- While travelling through the Lake District you may suddenly come across a field full of cars, with men and women standing with binoculars in hand, a line of people will be shouting and cheering, calling out names and blowing whistles. You may wonder what you have stumbled upon and then you realise that this is Hound Trailing - one of Cumbria’s oldest and most popular sports.

Found this when thinking of my late father, Norman from Flookburgh, who trialled hounds in the 70,80 & 90s As kids we were taken to many trails, shows and shepherds meets as well as plenty of time looking for lost hounds. Great video....sorry to see that numbers of hounds in the trails has decreased, I remember a lot more . I have tried to explain trialling to many uninitiated people but the madness of letting packs of dogs loose in sheep country in a national park for them to follow a aniaseed scent trail never seems to come as a sensible coherent thing to do for sport.
How do we turn this into a Netflix documentary? I think the history, community and of course all the wonderful trailhounds would make fascinating TV!
Fantastic video... was at the Rydal Show today and it brought back so many memories of my dad. He was a local lad who moved to Scotland but kept his hand in with the hound trailing. I used to help him with puppy training, or laying the occasional trail for his running hounds. Great times 😃
