This video is what feeds misconceptions about EVs. No one fast charges to 100%. That car will blast up a lot of charge in 13 mins then you leave. Road trips are no problem and not stressful if you don't try to run the car almost to 0%. Most ppl stop at 10 or 15% and it's not a problem. Hope to see more real world use case videos in the future
No kidding and with both a distance and a guess o meter miles displayed, when one number starts getting way lower than the other, you know you need to be better than average efficiency to get there, so you gotta either plan for better efficiency sooner or charging, it ain't rocket science.
Tfl should probably stick to truck videos, EV content always seems poorly planned. This video should have ended in the first 2 minutes when the car told him that he couldn't make it. One quick 10 minute stop and it would have been fine.

I live in Riverside and make the drive to LV a couple times a year. It was interesting to see TFL drive through a familiar landscape. Honestly, though, who does the drive to Vegas without making a stop in Baker, where there are multiple DC fast charging stations and lots of places to eat? If you were stressed, you only have YOURSELF to blame for it - a 15 minute pitstop in Baker and you could have cruised into LV worry-free. Let me also say that this video would have been TONS more useful if you had provided us with just a couple metrics such as average speed, cabin temperature and actual distance traveled. There is a big difference between the quality of the information in TFL videos when Andre or Tommy is the lead, and those done by the bench team.
I go to Las Vegas from my home in Glendora California quite frequently. My 2021 Mach E has made it to Vegas without having to stop to charge. To manage this I have to keep my speed at 75mph. Speeds on this stretch are much higher. I’ve learned that it’s best to stop at Baker California and charge the car to 80%. It’s just a 20 minute stop which allows you to use the restroom and grab a drink at the gas station adjacent to the charging station. No discomfort or range anxiety this way.
I think this is a very valuable video. I think that as EVs get more and more popular, there are going to be a lot more people who road trip like this: They're going to charge up to 100%, and then drive the car down to 0% (or as close as possible), all the while expecting to be able to find a reliable and quick charging station. Electrify America, EVGo, and other charging networks need to expand their charging station networks and improve reliability so that they can accommodate these types of drivers as well as those who like to plan out their roadtrip
While I agree infrastructure expansion is absolutely necessary if adoption is to continue to rise and is happening as we speak and will make things easier as they continue to proliferate, the idea that the 20ish fast chargers along this route, which are all shown on the car's nav, are not enough is silly.
TFL has made so many EV videos and still don't know how to plan their trips. It's usually faster to stop fast charging at 80% and if necessary make an additional short stop near the destination instead of waiting at the original charger for 100%.
Yeah I mean we watch these to learn, both about the cars and the EV experience, not watch people who don't know what they're doing screw around in their free press cars. It gets old at this point. Kyle Conner is much better to watch in that regard and so much more informative about the cars and what they can (and can't) do.
Just scrolled thru the comments and I just shake my head… “If you’d slow down 5mph you’d of made it”🤦♂️ “99% of charging will be done at home”🤦♂️ “You need to stop charging to 100%”…says no one ever with and ice or hybrid filling gas tank on an all day road trip. It really amazes me how people preaching EVs can now all of a sudden not care about saving time in a world of instant gratification.

It amazes me the number of compromises and concessions people are willing to make (all with a higher price tag) just for a status symbol and the false premise that they are “saving the planet”. People are just not very smart.
I think people need to understand that if they don’t drive long distance a lot, stop getting stressed about it. They also need to understand that if they don’t save every second in an ICE car (peeing anyone?), don’t try to save every second in an EV. EVs are good for urban commuting, don’t get an EV if you drive long distance every day and like to hold you pee for 5-6 hours. Simple as that.
@@wgemini4422 do you live in a cold (below zero F) location? Do you have a personal garage or charge point with 240vac and you can leave plugged in until you need it? These are questions that xv mfgs and sales associates down play. I’ve read articles where you can loose 30-50% battery capacity in cold climates if you cannot keep plugged in. So where are you gonna go to charge up? That’s right!…super duper chargers along with every other xv owner with same situation. And we have 1% adoption on road. Just imagine when we hit 10-20%🤯
TFL you really got to stop charging to 100% at DC fast chargers. You shouldn't be charging much above 80% most times. EVs take a little bit of planning. Charge to 80% and plan for one 20 minute charging stop back to 80% half way along the way.
Then Hyundai needs to advertise that, if you do damage to the battery by charging it consistently to 100%, then the ACTUAL range of the vehicle is 240 at 80%. When I fill up my car at a gas station, I always get a total of 300 to 350 on a single tank of gas and filling it up doesn't do damage to anything so the real range of the car is around 300+. EVs are very misleading and slightly dishonest with their range numbers and Tesla is no exception.
@@kingbran923 it's less about the wear and tear and more about the slow charging speed above 80%, taking 40 minutes to charge to 100% makes no senses time wise because 20 minutes of that was going from 80% for 40 minutes of charging he could have went from 10% to 80% twice. PS it's not a problem to once and awhile to charge to 100% it's when you do it regularly and when it's not needed and wasting time. Switching to a new technology the consumer has a duty to inform themselves.

