I'm sure you have already done this since the video is a year old, but you can buy a Stevia plant for the herb garden, dry and grind, and you can either make an extract or just use the ground leaves. Fresh leaves are also great for garnish.
The best lemonade I have ever tasted. Natural, no added sugar. juice fresh lemons & fresh (sweet) apples. Most apples will be sweet anyway, but juicing these together, and mixing them to taste, created a sweet lemonade that wasn't overly sour.
I love kale chips. They are so easy and a 1000 times cheaper to make. I mix some almond butter, some organic oil and pink sea salt together, toss it through the kale leaves and dehydrate. Thanks for the videos. 😊
Awesome job on budget busters.Wanda and i do the same things. If people could only get it and not depend on the system and get hooked on junk foods. Thanks girl.
Top that popcorn with brewers yeast! I also like olive oil, rosemary and black pepper. Also fold a paper towel up and stick it in the lid to hold it open a little bit. Allowing the popcorn to vent while popping makes it nice and crunchy.
Canning is by far the best money saving for food storage and portion control for meal prep.... We are just begining that process and already see the benefits!!!! Keep up the good work! Inspiring others to be self sufficient is the American Way of Life!
thanks for the tips. I have not made popcorn that way in a long time. We don't eat much of it any more. I have a couple of boxes for the microwave that have sat in my cubboard for about 6 months untouched.
I'm looking for a canner so I can try canning my own meats. I'm pretty excited about it since I've seen your videos! I hadn't considered it before seeing you do it. Normally my mom and I both use the same canner during the summer, but I'm getting my own now so that we don't have to constantly be swapping it back and forth (even though we just live 1/2 mile from each other).
3 great tips for saving money AND cleaning up your diet. We like to brew our own iced tea~ Arizona brand tea makes a truckload of money, and is loaded with either sugar OR toxic sugar substitutes. There is a product called 'True Lemon' which I've tried and like, it contains Stevia. We grow herbs so we incorporate them into our water. I especially enjoy fennel water. Rosemary, or mint are also refreshing choices. When we want something real sweet, we juice watermelon. Especially if we can find it cheap (I once bought 6 watermelons for $10-)! It took us 2 weeks to drink/eat them all, but they keep well.
stay out of the center aisles (if you can't stay out of the store entirely). produce, dairy & meat are along the edges...just go there or venture deeper only if you're focused on one thing, like coffee...go in carefully...keeping your eye only on the prize & don't let your focus drift. grab the can...you know what it looks like...grab it quick & get outta there.
I just learned to bake bread. The first couple times didn't come out real well but it was still edible. A loaf of bread is over $3.00 and I am single and through some of it away. Also your video on making you pasta from fresh tomatoes kept me fed for pennies a day when I had my landscape biz.
Wheat, beans and venison. Grind wheat and bake your own bread with the flour you made. Hunt deer. It's outstanding meat that can be virtually no cost. Buy pinto beans in bulk. There a tons of meals you can make using beans. Go fishing. Grow your own garden. When I add eggs, potatoes, cheese and onions I've got pretty much all I need.
Well said, there is no reason anyone should ever go hungry in this country....even if they don't hunt, using these principles of buying bulk and preserving can stretch the food dollar to a healthy well fed family !!! Unfortunately I just see a lot of lazy people asking for handouts and living on a processed convenience food diet with no nutritional value :( and another huge factor is all the garbage produced from packaging .......one use/ single serve items should be outlawed !!!
Putting a lid on your popcorn can leave it a little soggy, better to use a mesh screen when popping. Garlic salt, chipotle powder, and a hint of sugar make a tasty bbq flavor for popcorn.
The other day in the store I saw beside the white vinegar a fancy bottle of "cleaning" vinegar for twice as much. Ingredients? White vinegar. I patted myself on the back because I would never fall for that - but then I wondered, What AM I falling for? For instance, I never thought of using my canned meat for sandwiches! I love this kind of video, so informative. Thank you.
Judith Moore there's actually something called "super/cleaning vinegar" that has a higher acidity. regular white vinegar is always 5%, cleaning vinegar is anything higher than that. :) whether or not that's worth spending money on is probably a matter of preference.
I love making popcorn like this. A little thing I do and learned from my mom. She always used bacon grease to pop it in instead of reg. oils Love it. Thanks for the video.
