Ok but real talk, an animal crossing style game with survival horror elements sounds super rad
Hah pun
But is it nitro rad?
Reminds me of that one parody murder mystery game.
Well, Manlybadasshero has played a few Animal Crossing-themed horror games so far, so they are out there, just perhaps not the specific mix of mechanics you're hoping for.
same
Whenever I'd go swimming in Animal Crossing there was always a part of me that wanted some gigantic eldritch horror to rise out of the ocean.
DUDE SAME
i mean, isn't that just spore?
Only if you have a polite conversation afterwards with said horror
oh yeah its tiny huge mountain time
@@purplesmart4942 that sounds like something they'd do. Take some lovecraft inspiration to make a really scary looking monster who is actually pretty chill and wants to talk and hang out.
I'm not gonna lie, halfway through the rant about sponsorships, there was this tugging in the back of my head going "this feels like the buildup to a sponsorship segment, prepare to skip ahead 60 seconds.", Because it is so rare to see content creators speak out about how fucking ridiculous the sponsorship racket is unless it's the whole focus of the video; my brain is more prepared for an ironic twist than genuine complaints about obnoxious corporate shit.
And you know the ""best part"" about it?
Its only gonna get worse
I got that same vibe, but I was also glad he just critiqued it. It's nice not having to hear about Raycon earbuds or some mobile game that'll disappear by the next year.
VPNs are probably the most disgusting and relentless. It's just another scam and untrustworthy. They've made so many RUclipsrs I watch into shills making shameless plugs for this service.
It really is a problem with predatory ads but the problem is a lot of youtubers do need ads to help pay for food and home so it's this tough balance of shilling and creative integrity.
I'll admit, it's stuff like this that makes me glad my channel's format will never allow a sponsorship to be integrated organically.
I think it's so funny how now every video he makes, James finds a way to flex that he's beat every Jimmy Neutron game!
Gotta feel like a genius somehow 😂😂
Did it before Antdude did 😎. Who's the true gamer RUclipsr?
That's a flex well deserved good sir
Nitro Rad flexing like a True GIGACHAD 😎💪💪💪
Gotta get his mileage out of that suffering
Something I noticed is how much the cat's bright green colour stands out so much from all the dull grey colours. It really contrasts with everything else. Even just the fact it is a cartoonish cat, a animal many associate with comfort, in such a grim looking world really creates a weird feeling. The same way the rave, despite looking like a goofy easter egg, has some really dark lines.
Yes, and may be a coincidence, but that green color is one of the default colors the objects from 3D modeling programs come by default
The dance room easter egg reminds me a lot of Neuron Activator from Cruelty Squad, because there's some batshit crazy rave music yet the NPC's dialouge is philosophical and talks about suicide.
For example: "When the beat drops, I'm gonna fucking kill myself"
What is really ironic about that line is that the beat never ends up dropping.
Oooh, that's a cool detail, nice job.
@@SurmenianSoldier the sad part about this is that that’s legitimately funny
This video has made me realize why I love alot of your indie horror coverages. I like how you spend alot of time delving into the deeper themes and meanings of these games while giving your own genuine thoughts and feelings along side them.
It’s why I’m here so you nailed it on the head.
Agreed thats why James INTRO for the echonight beyond was the best part of that video and the one that me sub
really loved this episode, it felt REALLY personal in a good way
Best part of nitrorad vids imo, the genuine feeling of listening to a close friend very excitedly describing something they loved (or hated) and you just get drawn into their energy.
Same man. Same.
That placeholder song better not be just a placeholder! That gives the EXACT energy the NPC said! The energy of "Rotting corpse of a world, floating in a Void, while I'm just here to party."

Never thought I'd see an analysis of the modern gaming industry through a review of an indie horror platformer on itch, but leave it to James to do so and make it thematically fit with the topic.
Not going to lie, You're 100% damn right.
As someone whos studying to become a gamedev, a lot of the sentiments that nitro shares are ones that have been in my mind a lot recently. Specially when my teachers focus mostly on AAA games as role models and basically never touch on indie or more obscure games. It's making me develop a hatred for AAA games altogether, to be frank.
@@hellothepixel1107 That's because those teachers think that Big Companies like Activision or EA are better to talk about but they're ignoring that those companies have done some pretty scummy crap. Also, some big franchises that have AAA titles started out from the Indie scene.
@@landontrahan5770 EA and Activision doing scummy, manipulative things? Doesn't matter nearly as much as the indie dev who liked a picture on Twitter that offended me once