Could part of the initial difficulty in starting the charging session be because Alex hooked the car up to the Dispenser 1 cable while he tries to work the screen and app saying "We are at Dispenser 2." The Dispenser 2 cable was still hanging in its cradle right in front of him.
Each dispenser's number is at the top like a gas station. Each EA dispenser I've seen has two cables. It doesn't matter which cable you use. Some have CCS on one cable and CHAdeMo on the other. Most have dual CCS.
10 years after introduction of the first long range electric vehicles and the supercharging network these "range anxiety" videos really start to annoy. You could have easily got to the destination charger by reducing speed by 5 mph from the beginning. Even better you could have saved time by not charging to 100% but 80% and planning another short (10 minutes) stop.

If they are travelling in the fast lane at the speed limit, (limit meaning no faster) they are not impeding traffic. As long as they are not intentionally blocking you, they are not impeding you. That’s how the law is applied. I know, did it for 30 years before retiring. Too many people think the speed limit is a suggestion,,,,,, dumb *sses.
You passed several charging locations where you could have easily have gotten a charge. Even the rest areas have charging stations. It's a no brainier to stop for 10 minutes to do it low stress.
But title says RANGE TEST. they are trying to go the longest on a single charge. But they fail huge by no telling the results. HOW many miles did you get? 5 miles left tells you nothing GoM changes every second depending on your driving habits.

If you’re going to do a coast to coast trip, please test the apps that can help plan routes, stops, and charges to see what’s the most accurate and has the best features like identifying and prioritizing fast chargers. Also, if any of them give info about the location: number of chargers, number available, amenities at the location, etc.
The Ionic-5 famously advertises 10-80% DCFC charging in 18min...a single 5min stop along the way at a DCFC would have turned this into another boring 'see how easy it is to road trip in an EV' video but that wouldn't cater to the anti-EV crowd who want to go on and on about how you can't road trip in an EV... Or the driver could have driven 5 mph slower during the trip, and again had another 'see how easy it is to road trip in an EV' video... but making YARA (Yet Another Range Anxiety) video gets more clicks I guess🙄. Also did he drive in Eco mode to disconnect one motor and boost range by ~10%?
Still waiting for the "pro EV crowd" to explain to me how we are going to transition to a 100% non-fossil fuel powered grid & be able to handle the demand without causing us to head to a 2006 Iraqi like power grid. @@MoctezumasRevenge1 First off, even if we use fossil fuels to generate the power for EVs, the overall efficiency of that cycle is much higher than burning fossil fuels in automobiles because of the higher efficiency of EVs in converting electrical power to kinetic energy; ~90% for an EV vs ~20% for an ICE vehicle. Burning coal (coal to electricity is about 40% efficient in a modern generating plant) or LNG to produce electricity for an EV cuts overall emissions and energy use by about 1/2 compared to burning fossil fuels directly in an ICE vehicle. Coal to EV = 40% x 90% = 36% efficiency vs 20% for an ICE vehicle (check out Engineering Explained's YT channel). 2ndly, there are numerous alternatives to burning fossil fuels with the primary one, being an overall increase in the efficiency of home and businesses in their use of electrical power (better insulation, more efficient appliances, LED lighting, etc) and then the entire south of the USA is prime territory for PV and hot water solar, and wind generation (with that EV parked in your garage as a mobile power storage unit) and the rest of North America can easily increase green/renewable power generation as well (Nuclear- wind- solar with energy storage and release to smooth the variable generation cycle) . We are just on the cusp of producing low cost sodium-ion batteries for large scale power storage, for example, which would allow large scale home PV grid tied solar to provide reliable 24-7 home to grid power generation and LFP and LMFP battery tech dramatically increases Li-ion cycle life. Again, there are lots of YT videos on how the grid can transition away from fossil fuel use.
I see fandom on both sides. I drive 2 EVs both Tesla. The experience should be the same as a gas car don’t defend this ev crowd. Range is to low Big thing people forget is EV’s are not as necessarily as efficient as you’d think. You have a lot of parasitic losses. You don’t lose gas when parked not true with EVs. Gas equivalent is 33.7 kw so 19 or so a gallon. EV’s pros Connectivity NVH quite Air conditioning when parked dog mode etc. Much better motor controls. Tesla separate Best charging infrastructure (will open up to all later) Great FSD items. Great range. I think for most gas is still the way Possibly a Tesla if you want to try a ev but don’t think all EV’s will be like a Tesla.

