I think the gaps in the road are actually realistic. Bridges have expansion joints that allow the bridge to change size at different temperatures without breaking.
Yes, also when I saw the light grey with the Dark on the road bridge. I'm like oh looks like my city. Where road repairs never match the road. Also several of my cities bridges. Have squares cut into them, so they can fix the bridge. Then it's filled in. So it looks normal to me.
a huge benefit to raising the gradient of the train track would be the ability to implement pedestrian walkways underneath the railway, this would make the boardwalk less of a dead-end and more of a scenic walkway towards the beach from downtown. You could even add some vendors, benches and other features to that green strip between the railway and the boardwalk, to make the boardwalk look more alive.
A lot of canals do have walkways along them. Depends on their original purpose, but if they were working canals, the boats or barges were pulled by horses.
@@radbricks8298 it's high enough for a minifig to fit underneath it already I think. If not he could lower the floor into the mils plate through the tunnel
Here is the issue with that pedestrian bridge. On a bridge like that you cannot have a slope greater than 2% -OSHA standards, because the ADA LEGOS (handicap or most people for that matter) can not use it. That is why it looks odd. That bridge would create a great deal of faceplants. Also train tracks rarely go past 2% and will only do so if the distance is greater than 100 feet. Honestly that is why the slopes look condensed, aggressive and forced. I think if you change it, it would not look as odd. Awesome progress though.
I am impressed with your ability to quickly change and modify sections multiple times. But the final results are amazing. The tiny details bring so much of the story to life.
Looks great! Remember nothing is ever finished. Get it where you are happy and then you can always come back 6 months or a year later and upgrade. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good to keep your sanity and work on what excites you 👊
I love that you extended the bridge! Take everything day by day and don’t overrush it! :) the canal will be an amazing addition to the lego city and it’s going to look good with the venetian houses!
I liked them before, but this does look better. The road bridge looks amazing. Good call on the snot bricks for the pedestrian bridge and the wedges for the cars. Time to move on to something else and let the ideas cook for this area. I know that you like things symmetrical and that makes it tricky, but the more I look at this the more I think the rail line should be raised up a titch. Train tracks are themselves human added features and we're always changing the terrain to build the tracks. A little bit of landscaping will probably look good.
Nice work on extending the incline and reducing the grade of the bridge. That list of parts needed somehow keeps growing even after trips to the PAB wall.
You say that you dont like the idea of a natural hill leading up to the man made bridge but in reality, 100s of tons of soil and dirt are moved around all the time to make slopes like that. Especially for train lines and highways. Those highway ramps you drive on aren't on natural hills that perfectly grade the intercgange those are man made hills. So it wouldn't be weird at all to have the train start going up further back.
Have you thought about elevating the land in the city section by a Brick or two so that the water is further below the city level? it would make bridges over the water easier to make. This might make for a more dynamic topography in the city and then your train transitions could be spread out over a larger portion of the city.
As you start to think about the canal, one of the towns near me does a boat parade/float/display at Christmas with different themed boats in their canal, you could do something seasonally if you wanted.
[ 9:39 ] How about replacing the topmost 16x16 road plate, along with the two adjoining 8x16 plates, with two differently-angled 16x16 road plates, instead, thus giving the road profile a slightly more rounded look ( made up of 4 distinct planes, as opposed to the current 3-road planes trapezoid )? This might look a bit nicer, and would reduce the gaps on either side of the current topmost 16x16 road plate, as well.
This might seem like only a minor change compared to what you did in the last video, but I feel it's very significant. The canal does need to be that wide and the road plate seems a lot more natural now. Keep up the great work!
Looks great, could you shorten the flat section in the middle of the rail bridge like you have on the road bridge, would help slightly with the incline and hopefully you would only need to modify the supports for the track, not the bridge itself.
Those bridges are definitely way better! I would mess with the train track. Great work. Little by little but take your time with it. It doesn't has to be finished in a few weeks.
Hey there. I never comment on RUclips but have been watching these updates and thought I’d drop a line here. Very cool project and hope it goes great! So, I’m in construction and have a decent eye for design. I’ve heard you talk about the mountain and raising the elevation of a certain section of the city. I’m sure everyone drops their option on here and makes critiques, which may influence what you work on. I would ignore them if I were you. Best way to approach this massive project would be to understand all your different areas of this project better before you keep changing grades, width of bridges, etc. Get the mountain laid out, your other elevation changes, and see how that flows out to the adjacent areas. You may have to build walls at the canal to accommodate the grade that you’re going to raise. And you don’t know the width of the canal yet based on walkways on each side, which may affect the bridges you are working on now. I suggest looking at the Chicago river in the city and study how they did the great walkways on the river. Overall, I say focus on the big picture and not listen to people critiquing details of the bridge. I have a feeling it’s going to change again structurally and visual upgrades. Good luck dude!
