I just wanted to thank you for posting videos. I have struggled with depression for several years and being part of the SMA audience makes me feel part of something really positive and you are never on your own, like going round to your friends garage to fix cars and have some banter. I am sure there are many other people out in RUclips land who are helped by being part of SMA.
I became friends wth some mechanics while delivering auto parts, it was my go to place whenever I had a problem or just needed a shoulder, you meet some interesting people also who come and go, like the snap on guy, guys coming by with items that fell off the back of a truck, porn tape sales guys selling pirated tapes, one unfortunately died a few years ago but I still keep in touch with one of the guys after the garage closed in 2006, I even went to their houses, if I needed to borrow tools, they even delivered an engine hoist and engine stand to my house when I needed it.
LR Disco I know exactly what you mean, sometimes I play SMA videos just to have something to listen to for distraction so I can “get out of my own head” for a while (it’s a dangerous place to be for me!) plus car repair is interesting to me, I’m not a mechanic but I’ve always done most of my own auto and boat maintenance and repairs so I’m learning useful stuff at the same time.
News these days is depressing. 9 killed here, 6 stabbed there, 36 million without power. 3 Hurricanes and 6 tropical storms coming for Florida and Texas. An earthquake on 9.3 scale just hit Mexico, right after a solar flare exploded on 9/9 . In other news, Iphone now costs $999 and galaxy costs 666. Damn you CNN to hell. I agree with your comment. I go straight to RUclips before and after work to relax. I done disconnected that mainstream crap.
I know this video is almost a year old, but I want to thank you. I have this exact vehicle down to the color. My issue became so severe it would not start at all. Your video was a God send.
beechwood619 no the dorkman kit would be zip ties and glue, that was made in China! You install the zip ties and glue and let it sit 48 hours before installing it into the tank! At least Eric O's fix was a stainless steel hose clamp, probably made in the USA! AGAIN NICE FIX ERIC O
Rock Auto sells pumps for these for under $10. the pressure hose has a crimp clamp holding it on. The website also says the original pump was made by Magneti Marelli. Kinda strange S. Korea went to Italy to buy fuel pumps when China is right next door.
I just had a hard start condition on my 2009 Tahoe. I had good fuel pressure key on engine off, and good pressure while running, but after I shut it off the pressure would slowly drop off, about 7 psi per minute. I popped the injectors out of the intake and after quite a bit of searching I found that #8 injector had a wet spot on it. I replaced the injector and the pressure is perfectly normal now, hard start condition cleared. Thanks to watching your videos, I have put away my parts cannon and replaced it with actual diagnostic skills. Thank you Mr. O.
Now i have a hard start condition with my tahoe also but only after a long drive when i crank the engine again when its hot it takes a bit longer time, do you suggest looking up the injectors like you did?
No. That is a classic bad electrical thermostat condition. It is reading cold when the engine is hot. If you dont belive me Eric recently did a video on it, may want to check it out.
I found my issue only after hooking up a fuel pressure gauge and seeing what my pressures were doing. I am not familiar with an "electrical thermostat" on this engine. My suggestion is if you suspect that might have an injector problem, get a reading on your fuel pressure and go from there.
I think your fix with the hose clamp is better than the factory plastic clips. If it was my vehicle I'd say she was fixed baby! I liked how you scratched a line to tell when the ring was moving and used it again to re-tighten to factory specs. Nice trick
Knowing used car dealers, that IS the fix. Doubt they'll spring for a new fuel pump if it's running. Frankly, the way Eric has it fixed now is better than the OEM. Those clips look really thin and weak.
CO Jones Would not quite say better than OEM. The rest of the plastic will be brittle so something will give one day if the car survives long enough. Might be a better fix than some aftermarket module.
