I hope he continues with Dream Theatre. Theres so much more than what hes already listened too. "The Dance of Eternity", "The Enemy Inside", "The Count of Tuscany", "Illumination Theory", "The Ministry of Lost Souls", At Wits End, Space Dye Vest and so much more. There is no other band in history that has ever made as many amazing tracks as Dream Theatre. Dream Theatre is the greatest unknown band to mankind.
He wont like the dance of eternity. Lets first recommend the easy-going songs and then if he likes them lets go with the more complex songs. Just my honest opinion.
Next should definitely be The Mirror as a prequel to the AAA Suite. However, The Mirror is best listened to coupled with Lie as the songs, despite being different in subject, flow into each other on the album.
The Count of Tuscany The Dark Eternal Night Breaking All Illusions At Wits End Endless Sacrifice Stream of Consciousness Space Dye Vest Innocence Faded Lines in the Sand Constant Motion Forsaken Illumination Theory Barstool Warrior The Best of Times(contains one of Petruccis best solos) Some ideas on where to go next with Dream Theater :)
I think you'd love A Nightmare to Remember. It's a long & epic track with serious heaviness, great transitions and just enough emotion. Prog fans would love to see In the Presence of Enemies I, II (myself included). As for lose-your-shit riffs look no further than As I Am, The Enemy Inside & The Dark Eternal Night. Cool videos, mate. Keep them coming.
Metropolis 1, under a glass moon, THE ENITRITY OF THE METROPOLIS 2 ALBUM IN ONE SITTING (it's a mega concept album, so every song is connected without little to no breaks, it's amazing. It's like a movie.)
I've never understood the dislike for their newer albums. You'd think Prog fans would more comfortable with change. I also really like a lot of the songs from the "New Mike" era.
Alex Robinson You’re right, there is a live version with a symphonic orchestra in the “Score” live, for the 20th anniversary world tour. Absolutly fabulous.
Great reaction, as always. I'm glad you're doing several DT songs. I sometimes have given you advice to give certain bands ample chance to get you hooked. Now you're helping me that way. I never could get into DT in the past, but now that you have done several songs I'm starting to appreciate their talent. Keep up the good work.
Loved the reaction! Thank you! I say that for the next big Dream Theater thing, you should try out a song called "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence". It's split into 8 parts and is 42 minutes long. Don't get confused about the name. The album it comes from is named the same way. The song starts with an instrumental part showing off riffs of the future parts in the whole thing. The song itself speaks about mental disorders people have to struggle with like Autism, Schizophrenia, PTSD, Bipolar disorder, even depression and death. That song is my most favourite of all in Dream Theater history and I actually cried at some parts. The riffs are insane and I call it the "progressive masterpiece" of it's time. Parts can be listened to separately because each one works as a small song but it's totally worth listening it all the way when they connect together!! It is quite long but like you said before. Time flies while listening to these songs and we don't even notice it haha Keep on reacting! Hope to see more from ya! Cheers!
It’s funny cause i’d rank this song 4th “best” on the album. They’re all good, but in my opinion The Best of Times, The Count of Tuscany, A Nightmare to Remember beat this song by a long shot. Again, amazing song still 🤘🏼
Excellent reaction to the 12 Steps! Next suggestions for me would be Sacrificed Sons, Misunderstood, Bridges in the Sky.. or you could do the entirety of Metropolis Pt. 2 for an amazing experience!
I recommend The Ministry of Lost Souls and The Count of Tuscany. By the way, if I remember correctly, the whole song is a blend of the other ones, there are no moments where there are no references, but they do it so well that it seems like a new song and not a mix.
14:02 I flipped out because I knew this rhythm/riff was familiar to me and was trying to remember which 12 step suite song it referenced. Turns out it's basically the bassline for the interlude part of Paradigm Shift by Liquid Tension Experiment!
The Shattered Fortress is on an album many seem to think you'll enjoy. Other songs on the album like Nightmare to Remember, Count of Tuscany and Best of Times could be a good way to start. Otherwise there is 30 years of great music to delve into, maybe with Dance of Eternity or Metropolis Part 1?
