In Genesis 22, we see the time when God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. In verse 4, it pointedly said Abraham saw the place God had instructed him to go to on the third day which is a very clear prophecy of when Jesus would be 3 days and 3 nights in the grave. We also see the account of Jonah. Jesus himself said to the unbelieving people, in Matthew 16:4 that the only sign they would be given was the sign of Jonas (KJV), which was 3 days and 3 nights. We see throughout The Scriptures how different numbers often represent different things. The number 40 represents testing. The Children of Israel spent 40 years in the wilderness which was a time of testing for them. We see during that time how Moses spent 2 40 day periods receiving The Law. After the challenge of the prophets of Baal Elijah ran in fear from Jezebel and God gave him rest and enough provision to last him for 40 days. And most importantly, numerous times, throughout The Gospels, Jesus himself warned the disciples that he would be killed and that he would rise again on the third day. But for example the Israelites spent 40 years in the desert and Jesus spent 40 days and nights in the wilderness. Both are tempted and were times of hardship to bring about Gods plans. That is why there are so many number 40s in the Bible, especially in the time of Noah (120 years (3x40) in building the Ark, (40 day flood judgement), 40x40 equals 1,600 from Noah to Abraham, Abraham's descendants 400 years in Egypt due to his failure, three 40 year periods in Moses course, 4,000 years from Adam to Jesus, and Jesus' 40 day fast due to John the Baptist's failure to follow Jesus.
