'Mission' from this album is an absolute winner. The lyrics speak to a mature take on inspiration and obsession with creating art and music. It's wonderful. And Alex's solo to close out the song is one of his best. A must-listen.

The female voice is American singer-songwriter Aimee Mann and she only sings the line "Time stand still", the rest of the lyrics are sung by Geddy, the only time Rush used another singer. I know so much about Rush now, and it's because of you guys lol. I had a bit of a hard time adjusting to this album, Hold Your Fire, but there are a couple of songs I do like, Force Ten is a great song from that album. I still don't know every song on this album.

I heard TSS on the radio when it was released and I was so pumped. I had started listening to Rush between Pictures and Signals and loved every album, until this one. It is still the one which probably has the fewest songs I like (from song start to end) on it. TSS I still love. Also Prime Mover and High Water. Most of the rest I might like the chorus but not the verses, and then vice versa on other singles. But those three I do like.

One of life's great mysteries to me, is how little this album is reacted to.
Hold Your Fire is easily the best album from the great 3, as I like to say, that being the 80's masterpieces, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows & Hold Your Fire, with the latter being Rush's 80's opus as far as fusing synth, bass, guitar & drums is concerned. You won't find a better example of bringing all that together in perfect compositional music form. No one comes close.
The opening track from Hold Your Fire is Force 10 & if you ever wanted a musical slap in the face, that would be it. From there it's just banger after banger of perfectly crafted rock-synth genius & you can tell that this is a culmination of what Rush's 80's sound would be. It's an absolutely beautiful album.
Presto & Roll The Bones are also fantastic albums that go in a slightly different direction but still signature Rush.

This was their first radio single from the album, I remember the day I heard it on "release day" and came in after it had started and was like "OMG, is that Rush??? It IS!"... I like all their generations of playing styles, this was definitely a "bit different" but one of my favorite songs of all times (as a (then aspiring) keyboardist, I loved this album and the synths, it still had plenty of hard driving rock songs as well on it, it was actually much more "introspective/meditative" in the lyrics overall for the album, than the prior direction which were trending more "future-philosophic" in nature.
If you wanted trivial lyrics with hard rocks, this isn't the album (although it was actually one of their best in radio play singles compared to some that got almost none, this had I think 3 songs that hit rotation enough that right after release you'd hear at least one during a day on the local rock radio, but nothing like Tom Sawyer popular).
For me, this is the album to listen to when in a "mellow thoughts" mood. Counterparts is the one for a more "humanistic" take, Vital Signs and Signals are the "80s-here-and-into-the-future" vibes, etc, (actually probably the 2 albums that get the least play in my collection honestly, although Farewell To Kings may be less played, I actually like the compositions on FTK better, but you have to be in a certain mood, LOL)...
    Anyhow, love ya'lls reactions!

Neil in 2014: "A song I still really like. Autobiographical in a sense. The whole thing of wanting to slow things down and absorb the moment. Feel this moment a little bit stronger, since we can't adjust the time to have more. I get frustrated when people say where did the time go. You just weren't paying attention. A day is a day, a month is a month, a year is a year. For me, it started in 1986, I remember sitting down and writing why 1986 was the greatest year ever. So if I was able to think that way in '86, now I know even better to value the passing of time and the richness of experience."

Hold Your Fire has a bunch of really great, more commercial-sounding tunes and not to be sexist, but it is lyrically deep and seems to connect easily with the female persuasion.
Geddy's voice is smooth, restrained, and less of an acquired taste. This is the album after Power Windows and before Presto. Top songs on the record, in no particular order, are Force 10, Time Stand Still, Open Secrets, Mission, Second Nature, and Lock and Key.
The playing is incredible and a very refined, but smooth. It's Rush's closest thing to adult contemporary. At the time, it alienated some of their hard rock fans, because while contains incredible songs, musicianship and performances, it is definitely Rush lite.

I saw RUSH on this tour, fantastic concert. They did not have the guest vocalist, Aimee Mann, with them during the tour , they had her recorded vocals coming through the PA. system.

Chrissy Hynde? Where are you getting this info? This is Aimee Mann, then singer bassist of Til Tuesday ("Voices Carry.")

I just read Narvik's comment, that this and Presto were his first albums ... I probably would have liked it more, then now, as I heard Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and Signals before. It's just a different sound, not bad, but not as good as early 80s🤘

I wouldn't request Hold Your Fire as an 'album reaction' necessarily, but definitely worth a listen if you're curious. Many Rush fans would rank this lower than other records. But it's still Rush, so it's not terrible hahaha I've always loved this song :) Force Ten is another good one from this album. Thanks for sharing, Nick and Lex!

You guys didn’t even touch on the best part of this song, the lyrics! Summers going fast nights growing colder, children growing up old friends growing older, freeze this moment a little longer, make each sensation a little bit stronger, experience slips away, experience slips away, the innocence slips away.

Not a popular opinion, but ... this is peak Rush to me. The songwriting, instrumentation, lyrics are all as good as it gets. HYF is probably my favorite along with MP and PW. If you are looking for another from this album... Prime Mover, Force Ten, Mission, Turn the Page, Open Secrets. Anything but Tai Shan. Side note, the title is "Time Stand Still" - it's a demand for time to stop in this perfect moment.

Great song choice! I love this song!
I got into rush into the 90s so I don’t view them as Rush “periods”, I love all their stuff I own m, some more than others, but still… I don’t own that album and just looking at the song titles, it seems like it’s the only one I know…
They have a Documentary called named after the song

Thanks for reacting to this song. I happen to love '80s Rush, because I grew up in the '80s and like music from that era in general. (By the way, Aimee Mann was in the band Til Tuesday, and their big hit 'Voices Carry' is also worth a reaction). Personally, I really like Geddy's vocals in the '80s and into the '90s; he had a mellower, more melodic delivery. I suggest checking out the song 'Mission'; my personal favorite is the live version from Birmingham in 1988; Alex's guitar solo at the end is among his most emotional.

Great discovery guys! This may be considered the last '80s Rush album sequencers and synth textures everywhere, hi-fi Wal bass sound. Though Presto was released in 1989, it spearheaded the '90s Rush sound. Geddy goes back toi the Jazz Bass, Alex dropped some delays and took a page of his own book back. HYF is highly emotional, less preaching and more dealing with it.
My favorite for many years, this album is a dish for a connoisseur. May you enjoy it as the fine vintage it is!

Force Ten, Open Secrets, Prime Mover, Mission, and this one are the standouts. A lot of people dislike Tai Shan on this album but I think it's a beautiful song most enjoyed with Neil's lyrics
