Series like these are far more interesting to me than seeing a bunch of vehicles & equipment that I can't afford. Overlanding on a budget is far more realistic in the current economical climate
Good for you, Andrew. This is more like it, at least for me.
Yeah, me too
and another me too!
Andrew, I have to say, 246,000 of your subscribers probably feel more represented and see this budget series as a step in the right direction. I love it, as it seems more in line of which most of us can actually afford someday. Great move!
x-trail... really, really a good buy for beginners. Perfect for using as a daily driver too. I believe this is one of the most practical and useful series you've produced, audience-wise. Its not a dream machine build, its something everyone can do. Some can even start working on the vehicle they already have.
That is my case in fact! Just waiting to see all the parts to take the final decisions
@vectra548 I had to smile when you said we don't do overland in the UK this country is so small it is hard to find anywhere that you can go off road with ought having to pay the farmer to use his field.
love it mate more people should do budget builds as there is probably more people wanting to travel on a budget then those that can simply afford it
Awesome! Thank you for a "back to basic" camping vehicle.
I 100% agree with you. Be careful when buying a vehicle someone else already built. You never know what you are going to end up with.
Finally a video for us who use the same car to go to work and travel on the weekend. Thank you
As a Persian, I must protest this Peruvian rug. I believe, in my heart, you made an inferior decision 🤣
Remember....they're on a budget, Persian rug and budget do not mix ;)
🤣
I like to see people nut the thing out for themselves. I have rarely in 66 years engaged a professional but have had a very busy and satisfying time working life out for myself. Encourage young people to think for themselves! So you are now getting more of my attention. Young people need encouragement. Cheers.
Loving this build. Not everyone can afford LC , so these vehicles are budget and many of your viewers will relate to them. ThankYou sir 👍🏻
Excellent idea to bring it to that level , too . we all had to begin on day , and most of us our first overlanding was a low budget one , Bravo , and thank you .
I agree with others, content like this is far more interesting and the running time is manageable with a busy life.
X trail is good, but I will think you overlooked the absolute best one...Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.4. Its permanent 4wd, and has a low range transfer case. I also believe-to go overlanding on a low budget with a fridge and drawers with chairs etc...RV3 OZ tent that they can store on normal roof bars is the answer. An suv is not ideal to sleep in for two
Double the Cost to buy a Suzuki with Same Kilometres, they will probably do the complete Build for the cost of buy the Suzuki Standard also the X Trail is slight wider and has rpughly an extra 130kgs Pay Load, 550kgs to the Zooks 420 odd, they wont be planning on doing 4wding, just normally Touring most likely and 4H is all thats needed, 4low is for proper 4wding, and they are doing it on a Budget, roof top tent even a Kings will cost a good $800. Ill bet they will do the complete build for less then a Suzukis $14000 price tag on Car sales
@@J-P88 so we recently just sold our 2004 grand vitara v6 with 97kms full and great service history for $4500 and honestly for a budget build they are perfect. we upgraded for just an off road not a daily. to a Tj wrangler :) with a roof top tent. winch etc for under $10.000
I own a gv
@@Griddens wow thats a bargain, ive looked on Car Sales and GV with 160k on the clock around 2007-2010 are selling for well over 10k and and regularly seeing for 14k
You are right on every mechanical points BUT the GV cargo is miserable compared to any other 5-doors 4WD SUV
YES! Cheap for the begginer overlander who doesn't want to dump a truckload of money on a rig!
THIS RIGHT HERE is what helps people get into overlanding and keeps them enjoying it. It's not about the gear, it's about the trip, the places and how you enjoy them.
And they can always move on to invest some more on a better rig/gear.
Great idea for a new build, i bet a LOT of guys are really looking forward to this!
Been waiting for this for a long time. Yes the big builds are fun but they are just way too far out of most people's budget. I'm betting this will be VERY popular.
Hello, here are a few tips for Kate:
-coffee machine: Staresso hiking coffee machine
- PeruSian rug: take a Rellow one, they’re the best color.
