- WATCH THIS BEFORE COMING TO THE UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO!
In this video, I talk about the truth about studying engineering at the University of Waterloo. I am currently in the Electrical Computer Engineering (ECE) program and in my first year. I haven't seen any videos really of people in Electrical/Computer Engineering talking about their experiences, so I wanted to provide some insight on my own personal experiences so far having completed my first semester here.
Hopefully you guys enjoyed watching this video! If you have any questions, feel free to ask me in the comments down below and I'll be more than happy to answer them!
See you soon!
when compare to other universities in the U.S Waterloo university need to be big . I mean expansion of campus size without any wasted space. Also about financial support, the school need to support student not just rely on OSAP( whatever it is ) . Many prominent universities in U.S have own financial support for students. For example. more than half of Harvard or MIT student don't have pay tuition because they received financial support.
Yeah well they've been expanding the university quite a lot over the past decade. UWaterloo is only very well-known mainly in like the software/math field and electrical/computer engineering field within the states. I wouldn't use any "rankings" to compare Uwaterloo with other universities because those primarily compare research rather than actual employment statistics and average student salaries. For example, a student in ECE or SE in their last co-op term makes somewhere over a salary of $100k while in UofT it's merely $50k (via their PEY program), despite UofT having a better ranking than Waterloo. Depends on what you're going for, but obviously most people go to Waterloo to make money via the co-op. And for the financial support, Waterloo does have that plus it has the co-op which usually allows nearly every single engineering student to pay off their tuition debt.
US charge a lot more tuition, that’s why they provide more financial supports. I’d rather UW stick to the Canadian model
Bro the key is to stop going to class. Grind resumes and portfolios, trust. I’m in Me btw, sick video
bettt thanks man
@@jlau04 Its future me, your 1B is kinda fucked so go to class, but still grind your resume and portfolio
bro could u please explain? Is online cs degree worth it?
Hey Im one of the 15 girls in UW CE that also just finished 1A term. Can confirm gender ratio and non existent social life be tough but co-op is so worth it for anyone considering applying. Great video I totally agree with all your opinions.😊
thanks for watching, and i agree, even though the co-op employment rates have been pretty low it's still relatively better than other universities in canada
Am in uw ece 2a and somehow still here
Just keep trying and unite with ur friends when studying
Youll be fine
Thanks 🙏 I'll definitely try to keep that in mind, although it does still seem pretty academically demanding compared to how much more free time other programs get to have.
@@jlau04 so true but thats what we signed for 😂
😭 why’d I do this to myself
Great video man! I am going to gr12 so this was rly helpful.
Glad it helped!
True ngl. I'm one of the only 3 girls in my CS146 class ahaha

omg u made my choice even harder 😭 i wanna go tron queens from the social life and campus but tron waterloo has good co op, which one should i sacrifice?...
I’d go Waterloo tron tbh, you can find a social life here if you want to
Could you make a video on the study tips and how to get into Waterloo CE
sure maybe in the future
Thank you the video is really helpful! Is it hard to make friends in Eng facility? I just got accepted by management Eng and I’m thinking maybe people there are slightly more social? 😢
Yeah MGMT is a lot more social, youll be fine if thats what ur lookin for
@@jlau04 thank you for your help!
same! friends?
I kinda need advice for getting good averages in grade 12:(
Hey maybe i’ll make a video on that in the future! But just stay motivated and keep working hard tbh, that’s the main advice. and get lots of sleep
Heyy thanks for the video❤️!! I wanted to ask that is it worth to do MEng in ECE at university of Waterloo??? Does this really paysoff after the graduation?? Thank you 😊
Hey Naitik, i'm not sure sorry. I only finished first year so I don't think i'm the right person to ask
Arctic zombie speaking nothing but facts 🔥
thank you Steven 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Woooooooooooooo Eng life is epic
loveeee it so much
what coding language would you recommend to learn beforehand for the CE course? (Im starting 11th), also would ib or as/a levels be a better choice for CE?
C++ is what we use for the course but you don’t really have to prep that much beforehand anyways. You can even learn python and most of the concepts would be similar
and idk about IB and stuff cause i never took those courses
@@jlau04 thank you, do you think waterloo is the best university for CE in Canada and would you recommend any other universities for CE in Canada?
yeah
if i was a girl you wouldnt be struggling 😹😹
who said you needed to be a girl 😈😈😈😈😈
i love justin lau
:D
Yo great video, but i have a question, do you need any coding background to do ce? like what if I don't have any coding experience, will I struggle a lot?
Yeah you'll probably struggle a decent amount if you don't have any coding experience. This is also especially true when you're applying for co-ops. I would recommend learning to code now rather than during the first term of uni. Or study during the summer if you get in. Waterloo's coding courses expect you to have some knowledge and it gets challenging quick if you didn't have any.
@@jlau04 hey, thank you for your reply!!thats very helpful. but i’m just wondering to what level of coding should i learn up to so that i will be chilling for the coding aspect of first year, or struggle less? i’m really anxious rnnnn
@@chrisx2342 Waterloo for ECE has all of its programming course videos online. You should probably look at a C++ tutorial and learn till you get to like classes. I had programming experience before and I still found it a little bit challenging but if you just look at the ECE 150 videos till you get to classes and inheritance (or another C++ video tutorial) you’ll be set. Conceptually wise it’s not that difficult but sometimes the assignments are long.
wait you’re in rev too 😭💀

Hi,
I got into Electrical Engineering at UW. Do you think this would be a good discipline to follow if I am looking to be financially stable?
Yeah
this convinced me not to apply to waterloo. horrific admissions system to come up with this kind of engineering school. The admission system needs an overhaul. sounds like the worst university environment.
it's a tough environment and definitely not for everyone. For some, it's exactly what they're looking for, not so much for others. Depends on who you are as a person. Someone from UofT CS or Western CS could just as easily succeed as someone from Waterloo computer engineering.
@@jlau04 seems like waterloo is an incel breeding ground.

hi, i tried to connect with you on linkedin. I want to do a master's degree in this university and I want to get information from you. Have nice day.
Feel free to ask here
first of all thank you for your reply. I live in Turkey. I completed my undergraduate education on Mechatronics engineering with a score of 78/100. I want to do a master's in Waterloo. I lived in Canada for a year before. My IELTS score is 6.5. How should I proceed? Is there a way you can suggest me?
@@CaganHatapci Honestly i’m not entirely sure since i’m not an international student. Hopefully someone else in the comments can help, but all i can say for now is to try looking on the official uwaterloo site and see if you meet those criteria.
@@jlau04 Thank you for your help. I meet the conditions on the website, but I could not find any information about whether people from other countries were accepted or not. I wish you healthy days.

Hi Justin ! I got into Waterloo CE (No scholarship) and UTSC CS (50% scholarship). Which do you suggest I go to if one of my main priorities is to get into the best tech companies.
Are you trynna get software or hardware. Most likely i’d say CE
@@jlau04Hello, I just got into Waterloo Engineering and I am so torn between either Mechanical Engineering or Computer Engineering. Which one do you recommend or think is better?
@@dolphinsrcool12 comp eng if you like software, hardware, and embedded. Mechanical if you like doing cad stuff and pretty much non coding stuff
@@jlau04 thanks so much I think I’m gonna go with computer eng
