Make sure you've got the right spare tubes for the wheels you are using. I was at an event where a racer had a tubeless setup fail before the start, his spare tubes had normal valves but he had deep section wheels so they didn't fit. He was running all over the place asking if anyone had a spare they could give him.
For checking my kit, I always lay things out and work from swim to run, and from feet to head, physically touching things and imagining putting them on at the start or in transition.
And it doesn't matter how much I lube, there is always a new unpredictable spot that decides to rub, if it keeps on I'll have to shower in the stuff before I start.

Your friend Ian did a sea swim at the IRONMAN Vichy...? 🤔

Thanks for the correction; the lake is big enough, it can seem like a sea swim!

Do you guys go back and pickup the rubber bands that break off your bikes when you take off? Horrendous for the environment

Picked them up, was able to tie a knot in them, and will use them again for next time. 🙌

Excellent tips. Thank you. My only other suggestions are to join a local triathlon club. Even if you cannot train with them, on race day the club may have a tent where other members meet. You can meet there, and people will help each other with simple things like putting on the wetsuit or race numbering etc. Many will have spares just in case you forgot something. It can alleviate some stress on race day. Some may also be experts of the race location and provide tips for getting in and out of transition or to the start line. Finally, I always take my own roll of toilet paper just in case the very busy toilets run out just as I am ready to go.
