I haven’t heard this song in probably 20 years, didn’t even know it was in my memory banks, but it came on in a grocery store today. Wham! I couldn’t quite make out the words but the melody came right back and triggered the same feelings as when it first came out. Thank goodness for these phones of ours. Searching a few key words yielded the name and now I’ve been playing it all day. Thank you Trey for the sincere reaction and excellent analysis. What a treat this whole day has been for me.
Almost the same for me, but I was taking a 💩 in a hotel! But I had heard it somewhere before, but it wasn't on "Something About Mary." But now finally I know who the group is and I 🤎 this song and it is now in my rotation. #goscots
I recently found this song again after decades of not hearing it. Younger people nowadays have no idea how it was listening to the radio and a song you like comes on and trying to remember the name and artist all while trying to record it without having the dj in the song! I'm 43 now and I think the last time I heard thus was in the 80s. Sidenote I've been driving my girlfriend crazy playing it on a loop
One of my favourite songs ever. Gary Clark is a great songwriter. I've just watched an interview with him about this song - it's based on his experience of losing somebody he loved because he was too possessive of her, and learned that lesson too late. The religious imagery is drawn from his upbringing as a Catholic. Thanks for the reaction.
Excellent analysis, Trey, of a very good and enjoyable song. Love is often pure and innocent(especially young and first love) and if it is lost, we never experience love in such a way ever again.
"Mary's Prayer" is certainly a cut above most late 80s pop in terms of catchiness, and it isn't bombastic production wise like some of the more flashy sounds of the day. The melody shines through like classic pop from previous eras. Lyrically it is interesting, too, and not simply a straightforward love song. If there is a shortcoming it is that the catchiness of the melody over repeated listens can become a bit irritating, but that may just be me. Back then it shined like a beacon of classic pop values in a sea of over indulgence, where it was fashionable for many chart songs to possess the subtlety of a sledgehammer.
So cute, it's one of those things you can describe (or I do) as something you could just eat, simply luscious. I heard it years ago, never knew who it was then heard it again some 33 yrs later & had to find out who it was......couldn't believe looking up 'soft rock' that it was on a compilation album with many American Bands and surprised they were from Dundee! A treasure and the video is cute too, the way Gary Clark holds his guitar & got a groove on.
Since the first time I heard this song on Napa’s “The Vine” radio station in 1993, or 1994, I never heard it again. I thought it was Mary’s Friend! Love this song!
You guys deserve more subscribers lol...love this song. "So when you find somebody you keep Think of me and celebrate" I wish I had this perspective...
Trey, This is a very catchy song. The music has melody and a bright upbeat tempo. You are right, the song is easy on the ears. I really like the lyrical imagery and nice poetic meaning. Your analyzing of the lyrics is deep as you search the meaning. Well said. I agree, it does have charm lyrically and musically. There are a lot of great songs from the '80's. Nice song choice Greg. btw, This Scottish group ,is named Danny Wilson ? I couldn't help but think about a Frank Sinatra movie from the 1950's titled ' Meet Danny Wilson ' . Maybe they got the idea from that movie as the name of their group. Lol
Yes, it is a fact that the group is named for the Frank Sinatra movie "Meet Danny Wilson" and it is quite a good movie from what I remember seeing it on television quite a few years ago.
@@keithm.7335 That is cool information you shared about the group naming themselves based on that Sinatra movie. Thank you for revealing that fact. I also remember it being a good movie musical with Sinatra singing a few tunes.
The Ten Hail Marys are prayed during the Holy Rosary. It’s a catholic Prayer. HAIL MARY, FULL OF GRACE. THE LORD IS WITH THEE. BLESSED ART THOU AMONGST WOMEN, AND BLESSED IS THE FRUIT OF THY WOMB, JESUS. HOLY MARY, MOTHER OF GOD, PRAY FOR US SINNERS, NOW AND AT THE HOUR OF OUR DEATH, AMEN.

But I did enjoy this song way back then in the 1980's. Still been listening to it now. Great beat, good catch and words. Think it does tell so some kinda story . People play this at weddings.... this and free bird and Every breath you take... are the worst wedding songs ever.... people don't get the premise of this song. People see it as a love song... it is not... it is regret of a jealous person that was a shit in a relationship and didn't see it in time. Lost her and is letting her go after finding out too late how he did her wrong.

Really appreciate that! And nothing like music to magically transport us back to a time and place
Funny how just saw this comment, same thing happened to me, heard this playing inside my supermarket.

They did get it from the movie, it was Gary's dad's favorite movie.

You should react to the movie, "There's Something About Mary" which has this song in it.
Great movie for sure Bill!

You should check out a more complex and slightly better song (if that’s possible) from the same album called ‘A Girl I Used To Know’.