@@ootdegaOkay but you can't deny the things I've heard about those two companies.
I really respect how real you keep it with us, man. the fact that you refuse those paid sponsorships for crappy mobile games but simultaneously make a video like this that shines a light on a game you're passionate about and I wouldn't have heard of otherwise is exactly why I stick around. Your videos are like the antithesis of the "machine" you talked about here, it's awesome and the authenticity is much appreciated. Keep up the good work my friend
I hate how everyone keeps shilling for that bad gacha game, raid shadow legends, and lying about it for money
@@arzfan29 I mean...youtube fucks them sideways, they have to make money somehow. And you can always just skip through it if you don't want to hear about it.

*Words That Need To Be Spoken:*
Nitro Rad, I've watched your content for a while now. I remember when you were covering RPG Maker Games and due to your Great Review of OFF, I was really interested in your next videos. I know you've been through a lot, especially outside of RUclips but just know that you're honestly an amazing person! Not only are you someone that's able to shine light on parts of life we don't pay enough attention to. But you also bring forward a perspective that always makes me appreciate life a lot more. This review was very interesting and I appreciate the amount of work you've done this year. When you said that you would focus on trying to get more videos released this year, I can now see that for myself and I absolutely love the fact you are making content faster than usual. I feel the quality is still top-tier and most of your insights are always thought-provoking. It's really rad to see you sharing content related to Indie Games. CATWORLD is a game that's interested me for a while. I really appreciate the way it can tell a different story to every individual player. The fact we can look at this game as a work of art and see different things is why I love being part of a Community! Your Community is truly AWESOME! The Raddest of all! I just hope you're doing well. I hope everyone is doing well, stay safe everyone! Remember, you've got this! :)
Wow, words sure were spoken
Mario 64 kinda was a horror game in my childhood memories! Not for the spooky haunted mansion and the possessed piano or the usual stuff... but even just wet dry world or the castle itself were extremely eery to me. Now it feels like I have been in those places for real in my childhood and sometimes my nightmares bring them back.
I hope this game can give me some of those feelings back!

@@masonasaro2118 the spaces in there are just wonderful
After hearing that introduction, it surprises me you've never covered Gregory Horror Show for PS2. Its not a platformer but its definitely one of those "cute horror" games, more similar to Yomawari. Its based off a show about papercraft looking characters in a haunted hotel. It plays more like a puzzle game too with a lot of eavesdropping for puzzle solutions or locations of key item. You should def give it a whirl, a lot of it is basically what you described wanting more of in horror.
As far as I know, it was only ever released in Japan and Europe, which might explain why he’s not as aware of it, oddly. I have it and it’s a great game which would make for an interesting review!
also its based on an anime series that's told by a first person perspective.
Judgement Boy is the most haunting thing ever, becaue he NEVER does anything to you. Becuase he makes you have to live with yourself.
I really appreciate how Nitro Rad will talk about games literally no one has heard about. I love the idea of mainly doing indie 3D platformers this year, gives me a lot to look into.
Still waiting on that blue fire vid tho
I am also waiting on that blue fire vid, I played it myself and loved it, I would like to hear his thoughts on it as well
Bruh Nitro rad be like ima talk about this random cool thing i found
and that's what i love about him his Chanel is so him
I hope he does a horror, or something else year because I love when he does horror games, but I’d enjoy something different.
Yeah, I think I'm gonna play the Catworld demo :P
Weirdly enough Nitro, there's a game I know that, while actually being a homage to Sweet Home (The NES game that inspired every japanese horror games afterwards) instead of a Silent Hill one, tics a lot of your criterias for a good Silent Hill homage. (Good OST, not very intuitive or fun combat, stressful encounters, a pretty good plot, solid characters, and one hell of a twist in the secret ending that completely changes the way you look at the story.)
It's called Abaddon: Princess of the Decay.
But what's really sad is that it's actually a H game instead of a "normal" one. (99% of it is optional but yeah, it's still a H game to its core.)
So I find pretty funny the fact a H game developer put more care and love into his old school homage, than some triple A publishers. (We all know who...)
The good news is that another game in this universe is being developed which will actually be SFW so hope you'll check it out when it comes out.
Edit: Actually properly related to the video this time, this game looks dope as hell.
I passed this title and didn't give it a second thought due to the fact that its an H game, might give it a shot now.
It's the Type-Moon VNs situation all over again where the dev feels like they have to put in these kinds of things to attract customers despite having solid base for an incredible experience.
Thank you for the recommandation!
The game looks fairly intresting.
@@altnova6643 it's one a those cases where most folks judge a book by it's cover... though not without fundament. I remember when some H Flash Games had... the most bare bones gameplay, all for the sake of the sauce.
Heck, there's a side to that gameplay that I never properly understood: when you had to be losing to _see_ the sauce. When it only happened when you took damage or so. Isn't that, like, counterproductive to what a decent chunk of people were playing the game for? Or are some cases of that actually a message on that irony?
bruv this game was fun
@@altnova6643 I mean, at the very least the devs seem to enjoy creating a bisexual heaven where every character can have a relation to another. (The main side-activity of this game is shipping fuel lol.)
Another important thing to note is that sexuality is a major theme of this game. Whether that is to create tension, horror, or show the growth of some characters. I wouldn't say it's Maggot Baits or Euphoria's kind of disturbing but it is pretty nightmarish since you're much closer to your party members than average H characters. (Also while he's kind-hearted and very sweet, you'll notice early on that the protagonist Homura, isn't exactly in the most stable state of mind even in a perfect route, which is conveyed through what he finds attractive.)
I sense an incoming cat-astrophe. Since nitro doesn’t post too often I’ll be sure to make the meow-st of this