Not worth it, my Hyundai average’s 42mpg, gas right now is $3.59 a gallon so if I put $25 in my tank that’ll give me around 295 mile range & I don’t have to fight to find a charger or one that actually works or wait till it’s done charging.
@@coreyallen1090 Yea in California where they're artificially raising gas prices with an insane gas tax. That is why California gas prices are notorious for being the highest in the country and therefore not a real comparison.
The big take away here: Tried pulling into one charging station - none of the chargers were working. Final charging station - one of the chargers out of order. That seems to be a common occurrence on many of the EV videos I've seen. You think lines at the gas stations were bad. Just wait until people are lined up at the charging stations with each one taking 45 minutes to one hour plus.
I guess planning plays a key role with EV road trips where you need to understand the best charging speed to recharge, range, availability of chargers, etc. My question is how best the vehicle does this automatically and provides the correct recommendations.
I guess I’m sort of confused. Would you have the same adventure with a gas car? It takes 15 gallons to get to Las Vegas I’m only going to put in 14 gallons and not refuel let’s see if I can make it. @@2pi628 Not necess. I always start road trips at a 100 (home charging). For around town it's 80-20. Sometimes I will go below 10 on road trips but only if I am sure of where I am and where I am going.
You set yourself up for this one. One should ALWAYS have at 10& margin MINIMUM, more if you know you'll be climbing. You could have zapped some juice at either Barstow or Stateline.

So what did we learn about the car in this video? Did we learn what the inside feels like? Did we learn how the pedal and steering inputs respond? How it accelerates and handles? How it cruised on that highway jaunt? How fast it charges when used normally? How it compares to other cars in its class? What makes this car special (or not so much)? No. We learned nothing. We watched someone who self-admits he doesn't know what he is doing tell us how he made a boring point to point trip more stressful. Thanks.
I would imagine that if you had driven at around 55 mph on the interstate you might have made it without the added range concerns. Added wind resistance at high speeds can really lower range.
Someone needs to make a portable battery pack (kind of like a EV gas can) for trips just like this. I wouldn't mind slow charging it kind of like a USB power bank.

For me this is a must test for every single ev which comes out. Thing is no car should have to make it 100 percent la to vegas on a full charge. A car should be able to successfully make that trip with only one 20 to 30 minutes DC fast charging stop at either Victor ville; Barstow; Yarmo; Baker; that rest area near the agro check point; or Primm Nv.

I like this channel and follow TFL for a few years. However this video is a disappoitment. I understand you want to include more drama in your videos to gain more viewers but it comes at the price of misrepresenting EVs and specifically road tripping with them. I am sure no one with gas car road trips to the point to arrive at gas station with almost no fuel just because EPA combined range is 5 miles more than the distance you are planning to drive.
Yep, incredibly stupid law. Makes no sense, charging the same price for someone pulling 60kW as someone pulling 260kW. Needs to be changed. Right now, incredibly good deal for ioniq, taycan, hummer, etc vehicles that can pull 200kW+ though at current prices, subsidized by cheaper slower charging vehicles of course.
EA handles will time out if you don't initalize the charge right away. Allways use the app to activate EA stations it works much better that way. A road trip in an EV is not stressful if you plan ahead. I bet if you redused your speed by 5 miles per hour you would have no problem making your destination and 5 miles an hour slower is not that more time especially if it viods a stop to charge.