My dad used to keep a box of chalk in his toolbox. He would use chalk for alignment marks and to Mark the timing marks so they would show up nice and bright with the timing light. I still have a Craftsman timing light from 1966 that was my dad's. It has two leads to go to the battery and one to go to plug one. I think I have another one that uses a inductive sensor that goes over the plug wire. I always like the first one better
Thanks! I just tore into my 08 Kia Rondo. That fitting was cracked, just like the one you worked on. I decided to risk it with the worm screw clamp like you did. It starts up just fine now. The hardest part was screwing off that 5 1/2" ring.
I just bought a 2007 Kia Rondo here in California about 4 months ago another very spacious no blind spots with those big windows but now I am starting to notice and extend crank when turning on the car I'm not a mechanic I don't know nothing of cars but this might be something my car is needs fix. Just finished watching your video and what a great job you've done and I'm Amazed
There are so many people that share information on RUclips each one cannot be thanked just because of the sheer number of people but this shining star here has my thanks for taking his time videotape his vast knowledge of cars. Thank you.
That's why SMA and Eric O more specifically gets so many satisfied repeat customers. Whether the problem is electrical or just a plain broken tab on a perfectly good fuel pump, the end result is that the issue is caught and repaired. Eric O made the right call fixing the problem with the hose clamp. Im the first on this channel to want OEM supplied parts BUT to have the customer pay for a whole new fuel pump module because of 2 broken tabs is insane. The pump wasn't even broken but rather a poor cheap design by the Kia engineers. The clamp was secure and fixed the problem nicely. As expected he will notify the owner of what he found and give him any further options available if he chooses to replace the component. Even Eric O needs to fall in line on family movie night. Great job!
Mine had a ring like that which turns off, so guess what the directions said? It said "pop off" the retainer, or whatever. This is why watching this videos is so valuable.
Didn't seem like a priority. If it was he would have been there by seven like he promised. Probably not in a hurry to go home and watch another one of those kid movies.
Fixed better than new ! One thing I've noticed is how long starters last on fuel injected cars. Easy starting when things are working properly has taken most of the wear and tear off the starters. You could put a note in there with your business card explaining what you did and why. Date it and offer 10 bucks off on a factory repair if it ever fails and you'll also get your hose clamp back.
Roscoe Someone that's what I was thinking. Put a disclaimer note under that black cover. I bet that car goes to the junk yard before that cover ever comes off again. I do agree that liability is always a concern for mechanics.
Good fix Eric if it was my car and you called me up ,I would say leave it with the hose clamp on it's better than factory ,your a whiz at fixing things
Gotta be the cheapest fuel pump fix around.. I say send out and drive the beast! Usually when people here the word fuel pump they say oh crap gonna cost how many hundred's of dollars to fix. Good job Eric.
Was glad to see this video, I purchased Kia Rondo 2011 just 2 months ago, as my winter car. I did research on the vehicle, good reviews, & every time I saw one & the owner was there, asked for their opinion on it. Didn't get anything negative. It is like a micro minivan with lots of room. Had my mechanic look it over & he gave me a thumbs up. The price was very good, only had 80, 000 kms (48,000 mi.) The air compressor needs to be replaced but that wasn't a high priority for me, since it will be mainly a cooler weather vehicle for me, worry about it next year.
Known defects....this fuel pump fitting; A/C compressors - you found that out already, Window regualtors; AND - NEVER, EVER use anything but a Kia oil filter on the Theta Engine...ever!
Nice work, Eric. Your solution is perfect and better than OEM (going to assume it's a stainless clamp). Just mention what you did to the customer, offer to do the full replacement if requested, being a car dealer he'll obviously decline, and move on. Enjoy the movie!
First time watching his video and hit the subscribe button right after I finished it! You are the man! Great troubleshooting, lots of funny expressions, and the wife call at the end is like icing on the cake
I tell ya what Dr 0, your video editing skills are getting to be top notch... Your transition for the bigger hammer and the hose clamp were damn near seamless both in visual and audio Always nice to have a bigger 🔨 hammer for those times when percussive maintenance is your go to option!