Hearing you mention NFTs was so surreal. I love those little rants you put in your videos they're always interesting
I'm totally getting Courage the Cowardly Dog vibes. The way the characters are all so cute and colorful, while the environment is so dead and ominous. There was even a really good Courage flash game called "Creep TV."
Thank you for your artistic integrity and transparency as a creator. It’s so refreshing not hearing brand deals on every one of your videos. This was a great analysis and admittedly got me interested in playing a game I might not have tried otherwise. Great work as usual
Hearing the idea of an Animal Crossing game with survival horror elements reminded me of this time I had this dream that Nintendo revealed this Animal Crossing game called “Animal Crossing: No Survivors” with a Resident Evil-esque zombie apocalypse setting and Left 4 Dead styled gameplay. You’d be fighting off hoards of the undead using tools like shovels, axes, slingshots, even fishing poles, healing yourself and your teammates with fruit, and making your way across various AC-themed environments that have been ravaged by zombies.
That sounds pretty neat honestly. I love stuff that subverts your expectations from the initial presentation. Maybe the game would play normally for a few days, then signs of something wrong would slowly creep in, little things you might not even notice, like a few villagers would be not feeling well and closing themselves in...and after a few days they still wouldn't be better and their homes would be locked. I dunno, lots of cool things you could do.
Sounds like a MAD or Robot Chicken parody.
But I love it.
Oh thats metal