That Ioniq5 is a road trip beast. Honestly seriously not the car’s or infrastructure’s fault that you had “range anxiety”. How many ‘I’ve never done this’ videos does TFLEV need to publish? When has it ever been a good idea to look at any car’s projected range and to proceed to drive that exact distance at 74 mph? Gas cars don’t work like that either. Charging to 100% at DCFC stations is another thing to avoid. It damages the battery. And so on.
Since the vast majority of people in the US who drive have, in fact, never done this, I don't see the problem with 'never done this' videos. As far as the range thing goes, agree with that 100%. That is a universally bad idea, especially when the trip is uphill, through the desert, in 112 degree weather. That's crazy. Also I've made that drive before and the traffic gets pretty bad as you get near Vegas. Getting stuck in the middle of a busy freeway, in turtle mode would be potentially very dangerous and extremely annoying to other drivers. If you want to do range testing, do it in a more controlled and responsible way. Also as a 'never done this' person, doesn't the automatic slowing of the charging rate as the battery nears full charge protect it? Or is that insufficient?
That's unfortunate. I was able to make the trip from "LA" to Vegas in a single battery charge in my 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV. I left from the same location as WOT MotorTrend's run in Elon's 2012 Tesla Model S, which is technically cheating because the Inland Empire is higher in elevation and only about 230 miles to Vegas. LA to Vegas proper is about 250 miles with about a 2,000' net elevation increase, so it's not an easy run for most EVs to make while doing the posted speed limit.
That's why I always filled up on half of tank. In an EV case, charge up when it's half charged. To avoid a situation, like this! It's a scary feeling to be stranded somewhere.
That's not the best advice for an EV. The top half of the battery takes longer to charge. You're better off getting low (10%) and then charging to about 60-80% and then repeating that process on a roadtrip -- it makes the stops much shorter. You'd never want to charge above 80% on an EV roadtrip unless you absolutely had to.
Except when the wheel falls off. I agree Tesla super chargers are the superior network but Alex the EV guy must of not checked plug share or the Electrify America app to see if the charger were working or full. Plus he chose to go down to 8% I always check the app ahead of time and leave a 10 to 20 mile buffer. This was all his fault
People that don't live with evs always worry. I own a ev6 and I drive three hundred miles a week and never worry why because I know my car and 2 it's one of the fastest charging cars money can buy
Let's do the math with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV vs. my Hyundai Sonata Limited Hybrid. Current gas prices where I live $3.26, $21.08/3.26= 6.46 Gallons. My average Mileage on the Highway is 50 MPG, 50x6.46=323 Miles of range for the same cost that the Ioniq 5 is only going 223 Miles. So I get 100 extra miles for the same cost to "Fill Up". Starting MSRP For a Ioniq 5 is $39,950 as of now. My Sonata Limited Hybrid was MSRP $36,474 though I didn't pay that much. So that's another $3,500 less than the Ioniq 5. Now of course EV Charging rates will vary from location to location just like gas prices. What's not going to really vary is that when I fill my tank up I have about 650 miles of range on a tank for currently about $40 where as the Ioniq 5 on a full charge only has about 250 miles of range with no AC.
Yes, this is the reality of electric cars. They are cool, and I love to see them get better but the reality is they aren't there yet. The energy density of the batteries, the efficiency, the range, just not there yet. In my opinion, EVs should advertise their range numbers with a comfortable mentality, like if the company only recommends you charge to 80% daily to avoid damaging the battery, then they should advertise the total range at 80%. If you tell me the car gets 300 miles, I'm going to expect 300 miles every time I "Fill up" but since I can only charge to 80% for daily use, my REAL range is 240 and even less if you want to be comfortable and use the AC or radio. That just isn't enough and it's slightly dishonest. EVs have a LONG way to go.

I am a 10-year plug in car owner. I agree with the premise of your calculations. But, they are too favorable to the cost of driving an EV. In the future, governments are going to have to replace the lost gas tax revenue from gasoline. Essentially, electric vehicles are a getting a free ride as regard to road taxes. This will be done either by taxing electricity, the car itself or with mileage fees. This will significantly raise the price of driving an electric vehicle.
The amount of broken or unusable chargers on the Electrify America network is abysmal. Also, paying $21 for 220 miles of range is really no better than an efficient ICE fill up. In a future world with more chargers and demand on them, I can see public charging end up the same or more as fueling a gas car. This is why Tesla is the only real EV company with a solid, reliable charging network of fast chargers.
These CCS chargers are the worst, I'm so glad I bought a Tesla. It hurts just to watch these videos, I can only imagine the pain other EV owners go through. Hopefully they fix them, but I dought it.
I don’t think people understand the purpose of this video is to test the range of the vehicle. Also there are tons of people out there in gas burners that run their car until the fuel light comes on. If you don’t think running out of power for some people in the future is going to be a problem you are terribly mistaken. I wonder if I’m the future an ev dies on the side of the road if tow trucks will be equipped with fast charging generators? Interesting business idea. The motto could be We bring the power to you!
Another DA video from TFL. Plan to fail and you will. You don't navigate to a level 2 charger on a road trip then complain about how slow the charge is. You guys can and should do a whole lot better.
This is youtube not real life. TFL knows the "EV haters" drive views so they make all these videos that feed into their bias. Pressing an EV into a long distance trip and then complaining about recharging is like saying Honda Civic is junk because it won't tow a 5,000 lb trailer.
the biggest culprit for range here which he refused to turn off is the air conditioning... somebody should tell him humans are not reptiles, learn to cope until you can't anymore...he could have had a lot more range towards the end had he rolled down the windows and turned off the air conditioner for a few miles...i rarely turn my air conditioner on and i drive a plug in hybrid. but that's just me; i just don't get hot like other people as they seem to act like they're melting as soon as the temperature hits 75 degrees they simply MUST have the air conditioner on the whole time. 🙄

3:13 That is not entirely accurate. The instructions on screen are fine, but yes, you can also initiate and then plug in (it just takes the system longer to start charging). Personally, I follow the instructions on screen because the total activation time is faster. The only issue with the instructions is, people try to activate the session while the car and charger are first initiating communication (just a few seconds), and that can sometimes (but not always) hang the system. The first time, you spoke for long enough that the vehicle and charger's base communication timed out, so it wouldn't matter how you tried to initiate. The car was no longer communicating with the charger at that point. The other thing I've noticed is that if you botch a session like that, it can take a while for the system to reset, which again can make it look like that method for activating the charger doesn't work.

