The statement about portfolios being useless and no one caring about your side projects is misleading tbh. No one cares if you made a Pokémon API or a simple blog, but if you write something non-trivial it gives you something to talk about in terms of goals, challenges, problem solving, scaling, etc. The key is don’t get stuck in tutorial hell and while you’d like to build something different, there’s a lot of value in reinventing existing products so long as they are sufficiently complex.