I put the whole lemon in my high powered blender with stevia and water after removing the seeds. I strain out the pulverized rind over a quart jar. I have a full quart of lemonade for the day, and I love to eat the pulverized rind with my kefir (yum)! No waste and much more drink from the lemon.
Better make that an organic lemon. I've seen how spray-crazy the citrus growers are. Anything with a peel that usually gets discarded, will be the most contaminated.
I went healthy six years ago. I do coconut oil and organic/grass-fed butter, spring water and coconut milk, whole fruits and veggies. I eat meat on average 1x per week, and add lots of healthy stuff to my smoothies. My diet has completely changed and so has my health. Oh, and I replaced all toxic cleaners and personal items in my home. I even make my own tooth-powder! And, I just ordered a kraut pounder. Fermenting is next ! Love this life style.
Or put beans on bread. No meat at all. Get down to pennies instead of dollars. Edit: you cannot imagine what body parts the profiteers call fit for human consumption once it's cooked and made unrecognizeable.
what about biogas instead of wood and also what about flat bread for pizza base instead of lots of bread also growing veges in pots even watermelons on line shows how to do it
I live in Canada. Deli meat is sold by 100grams ( 454grams to a pound). Cheapest you get ham is 2.99 a hi Fred grams. Turkey roll? 3.99 a hundred grams. Last Christmas I got a meat slicer. I buy my own meat in bulk and on sale and then cook and slice.it. Black forest ham costs me 64 cents per 100 grams. Real Turkey breast costs me 99 cents a hundred grams.
like the video. I am a 17 year professional chef. I find the best way to bust supermarket prices in thru just a little bit of reading. Where I live(just outside of NYC) there are 6 supermarkets. I go online, look up the sales, then do my shopping. I work out a loop to drive so it is efficient. I wind up saving a ton. On a given week one store may have limes at 50 cents for two. While one of the others have 8 for 1$. Chicken breast may be 3$ a pound at one store and I can get it at another for $1.80 per pound. I can go on about examples . But we know the point. As I say to my friends. The supermarket circulars are the best news in print. P.S. One time I was checking out of a store. Bought chicken, veggies, and potatoes. I had 4 bags of food for about 5$. The guy behind me said. "How did you get all that food for that, Wow". I replied. RIF. Reading Is Fundamental . NEVER SHOP FOR FOOD WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY !!!!!!!!!!!!!! keep up the site !!!
Great tips! We raise our own grass fed beef, but I have a good grocery store tip. When bottom round angus roast goes on sale at around $2.49/lb, ask you store butcher to grind it and return it in the original package for check out. You just bought 90% lean hamburger, ground from ONE cut of beef at $2.49 a pound. I like to use my Food Saver vacuum sealer. I will watch your canning meat video ,as I have the American Pressure canner. Looking forward to that! I also make lemon barley water with honey for the boys when they are haying. And love homemade lemon aid! Your choice of liquids is excellent Jaime. I use Stevia, honey, molasses and maple syrup within reason.. Whole fruits rule!
Fresh mint tea is a favorite around our house. Mint is literally the easiest plant to grow. We have several varieties growing around the base of trees. Make sure to plant mint in pots or in areas you can contain the spread because it's VERY invasive.
I like to use Amish Groceries you can often get meats and cheeses very cheap. I also shop around. Have a buy price for your meats. If you find a sale that has your buy price advertised stock up enough to last to next sale. Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor day probably a good time for ground beef and hot dogs and sausages. Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter good time for hams and turkeys and canned goods potatoes. Take advantage of sales.
My husband and I got married at 20, thus we were low income for a number of years. I just don't buy anything from the middle of the store, and shop only the produce. Back then I would buy all in bulk, separate into dinners and and budget out for at least 2 weeks. Couponed hard af, and we made it. I worked 3 part time jobs, babysat for many families and it actually served as a huge convenience for me to have everything mapped out and set up. My husband was always out at sea or deployed so it was a huge life saver for him to be able to eat dinner at 3am on his own and have left overs planned for lunch. I love prepping and planning and budgeting, its turned into a game in our household.