Please stop with this FUD. I’m plenty sure you could have stopped somewhere mid way for a 10 minute break (restroom, get a drink) and made it easily with no stress or anything. These videos debunking EVs are annoying and are simply untrue. I’ve had EVs for 10 years now and NEVER had any range anxiety. When you’re low on charge, find a charger. There are more than enough now. A 10 minute stop always helps. You’d do the same with a gas car (and, yes, we still see gas cars stranded on the side of the road because the driver decided to be “brave”, aka stupid, and tried to use every last drop of gas). So, you can be plenty stupid with gas and EVs.

with a fast charging car like the Ionic 5 you have to cater to its strength. Charge fast and once it slows.. leave and charge fast again later on.. 2 fast 8 minute charges >>> 1 40 minute charge

No one fast charges to 100%. That car will blast up a lot of charge in 13 mins then you leave.
Road trips are no problem and not stressful if you don't try to run the car almost to 0%. Most ppl stop at 10 or 15% and it's not a problem.

Yup, use case for 100% charge is when you know you will be doing long road trip tomorrow then you charge to 100% overnight.
This is the guy that passes up the exit when the needle is on "E" then complains about a stressful drive.
No kidding and with both a distance and a guess o meter miles displayed, when one number starts getting way lower than the other, you know you need to be better than average efficiency to get there, so you gotta either plan for better efficiency sooner or charging, it ain't rocket science.

This video should have ended in the first 2 minutes when the car told him that he couldn't make it. One quick 10 minute stop and it would have been fine.

I live in Riverside and make the drive to LV a couple times a year. It was interesting to see TFL drive through a familiar landscape. Honestly, though, who does the drive to Vegas without making a stop in Baker, where there are multiple DC fast charging stations and lots of places to eat? If you were stressed, you only have YOURSELF to blame for it - a 15 minute pitstop in Baker and you could have cruised into LV worry-free. Let me also say that this video would have been TONS more useful if you had provided us with just a couple metrics such as average speed, cabin temperature and actual distance traveled. There is a big difference between the quality of the information in TFL videos when Andre or Tommy is the lead, and those done by the bench team.

I go to Las Vegas from my home in Glendora California quite frequently. My 2021 Mach E has made it to Vegas without having to stop to charge. To manage this I have to keep my speed at 75mph. Speeds on this stretch are much higher. I’ve learned that it’s best to stop at Baker California and charge the car to 80%. It’s just a 20 minute stop which allows you to use the restroom and grab a drink at the gas station adjacent to the charging station. No discomfort or range anxiety this way.

I think this is a very valuable video. I think that as EVs get more and more popular, there are going to be a lot more people who road trip like this: They're going to charge up to 100%, and then drive the car down to 0% (or as close as possible), all the while expecting to be able to find a reliable and quick charging station. Electrify America, EVGo, and other charging networks need to expand their charging station networks and improve reliability so that they can accommodate these types of drivers as well as those who like to plan out their roadtrip
While I agree infrastructure expansion is absolutely necessary if adoption is to continue to rise and is happening as we speak and will make things easier as they continue to proliferate, the idea that the 20ish fast chargers along this route, which are all shown on the car's nav, are not enough is silly.
TFL has made so many EV videos and still don't know how to plan their trips. It's usually faster to stop fast charging at 80% and if necessary make an additional short stop near the destination instead of waiting at the original charger for 100%.
Yeah I mean we watch these to learn, both about the cars and the EV experience, not watch people who don't know what they're doing screw around in their free press cars. It gets old at this point. Kyle Conner is much better to watch in that regard and so much more informative about the cars and what they can (and can't) do.

It amazes me the number of compromises and concessions people are willing to make (all with a higher price tag) just for a status symbol and the false premise that they are “saving the planet”. People are just not very smart.
I think people need to understand that if they don’t drive long distance a lot, stop getting stressed about it. They also need to understand that if they don’t save every second in an ICE car (peeing anyone?), don’t try to save every second in an EV. EVs are good for urban commuting, don’t get an EV if you drive long distance every day and like to hold you pee for 5-6 hours. Simple as that.
@@wgemini4422 do you live in a cold (below zero F) location? Do you have a personal garage or charge point with 240vac and you can leave plugged in until you need it? These are questions that xv mfgs and sales associates down play. I’ve read articles where you can loose 30-50% battery capacity in cold climates if you cannot keep plugged in. So where are you gonna go to charge up? That’s right!…super duper chargers along with every other xv owner with same situation. And we have 1% adoption on road. Just imagine when we hit 10-20%🤯
TFL you really got to stop charging to 100% at DC fast chargers. You shouldn't be charging much above 80% most times. EVs take a little bit of planning. Charge to 80% and plan for one 20 minute charging stop back to 80% half way along the way.
Then Hyundai needs to advertise that, if you do damage to the battery by charging it consistently to 100%, then the ACTUAL range of the vehicle is 240 at 80%. When I fill up my car at a gas station, I always get a total of 300 to 350 on a single tank of gas and filling it up doesn't do damage to anything so the real range of the car is around 300+. EVs are very misleading and slightly dishonest with their range numbers and Tesla is no exception.
@@kingbran923 it's less about the wear and tear and more about the slow charging speed above 80%, taking 40 minutes to charge to 100% makes no senses time wise because 20 minutes of that was going from 80% for 40 minutes of charging he could have went from 10% to 80% twice. PS it's not a problem to once and awhile to charge to 100% it's when you do it regularly and when it's not needed and wasting time. Switching to a new technology the consumer has a duty to inform themselves.

