I've a pretty harsh Northumberland winter ahead of me so I'm looking for both warmth/insulation & something that is at least showerproof but not boil-in-the-bag like the Gore ShakeDry jacket. I'm kind of looking towards the Ultimate but wondered what anyone who rides in harsh weather really thinks. Thanks in advance.
The Ultimate is made from Polartec Neoshell which is slightly more water resistant, yet slightly less breathable compared to the Doppio. If you want a warm winter jacket that can deal with the ups and downs of where you live + slightly improved water protection, then the Ultimate is a solid choice
Thanks for the question! Great to hear you're loving the Alpha Flight. No, stick to the same size on the Doppio. The pattern is slightly different to allow for more room.
I prefer the Goretex Infium fabric of the Perfetto Ros jacket over castellis own nanoflex, as its windproof and not sweaty. The doppio jacket still uses it, so why not the flight? It can be used in different thicknesses..
Yes the thickness and stretch is very different. On most of Castelli's jackets where they need/want the stretch and extra breathability they will use Nanoflex instead of Gore Infinium materials. By using the higher stretch fabrics, they've created a jacket that doesn't have to be slightly oversized shape to compensate for lack of stretch. The Alpha Flight fits like a jersey, is 150g lighter than the Doppio and is very breathable.
Love Polartec Alpha, this is perfect choice for the vest material. Certain irony in the Alpha name now being dropped! Not sure about decision not to use GTX Infinium on the lighter jacket, perhaps there will be a bigger gap in warmth between the two compared to the current Alpha and Alpha light.
That is exactly the reason for the change in fabric on the Flight. The previous Alpha Light overlapped temperature wise with the Alpha too much, but also felt like a jacket when wearing. The Alpha Flight feels much lighter (it's 150g lighter), feels more like a jersey then a jacket and performs better at the mid-high end of the temp range.
The temperature range of the previous light was a suggested temperature range of 7 to 15 degrees C, the replacement flight is stated as 6 - 16 deg C. No mention of a suggestion. A degree here or there is quite subjective depending upon air flow and how each retains heat. Secondly I rather see what castelli have done is simply reduced costs on an excellent jacket by changing materials in switching away from Gore-Tex INFINIUM. The real question is: Is the change noticeable in rain or shine?
@@robertkee7534 I understand he cynicism behind switching the fabrics, but it is due to getting a better fit. The Alpha Light was our favourite jacket, however we found it was too similar in performance to the Alpha ROS. The new Flight fits differently and performs better at high temps (agreed on subjectivity of temp ranges). It is still water resistant because it uses Castell's Nano Flex fabrics, but isn't as water resistant as previous. But we don't mind this for the better fit it offers
Hi! Good question. The Perfetto is an incredible jacket, but is a stripped back race piece that is designed to be fit and forget in all weathers for Castelli pro racers. Because of how thin the fabric is, it's really versatile and can be used over a wide temperature range with the swap of a base layer. The Alpha jackets aren't designed for racing, but for Castelli's pro racers to train in. Because of this, they have more features that make them both more practical, but also better for keeping the rider comfortable at the expense of aero. If less water repellency, but better temperature management sounds good to you, there the Alpha Flight/Light would be a good option.
I have used the Perfetto and just by adding either a waterproof light coat or warm gilet plus a vest depending upon temp, has seen rides on one day leaving the coast at 22 deg C to around a comfortable 8 degrees in the mountains. However, on one trip a little higher at 2 deg C with a light gilet I was frozen. If your rides are in the recommended range, of 8 to 16 Deg C, the Prefetto jacket cannot be beaten
I have the alpha Ros 2. Brilliant stuff. Even in -15c. I thought the Ultimate was the replacement last year but now we get the new Doppio as well. I'm getting confused.😊 Very interested in the video to see how they compare.
It boggles me what you call a "winter". By the looks of it it's just autumn. At least in my country, the weather I see in the video is like right now October, november will get colder. And Winter here is a real winter. Try riding in this summer jacket -20 C.
There's always one come UK in January when it's cold wet and windy and you'll be scrambling to get back to your -20c dry cold as fast as you can it's a whole different type of cold.

Thanks for your review. I have the alpha flight Ros and fits great.
Due to the thickness and less stretch on the Doppio should I go up a size?
Thanks!

My guess money W L GORE are the only supplier of infinium it's the best on the market and they know it so it's not cheap.

Alpha Flight/Light vs Perfetto. Which to get?