Regarding the fridge, I’m surprised Andrew is stirring you towards all this gear. If it’s for a ‘backpacker/weekend/short trips’ budget overlander thing, you don’t need it? Chances are you’ll always stay close to shops and not spend more than 5 days away from one so a simple coolbox or electric one that runs during the day will be sufficient. Andrew, remember what you said in one of your videos: always ask the bikers for advice as they don’t have any space.
I’ve been around the world with my motorcycle including Australia with 80L of volume/space and had all tent/camping/cooking /coffee machine gear, plus tools/spare parts, electronics, clothes... the whole lot! It’s good to see you guys going in Andrew’s steps but remember : in the 70s in Africa, all he had was a simple box at the back and Gwynn at the front. And he survived ! Happy travels!
I have the same xtrail t30. I live in Sydney. Went to uluru , then uluru to warracurna roadhouse in WA via the great central road and come back, 3 weeks ago went to birdsville to see the big red, went to fraser island twice with the same vehicle as well as dairy driving. Its a very capable suv. Lone my car . Thanks Andrew
Impressive 👍
Very impressive! What mods do you have on it?
@@yeahno307 mods are very basic. 30mm lift and all terrain tyre ( 225 / 70/ r16 ). Thanks
A good reminder for people that basic is good and still works, I see far to many people get caught in the trap of spending way to much money to create Instagram worthy interiors. I find the people that get the most use out of things, and have the most fun, have the most simple and cheap builds.
This video is amazing as I have been watching for years and would love to start overlanding and explore more. Thank you for showing so much and doing a build can’t wait to see 😁
Andrew, with your knowledge and experience, your helping people take modestly costing vehicles out on adventures. This is what will bring overlanding to the masses. And surely that’s worth more than any big project 🤙🏼
This is going to be a great series. Much needed for most of us. Of course we want your big builds but money is always the issue.
YOU RAN OVER MY PUPPY!!!
Seriously though, this is an under-addressed topic and one I love. I'll definitely watch it all
There's a work table in that storage system if you were to cut the drawer down 20mm shorter of the top and put a piece of ply on top half the length of the drawer with sides that just over hang the sides of the drawer you can pull the drawer out with a top/work table on it then slide the top back in if needing access to drawer ,works a treat and gives you a coffee prep space .
Jack Absylum , Malcolm Douglas & Leyland brothers..
People need to watch those videos..
Jack Absolom drove into the outback in a Sigma Wagon !!
@@australiantruckspotting8883 and the Leyland brothers were more comedy than informative, I recall the episode when they broke a crown wheel but "It's okay, Mal is casting a new one in the sand" My father fell off the lounge in hysterics, he was a draughtsman at an aluminium smelter.
Don't forget the Bush Tucker Man Les Hiddins 👍
@@SpectreOZ and Alby mangles
@@Hazardbone Oh most certainly 👍
Thank you so much Andrew - this video was for me.
I liked the way you explained how to make choices when buying a cheap 4X4.
Now, I know what to think and prioritize.
Make these kinds of videos - they are at our level budget wise.
This is a nice video for young people who want to start to explore our 🌎. Thank you .
I bet Cameron played a lot of Tetris when he was a kid. Great use of space in the back of the X-Trail.
This series is very valuable to me Andrew, thank you all for sharing the journey!
I appreciate this channel for it's enthusiasm and dedication to over landing, both in heritage and in modern consideration. Thank you for the work you have done preparing these videos and offerings excellent perspective.
That's why I purchased my 80 series.
Completely stock standard, 95 gxl, 1hdft engine. One owner, a retired pilot who ran his own small airline and maintained his vehicle like his aeroplanes. Every receipt since the bill of sale kept in a folder. 180,000km on the odometer. A bit of a unicorn. I paid $20,000 (Australia) in 2016.
Love the work Andrew.
I've passed this on to a young backpacker lady I towed (I'm a tow truck driver) who was planning on an Xtrail for touring Australia.
This is the information that gets people thinking about what they can do them selves. Great video, can't wait for the next one.
Lovely back to basics overlanding😉👍🏻
Great idea to do a budget build, captures the essence of going off-road and shows it can be an affordable activity for all. Well done.
As an avid watcher and subscriber to your channel Andrew, I will say I haven't been this excited and stoked on the content from your channel in ages, so here's a massive thumbs up for doing this budget build and getting all of us subscribers itching for the next episode. Loving it...
