I like how the killer trys to trip Columbo up. The killer is good at faking his crys. Columbo watches every little thing and comes up with a scheme to catch him at the end. Columbo always gets his man.
If I was the commissioner, and I committed a murder, Lt. Frank Columbo is the last person I'm putting on the case. It's like, not only do most of the suspects Columbo investigates think he's an idiot, but people in the department do too. No one appreciates this guy.
I don't think Columbo KNEW until the end of the scene. Columbo is a detective. He's known within the department. His boss obviously respects his usual skills even if his mannerisms seem odd or he may sometimes have a bold theory, and he supports him in his work. There are lots of street cops who can do the footwork of following up leads for a supposed burglar, and with probably even more detectives on this high profile a case. For his boss to suddenly try and shut Columbo down when he's working out a theory in front of him is...strange, very strange, why should he not want Columbo to investigate in his own way? Even if it is fruitless, Columbo clearly doesnt put much stock in the burglar theory, trying to convince him toward a set perpetrator is incredibly suspicious. That's when it all becomes clear. The look on his face when he asks "you don't think I have anything here?"
His boss would be well aware of how exacting and tenacious Columbo was, and how often he was right. Every tactic he might try to convince Columbo to give up his theory put the spotlight on him more than before.
A LEGEND never mind about your famous singers and footballers Columbo is heads and shoulders about all of them, " AND JUST ONE MORE THING " you done it ..Ray in the UK
When someone who has always been smart starts acting dumb you have to question why; is he overcome with emotion or fatigue, or is he hiding something. Columbo treats everyone the same from the little girl who plays with his dog to the old millionaire: everyone is a suspect. It's a beautiful scene, especially if you are a fan of the series as you would know that Columbo has a lot of respect for his Guvnor and his guvnor has so much respect for Columbo that he often allows him to make powerful enemies.
I watched a movie once based on a true murder story that happened in British Columbia, Canada. A teenager murdered his mother and grandmother to get a five million dollar inheritance. So him and buddies staged a burglary and murdered the women. The Police knew something was wrong right off the bat. Most burglars are not murderers. They just want to steal something and go away. In fact, most burglars avoid homes if there are people inside. So out of all the houses in that neighborhood, only one house got broken into and two women got murdered? The Police eventually found enough evidence to arrest the teenager and his friends. That story reminded me so much about Columbo.
Columbo’s eccentricities used to crack up my late Mother to no end. She watched only a few shows on tv and Columbo was one of the and it was her favorite. I watched it back then with her and now alone over and over and remember her fondly because of it. PS her birthday would have been this Halloween. I have time to lament the day on this coming Tuesday; my grand niece has the same birthday. Happy Birthday ma and Kayden. I wonder if my niece likes Columbo. I’ll have to ask.
I don’t like to know too much about Columbo as a person. The whole is there or isn’t there a Mrs. Columbo and other things like First name . Even though it’s been proven that it’s Frank. And just because there was a horrible show called Mrs. Columbo, doesn’t mean there actually was one. I think there was. Any Port in a Storm he calls his wife to ask her about the weather when they went on a picnic. No one else was around. Why pretend? What I do wonder about is how Columbo who is a New Yorker, came to join the LAPD. I’m guessing got out of the Army after Korea and wound up in California on his way back home and either stayed, or went back and became a cop. Brilliant show. I always hope that some of the Murderers like Ruth Gordon and Donald Pleasence caught a break in court. Others like Kulp and Cassidy that were so unlikeable, I hope they got the book thrown at them
Columbo's style as a detective is to cast a net and slowly draw it in until there is no wiggle room left for the suspect. It was good writing perfectly suited to Peter Falk's ability to portray an unassuming and seemingly somewhat confused cop trying to sort out a mystery. Always fun to watch and I wanted to continue watching this one.
I, as my Mother did, always put our nightgown under the pillow. Or now behind the first two pillows - because I am a pillow fanatic. Colombo is not really a detective series. It is a performance. We are drawn in by Peter Falk's characterisation of Colombo. We know the outcome. Every episode is predictable. But we don't care, because Colombo's character is so engaging. I know of no crime series as engaging within the performance than Colombo. I think it should go down as one of the very best and most original crime series of its time and I do not think it has ever been bettered. I love it.