It's been really fun joining you on this Dream Theater journey! When you have a chance, I'd strongly recommend "The Sky is Red" by Leprous - there is a phenomenal drum playthrough vid for it that is a fantastic watch/listen.
I just discovered your DT reactions. I have been a huge fan of the band forever and your reactions hype me up! If you ever get back to this, I highly recommend "Scarred" off their album, Awake. Such a great song!
You have to get your mind wrapped around Metropolis part 1, get it very well into your head, then listen to Scenes From A Memory... You will really appreciate it if you have part 1 well understood. Dream Theater does this type of thing all the time if you like that. That's one of the things fans appreciate so much. To re-invoke certain feelings wrapped in a different package, etc. It's amazing.
Glad you accidentally started with the right song and continued with the rest of the suite as per our recommendations :) Looking forward to future DT reactions. Just stay away from the SCORE live dvd because those videos tend to get taken down real fast. Other shows seem to do better and I'm sure plenty of people will recommend Boston videos because they have great quality.
Listen to songs from Awake. The Mirror/Lie is probably best to start, as many have pointed out. Erotomania is an amazing instrumental. Then after that, if you're feeling ambitious, go track-by-track, in order, through Scenes From A Memory (after listening to Metropolis on Images & Words first) to hear an absolute masterpiece from these dudes. No one is disappointed with Scenes From A Memory.
I've been non-stop commenting on every video for you to react to The Count Of Tuscany. But TODAY I feel like you should hear --> METROPOLIS PT. 1 it will definitely show you a side of DT you haven't yet heard. Cheers & keep em comming!
Here's another plug for Ayreon, Age of Shadows/We are Forever (Taycott lyric video). It's more progressive metal from Europe. Ayreon uses a lot of guests, and DT has had its share of contributions. If you like Easter eggs Ayreon delivers, weaving threads between album themes and story lines throughout a couple of decades of their music catalog.
For anyone interested, I recently made a video that demonstrates all the callbacks and recurring themes/riffs within the 12-step suite. Have a watch, it really demonstrates how awesome this series of tracks are!
For a guitar player (good or bad is not important) like me and many many many others, this song is perfection, if you like the previous ones, because it mixed up all the previous riffs making a perfect musical conclusion of the suite. So I personally love the Shattered Fortress and it always will be one of my best songs 🙏🏻👍🏻
Now that you’ve completed the 12-step suite, I think it’d be more than fitting to visit The Mirror from their ‘94 album Awake, which in a way is a prelude to the suite because it details Portnoy’s struggle with alcoholism before he went into rehab. Or you could try out The Enemy Inside off their self titled album with their current drummer Mike Mangini to get a feel of how he works with Dream Theater
Please react to The Best Of Times by Dream Theater next. You're going nuts with the final solo on this song. Also, The Best Of Times was written to Mike Portnoy's father who unfortunately passed away and was fighting against cancer when this song was released.
Now that you've listened to Mike portnoys suite, why not check out some DT written by the other band members? Check out learning to live by John Myung, or as I am by John Petrucci.
If you’re trying to “subscriber grind,” their biggest single is ‘Pull Me Under.’ A lot of people might have been exposed to ‘Panic Attack,’ because it was on one of the Rock Band games. A more modern “radio single” by them is ‘As I Am.’ But personally, I think you’d like some of their heavier shit more, so I’d go with ‘Honor Thy Father’ or ‘The Dark Eternal Night’ or ‘A Nightmare to Remember’ for your next reaction.
Theres so much more listened too. There is no other band in history that has ever made as many amazing tracks as Dream Theatre, I would really recommend "The Dance of Eternity"
I really like DT but that comment is ridiculous 🙄. Far many better bands out there. They rinse and repeat lots of their music. They haven't evolved too much in my opinion. I mean songs on Images and Words sound like more recent songs. I can name 3 bands far superior to DT. King Crimson, Pink Floyd and Radiohead all evolved their sound. I could name even more bands. The prog rock band Yes could play them under the table.