1)that has to be one of the easiest fuel pumps to get to. 2)anti-spark punch, LOL 3)those dang o-rings love to expand. one on a mercury cougar was hopeless, I'm not ashamed to say I cut it down to fit and dabbed a little RTV to seal it, worked like a charm.
My wife's car did the same thing i put a clamp on it 50 thu ago and still working. I understand what you can do for your stuff that you cant do on a customer car.
I have a 2004 Volvo XC70 that had a crack on the top of the fuel pump in the plastic part that the gas goes through just before it exits the pump I filled the whole cavity with epoxy worked like a champ I think your fix is just fine. I’m sure the car salesman is just going to ship it.
Why do most foreign cars have an access to the fuel pump from inside the vehicle and American cars you have to drop the fuel tank to get to fuel pump? Even my 1977 Saab 99 had an inside access point....
Sean Spring I have a 94 Chrysler LHS that has a access door under the trunk carpet. Its one of the very few cars Chrysler got right. My 2017 Mitsu Lancer also had the same cover under the back seat.
Aristotle Yiannis those Chrysler's have that because the fuel tank is sandwiched between the body and the rear suspension system. Major pain in the a## to change the tank. Ive had to do a few, NOT fun.
My 98 Ford F150 has an access panel for the fuel pump.............. Oh wait, that's because I put one there lol. It makes life so much easier now to just pull the bed liner out, remove the screws on my custom panel and bam, there's the pump.
All that extended crank over a few Plastic Tabs that broke What a Cheap fix little spiral Clamp and it's good to go ton of Tension on them 3 plastic tabs wow good quick repair hopefully it gets replaced good video as always Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
Appreciate the video man! Dealing with the same issue on my mom's rondo and they're wanting a ton of money to replace it but after this I'm super confident I can do it myself
Out of curiosity, I just checked the pictures on RockAuto. Suspiciously, none of the pics show the angle to see that hose connection on the aftermarket parts...I call shenanigans! Plus, its fixed....nice!
Thank you Eric O. I had a K car and when it warmed up would be perfect but on short hops e.g. 5 minutes it would only crank no start. Determined that the fuel would / could not shut off just keep dumping fuel and would flood out the engine. Corrected by disconnecting the electrical connection at the TB and crank till started of course now no fuel. Reconnect and restart and off you go till next time. B4 OBD2 but you could read the 22 and 55 codes. Don't miss those days in the middle of winter. Note, it was only a winter beater.
Thanks Eric, good segment I have been so pleased with my 08 Kia Rondo 2.7L V6 that I bought another used and just bought a parts one to fix the other two. The one I bought used is starting to have an extended crank so will check out the filter first as they can be finicky. Good call on the connector, I now see the after market ones have a direct hose rather then a connector to bypass that problem. Mechanic once told me to also keep tank at least half full so fuel pump is always covered and cool. Also use premium so ethanol doesn't do dirty deeds to the rubber and such. Love your channel, always enjoyable and educational. ⛽
You enjoy your movie with the family and Make sure your there at 7:18 Eric O Before Mrs O Cracks the whip again Good video as always Eric @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
I believe the Kia Rondo had a TSB for fuel pump problems on the 08-10 but have seen a lot of people saying it started in the 07 models for this same issue you have here, poor connection design and have a repair kit for them. probably a fancy aircraft quality stainless steel worm drive hose clamp. Which Dr. O has figured out on his own. :)
Dont devalue yourself Eric - ' If I can do it, you can do it. ' The fact is that most people can't do it - at least efficiently without changing many parts in the process. A good mechanic is worth their weight in gold considering how many hacks exist out there. Down here in Australia they're a rare commodity with those mechanics working for the stealerships being amongst the worst.
Great video Eric, it was nice meeting you at the shop. Thanks for taking a minute out of your busy day to chat. I will have to stop down again sometime before the holidays and we can chat longer. On my way back to buffalo I drove by your brothers truck shop. He looked busy. Well thanks again for everything you do. Talk to ya later.
