Haha - I love how Aaron's vest seemed endless, I guess I'm not the only one carrying around half a store in the woods! A quick tip/suggestion - toss the TP and get yourself a travel pack of flushable baby wipes. The package is easier to find in your vest and the wipes double as quick hand cleaners, which can be especially useful in the field if you get into something nasty and/or into some poison ivy/oak/sumac.

I've seen a lot more stuff than that in a turkey vest - multiple calls of each type etc. They go pretty light in my opinion. I go out with just 2 mouth calls in my shirt pocket and water in my side pants pockets sometimes.

Permethrin and a thermacell will deal with the bugs. Plus, permethrin is scent free after it dries. Use a big zip loc sandwich freezer bag to keep your TP in. Keeps it dry during rain storms and also keeps it from falling apart as well. I keep a small zip loc freezer bag for my phone, wallet, licenses and other things that can be damaged if i happen to fall in streams. Given how much you guys use boats too. I'd consider keeping one in my vest. Plus, on the boat, keep a change of clothes in a sealed bag just in case. I went in jan 4th. One year. Near 0 degrees. Would've been in serious trouble had i not had a change of clothes. Good luck!

Remington 870 express is great for turkey's. I've tried a ton of different shotguns: Browning, Benelli, Winchester, and Mossberg. Remington 870 is the best and easiest to take apart and clean. Comes with three choke tubes.

    My vest content
Gloves-one pair of HS Struts, one pair of rubber
Mask- some HS Struts mask that came with my gloves
Calls- I use Tipton Creek Turkey calls. Mostly because they're made in my hometown, and they're a great group of guys. I have 4 mouth calls in a case, a box call, a custom slate call my wife got me for Christmas, and 2 locators, an owl and crow.
Shells- I shoot Remington Nitros, I have at least 6 shells on me in addition to the 3 in my gun.
Thermocell-nobodys missing any season from west nile virus, if you are, you need to reevaluate your gear
Pen and pencil- I actually just bought a fisher space pen to toss in my vest, it literally writes in any condition.
Multitool- I carry a Gerber MP 600, because I have a stockpile of them. One in my work bag, one in my hunting pack, one in my truck, one in my wife's car, and one in the junk drawer in my kitchen.
Knife-I carry 3 actually. A Gerber Gator on my belt in a sheath, a Gerber Gator gut hook fixed on my belt, and a Vital folder with extra blades in my vest.
Skoal-Fine cut, the only stuff I dip.
Snacks- usually venison bologna, crackers, and some kind of candy. I'm hypoglycemic, so if I get the shakes in the woods I'm screwed.
Binos- I have a small pair of 10×42 Bushnells I keep in my vest.
Water-I bring usually a bottle with me, but I also have a life straw and roll up bottle in my vest, because if I run out I can refill.
Fire- I keep a Bic, Matches, and Ferro Rod in my vest, because getting lost can happen.
Lights- I have a headlamp and handheld light with extra batteries.
    Toilet paper- self explanatory
First Aid- I keep an IFAK in the back pouch of my vest, I'm a paramedic who also teaches wilderness medicine classes, so I keep in stocked with things that I could need if I roll an ankle, ect as well as control ABC's

I jumped on it & got the Carlson's longbeard xr .660 choke & now I'm popping targets at 60 yds with the longbeard xr 3 in #4, I'm talking 22 pellets in the head & neck at 60 of #4. I recommend a Rem 870 express 12 ga. Jake. Lots of after market barrels and choke tubes out there. Put sling swivels on it (Mike's) and sling it up. Currently I have a 20 inch rifle sight barrel with a 1 inch extended turkey tube. I put glow sights on it to help me keep my head down and focus on tky noggins. I've shot a lot of 3" 2 oz Federal 4's but moved to 3" 1 7/8th oz 5's. Really don't think one needs $4-$6 a shot loads. Box calls are hard to beat unless it's wet. I like an old slate and peg for close range clucks and purrs.

