- I found a pair of Bose Series I speakers from 1968. I went through a restoration including how to change out the grill cloth / cover. I also went through a real world test of the speakers. The proved to be able to move air very well.
I was able to find a Series II equalizer that worked fine with the speakers.
Will do. They sound amazing for what they are. I was confused about the EQ myself. Sending it through the tape loop never made sense to me.
Yeah I don't understand that neither
It only seems like it would eq the tape deck only
The tape loop is an access point between the signal input and the pre amp, in essence adding your EQ to the signal before it gets to the pre amp. An alternative hookup would be to plug the EQ in first from an external pre amp or whatever signal source you were listening to and then from the EQ to the amp.
@@ghostownaproach That exactly how I wired my equalizer to my Yamaha RX-V1800 (it hasn't a tape loop) and perfectly sounds.
Love the video watched it on my tv with my own 901 series 1 connected. Love the design just a pain in the ass the set up with the EQ, actually still not sure I did it correctly. Would like to see a follow up video with your opinion and maybe some tips how to connect ;)
Where did you find that grill cover fabric?
DID YOU FIND IT?
Yep, sure did. Amazon to the rescue.
I just picked up a pair of 901 Series I speakers. They are in nice shape, except that the EQ doesn't work, and the grill cloth needs to be replaced. I found a guy out in Seattle that will restore the EQ (new caps, transistors and resistors) for less than they are selling for on eBay. I was wondering, where did you get the grill cloth, and how did you end up wiring up the EQ? Thanks! Great video, by the way!
Ronald Lambert You can repair your own equalizer for under $12 if you have soldering skills. All you need to replace Is the capacitors
@@tlove000011 I was thinking about that. I replaced the caps on a TV someone gave me a couple years ago. But this guy replaces everything... caps, resistors, transistors.. I thought it might be worth doing the whole thing.
Great video! Is your receiver vintage? And if so how did you fit it to get Alexa? I just bought a Bose 551 receiver for my 901 Series VI and I have no idea what I'm doing.
Yes it is vintage. I just used the AUX out of Alexa and connected it to the tape input of the receiver. Aux to RCA
Hi there, great video. Where did you source the grill cloth?
Let me see if I can find the link.
Did you find the link? LOOKING FOR THAT CLOTH :-) @@MSGEngineering
The Equalizer is nothing more than a crossover in other speakers. It just eternal.
Yup. But it’s weird how it runs through the tape loop
Absolutely not true as a crossover deals with crossover points that's not the case with a EQ.
It only boosts amplitude on certain set frequencies it doesn't "filter" the bose 901 has only full range drivers. Due to the majority being reflected backwards. You need to boost the amplitude on the highs and lows . As you lose lots of that energy ..
That's the difference
A crossover is *NOT* an EQ.
An EQ boosts and cust selective frequencies. A crossover is a filter that limits frequencies. There is no gain in a crossover (filter). Totally different things.
haha, I snorted I laughed so hard when you switched to "behind the scenes", cool video. I probably would have remade the speaker grills from scratch instead of recovering, cause there's someone out there that would probably pay a ridiculous sum of money for the vintage grill covers lol, but it came out great and was a good video! Nice job!
You are probably right. It wasn’t my intent to switch out the covers. But I kinda ruined them trying to get them off. Thanks for watching!
series 1 and 2 are legends and better than the series afterwards.......... they were closed systems and used an eq. they did not have foam rims .. so they didn't rot too.
what did you do with the pedestals?
I cleaned them with lemon oil. They were in pretty decent shape so I didn’t have to do much.
I got a nice set of 901's series VI with the eq but I cant figure out how to hook the eq up to my marantz nr1402? Any one know if it can be done?
You hook it up through the tape loop. Do you have a pic of the back of the marantz.
Suggest googling Bose 901 owner's manual for the series you own. Then, either connect your Bose EQ through the tape loop, but you need a receiver or integrated amp with a "tape monitor" switch. If it doesn't have that switch, you'll have to go between the "pre-amp out" and the "main in" jacks (that's if your receiver has 'those' jacks). It basically comes down to the fact that you have to run the signal from the pre-amp through the Bose EQ before it goes to the main amp. Bose 901s will sound like garbage without the EQ, (but there are people who say they sound like garbage anyways, not me though)
so how do you wire eq
It goes through the tape loop. Sorry for delay.
I Love Bose 901 check out my setup
I love 901's, but hate your background "music".
lol