THAT LITTLE HOSE CLAMP WORKED OK, HOPE THE WEEKEND PROVED IT. I BUMPED INTO JOHN O TODAY AT ARBY'S AND HE SAID THAT THERE ARE A BUNCH OF O'S IN THE CHICAGO AREA AND HE DOESN'T THINK YOU ARE A RELATIVE OF HIS. I TOLD HIM TO WATCH YOUR CHANNEL ON YT :-)
If you were only intending to use the NAPA Pulley holder tool for this pump repair - you cound cut off the ends of the jaws with a wheel, change the pins to slightly longer, and shorten the longer handle with a cut off tool and reinstall the plastic handle - but I use mine for other fan clutch removal projects and didnt feel like burning the $26 to make a one use tool
Dejavu for me only difference is that straw that is attached to the plastic piece backed it's way off. I had to fix it in the dark on the side of the road in the South where all you hear is the crickets chirping and the deer glaring at you 😎 Luckily it was a 2000 Impala with a Fuel Pump sevice hatch!
What he should have done was cut strips of metal off another hose clamp with tin snips. Make them as wide as the retaining tabs on the pump body. Bend them 90 degrees at the ends so that they can go from the pump body tabs to the top of the hose connector. Install them and put a hose clamp over the whole thing. Boom! Better than factory repair.
Nice little fix and I seriously doubt the used car guy does anything more. It will hold and I guess you could rough up the plastic a bit with emery cloth to ensure it grabs. What you did is probably better than factory.
Nice review. This is exactly why plastic designs need to have better quality built into them and they really should have a "rebuild" kit or an assortment of parts to replace those critical areas that will most likely fail. You wouldn't see this on an old GM gen 1 small block fuel pump but if it did fail, it would only cost $20 for the part while these pumps are well into the $100 and up range. Plastic's in ethanol fuel tanks/systems simply can't deal with the toxic fuel plus the age factors that also take tolls on plastics. There is a place for plastic and there are places it shouldn't be. The hose clamp is a great temporary idea, I like it. I say temporary because it's likely that the nut/sleeve will eventually crack again.
nice job Mr O. its obvious the deeper will ship it out the way it is they will surprise me if they give you the green light for this job I'll watch this space good call.
Even if not stainless steel that hose clamp will last longer than the car. It's a fix, and compared to the brittle plastic tabs designed to retain that fuel pump hose it is a huge improvement over the original.
Never heard of that model either! Big fail for Kia on that lock ring - what a joke that was! I'd have been cursing up a storm there, lol. Imagine a world where they made parts like that out of METAL! What a concept! I didn't skip ahead, btw - I stuck it out through every second. :D
it sucks you are not nowhere close to where i live. ( i'm in Canada ). I don't know anyone i would bring my car fully confident i wouldn't get ripped off. I'm glad you share the knowledge and wisdom with us. I just realized today i was not subscribed lol. Been watching your video for a while though.
As long as the tabs match the slots, the clamp should still hold the fitting in. My 2001 Elantra would have almost the same symptoms (Slower more consistent leak down), long crank in the morning and drive fine all day then would crank normal after work. The check valve was getting gummed up so I added Chevron Techron injector cleaner and it cleared up in a couple of days! I started doing it 5 or 6 years ago about once a year and no problems since.
Just thinking, 2 plastic tie wraps would do the same job, however the clamp won't come loose and better than the original. Vanessa has a good time keeping schedule going there and anyway, dinner is aready.
Had the same symptoms with my '03 Kia Rio. Replaced the pump, made no difference. Replaced the fuel injectors, made no difference. Finally I just decided to live with the extended cranking time and then one day she just stopped doing it and starts normal now. No idea what the issue was or if it will return. I replace the fuel filter every 30k so I know that a clogged filter wasn't the issue.
who makes your "Launch" scanner? you didnt introduce us :-p good eye there Eric and a good fix i think. you replaced plastic with metal and saved the customer money. and we learned something about what might cause a extended crank like that.