My dad always made popcorn this way or in our small pressure canner! :-) Question. Do you ever freeze your popcorn? I was taught to freeze it to keep from losing internal moisture, which will cause your kernels to not pop. Also, here in Amish country, one sweet lady gave me her Amish recipe for lemonade. She boiled 4 lemons which helps extract a lot more juice adds her simple syrup and ice. Four lemons make a gallon of lemonade.
Homemade hummus using home canned garbanzos...cumin, lemon juice, olive oil, Bragg's, tahini, tumeric. Blend until smooth...3 minutes...2 c. for ..75 cents!
We buy a fully cooked Smithfield ham butt for around $1.29 / lb,, heat it, slice it thinly and pack it into 8 oz ziploc packages. Those get frozen and used one at a time. The ham bone makes marvelous split pea soup.
My favorite is not using paper towels. We have several old towels, cut up into paper towel sizes, that we use instead. We still use paper towels for super greasy messes ( not a good idea to run very greasy things through the laundry machines) but they are better at cleaning and we uses a 10th the number of paper towels. I got the idea from Guildbrook Farm. :D
We don't fry and we rarely have any greasy foods...bacon being the exception...but you are correct. You do NOT want that in your wash. I made that mistake!
Recently I've cut up old pajamas into paper towel size squares, and even cut smaller size for "family clothes" for the bathroom. Anything to help Earth and my pocket-book. I find ways to save money fun and addictive.
Up here in Atlantic Canada lemons are pricey so when I buy them I try to get as much out of them as possible. 1.Grate the rind and freeze then you can use them to flavor cookies and cakes or seafood when you don’t have lemon. 2. After you grate your peal , and squeezed your juice, use what is left with an orange peal ,apple peal a pinch of clove and cinnamon. Boil in a pot and reduce to a simmer. Makes your house smell wonderful. 3. Compost, enough said.
KweKanata Save the pith and put im jar w white vinegar let sit for few weeks strain and use as lemon scent cleaner. Can also add pune needles. Pine sol !!)
Great ideas ..... I do the lemonade all the time. You can also buy a turkey breast or large of beef and roast it off ... have as a meal and then break it down for sandwiches that week. It's a sad commentary that you have to do a RUclips video to teach folks how to pop their own popcorn at home on the stove. Have we really come to that? That's how we grew up! We use our cast iron dutch oven to pop popcorn ... specifically our vintage No. 10 Griswold with the self-basting lid .... give the popcorn a great taste like movie theatre!
A lot of people think they must use a microwave or a popcorn maker. Not everyone was brought up the same way or has the time to research alternatives. That is why we are here...to help! Thanks for sharing your tips!
Freeze your bread as soon as you buy it. I always do this and it does not ruin the texture of the bread at all. When you thaw it out it stays the same as it was once you froze it.Hope this makes sense.
this one is to save on your poultry feed bill, get whole wheat seed(i get a 50lb bag for 10$) and sprout it! it turns 1 lb of feed into 6 lbs of more nutritional and more digestible food for chickens, ducks and geese and plus my pigs go crazy for it too, also you can do it with black oil sunflower seeds as well as oats ,millet, rye ,barley...ect thx WWW
That's the way we did popcorn when I was younger. Our grandma made us a bag of popcorn as a treat for Halloween. She used an old pot with a lid, some vegetable oil/ crisco, and corn. We rarely had the burnt popcorn you get in those microwave bags. We controlled the amount of salt, butter etc. We used to make kettle corn- using both sugar and salt. We also used cinnamon and sugar also. It's good to be going back to the older ways. The " modern way" of doing things is not always the best.
It amazes me people have to be shown how to make popcorn. :( I keep two unpopped bags in my freezer. They make awesome ice packs. They mold around whatever needs to be iced and stay cold as long as anything else does.
Go to local farms and buy bulk meat. 1/4 cows, whole pigs, chickens and eggs. And then buy a CSA share for vegetables and bread or grow your own. Or both. And avoid the grocery store all together. It is all marketing anyways. It gets to the best of us. Azure for all the other spices and grains we can't buy local.
I also make lot of cucumber water! So simple (and good for you!) I just rinse the cukes - slice them and put in a pitcher of cold water. Store in the fridge a couple hours and enjoy!
Right on! Cooking from scratch is so much more healthier than the processed stuff at the store. I drink teas and make my own fruit and herbal waters. Definitely health savers as money savers. Thank you for sharing the awesomeness:)
most people don't realize that all the juice in the stores are pasteurized and filtered so much that they are no more nutritious than soda by the time you consume it.
