every week for mass; not because it was in the movie, but I just thought that was a cool fact. John Candy is such a great counterpart to Maureen O'Hara in this picture. I am so happy it exists. I also love how they have old Comiskey in the movie too.
Absolutely. Such a great scene. Supposedly, he was very, very nervous during the filming as he was pictured with so many other great actors. Also, the portion of that scene where they cut from the present (in the restaurant) to the past (with Tommy Lee Jones) while he's smoking a cigarette is editing genius. Check it out.
I hope this film gets a nice bluray release. It’s at the top of my physical media wishlist. I mean, somehow Paramount heard you with your awesome Planes, Trains and Automobiles video and brought out the lost footage along with the 4K of that film. Hoping this video does the trick for Only the Lonely :) Except it’s a 20th Century property… which makes it wishful thinking.
The comparisons between “Only the Lonely” and “Marty” aren’t entirely fair. Marty didn’t have an overbearing mother who sabotaged her son’s relationships, and Marty didn’t get engaged in his respective movie. I love both movies.
I took my mom to see this movie when it originally hit the cinema. She used to show me old Maureen O'Hara films when I was younger and we both loved John Candy, so it was a nice fit for us to see together. We both loved it.
Theres nothing that turns around my day more than seeing one of your videos drop. Especially a John Candy/John Hughes film. Youre a youtube gem and bless you for your service
I love this movie. I am a HUGE fan of Ernest Borgnine and MARTY but this movie did a great job of capturing the elements that made Marty great and added some new, mainly comedic, elements as well. John Candy is one of my all time favorite actors, and I consider this film and Uncle Buck to be his best work.
You had my like even before I saw a frame of this video. Only the Lonely is a fantastically underrated romantic comedy. I know the chemistry between Candy and O’Hara is always singled out but I think what really makes the movie transcend is also the chemistry between Candy and Ally Sheedy. The fact that it has it both ways is the real reason the movie works so well. You believe O’Hara can be Candy’s mom and you can believe that Sheedy would fall in love with Candy.
I've always loved John Candy, especially in films such as this. I have spent several months trying to find this on DVD, and finally had succeeded in doing so! I feel that this is one of John Candy's best films! He and the rest of the cast did a fantastic job, especially the legendary Maureen O'Hara and Anthony Quinn. Thanks for sharing this video! 😎👍
I'm a 90s kid and used to be obsessed with Siskel & Ebert and remember the rave they gave this movie, and especially Maureen O'Hara's performance saying she deserved an Oscar nomination. I miss them, John Candy and Ms. O'Hara. The movie is a big cup of cocoa!
Candy's love interest, Ally Sheedy, had people doubting her acting abilities but not if they saw her movie "Maid to Order" She was great in the staring role. She is wonderful here, opposite John Candy. John as an actor was such a force of nature as was Maureen O'Hara. I need to get a copy of this movie.
How am I just hearing about this?? Thank you very much for featuring it. Cheese and rice, I'm almost in tears. As if I couldn't love John Candy any more, here I am. One DVD on "that auction site" is $40. I would love to purchase it digitally (hopefully for a little less than $40).
I haven’t even heard of this- it’s like finding out one of your fav bands had another album you never knew about. John hughes and Chris Columbus….what a pair of artists. Their movies feel like novels, they take their time, they never lose sight of where they’re going even though it feels like we’re just meandering through life. I love the way I feel when movies like this end. Life feels manageable
John Candy will always be one of the greats. It's sad watching that interview on Carson that we didn't get to see him in more dramatic roles. Nevertheless, this movie is a gem and, like you, I am glad to have a DVD copy in my own collection.
It's pretty much a tale as old as time: almost all comedic actors never get the credit they deserve for their acting chops until they do more dramatic roles. It usually takes films like this one or something like Jim Carrey in "The Truman Show" to go "wow, that dude is a good actor!"
I got a DVD copy of the movie during my Jim Belushi kick cause I’m a big Jim Belushi fan and John candy is great in the movie John and Maureen seem to have great chemistry cause it feels thst got along well on set in their performance as mother and son
This movie is so good, definitely in my top 3 of John Candy movies (the others being Uncle Buck and Planes, Trains and Automobiles). I loved seeing John Candy with Ally Sheedy. Very underrated movie, it was a very pleasant surprise and I felt stupid for not watching it sooner.
John Candy's four greatest performances, in order: PTaA. Only the lonely. Uncle Buck. JFK. The first three, because they perfectly married his strengths, both as a fantastic comedian, and a serious dramatic actor who wore his heart on his sleeve and could effortlessly bring you to tears. Although his role in JFK was brief, it was fucking spectacular, and stands as the closest we will ever get to witnessing Candy's skill in a full blown dramatic performance.
