i personally believe that communicative language teaching is a good way to practice the learned language but it is not the right way to learn a language especially for adults. if you ask someone who does not know Greek language to take part in a discussion hoping that it would help him to learn the language then the person is bound to fail, he could not understand the language and thus fails. you need to memorize phrases, you need to do a lot drills before even thinking about using the language in a communicative setting. Babies also practice each words hundreds of times before they gain the confidence to engage in a logical talk.
I understand what you are saying. But, do babies just sit in one place and repeat and repeat? No, right? They listen to adults and other children. They repeat what they hear. But they don't wait until they know everything correctly before applying what they just learned. They will try it out. If it is incorrect, they will repeat the correction given to them. Communicative Language Teaching does not mean setting students up for failure. It does mean asking them to produce shortly after they learn something. Having said this, there are numerous methods for learning, so I'm glad you have found one that works for you.
Peggy Marcy i got your point and you are right, what i meant was that in most communicative classes which i took as a student in the UK US the teachers just write a topic on the white board or introduce a topic verbally and then they expect the students to give them input and take an active part in the discussions, communicative approach is more suitable for learners who could use the language and one could not use the language unless he has learned some chunks of it and also knows the grammar. how could you expect a callow student to talk about a medical science or engineering related subjects, I agree that one benefit of communicative approach is the spontaneous correction of mistakes, but as i already said this method is more suitable for intermediate and advance students, it discourages beginners and my analysis is based on my own and other students experiences.
talash k can i give some idea. there are many teaching methods for kind of people's level, so we should find the best method that suitable with our students and this video is one of good methods.