I also make a ginger syrup using fresh ginger, water and organic sugar (not too much) - boil for about 10 mins and store. Drunk with fizzy water is just like ginger ale! :)
If your grocery store sells fresh bread everyday (like the one I go to), go in close to closing and bread will most likely be half price, as the bread is no longer 'fresh' the next day, and they need to make some profit from the bread. The bread will still be good (even if organic with no preservatives) for between a couple of days to up to a week 😊
Hey, I left a long note on your blog. Since you are a canner, add the vegetables to the list. We used to freeze all that stuff -- except apple sauce and tomatoes. We made and froze 30 to 40 qts. and generally filled our 23 cf. freezer. As for the popcorn, which I cannot eat (nuts!) for 30+ years we have used an air popper which is really nothing more that a hair dryer. Don't know if they are still available. As for purchasing lunches, you are spot on. As for eating out, most of ours is done to accommodate the needs of the grandchildren we care for. Not a treat as much as a way to meet their crazy schedules. I eat strawberry spread from Costco -- cheap and low in calories. Bread is a different matter. I eat Volkorn Brot which is made from rye flower, rye chop and a little salt. Low calories and NO preservatives. There are a lot of these kinds of read out there, sliced very thin they are also very filling.
I like my cirus drink with half a citrus and ginger thinly sliced. I then add honey or maple syrup and acv top off with water and great sports drink. another great video.
Enjoy you videos. Would like for you to try something on the popcorn. I use just a plain brown lunch bag (old school). You can get 50 bags for about a dollar or less at most dollar stores. 2 to 3 tbsp per bag, fold down top. This is oil free in the bags before popping. Microwave about 2 minutes ( time may vary) Then your toppings. I use a little salt and butter flavor Pam. Very little to no clean up. Enjoy from the bag or pour in to a bowl.
It's going to be very interesting to see how you, Jeremy, and the kids do when you get out of your suburban hell into your dream farm. Your channel is quite the inspiration so far where I catch myself binge watching for hours!
would like to know some of your recipes or how you use your can meats for sandwiches. I have a couple ideas, but I'm really interested in the different ways you use canned meat as deli meat...
We have a playlist on Scratch Cooking that shows some ways we use home canned goods. We will be doing a lot more videos on that in the future as they come up.
I bake my own cookies and cakes from scratch. It's not really that much more work than buying mixes. Homemade tastes a zillion times better and there are no odd chemicals in it.
What a terrific video. We already do 2 and 3 but we are very interested in learning how to can our meat. I have a friend that does it. I am going to watch your video and see what i can learn. We just processed a turkey this morning so it would be great to can it.
The lunch meat one is HUGE!!! It's actually cheaper to go to the local grinder shop. I agree with all of these. I usually only drink beer or water. I only drink soda in a mixed drink. LOL My mom always made popcorn like that when I was a kid. Pre microwave. hahaha Great vid
When I am in a hurry I put about 2 TBS of popcorn in a brown lunch bag - fold it shut (granted it NEVER stays shut) and put it in the microwave on the popcorn setting. Just be sure to listen for the pops to slow down so you don't burn it. It is super plain but while still hot you can spice up
I've started cooking meals from scratch rather than buy premade meals. Also, I try to plan out my meals for the whole week, make a grocery list specific to that meal plan. Shop once that week. Only buy what is on the list. Cuts my grocery bills in half.

:)
I really enjoy your videos

The fibre in fruit reduces the insulin spike ...it's all about keeping insulin and cortisol at a minimum 😊👍
I buy bulk meat and freeze it, I can some of it, but I have a decent size freeze we use. I also always make my popcorn that way!!

I love these kind of videos and the bloopers are hilarious.
I will try having lemonade instead of soda, not only saves some bucks but gives me vitamin c for the day. thanks for your advice
And it is very thirst quenching :0)

A little unsolicited advice... add a small pinch of salt to your lemonade and taste the difference!

Save the pith and put im jar w white vinegar let sit for few weeks strain and use as lemon scent cleaner. Can also add pune needles. Pine sol !!)
Great idea on freezing the lemon zest 😃
I didn't mean to sound snarky ... who knew growing up country poor was setting me up for the future LOL :P
:0)
I bet Lard would be great in that POPCORN!