Could part of the initial difficulty in starting the charging session be because Alex hooked the car up to the Dispenser 1 cable while he tries to work the screen and app saying "We are at Dispenser 2." The Dispenser 2 cable was still hanging in its cradle right in front of him.
Each dispenser's number is at the top like a gas station. Each EA dispenser I've seen has two cables. It doesn't matter which cable you use. Some have CCS on one cable and CHAdeMo on the other. Most have dual CCS.

10 years after introduction of the first long range electric vehicles and the supercharging network these "range anxiety" videos really start to annoy. You could have easily got to the destination charger by reducing speed by 5 mph from the beginning. Even better you could have saved time by not charging to 100% but 80% and planning another short (10 minutes) stop.

If they are travelling in the fast lane at the speed limit, (limit meaning no faster) they are not impeding traffic. As long as they are not intentionally blocking you, they are not impeding you.

You passed several charging locations where you could have easily have gotten a charge. Even the rest areas have charging stations. It's a no brainier to stop for 10 minutes to do it low stress.
But title says RANGE TEST. they are trying to go the longest on a single charge. But they fail huge by no telling the results. HOW many miles did you get? 5 miles left tells you nothing GoM changes every second depending on your driving habits.

If you’re going to do a coast to coast trip, please test the apps that can help plan routes, stops, and charges to see what’s the most accurate and has the best features like identifying and prioritizing fast chargers. Also, if any of them give info about the location: number of chargers, number available, amenities at the location, etc.
The Ionic-5 famously advertises 10-80% DCFC charging in 18min...a single 5min stop along the way at a DCFC would have turned this into another boring 'see how easy it is to road trip in an EV' video but that wouldn't cater to the anti-EV crowd who want to go on and on about how you can't road trip in an EV... Or the driver could have driven 5 mph slower during the trip, and again had another 'see how easy it is to road trip in an EV' video... but making YARA (Yet Another Range Anxiety) video gets more clicks I guess🙄. Also did he drive in Eco mode to disconnect one motor and boost range by ~10%?

@@MoctezumasRevenge1 First off, even if we use fossil fuels to generate the power for EVs, the overall efficiency of that cycle is much higher than burning fossil fuels in automobiles because of the higher efficiency of EVs in converting electrical power to kinetic energy; ~90% for an EV vs ~20% for an ICE vehicle. Burning coal (coal to electricity is about 40% efficient in a modern generating plant) or LNG to produce electricity for an EV cuts overall emissions and energy use by about 1/2 compared to burning fossil fuels directly in an ICE vehicle. Coal to EV = 40% x 90% = 36% efficiency vs 20% for an ICE vehicle (check out Engineering Explained's YT channel). 2ndly, there are numerous alternatives to burning fossil fuels with the primary one, being an overall increase in the efficiency of home and businesses in their use of electrical power (better insulation, more efficient appliances, LED lighting, etc) and then the entire south of the USA is prime territory for PV and hot water solar, and wind generation (with that EV parked in your garage as a mobile power storage unit) and the rest of North America can easily increase green/renewable power generation as well (Nuclear- wind- solar with energy storage and release to smooth the variable generation cycle) . We are just on the cusp of producing low cost sodium-ion batteries for large scale power storage, for example, which would allow large scale home PV grid tied solar to provide reliable 24-7 home to grid power generation and LFP and LMFP battery tech dramatically increases Li-ion cycle life. Again, there are lots of YT videos on how the grid can transition away from fossil fuel use.

Big thing people forget is EV’s are not as necessarily as efficient as you’d think. You have a lot of parasitic losses. You don’t lose gas when parked not true with EVs.
Gas equivalent is 33.7 kw so 19 or so a gallon.

Much better motor controls.

Las Vegas resident here. There is a free level two charger at the “M “casino directly to your left at 8:55 of the video. Granted it’s only level two, but free is free. A little tidbit for next time.

Not worth it, my Hyundai average’s 42mpg, gas right now is $3.59 a gallon so if I put $25 in my tank that’ll give me around 295 mile range & I don’t have to fight to find a charger or one that actually works or wait till it’s done charging.

The big take away here: Tried pulling into one charging station - none of the chargers were working. Final charging station - one of the chargers out of order. That seems to be a common occurrence on many of the EV videos I've seen. You think lines at the gas stations were bad. Just wait until people are lined up at the charging stations with each one taking 45 minutes to one hour plus.