The way Colombo looks at his boss is like a viper looking at its next meal. Narrow, keen eyes that take everything in and reveal nothing. Sometimes acting is being able to change the glint in your eye and nothing else, and many of the better actors know how to do this. Peter Falk was lovable, tenacious, indefatigable and sometimes ornery. It's too bad he had to battle Alzheimer's in his old age. It's too bad anyone does.
I've always attributed this episode to Colombo never rising above Lieutenant. O.k. he's quirky, but he solves every majr homicide in the city, so the department can overlook that. Being responsible for the Commissioner being exposed as a murderer has to annoy the department.
i always tought that he simply rejected the promotions. he was happy as liutenant because he got to do what he wanted. a promotion could mean having to be at a desk supervising other cases, and he is a guy that is clearly happier bothering murderers for a couple of weeks and then arresting them
Columbo didn't back down when it was his boss. And in a different episode, he didn't back down when the CIA 'encouraged' him to put his investigation to rest. He didn't suffer bullies, he just dug in even more. Tenacious, thy name is Columbo.

I like how the killer trys to trip Columbo up. The killer is good at faking his crys. Columbo watches every little thing and comes up with a scheme to catch him at the end. Columbo always gets his man.
One of the most brilliant characters in television history.
Just one more thing
*Plants drugs at the crime scene*
If I was the commissioner, and I committed a murder, Lt. Frank Columbo is the last person I'm putting on the case.
It's like, not only do most of the suspects Columbo investigates think he's an idiot, but people in the department do too. No one appreciates this guy.
Favorite episode from the entire series..
"Commissioner, I think you are making a mistake..."
His boss would be well aware of how exacting and tenacious Columbo was, and how often he was right.
Every tactic he might try to convince Columbo to give up his theory put the spotlight on him more than before.
For people in the U.K. columbo is on Sundays on channel 5usa
You'd think his boss would enthusiastically agree with anything Columbo suggested, given his pedigree
This episode has the best ending ever. Columbo always gets right next to the killer right away. He's really good at the details. Just one more thing!
My favorite Columbo.
Others like Kulp and Cassidy that were so unlikeable, I hope they got the book thrown at them
No other actor can replace peter falk in a detective role never.respect mr peter falk alias columbo.
That carpet looks like the stuff we had in our living room when we watched this episode on its first run.
Columbo's style as a detective is to cast a net and slowly draw it in until there is no wiggle room left for the suspect. It was good writing perfectly suited to Peter Falk's ability to
portray an unassuming and seemingly somewhat confused cop trying to sort out a mystery. Always fun to watch and I wanted to continue watching this one.
I, as my Mother did, always put our nightgown under the pillow. Or now behind the first two pillows - because I am a pillow fanatic. Two, maybe three nights and then it was time for a fresh nightgown or pajamas. Many women of that generation who were raised by a Mother, Auntie or Grandmother, older sister did that and were taught that. Your robe was always laid across the bottom 1/3 of the bed. Slippers ready to step into. I had no one to teach this to and am saddened by that but grateful for ALL I learned from the women in my life - family and dear friends. 😻🙏🏾.
I love it.
He should have never put Columbo on the case 😀.
3:43. Nervous gulp from the boss. This acting is quite good, as panic starts to unfurl below the surface.
Anybody notice that the door swings out when he's on the outside of the house... yet swings in on the inside?
Simple explanation - outside scenes were filmed at an outdoor location, however the interiors were filmed at Universal Studios on a sound stage.
@@johnking5174 Correct explanation is that there are two sets of doors; and inner set that swings inward and outer set that swings outward.
I've always attributed this episode to Colombo never rising above Lieutenant. O.k. he's quirky, but he solves every majr homicide in the city, so the department can overlook that. Being responsible for the Commissioner being exposed as a murderer has to annoy the department.
i always tought that he simply rejected the promotions. he was happy as liutenant because he got to do what he wanted. a promotion could mean having to be at a desk supervising other cases, and he is a guy that is clearly happier bothering murderers for a couple of weeks and then arresting them
you just lost your badge...
Lol
...my friend.
“A friend in deed”. This and “Swan Song” are one of my favorite episodes. In song, we empathize with the killer, and here we certainly don’t.
7:34 lol Columbo's like "bet"
