For those who want to know: Alps were originally fairies. Infact the middlegerman term Alp or Alb has the same linguistical roots as Elf. So picture Legolas sitting on your chest and giving you horrible dreams.
Imagine meeting your wife, having three kids, living a life together, only to learn she was actually a night paralysis demon and your kids were going to be demons too.
More common than you think. In Brazil, one of the most famous creatures was a one-legged black boy with a red cap, called Saci. When the Saci loses his red cap, he became a slave for the man who stole it.
Here a few more tips to deal with Alps: -Throw a polished knife over them to let there true form appear -Pentagrams. Draw it over windows and doors to keep them from enterin. But beware: if you draw them crooked, the Alps can come in, but not out. - If they are humanborn, the offering of some lifestock gifted them voluntarily should keep them at bay
There's that one bit about the Alps otherwise human children who will apparently similarly thrive off of human suffering... I guess this is a mythological origin story for why sociopaths and/or sadists exist.
As a german: _Albtraum_ -> nightmare (used to be written with a "p" instead of a "b") _Nachtmar_ -> sleep-paralysis-demon-thingy I actually experienced this myself twice, creepy as fragg! -_-
I get sleep paralysis from time to time, at first it was terrifying, being unable to move and to speak, nut after a few years it became just an annoyance.
Nice to see a comical spin on the topic of night terrors, for a change. I've experienced them myself, and they're about level with an asthma attack as the most terrifying experiences I've had.
Well in that particualr case, you had a back water bishop with delusions of grandure calling anythinf he didnt understand (aka MOST things) Witchcraft. Which..... is how most "Witches" ended up being killed.
Cool story. I know that Alps aren't the only creatures that give you sleep paralysis/ nightmares. There is the Mara or Mare,a creature from German and Slavic folklore. The Mara does pretty much the same thing as an alp except the only difference is that a Mara is female and not male. Also Japan has some yokai that does this: the Makuragaeshi or the pillow flipper and Kanashibari( Also fun fact, the name Kanashibari is literally the term used for sleep paralysis) Makuragaeshi and Kanashibari seem to be harmless yokai, but they still cause sleep paralysis.
I get sleep paralysis all the time, pretty much every other night. Seeing (i.e. hallucinating) ghosts and demons and portals to other dimensions is pretty much normal to me at this point. It also seems like most people my age that I know also get it now and again, so I guess the number of alps must have increased some time in the last decade or two...
So,your telling me there's a giant eye that can birth demons in its mouth, even though it's an eye and shouldn't have a mouth and the demons can turn into butterflies?
myths are not stories that are untrue rather they are tales that don't fit neatly into the historical record which serve as a foundation to a culture this line is what i love about extra mythology
The german word for nightmare is Albtraum, literally alb dream. And a other name for this creature is Mahr or Nachtmahr . Yes we are going here full circle , it is related to the word nightmare it self.
0:01 I love that quote. 0:56 I thought I would see books there but then remembered that this video won't fit in Extra History. So this is Extra Mythology
fun facts : 1. the German word for nightmare (albtraum) is derived from these creatures so its Alb + Traum which means dream. 2. Alp or Darkalp is a new word for a creature that was called Mahr before that. this is where the German word Nachtmahr is derived from which then became the Englisch nightmare 3. Alp also is the old german word for Elf and in German, the word is spelled Alb.
Would be useful to mention somewhere what culture the myth is taken from, for the less familiar. "Alps" is kinda hard to look up out of context :P EDIT: before the last sentence, I mean

Dear extra credit's. I've watched you for many years. And yet have seen the faces of these talented and brilliant men. At least I want to see Zoye pleaseeee????????? SHE IS SO CUTE
Funny (and creepy) story: Some years ago, I just wake up by 3AM (insomnia is almost my second name), and I saw a face on the ceiling, over my bed. It was a pale woman face, without hair, with open mouth and wide eyes. I turned on the lights, and the face wasn't there, anymore.
I know this is a stretch, but remember The Road to El Dorado movie? There was a mountain range that looked like a great beast and butterflies flew from its “mouth”. Could this myth have inspired the artists?

That Alpha demon is wholesome, he doesn't bring others down to make himself feel better, but he inspire others to be better.
This is true and ironic, considering what he did to the "Bishop".

The laid back nature of these creatures added to the dark themes portrayed in the story kinda makes me wish Tim Burton adapted this into a movie

Don't forget of the South Slavic rain spirit called 'German'
You're right.
They're not nightmare creatures, they're representations of various people and things blamed and persecuted for various ills.
That was my reaction when I first heard/read of Alpes. Was in one of the Monster Hunter International books. Book four I want to say.