I guess planning plays a key role with EV road trips where you need to understand the best charging speed to recharge, range, availability of chargers, etc. My question is how best the vehicle does this automatically and provides the correct recommendations.

I've noticed that if I am driving above 65mph it takes A LOT more power. I am almost certain you would have made it if you had HDA set to 60 or 65.
You set yourself up for this one. One should ALWAYS have at 10& margin MINIMUM, more if you know you'll be climbing. You could have zapped some juice at either Barstow or Stateline.

So what did we learn about the car in this video? Did we learn what the inside feels like? Did we learn how the pedal and steering inputs respond? How it accelerates and handles? How it cruised on that highway jaunt? How fast it charges when used normally? How it compares to other cars in its class? What makes this car special (or not so much)? No. We learned nothing. We watched someone who self-admits he doesn't know what he is doing tell us how he made a boring point to point trip more stressful. Thanks.

I would imagine that if you had driven at around 55 mph on the interstate you might have made it without the added range concerns. Added wind resistance at high speeds can really lower range.

For me this is a must test for every single ev which comes out. Thing is no car should have to make it 100 percent la to vegas on a full charge. A car should be able to successfully make that trip with only one 20 to 30 minutes DC fast charging stop at either Victor ville; Barstow; Yarmo; Baker; that rest area near the agro check point; or Primm Nv.

I like this channel and follow TFL for a few years. However this video is a disappoitment. I understand you want to include more drama in your videos to gain more viewers but it comes at the price of misrepresenting EVs and specifically road tripping with them. I am sure no one with gas car road trips to the point to arrive at gas station with almost no fuel just because EPA combined range is 5 miles more than the distance you are planning to drive.
We have a law in Ontario that states only the power company can charge per kWh. So all out DC chargers charge by the hour. Most are around $18/hour.
Some states in the US charge by the minute and I believe that is because some states have that same law.
Yep, incredibly stupid law. Makes no sense, charging the same price for someone pulling 60kW as someone pulling 260kW. Needs to be changed. Right now, incredibly good deal for ioniq, taycan, hummer, etc vehicles that can pull 200kW+ though at current prices, subsidized by cheaper slower charging vehicles of course.

EA handles will time out if you don't initalize the charge right away. Allways use the app to activate EA stations it works much better that way. A road trip in an EV is not stressful if you plan ahead. I bet if you redused your speed by 5 miles per hour you would have no problem making your destination and 5 miles an hour slower is not that more time especially if it viods a stop to charge.

When has it ever been a good idea to look at any car’s projected range and to proceed to drive that exact distance at 74 mph? Gas cars don’t work like that either.

Since the vast majority of people in the US who drive have, in fact, never done this, I don't see the problem with 'never done this' videos.
As far as the range thing goes, agree with that 100%. That is a universally bad idea, especially when the trip is uphill, through the desert, in 112 degree weather. That's crazy. Also I've made that drive before and the traffic gets pretty bad as you get near Vegas. Getting stuck in the middle of a busy freeway, in turtle mode would be potentially very dangerous and extremely annoying to other drivers. If you want to do range testing, do it in a more controlled and responsible way.
Also as a 'never done this' person, doesn't the automatic slowing of the charging rate as the battery nears full charge protect it? Or is that insufficient?

That's unfortunate. I was able to make the trip from "LA" to Vegas in a single battery charge in my 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV. I left from the same location as WOT MotorTrend's run in Elon's 2012 Tesla Model S, which is technically cheating because the Inland Empire is higher in elevation and only about 230 miles to Vegas. LA to Vegas proper is about 250 miles with about a 2,000' net elevation increase, so it's not an easy run for most EVs to make while doing the posted speed limit.

That's why I always filled up on half of tank. In an EV case, charge up when it's half charged. To avoid a situation, like this! It's a scary feeling to be stranded somewhere.
That's not the best advice for an EV. The top half of the battery takes longer to charge. You're better off getting low (10%) and then charging to about 60-80% and then repeating that process on a roadtrip -- it makes the stops much shorter. You'd never want to charge above 80% on an EV roadtrip unless you absolutely had to.

