It’s a neat enough idea, and I like the concept of a portable vise 👍 ...my only remark is that you should wire brush a surface before welding, you will get a lot better welds that way, and it’s never a good idea to weld on a rusty surface, even if it’s just surface rust.
You are the first one i have ever seen someone use a car jack for a vice dam that's so cool and my wife has two of them lol. And thanks for giving me a nother look at what i can do with a car jack.
Excellent tool you have created. If I were to replicate this I believe I would extend the length of the end cap so that it can increase the size of objects it can hold. Might as well get the minimum and maximum distance out of the jack.
I thought about making a log splitter out of a scissor jack kinda the same concept you have but instead of two flat points I was going to add a wedge .sure would beat swinging an Axe .
I like the idea. I have a 6.5" Wilton bench vise and sometimes it's just not big enough. But why did you weld the bottom of the outer jaw? If something HAS to lay flat it can't?
I was struggling to think of an advantage this was over a regular vise but this makes sense. Now I want both jaws mounted on a longer frame with the fixed jaw adjustable via a series of holes.

nice but only works if you know how to weld, i always wanted to learn how to weld, even in high school but one look at my shaky hands and the teacher said it could never happen , now i'm 66 and still would like to learn, tried getting lessens in my late 20's everybody just said dont bother sighing up here for classes with those hands. anybody that can weld you all so lucky
Some people make things simply because they can and to show others that you can turn something into something else that's useful. Others sometimes make things like this to be resourceful by way of using things that otherwise wouldn't be used for much and in some cases would be thrown in the trash but now can be repurposed. As for me and many others who don't have much money, videos like this help to show how to compensate when you just aint got the money to go buy a vice but yet we have left over stuff from when we took what we could off a vehicle before scrapping it and then also having some small misc pieces of flat stock laying around in order to fabricate with.
For smaller work you could use a vice. Generally the problem with a vice is the height it is mounted at. You end up working at a level that is not as comfortable as it could be. A holding fixture like this is portable and could be used on a table or the floor to be able to use both hands with the tool being used at or below your waist. Also could be made larger than a 4-6" vice for a lot less. Cutting, grinding and welding require less clamping force than other types of work. You have to remember that that type of jack is used to raise cars so it does provide more clamping force than you think. Great tool from cheap parts.
valveman12 the log splitter idea is good. I thought of making the press as there not cheap to buy. With the log splitter if u welded a good size nut onto the winding end u cud use a drill to operate it😃
His talent is admirable ... this is the gift of God in your life. Congratulations. Brazil. (É de admirar seu talento...isto é dom de Deus na sua vida. Parabéns. Brasil).
Very cool idea But you messed up on the handle It won't work with longer material The handle need to be able to slide so its not on the way. What u think¿
I find it interesting that the inch isn't as dead as it is touted to be. Square with MM on top and inches on the bottom with the conversion factor on the body. Long live the inch.
In Australia, I've happily converted to the metric system----Some things became a bit weird though, for instance: "I'll beat you within 25.4 millimeters of your life!" "Give 25.4 millimeters and they'l take 1.6094 kilometers"
The first thing I do when I get a new (or used) car is replace the scissor jack with an hydraulic. Considered them useless and dangerous until I watched this. Nice job.
Awesome!!! I like that. Of course I’m making one. 👍👍👍👍

Its a great idea as long as its understood that the more the jack is extended, the more pressure can be exerted with equal applied shaft torque.

Always like seeing ways to repurpose stuff that otherwise would often just be thrown in the junk pile and rust away

that is a good idea use a screw jack change to clamp vise
Wouldn't you be able to perform the work, that contraption can do, using a vise? Why go to all that trouble to make that?
Looks a lot lighter than a vise of the same size