Light enough to carry for days, simple enough to rig up for turkey hunting... and although i've never been able to get it patterned for 40 yard shots, inside 35 yards it's never failed me yet.

I won a tri-star upland hunter over and under 20 gauge at a NWTF banquet the other day. I will put a turkey choke in the top barrel so I can use it for longer shots and see which choke that came with the gun will work better for shorter shots and won't be such a tight pattern to possibly miss at shorter distance. It will be nice to be able to choose which barrel I want to use for the situation. Its lighter and shorter than my 870. It will be fun to play with, you might consider an over and under.

When purchasing a Turkey gun, I'd strongly recommend against cheap. I have a mossberg 835 ulti mag and last year bought a Remington versa max sportsman Turkey model. I'll never go back to the mossberg. The gas inertia semi automatic shotguns are the way to go. Buy once and be happy with the purchase rather than saving a few dollars and wishing you had bought something different.

When I used to dig clams, we got candy apple blue model car spray paint, don't shake it much so you get the clear blue, spray the lens of the head lamp. As long as your looking down, you can see where your going and what your doing but others can't see the light unless you look at them. Why did we do that you might ask? The good clams are in closed area's, had to make a livin' in Maine, it wasn't easy. Might work for turkey?

I use a Remington 870 20ga compact. If I were going cheaper than that I would go for the Stevens 301 20ga. Especially since your running a lightweight set up. I’d definitely shoot the TSS in those though 40yds and under or not. Go cheap gun and good choke and shells.

Jake if your looking for a cheap option I have been very impressed with the tristar semi auto raptor from Wal-Mart under $200 with a banelli full turkey choke $20 amazon. Keeps me from beating up my browning or changing chokes. Ted needs a new # LOL cant wait for turkey tour

Walmart H&R 20 guage was my first turkey gun. Killed 12 long beards some jakes and few hens with it. I sold it only because I wanted a 12 gauge. Another great thing is the gun cost 180 dollars plus choke tube and sights

For an inexpensive 20ga turkey gun I would go with the 20ga 870 youth (what Zack and Ted use) or a 20ga mossberg 500. I have both and they are super reliable. Good Luck and thanks for sharing what you guys use.

the clips on my vest at least are used for clipping your car keys to them so you don't loose em running through the woods

Highly recommend the Thermocell. Skeeters are already coming out in MS. I’m sure they’ll be bad. Come see me at Sportsmans Warehouse in Southaven, MS when y’all make it to the state this year.

The tallies in the vest from Cabela's was put there by Cabela's. It's a mark to say it's a bargain cave item, this way cashiers know if it's actually a bargain cave item or not.

I like the idea of the tape however on the face of the vest looks like a turkey eye sore!!! Ted found that out in Mississippi.

Pretty sure the gator clips are for a diaphragm call so if you want it to be easily accessible you can clip it on there.cool setups

Pretty hard to beat a remington 870 if you're looking for an affordable work horse of a shotgun.

I don't know what it is about me or mine but it does not shoot where I point it. Probably something to do with gun fit...

Mossberg 835. It’s such a workhorse of a shotgun. Idk if I buy into the over bored barrel but it patterns good with the cheap Nitro 3” #5-6. When it comes down to shotguns it boils down to where do you prefer the safety to be.

I have bought into the overbore thing i guess.. love the range of the 835! Now i just wish it didn't weigh 55 lbs

Jon Juline mine is at least 12 years old. And it’s lighter than my wife’s 870 and my sons 20gauge. I believe I have the 22” barrel and with a custom spray paint camo and I get some funny looks shooting trap with the guys that have the couple thousand dollar over under guns.

The Cabela's ad for their turkey vest says "A tethered alligator clip affixed to the inside of the pocket holds sandpaper or a scouring pad." So you'll be prepared to rough up your slate call, or to scrub the pot back at camp. :)