This is why even though I like the non-Tesla EVs, Tesla is the only stress free way to road-trip an EV currently.
Except when the wheel falls off. I agree Tesla super chargers are the superior network but Alex the EV guy must of not checked plug share or the Electrify America app to see if the charger were working or full. Plus he chose to go down to 8% I always check the app ahead of time and leave a 10 to 20 mile buffer. This was all his fault

People that don't live with evs always worry. I own a ev6 and I drive three hundred miles a week and never worry why because I know my car and 2 it's one of the fastest charging cars money can buy
Let's do the math with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV vs. my Hyundai Sonata Limited Hybrid.
Current gas prices where I live $3.26, $21.08/3.26= 6.46 Gallons. My average Mileage on the Highway is 50 MPG, 50x6.46=323 Miles of range for the same cost that the Ioniq 5 is only going 223 Miles. So I get 100 extra miles for the same cost to "Fill Up". Starting MSRP For a Ioniq 5 is $39,950 as of now. My Sonata Limited Hybrid was MSRP $36,474 though I didn't pay that much. So that's another $3,500 less than the Ioniq 5. Now of course EV Charging rates will vary from location to location just like gas prices. What's not going to really vary is that when I fill my tank up I have about 650 miles of range on a tank for currently about $40 where as the Ioniq 5 on a full charge only has about 250 miles of range with no AC.
Yes, this is the reality of electric cars. They are cool, and I love to see them get better but the reality is they aren't there yet. The energy density of the batteries, the efficiency, the range, just not there yet. In my opinion, EVs should advertise their range numbers with a comfortable mentality, like if the company only recommends you charge to 80% daily to avoid damaging the battery, then they should advertise the total range at 80%. If you tell me the car gets 300 miles, I'm going to expect 300 miles every time I "Fill up" but since I can only charge to 80% for daily use, my REAL range is 240 and even less if you want to be comfortable and use the AC or radio. That just isn't enough and it's slightly dishonest. EVs have a LONG way to go.
where do you live? the gas price that you are giving is real low. It also was his first time road tripping an EV so of course he didn't drive the car the best way.
I am a 10-year plug in car owner. I agree with the premise of your calculations. But, they are too favorable to the cost of driving an EV. In the future, governments are going to have to replace the lost gas tax revenue from gasoline. Essentially, electric vehicles are a getting a free ride as regard to road taxes. This will be done either by taxing electricity, the car itself or with mileage fees. This will significantly raise the price of driving an electric vehicle.
The amount of broken or unusable chargers on the Electrify America network is abysmal. Also, paying $21 for 220 miles of range is really no better than an efficient ICE fill up. In a future world with more chargers and demand on them, I can see public charging end up the same or more as fueling a gas car.
This is why Tesla is the only real EV company with a solid, reliable charging network of fast chargers.
These CCS chargers are the worst, I'm so glad I bought a Tesla.

I don’t think people understand the purpose of this video is to test the range of the vehicle. Also there are tons of people out there in gas burners that run their car until the fuel light comes on. If you don’t think running out of power for some people in the future is going to be a problem you are terribly mistaken. I wonder if I’m the future an ev dies on the side of the road if tow trucks will be equipped with fast charging generators? Interesting business idea. The motto could be We bring the power to you!
At the start, the charging issue, that’s going to break the EV conversion. It can’t be that difficult to charge a car…

Plan to fail and you will. You don't navigate to a level 2 charger on a road trip then complain about how slow the charge is. You guys can and should do a whole lot better.
This is youtube not real life. TFL knows the "EV haters" drive views so they make all these videos that feed into their bias. Pressing an EV into a long distance trip and then complaining about recharging is like saying Honda Civic is junk because it won't tow a 5,000 lb trailer.
I know this is for testing but I’d never do it. I’d never plan to run my EVs below 30%. Just like I don’t plan to run my gas vehicles below 1/4 tank.

the biggest culprit for range here which he refused to turn off is the air conditioning... somebody should tell him humans are not reptiles, learn to cope until you can't anymore...he could have had a lot more range towards the end had he rolled down the windows and turned off the air conditioner for a few miles...i rarely turn my air conditioner on and i drive a plug in hybrid. but that's just me; i just don't get hot like other people as they seem to act like they're melting as soon as the temperature hits 75 degrees they simply MUST have the air conditioner on the whole time. 🙄

3:13 That is not entirely accurate. The instructions on screen are fine, but yes, you can also initiate and then plug in (it just takes the system longer to start charging). Personally, I follow the instructions on screen because the total activation time is faster. The only issue with the instructions is, people try to activate the session while the car and charger are first initiating communication (just a few seconds), and that can sometimes (but not always) hang the system.
The first time, you spoke for long enough that the vehicle and charger's base communication timed out, so it wouldn't matter how you tried to initiate. The car was no longer communicating with the charger at that point. The other thing I've noticed is that if you botch a session like that, it can take a while for the system to reset, which again can make it look like that method for activating the charger doesn't work.

Please stop with this FUD. I’m plenty sure you could have stopped somewhere mid way for a 10 minute break (restroom, get a drink) and made it easily with no stress or anything. These videos debunking EVs are annoying and are simply untrue. I’ve had EVs for 10 years now and NEVER had any range anxiety. When you’re low on charge, find a charger. There are more than enough now. A 10 minute stop always helps. You’d do the same with a gas car (and, yes, we still see gas cars stranded on the side of the road because the driver decided to be “brave”, aka stupid, and tried to use every last drop of gas). So, you can be plenty stupid with gas and EVs.
When the AWD range gets to 350 mile territory, then I'll get an EV.