Woaaah, that passionate talk about conveying feelings through art and the beauty of games that mean more to less people... really cool video!!!!! Really cool to see a youtuber express themselves so openly!
god the sponsorship bit was so appreciated. it's good to know you care noticeably more about the longevity of videos than a quick buck, a trait somehow rare in the youtube space.
It's always nice to see you give love to the smaller indie devs ! ♥
I'm not a platformer guy, but I do love the sort of weirdly exciting yet intimidating atmosphere that comes with urban decay. For me anyway, the most realized that feeling has come across recently is in Shin Megami Tensei 5. Somehow just this broken warped version of Tokyo, flooded with sand, bathed in unnatural light, and populated with gods and demons from every pantheon imaginable has just been an utter delight to explore. It's a weird feeling but one I can't get enough of.
Nier Automata
The ending of this video is what convinced me to sub, I've been bingeing this series on and off for a little while now but this seals the deal. You deserve all the support in the world for staying real, my dude. Cheers.
that ending kinda hit me in a way I didn't expect, thanks
Man it's so awesome you decided to look at this game, I'm sure the dev is super happy to get this much exposure I know I would be, I'm definitely interested in checking this game out and I'm certain plenty of other people are too
I can really tell during the conclusion that you studied those concerned children's advertisers PSA's and other ones from the 90s and 00s. Good video as always
Nitro rad wants a horror experience where he can jump 20 feet in the air lololol. And so do I!
8:41 - I walked by as my brother watched this bit of your video and it had me in hysterics. Love the delivery on it. Also loved that Animal Crossing Survival Horror game idea you had; sounds fun.
11:08 love this section of the video, very cathartic
it's a lot of fun how tangential your writing style is. sometimes it takes away from the video format but it definitely shows how deeply you care about these games n take all aspects of them into consideration.
I like that the TV in the intro is in the Newmaker Plane from Petscop
Hey Nitro -- as someone who has watched all of your videos I think this one might be your best ever. From the analysis of the game and you articulating why "less is more" when it comes to low-poly visuals, to getting to hear more about how niche and specific your (excellent) tastes are, to the critique of the system (advertiser/influencer/consumer relationship), I loved this video! Really great work man can't wait to see what video you cover next!
That little bit you said at the very end there is... inspiring. Maybe I shouldn't try to please everyone, and just do my own thing instead. Be genuine with what I make, and inspire others that way.
maybe also that speech at 13:28 that too lmao
11:26 I always thought about that! Like, if you were going to make a momentous video, having a sponsorship like loot box kinda makes me embarrassed for that era ever even happening in the first place. I appreciate that, and it still works wonders since I've binged your reviews before and never felt like I want back in time suddenly.
Just got past the part about 'rorshach-like fear' and while it may not be accurate, I believe this ties into 'fear of the unknown'. It's like how many monsters are scarier BEFORE you know what they look like- when it's crystal-clear what you're dealing with, you know what to expect. And for some, that's scarier.
But in those old, low-poly models, where you have some details you can just barely make out, your mind fills in the blanks- and you start wondering if what you filled in is actually right or not. It's a lost form of visual trickery; giving just enough details to let us wonder and assume while not confirming exactly what we're seeing.
I really love how passionate you are when you talk about games and I also the video a lot, keep it up👏
Always love hearing you talk about unknown indie games, there's some really interesting shit out there and you have such an audience to blast it out to
Now that I think about it there's nothing really preventing a horror 3D platformer from working just fine, keep the agile movement but either reduce or remove the ability to fight back (at least in a direct manner) and tweak the general tone of the game towards the abstract and unsettling. It's kinda surprising that it isn't a proper subgenre already.
The only example that comes to mind are the Amy levels in Sonic Adventure, since you're constantly running away from Zero while looking for a means to escape and all the damage you can do to it is to incapacitate it for a very short time, but the levels only get moody and claustrophobic very briefly so that tone is barely present. And now that I wrote that whole thing I remembered that there's a whole level in A Hat in Time built around the idea of hiding from a ghost in a haunted house, how did I forget that?
i figured out what the song was in that race scene its "Trance - 009 Sound System Dreamscape" i remember this song was used in so many videos... good ol times.
Awesome video! Please keep doing videos on random little indie games. So many gems just get completely lost because they don't become huge hits and it's always nice to learn about something new even when it's hyper specific to someone's interests
That very last part on the outro had me wheezing

I'm glad I'm not the only one that finds AAA games like horizon utterly devoid of creativity and fun. It's like the video game equivalent of fast food to me

From what you're saying about your taste in horror, it sounds to me like you're more into the surreal or abstract stuff you'd see from someone like David Lynch as opposed to something with a defined explanation like the horror movies Sam Raimi has done. It's interesting to hear your perspective on this stuff at times since it shows ways we're both really alike but also really different. One way we're both alike is we both really enjoy more surreal/abstract kind of horror, but while you seem to mostly be ho-hum on things like Outlast I happen to enjoy those games for their very different take on horror. Kinda makes me curious though, I wonder how you feel about Rockstar's Manhunt duology. I've often seen them labeled as "stealth horror" that's very heavily inspired by a combination of John Carpenter and grindhouse "gore exploitation" films.
I wouldn't say it is surreal/abstract horror rather your brain fills in the gaps in the right way.
Wrinkles are not scary... but if the wrinkles don't look right then are they worms or possibly stiches so it appeals to more.
It is why pixel art is still loved, you can look at one character and they appeal to a wider audience.
If it gets surreal/abstract it, at least for me, stops being scary because it becomes entirely up to me.
At least It's not Cats (2019).
Not too hard to be better than that
Great review! I want to let you know how much I appreciate that you avoid sponsored advertisements in your videos as you mentioned. I think that's a very kind gesture on your part, and I totally agree that they date the video. I would totally understand if you ever had to take on sponsors, but for now I definitely appreciate their absence. Thanks and keep up the great work!
honestly, imagine blending the themes you mentioned for CATWORLD, and an animal crossing style game with survival horror elements could totally work. Working off these feelings of existential dread would totally make the narrative side of it relatable. Now we just need to make it happen.
That outro was so out of left field and absolutely hilarious.
The conclusion portion of this video, complete with the Glover music, itself feels just for me. As an artist it felt really good to see someone "get it" and say it loud.