UPDATE: The real underlying issue with the cheap 3 pronged connector is actually the plastic "S" hose that connects from the fuel pump outlet. It distorts, bends sideways, and then breaks the three microscopic clips that hold the connector to the fuel pump. And has no strain relief to stop that from happening. So...while the clamp may provide temporary relief - the constant distortion of the plastic outlet tube will probably force the connector askew again...And so another recommended patch I did on my Rondo sounds hokey but seems to add additional strength....is to use a longish black tie wrap and catch both sides of the "S" tube and squeeze it ever so slightly back into it's desired true "S" shape. Then using qrt 4 small black tie wraps - criss cross those on each attachement to keep the long tie wrap fastened. This seemed to add the right tension and position to the connector. Then of course - a stainless steel band clamp. The band clamp is ued is .875 I.D. Stainlesss steel band / with a regular steel screw. From Gates/ Napa and used in fuel pump assemblies everywhere. !/4 drive to the band screw. Using a socket wrench - just a small touch of torque and well positioned over the three clip points. Seems to work like a charm. Compared to buying the new OEM fuel pupm assembly for $400 + that has the same design. A real solution is for a repair kit where the plastic outlet S tube is sufficiently pliable to not strain the connector. But not available.
Brilliant vid, must be one of a very few I've watched from beginning to end, no nonsense, straight talking dude, not full of his own BS. What about an update come Monday morning, did it start ? ps I'd leave it like that too, looks like its fixed

You win the internet for the day... 😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Cool fix with the 20 cent hose clamp. That pump looks like an engineered failure point. Gotta keep the KIA parts dept. busy!
Nothing wrong with that fix, better than new! :-) Yes, I have heard of Kia Rondo - we have them here in Aus, classed as a mini people mover.
The Rondo is a Canadian model!
@@darrellward7483
Evidently, Aussie also. 😏
I have an extended crank too, happens every morning before I start 😄 Good video EricO
I have an extended crank... was blessed at birth
No skipping forward here sat through every frame
Proud of u Eric O
This is what we call FIX.
Not a part replacement .
I'm impressed with your priorities go home and watch that movie.... you're a good man Charlie Brown!
Didn't seem like a priority. If it was he would have been there by seven like he promised. Probably not in a hurry to go home and watch another one of those kid movies.

When you crash a Kia Rondo it becomes a Kia Bondo.
lol omg i literally laughed loud as hell
With the way they put the fuel pumps together it might become a Kia Bombo
OMG! That's funny dude. I'm at an airport and people are wondering why I'm laughing out loud.
If you live in it, it's a Kia Condo.
If it's on Babylon 5, it's a Kia Londo.
If you give it to your oldest male child, it's a Kia Sondo.

My '93 Volvo 940 has the same thing, right in the trunk. Four 10mm hex bolts and she's right there. My '07 Silverado ... not so much ...
My 98 Ford F150 has an access panel for the fuel pump.............. Oh wait, that's because I put one there lol. It makes life so much easier now to just pull the bed liner out, remove the screws on my custom panel and bam, there's the pump.
Day off, coffee and Eric, gonna be a good day
All that extended crank over a few Plastic Tabs that broke What a Cheap fix little spiral Clamp and it's good to go ton of Tension on them 3 plastic tabs wow good quick repair hopefully it gets replaced good video as always Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
I didn't skip ahead... I like to watch it all. Never know what I may miss. Lol
Eric, I would watch you just put in bolts or patch wires, it is not boring to me, thanks for the videos, love them all.
That is a permanent fix for me. Fuel pump is good so drive away. Great video.
thank you friends for take a time for make this video. you help me good bless you!!
My 2009 Kia Borrego is having the same issue. Guess it's time to see if access is as easy as on that Rondo! Thanks for the great video!
Jeff Winter I bought my 07 new and have loved it, also thinking about buying another lower mile one. Love the cargo space and visibility.
You enjoy your movie with the family and Make sure your there at 7:18 Eric O Before Mrs O Cracks the whip again Good video as always Eric @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC
love your channel E-Man! Just saw this vid and I would ABSOLUTELY leave that repair in place! Totally FACTREEEeeee!