Great first comment. You should make them more often 😊. He definitely needs to focus on the terrain around the mountain and the elevation of the buildings around the canal first before the smaller details. These features will drastically alter the surrounding areas.
I gave him my city of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Oakwood Mall is a great example of built with hills. Along with the Downtown/Water Street area. My City is hills and 2 rivers. Granted Minneapolis/St.Paul would also be a good city to look at to.
I think one way to help make those two bridges look more integrated is to fill in the green space between them with a hillside slope, blending them into an organic slope.
Have you tried running the train anti-clockwise? The extra distance before the bridge might allow the train to build up a bit more speed. Love the updates, thanks!
Starting the train slope around the corner would add some depth and break up that long stretch of straight track going down the full length of the table on the side. Also, depending on how tall you make it in the curve that could be a access point to the pier and the fishing beach in the corner if you had the figures walk under it.
In a hilly area, sidewalks are sometimes on very different levels to the road. Often higher, with a token fence for example. So, unless you want it all level, I'd say don't sweat over it.
Pull up Google maps and look at the Downtown area of Indianapolis, Illinois, USA. Zoom in towards Military Park and you'll see the canal system they have. Maybe you can get some inspiration from that. I would say close off the canal to boat traffic and make it implied that the water runs under the road, train, and pedestrian walkway via people made underground pipes/tunnels. That's how it is for the Indianapolis' canal. That way you can make the road and train tracks flat. Build some paddle boats for the canal instead. Or... raise up the city so the canal is deep enough to where boats can pass under a flat road. P.S. Please un-tile the train tracks :)
It looks much better. But could you quickly just change it a bit more by cutting a hole in the table and running the train underground? That would be lovely! Could the pedestrians on the boardwalk be catapulted over the water into a giant net? And the cars get on a small ferry? (And now i wait for the update to the update of the update video!) Is there anything he can't build?
Bricksie I’m new to your channel and love what you do! My daughter and I watch just about daily. Looking at the water, I love the depth you create with the different blue bricks and the translucent blue bricks you put over it. However the whitecaps you have created seam to take away from the layers of depth you have created. They almost read as clouds and not whitecaps of water. Love your city nonetheless. Just an observation which means continue to do it like you want.🫡 Keep Bricking!
The corner panel of rocks does not fit in with the other stuff. It kind of just looks like it's out of place. I think you should mould those rocks into the corner around the train tracks and make that all just one colour of water.
Not sure how you want the canal to be, but most canals I've seen don't really change width unless theyre coming in to a split or floodgates, not sure how they are in Canada! Just a thought, no biggie if you want to do it differently it's your city and I actually admire that you always put your own vision first!
You could raise the front part of your city by two or even four bricks and maintain the canal and the coast on the present level. This would make it more realistic because now the level of the water could overflow the city if there would be 'bad weather'. 😉
For the train bridge - is it possible to drop the track one brick - but keep the height of the bridge sides ? Bit of an illusion but means the train would only need to rise and drop 5 bricks rather than 6 bricks over the same distance? The Lego math might not work but wanted to suggest it!
I’d say swap the boutique hotel with the university so the hotel guests have a nice canal AND seaside view from their suites. And the university on the corner makes it more accessible by the train for commuting students.
In my City the University is by the river. the River runs through it,, a Hill, on the Hill. We're about to have our 1st hotel on the river. The rest are several blocks away or miles. So to me it looks normal to me.
The bridge looks soo much better! The height does not really have that sudden increase in elevation anymore! And the transition from up to down is so smooth 🤩🤩🤩
LOVE your work Bricksie. Why not add some construction worker Mini Figs on top of your robot vacuum cleaner? They shouldn't weigh too much and would look really cool working away all day.
Hi! Your Lego city looks awesome already. I love the effort you put into each and every single one of your videos and builds alike. I think you’ve made a great change on these bridges. The alignment truly shows your determination to have everything as detailed as it could be. Thank you for your entertaining content you always offer to us.
The city should go right to the walkable pier. The train al the road should be crossing the canal inside the city. The fix should be quite easy because the space left by bringuing the city to the coastline should be enough. The alternative is make the pier an the traintrack integrated (like a tramline) but having 3 bridges al cramped is not right
The new bridges look good ! I still believe raising all your downtown area would solve your problems with the canal, but I'm looking forward for when you will elevate the block in the back, with the city hall
Have you considered using the transparent dark blue 1x4 plates for the water in the canal? That might give the impression of greater depth in that area.
Easy fix for the colored bricks under the bridge: just swap out the yellow bricks and move the red up higher. Catching a hint of blue, black, brown, and green would be totally fine.
Do an overhead train on the right side up to the front and make it go down after the train yard it will allow you to do more front corner with the rocks and they can walk under the train to get to the boardwalk
Hey bricksie are you planning on doing an underwater section to your lego city?? I think that would be pretty cool, but I’m not sure if you’ve got the space yet, so just wondering.
