  • This was a fantastic discussion on the recently published practice notebooks of Michael Brecker! Rick Margitza, world renowned saxophonist and Brecker transcriber, is joined us from Paris. David Demsey is joined us from the Michael Brecker Collection at William Paterson University with Brecker's original notebooks in hand. We also had Adam Niewood, who worked on Brecker's mouthpieces inluding the one he used on his final recording. Luis Palacios, who completed his dissertation on Brecker's playing and is Director of Instrumental Performance and Jazz Studies at Northwest Nazarene University, and Chuck Sher and Larry Dunlap from the publisher Sher Music Co. are joined the discussion as well. We covered the system that Brecker used to practice the material in his notebooks, originally created by Gary Campbell, how he used that system not only in practice but in his improvisation, and many other important and interesting topics.

My book (1988) "Expansions" (Gary Campbell) is the "routine" as discussed in this video. Goes everywehere.

Lydian Augmented etc. was part the nomenclature used by of George Russel's "Lydian Chromaytic Concept of Tonal Organization" which my 1st teacher David Baker and then Jerry Coker used. Terms like "altered" came later from berklee probably.

Thank you for this panel discussion. How can one be serious about the tenor saxophone w out studying Michael Brecker?? Really appreciated what Rick had to say regarding his experiences, practicing. I have Brecker’s notebooks on my iPad. Very informative! 🙏

Super interesting talk guys, thank you so much for all the effort and dedication in putting this book together! I'm sure this will be on tons of people's stands, it surely will be on mine.
It's as interesting to see what he practiced - the logged lines - as the system he used to practice, like what you all discussed and was neatly explained by Rick. It provides an extra insight into looking at solo transcription of Mike as well.
    Thanks again!

    Killer chat.
Been working on the book the last few weeks and this has really helped me understand some things.
Those points about practicing basics is key. Melodic minor scales in 3rds is an absolute killer... Going through the "hard" keys in particular has already had a big impact on my playing.

    Theory is one thing
How to practice in order to accomplish one thing...is the goal
    M.B is just one style.
Dont practice to sound like mike brecker....practice to accomplish your own goals...