This was exactly the problem with my Kia rondo 08. Mine was cracked too. .79 cent clamp fixed the problem!
Eric O. is AWESOME!
I would market it as new and improved better than oem design! I'm sure everyone that would look at it, would agree! Good job!
Much much stronger than the factory design for sure!
I know it's a bit late but Hyundai/Kia do make a service repair kit for that, comes with a new filter also.
Let me guess, it's a hose clamp?
@@ichoozjc no, is basically the whole plastic assembly minus the pump, think it runs about $100
@@charleswp71 darn
yep...the boss called and you end the video and leave, you are a smart man, when the boss calls, you stop.
Same fix as the older Jeep Cherokee, nice diagnostic
Had a landlord named 'Rondo" once. He was missing a few hose clamps too.
No skipping ahead here.
you and mrs O are so funny. great video!
nice job Mr O. its obvious the deeper will ship it out the way it is they will surprise me if they give you the green light for this job I'll watch this space good call.
Great video and even better shirt Eric! :) ~Mike
That's a fix! No question.
Definitely a used car dealer good enough fix!
Even if not stainless steel that hose clamp will last longer than the car. It's a fix, and compared to the brittle plastic tabs designed to retain that fuel pump hose it is a huge improvement over the original.
Gotta love the age of plastic, can't wait till our motors are all 100% plastic like those pull back and go cars I used to play with as a kid.
Never heard of that model either!
Big fail for Kia on that lock ring - what a joke that was! I'd have been cursing up a storm there, lol.
Imagine a world where they made parts like that out of METAL! What a concept!
I didn't skip ahead, btw - I stuck it out through every second. :D
lol * let me get a rag before she squirts *

Made me wonder what channel I was on!

Nice work Mr. O !!!!
it sucks you are not nowhere close to where i live. ( i'm in Canada ). I don't know anyone i would bring my car fully confident i wouldn't get ripped off. I'm glad you share the knowledge and wisdom with us. I just realized today i was not subscribed lol. Been watching your video for a while though.
lol, as soon as you showed the time on the obd diag tool i looked at my time and it was 7:00pm too.
👻
I replace the fuel filter every 30k so I know that a clogged filter wasn't the issue.
very clever to fit a clamp i wonder what the replacement cost would have been for the pump, eric o genius
Nice evidence based drivers seat diagnosis sir! Thanks!
I never skip ahead. I wait for you're comments.
Nice one Mr O, that’s a considered and effective repair!
That’s so funny yes hard to find these😮
Thank you
who makes your "Launch" scanner? you didnt introduce us :-p
good eye there Eric and a good fix i think. you replaced plastic with metal and saved the customer money. and we learned something about what might cause a extended crank like that.
You are correct, best repair for customer is new pump
Not when you see the prices..300-$400 depending
Don't lie, when you said you feel like a caveman, you ment you feel like Timmy 😂😂😂 another awesome video Dr O!
Kind of the same thing right haha
Nice fix! Ship it! Lol it will never come back! Get home, our your boss will fire you! Nice video!
NEW KYU LUR ? Eric Eric Eric :-) Keep up the great work
Boda bing boda bang boda boom....ship it... awesome Eric
That's a fix right there :)
Bet the car salesman doesn't fit a new pump
Obviously not. His a salesman, he wants to make a quick buck. Putting in new parts doesn't make a quick buck, sadly.
Fixed if you ask me!
One Auto, absolutely. Will probably outlast the vehicle. Ide leave it if the clamp is stainless.
8ile I wouldn't even tell the prick what I did, I would just say it needs a new fuel pump.
Eric nice find! You the man
Another great vid Eric! Just for the record, I didn't skip ahead... lol
Brilliant vid, must be one of a very few I've watched from beginning to end, no nonsense, straight talking dude, not full of his own BS. What about an update come Monday morning, did it start ?
ps I'd leave it like that too, looks like its fixed
