New tips are only a couple $'s at the most. Soldering iron tips have a coating on them, once it's removed they are worthless. Don't do this or use sand paper on them. If you want to keep your tip in good condition, dip it in flux before you solder. And then after you're done, dip it again and melt solder on it before it cools. My tips last well over 5 years, with regular use, doing that.

And even then, tip refresher costs you a couple bucks and works like a charm, it cleans in a non destructive manner

I just use a piece of sandpaper in lightly sand to tip my soldering iron to get the oxidation off and then dip it in soldering flux saved a lot of time compared to doing 12 volt electrolytes

Most tips have a copper core with iron, nickel and chrome plating. Sanding or using a file will destroy your tips.

@@TekWar98 soldering iron tips are consumables. And sand lightly just enough to clean the crud off. although I have a couple that I have taken a file to a reshaped them down to very thin points because I needed to tips are relatively cheap.

Sandpaper or a wire brush works just as good. But there is paste that is specifically made to tin your tip or regular soldering paste or Flux works just as effectively. You should have soldering paste around always anyway. It ensures a good solder flow and connection. This process here is unnecessary work, which accomplishes the same thing.

The short-sighted philistines who always sneer "Just go buy another one" at your experiments just don't get it. If they could think outside the butt, they'd understand that you're using a visual format to demonstrate basic, solid principles that are damned useful. I've been adapting your various techniques for my own bimbo-rigged projects, and they give me a real edge--like, this knowledge has possibilities. I go digging around for old artifacts, and if I ever need to clean up some badly corroded metal geegaw, this method might be just what I need. Thanks!

That problem happen after every 2-3 days of use iron if you are a regular user so every time do this again and again bravo 👏👏👏

I supose that this sodium hypochloride reacts with any metal that is covering the surface of the rod?

    • @richphoenixpa

oye, one thing I notice is they don't use any flux. flux is acidic and used to clean the surfaces of oxidation and allow the solder to 'wet' the contract surface (regardless if it's the thing you're trying to solder or the iron itself). as for the electrolysis, if it was being used to 'resurface' an iron, I could see it, but it's usually a lot better (for temperature control) to just replace the head since it's important to have an exact thickness of the iron head to have accurate temp control.
