  • My first RUclips video of 2023. This is a tour of the Galleria Mall in White Plains, NY. This mall opened in 1980 and became the premiere shopping location in Downtown White Plains. In 1981, a year after its opening, its two major anchors, JCPenney and Abraham & Straus, opened and joined the mall.
In the 1990’s, the mall underwent a renovation, undoing many original elements, although the glass elevator remained relatively untouched. A cinema in the mall had also closed down.
In 1995, the Abraham & Straus was converted into Stern’s, and in July 2001, it was replaced with Macy’s.
In April 2001, the JCPenney store closed down and remained vacant until September 2003 and was replaced with Sears.
In 2013, two junior anchor stores, Forever 21 and H&M, moved into the Galleria Mall.
In 2018, the glass elevator in the center court was taken out of service and has remained inoperable since.
In January 2021, the Sears store was closed down. Two months later in March 2021, the Macy’s store also closed down, leaving the mall without any major anchors.
In early 2023, the junior anchors Forever 21 and H&M were closed down, and now all the anchors of the mall are permanently gone.
The mall closed down on March 31, 2023 and will be replaced with mixed-used space, after 43 years of operation. The mall will probably be demolished, and the mixed-use space will have residental space and amenity-based retail.
As you can see in this video, there are a lot of spots that have become vacant, turning this mall into a dead mall.
I cut off a part at 8:53 in this video in which a security guard suspiciously said “You taking pictures?”. I could have spoken to the guard about my photography, but I ignored him and continued on with the tour so I could get the whole mall in this video.
Also at the end of this video, I show you the site where the White Plains Mall had been demolished. It is to be replaced with a Hamilton Green residental space. I filmed a video of the dead mall last year, which you can watch by clicking on the following link: • Dead Mall Tour: White ...
I hope you enjoy this video tour of the Galleria Mall. RIP Galleria at White Plains. (1980-2023)

We still have other malls in the city such as City Center, The Westchester and The Source.

this hurt my soul watching it. i grew up in the Waldenbooks in the first floor, it's part of where my love of books came from. I got my first CD at the radioshack or whatever music store was there in 1998. the Galleria was a huge part of my childhood and i shall miss it dearly. maybe i'll go on its last day...

I used to come here a lot when I was growing up in the '80s and '90s (I wanted to record, but a security guard threatened to kick me out if I recorded again). This mall was very packed back in those days, and it continued strong in the '00s. I only visited there 2 days ago, and many stores that were open when you filmed this are now shut down, there's only H&M, Claires, and that luggage store at 3:39 that were still open. Forever 21 moved to The Westchester which is like only 5-8 minutes away (though really expensive that place lol).
It's really sad for me as this was my childhood mall, but I agree with the city that it's time for it to close for good. Hopefully, they'll bring something nice to the city.

I feel the same way about the Stamford mall here in CT. Sooo many childhood memories. When I get a chance I have to go there and film it like this video.

    • @johnoconnor4019
      @johnoconnor4019  Год назад +1

@@johnbattle7518 I bet the stylization of the Stamford Mall is kinda similar to the Galleria at White Plains. They’re both 2-3 floors with a smaller lower level, they’re both from the 1980s and they both have a growing number of vacancies. The Saks 5th Avenue store in the Stamford Mall has closed down and it could be the same thing for that mall’s Macy’s whitin the next few years or so.
Another thing, both of those malls have a food court level that is bigger than the bottom level but not as big as the other two floors. However, Galleria has the food court on its second level (the garden level) and Stamford Mall has its food court on the top level.
Another difference is that in Stamford Mall, the parking levels are below and above the mall, like a parking/retail sandwich. Galleria Mall has the parking garages standing beside the mall.

@@johnoconnor4019 I think if they made malls have more experiences as oppose to.just shopping they could probably keep them open. Dodge ball, laser tag, air soft, arcades etc etc etc. Sort of an in doors hang out fun zone. What do you think?

Imagine getting bent out of shape over someone taking a video of empty spaces 🤦🏻‍♀
Sad to see what the Galleria has become and that it is now on its final days. Another integral piece of my childhood is gone forever. Truly heartbreaking.
Salon Belleza is the only store that has been in business at the Galleria pretty much since it opened. It used to be located, if I recall, on the second floor before moving down to the food court many years ago. I am from the generation that went to the movie theater below the food court and ate a burger at Mr. Greenjeans.
I live in Georgia now and watching your video made me think that I could just hop on the 13 bus and head to White Plains to see what's popping over at H&M before realizing I don't live in New York anymore. RIP Galleria 💔

White Plains already lost the Palisades Center Mall and now the White Plains mall. The Galleria is the 3rd mall in White Plains schedule for demolition. I don't see the Westchester lasting much longer. The City Center is the only mall that's still seems successful. I think the key is to have popular restaurants and grocery stores as your anchor. It used to be movie theatres and deparment stores that were the anchors, but the internet did away with that.

    • @johnoconnor4019

Do you mean the Westchester Pavillion, not the Palisades Center?
The 1st mall in White Plains that was demolished was actually called the Westchester Pavillion.
The Palisades Center is in West Nyack.

Outdoor malls don'tt seem to have the same problems the indoor malls do. I think it' becausee the outdoor malls typically don't charge for parking.
They should just turn all these failing malls into micro apartments, with food courts, gyms, entertainment centers and parks.

    • @johnoconnor4019