Something that surprised me several years back was how hard it could be to find John Candy movies after the VHS era. You'd think it would be as easy as buying a few Bluray collections. Not only do those collections not exist, it feels like only a handful of his movies even made it to Bluray, and I'm not sure if some even made it to (what would now anyway be long out of print) DVD?
'Only The Lonely' has John Candy in it, so I'm going to see it irregardless of what the critics may or may not think of it. That man is a fond memory of my childhood, so even in his absence I owe it to him to see his finest dramatic role 👍 Im hunting this one down!
A word of caution to those of you seeking out this lovely film. There are two cuts of it, the shorter of which edits out some scenes where Maureen O'Hara's character is saying some pretty objectionable stuff, but in doing so, it undercuts the character growth and ending of the film. The superior, uncut, theatrical version of the film is out there, if you know where to look, hint hint. I’ll also say that what O’Hara said about Candy’s dramatic chops is true. One of the sad things about John Candy’s passing away so young, is that he had the potential to go on and not only make some really great comedy films but also dramatic ones too… he could have had a career like Robin Williams.
Love that film. And another reason to keep buying physical media. It is currently available on Blu-ray. It’s one of my favorite John, Candy films. Thank you for reviewing.
Love this movie. Obviously inspired by the 50's film "Marty" starring Ernie Borgnine, but they made it just different enough and modernized it and is a great film, one of Candy's best in my opinion.
It's such a shame that this isn't available to stream, because after your review, I REALLY want to watch it! It looks like exactly the kind of movie I would enjoy!
I feel like this is in the same boat with Steve Martin's 'A Simple Twist of Fate'. It's mostly forgotten today and wasn't a big hit when it came out but was a nice vehicle for Steve to show off his dramatic side.
As an editor of film myself, I realize the fade to black pause behind John's trailer story was lengthened on the emphasis of the power of story. Just to let you know *someone* appreciated it. 😉
Thank you. They could represent Marueen O'Hara's charcter's legs. Another film's poster shows John Candy facing two pair of legs. The added one represents Ally's legs with a shorter skit.
I recently watched John Candy's entire catalogue. Sure, there were a couple of stinkers, but I loved every minute of it anyway. They still hold up, go watch them. Hot to Trot and Nothing But Trouble are the stinkers. Nothing but trouble is still worth seeing once though.
Thank you for covering this little gem of a movie. This stands out, for me, as one of the best Candy performances. Tragic - He had so much more to give.
Candy is by far my favorite comedic actor, and it is largely because he did his comedic roles with heart and believability. From Del Griffith to Buck Russell, and every role in between, he always felt like the guy you knew, even though you never met him. Absolute natural, and a wonderful human being as well.
Did you enjoy "Parenthood"? I loved it as a kid. I watched a few years back, as a parent, thinking that I'll probably still like it but it won't have the same impact. How wrong I was! It was infinitely better, and I don't think only because I'm a parent as I appreciated all the adult roles more, just from virtue of growing up. It's a great film.
Some trivia not noted: the baseball field date was filmed at the original Comiskey Park, and was one of the very last things done there before it was demolished.
I have loved this movie for over 30 years. Teenage me just connected to John Candy's character for some reason and then when I turned 38, it hit me on a new level. Definitely underrated and it breaks my heart we never got more performances like this from John because he was taken too soon from this world.
100% agree! Such an underrated gem of a movie. John Candy shines and it was wonderful to see the great Maureen O'Hara back on the screen again. So sad we never got to see John find his second act in great dramatic roles. But let's cherish what we have.
Apparently this movie is almost impossible to find on DVD. My parents bought a copy when it came out, and I remember we saw it as a family in the theater. 👍
My mom rented this for me when I was home sick in middle school. I remember it not being what I thought it was . But I also really began to like it as the movie went on. Now it’s one of my favorite John Candy movies . I have a DVD copy .
The story of John Candy switching trailers with Maureen O'Hara just goes to show Candy’s kindness and generosity towards others around him. He was such a kind soul that was too pure for this world. Candy truly was one of a kind!

Cant believe it'll be 30 years this March since John left us, still very much missed.
I remember it depressed me and I took a long walk around my neighborhood when I heard, just got a little depressed again hearing Maureen’s kind words about Candy’s future roles with Johnny Carson😢
He was like a fun Uncle for us 80's babies. He left us way too young.

I'd argue his video on Your Highness could have been left off, but maybe that's more just that movie being so obscene and literally nothing else.

I'm really glad you're covering this. It's such a criminally underrated movie.
John did a great job here. John also appeared in another Hughes project this year: Career Opportunities.
Such an underrated gem! I had it on tape as a kid.
A great movie to watch on Valentine's Day.❤