I enjoyed this video a lot, realistic (at least for me, because is affordable) and points a start for beginners.. thank you! I can wait the next chapter.
Proud to be a Patreon, Andrew. I love your family dynamics. You all obviously love one another!
Great start to what potentially is an excellent series to follow for all of us looking to spend more time outdoors. Thanks, Andrew!
I'm excited to see this series!
Love how your son in law built that very useful draw system himself, Andrew. Loving it !!!
It's fine to make your own drawer systems, but the moment you're thinking about bolting a fridge on top of it you'll need to do more than just screw the ply lid on top of the box because in case of an accident or rollover it could very well tear the lid right off the box. Aluminum angle around the edges screwed through the top and sides and reinforcement plates through where the fridge is bolted is the go.
So excited for this series!!
"it's not about money, it's about what your getting for your money" totally agree, look for the extras!!! they all add up, great vid for the common 4x4 people
perfect, Andrew. Looking forward to this one!
Really enjoyed that, much more relevant for us road trippers 👍🏼🇿🇦
Great video ASPW. Really enjoyed the different approach to getting out there and feeling the freedom and adventure!
Thank you Andrew, so long overdue. Finally something I will be really looking forward to watch.
Looking forward to more of these series... more realistic for me & many others you’ve inspired over the years
He has the same talking style as david Attenborough very easy to understand and pleasant to listen to
Now THAT'S the series I was waiting for you to do.
T30 X-trails are great fun to drive and tour in, takes a 35mm lift and tows an off road camper with ease. We have owned ours for 7 years without any mechanical issues at all, has never missed a beat. It did 6 weeks touring all over Tasmania pulling an 1050kg loaded camper without complaints, just a great fun under rated vehicle, add in a throttle controller and it makes the ultimate go kart.
Great Video Andrew. Nice to see a budget build. And even nicer to see you passing on your knowledge to the kids. Well done
Great start to a new series!
I'm over 6 feet tall and can sleep like a baby inside my 1st gen 5dr RAV4. I removed the rear seats, and I place an old IKEA futon-chair mattress flat across a couple of plastic storage bins, with the front passenger seat leaned forward. It takes < 5 min to set up; it's much easier than pitching a tent, I'm completely protected from weather, and I can use the heater, A/C, or radio as I please. The big downside is that I need to store a few items (like my cooler) outside the vehicle to make space while I'm sleeping, but this takes only minutes to rearrange.
For a budget build and/or a small vehicle, I'd skip the fixed "storage rack" altogether, and just use plastic bins for more flexibility. Once a rack is installed, there's no way to temporarily recover the space for utility purposes.
What a lovely family. Cheers to you Sir.
Good stuff. I'm someone lucky enough to have a late-1990s GWagen after selling my Defender 110, but everything I do to my vehicles is done on a budget. I always try to keep it simple, cheap, and low weight. No matter what kind of vehicle you have, this is the way to go.
Hi Andrew ! Thanks for doing this. More relatable for most of us avarage aussies
I like this video. Getting back to the roots of overlanding and off roading. Example; what a guy or gal can afford for some weekend trips or a vehicle for initial learning the fieldcraft/tradecraft. Not many if any start with a tricked out landcruiser.
This will be a good series, will be funny though if it ends up more capable than the "Ultimate 70 build" haha :P
I just happen to have an X-Trail sitting in a garage, not driven for 7 years (or more). This is such a good idea. I’d completely forgotten about it (long story).
Finally!!! I love my Honda CR-V which is all over the web rn the X-trail is also very good. This is probably a vid that many people have been wanting you to make. Thank you for sharing this with us....
Brilliant been waiting for something like this. Just a good watch in general to see as I have completely gone over board and extravagant on my build
Thank you! This is very refreshing. The series that first really narrowed my focus onto your channel was the African Expedition in a Stock 4x4. Loved it.
We've just got a 4x4 1998 Nissan Pathfinder. We live close to a volcano so testing its capabilities will be a great adventure. Also, on the note of the Nissan X-trail, we also had one 17 years ago brand new, 2WD. Not bad, but very bumpy.