+Lumnah Acres Or bacon grease 😉
I bet!
whats your dorito popcorn recipe?
Freeze your bread as soon as you buy it. I always do this and it does not ruin the texture of the bread at all. When you thaw it out it stays the same as it was once you froze it.Hope this makes sense.
I freeze loaves of bread too. I just take out a few pieces at a time so it doesn't go to waste.
this one is to save on your poultry feed bill, get whole wheat seed(i get a 50lb bag for 10$) and sprout it! it turns 1 lb of feed into 6 lbs of more nutritional and more digestible food for chickens, ducks and geese and plus my pigs go crazy for it too, also you can do it with black oil sunflower seeds as well as oats ,millet, rye ,barley...ect thx WWW
I always make my own popcorn and since I have a big family I usually pop mine in my large wok.

Excellent suggestion! So much safer and cheaper than using a bag of peas.
Good advice. More people should know this I know my grandkids just like water very little juice or milk
Because I'm GF I have been using your granola recipe, which is amazing. It saves me about $13 a week on buying the udi's brand. Thank you for sharing.
Awesome!!! That was the brand I used to buy as well. $$$ But I found the homemade is 1,000,000,000 times better in taste ;0)
We have 2 or 3 turkeys in the chest freezer....need to can them so we can have some freezer space back. Forgot I could do that.
To save money at the store, I leave the boyfriend at home.
LOLOLOL!
Use an emulsifier like the Ninja
You can make a fruit and veggie smoothie
most people don't realize that all the juice in the stores are pasteurized and filtered so much that they are no more nutritious than soda by the time you consume it.
+Cheryl Taylor - Correct.
Like coffee, it is $7.00 lb for beans that get ground. Agree with idea about canning, but really need pantry to store. But good ideas.
I also make a ginger syrup using fresh ginger, water and organic sugar (not too much) - boil for about 10 mins and store. Drunk with fizzy water is just like ginger ale! :)
Gonna try this. thx
Your tips are so simple! I love to watch your videos to see how you do things!
Exactly. We want to show people that saving money doesn't have to be complicated but it is the little things that add up!
A lot of times the Deli will ask you-" is it ok if it's a little over"? 😩
I'm not joking. So many times I wished that 100% juice was as cheap as soda pop. I love Grape Juice the best.
The Rolls Royce Trent actually it is if wait for sales.
Loved the video! Great alternatives to the Busters you mentioned. I cringe evey time I have bought lunch meat.
Great advice!!! I have not thought of using anything other than canned chicken as a lunch meat!
I like my cirus drink with half a citrus and ginger thinly sliced. I then add honey or maple syrup and acv top off with water and great sports drink. another great video.
Thank you for all you do. You are appreciated.
I've been looking for a good, meat free, chunky spaghetti sauce to can. If you have a recipe I'd love to see that in a future video!
Thanks for sharing!
As bizarre as this sounds lime juice on popcorn is really good! This is the way we've cooked popcorn all my life. Thank you!
We will be doing a lot more videos on that in the future as they come up.
throw the whole or half of lemon in your glass and keep adding water all day for lemon infused water...
That sandwich looked AMAZING!!!!😋We're new to your channel, and thank you for all of your very thoughtful and detailed videos!!
Welcome Lauren...and it was! :0)
Welcome Lauren!! 👍🏻😊
Budget butter mother plucker! 👍😎👀💝 it!
+Kimberly Mayo - Say it 10 times fast! 😂
I love the bloopers in the end, its cute.
+Heartiness Approach - Next Tuesday we do ground sausage. Stay tuned! 😊
Oh cool. I'll be there.
Oh yeah... she used to make iced tea with real teabags too....
When I am in a hurry I put about 2 TBS of popcorn in a brown lunch bag - fold it shut (granted it NEVER stays shut) and put it in the microwave on the popcorn setting. Just be sure to listen for the pops to slow down so you don't burn it. It is super plain but while still hot you can spice up
Jerry; I still do.
I've started cooking meals from scratch rather than buy premade meals. Also, I try to plan out my meals for the whole week, make a grocery list specific to that meal plan. Shop once that week. Only buy what is on the list. Cuts my grocery bills in half.
I find your videos so informative and all around awesome..