This is an EXCELLENT idea for a series. Quality work as always!
My favourite RUclips videos are of your Canning Stock Route adventure. Something that has been, since watching it, at the top of my bucket list. Finances dictated that I do a few road trips in a 1990 Mazda 626 since you inspired me, so obviously no off-roading. My wife and I looked on forlornly at Cape Tribulation watching 4x4s cross a steady flowing creek, enough to drown our 626. But we loved what you do but could never afford 50k or more on a proper 4x4. This video was exactly what I needed - thank you. In a couple of years we will get that “cheaper” 4x4 and do the CSR.
This video is why you are one of the top 4x4 gurus. Also one of my absolut favorites. Super informative 👌
Really appreciate this move, Andrew. Directly relevant to my choices.
He’s wearing a SF 49ers hat. I am sold.
Finally! Thank you😊
I have been really looking for to this series!
When we arrived in Australia ten years ago, we got this exact car. We took our first off road (well, rough gravel roads) trips with it and loved the heck out of it. Great choice for those on a budget! So it only gets you to 95% of the stunningly beautiful places, I'll take that.
Cant wait for next episode. 🍻
Great video! More like this please!
Currently doing the same type of thing for my daughter. Mitsubishi Outlander 2007. Same 4WD system as X-Trail. Stock standard without a tow bar and I checked underneath that it never had one. Just a nudge bar which is good for lights and aerial. Good fun going back to basics.
Nice! Liked the back to basics video format!
I just picked up a 2000 Prado (95 series) with 402,000 on the clock! however, it only has highway use (from Canberra to South Coast) and a FULL service history with the one owner. (It belonged to my mates mum) paid 6,000 for it no mods at all with an original prado alloy bull bar. The motor runs like a dream and Im told it was never even put into 4wd. It has two standard tanks with both fuel pumps working and does not leak one bit of oil. Great channel btw sir! new subscriber here :)
Luv it! This is what I did with my 2000 Toyota Hilux. Basic and budget. Not completely done, but getting there🙂following this one.
This is where overlanding begins - it is no matter of budget! Do it. Like!
You should look into the Dometic CD30 Fridge that is about 9inches tall and can build a platform on top
2:15 Oh my god you ran over my puppy lol. Looking forward to this. Cheers Steve
Andrew, great video. I would love to see more series like these
This is brilliant and really inspiring me in regards to my Freelander2.
Good video Andrew, keep stuff like this coming. I think many of you viewers, like me, are weekend warriors at best and still have to use our cars / trucks as daily drivers.
Been looking forward to seeing this one.
Thank you Andrew. We have watched almost all of your videos and from information you have provided we actually started our own budget overland project. Remember the 2005 Grand Cherokee you drove in SA? That turned out as our base and we love it. Thank you for your videos.
Superb content..... this is just what I have been waiting for
Good job
Edit. Good to see you keeping your son in law in check.
This is perfect. Great video. So glad you're doing this. It gives such good ideas on what I can do with my 2012 Tacoma on a budget.
Excellent video love seeing builds that are affordable. 👍
Yes, I'm going to like following this series.
Great video!! Not everyone has the budget but they have the passion!!
Thanks Andrew bought my xtrial 3months ago and wanted to make overlander now I have inspiration 😀
What a treat! I am building a budget build here in Texas at the moment! You were one of my inspirations for getting into Overlanding as its a fairly new concept here in the states. I have a home life but enjoy getting away from it all. This is how I plan to do it. Look forward to more in this series. Cheers!
Just like work expands to fill in allocated time, I found out that space & weight fill in any 4wd. I learnt the hard way. Your video is a great gift to a lot of people.
great to see more budget ideas like well done this is going to help many to get out there on real life expense accounts looking forward to seeing this in action
Fantastic!! Great choice in vehicle and really interesting to hear you talk through the compromises and how various decisions affect other choices.
This is a great start point for a lot of young people. Maybe a few older ones as well. Great video.
AS USUAL ANOTHER KILLER VIDEO!!! KEEP IT UP ANDREW!!! LOVE THE VIDEOS!!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING! 😊 Best wishes ❤ be well sir!!!