If u like, The Mirror is kind of an unoficcial/official prelude to this concept. It's kind of referenced here and there throughout. So why not give it a spin. :)
Good reaction man!! And good plans for the future, I wish you the best!!. Now, make us a favor to all of us, go and check "Scenes From A Memory", one of the best prog metal conceptual albums of all time. Greetings from Chile.
What’s next from DT?🤞🏼
Illumination Theory Live Boston
The Count of Tuscany
At wits end
Illumination Theory it’s a must
The album Scenes from a Memory
Also, you might be ready for Metropolis pt 1. It's a good one
Metropolis pt2: Scenes From a Memory is one of their best albuns, if not the best.
The genius part of the riff at 8:57, is that is a Frankenstein riff made of little parts of other riffs from the previous songs.
In the presence of enemies part 1 & 2 for the next reaction !
Yes!
I‘ll second that!

If Dream Theater is the greatest unknown band to mankind, which I disagree with btw, but if so, than at least spell their name right ;)
If you think DT is unknown and amazing, try Haken on for size. Similar sound and creativity but definitely less known
Please continue doing Dream Theater! They have so many more masterpieces. I strongly recommend "In the Name of God" and "The Count of Tuscany".
that album is fire, I recommend The Best of TImes or the count of Tuscany, cheers
"Dream Theater - Metropolis Part 1: The miracle and the sleeper" plzzzzzz
I'm always for pushing this song
definitely a must !!!
its too much for him btw
@@rizkyjelang4737?
Why do you guys suggest such a song for a newbie man
That song is amazing but will turn off most of the new listeners because it's extremely complex
Next should definitely be The Mirror as a prequel to the AAA Suite. However, The Mirror is best listened to coupled with Lie as the songs, despite being different in subject, flow into each other on the album.
UP !
The mirror/Lie is my favorite song ever
I recommend Illumination Theory live at boston. They have a whole orchestra with them
1000 times yes. Best live performance of that song in existence.
Hope to hear you continue listening to Dream Theater! I would really recommend their live stuff from Score and Budokan.
The Count of Tuscany
The Dark Eternal Night
Breaking All Illusions
At Wits End
Endless Sacrifice
Stream of Consciousness
Space Dye Vest
Innocence Faded
Lines in the Sand
Constant Motion
Forsaken
Illumination Theory
Barstool Warrior
The Best of Times(contains one of Petruccis best solos)
Some ideas on where to go next with Dream Theater :)
Dude... Just imagine a concert with this setlist😍
@@csukovitsgyuri2507 Exhaustion and/or excitement would kill before the end of the show 😂
I could back almost all of those, in general if not exactly in that order. Good list
@@phredhenson9638 Wasnt really in a particular order, just a couple of my favourites at the top of my head, but thanks :)
@@HaakonNerby exactly
Scenes from a memory full album but you have to do it in one go to get it. Also follow along with lyrics as it has a story
That would work well as a celebration livestream
This ending, my friend... give me goosebumps every time I heard.
I think you'd love A Nightmare to Remember. It's a long & epic track with serious heaviness, great transitions and just enough emotion. Some other DT suggestions: Honor Thy Father, The Count of Tuscany, Stream of Consciousness, Learning to Live, Bridges in the Sky, Blind Faith
I recommend the track "Honor thy father" the first 15sec will drop your jaw =)
Metropolis 1, under a glass moon, THE ENITRITY OF THE METROPOLIS 2 ALBUM IN ONE SITTING (it's a mega concept album, so every song is connected without little to no breaks, it's amazing. It's like a movie.)
unpopular opinion: the enemy inside, on the backs of angels, three days, at wit's end, breaking all illusions
All brilliant songs, although Three Days might be confusing without the background.
Breaking All Illusions! Masterful!
I've never understood the dislike for their newer albums. You'd think Prog fans would more comfortable with change. I also really like a lot of the songs from the "New Mike" era.
unpopular: The Enemy Inside is literally the only great DT track after 2007
@@Malkovith2 I dunno, Outcry, Bridges In The Sky and Pale Blue Dot and Viper King are all great.
It's really cool that you are catching all those riffs, proves that you are active listener when reacting. Really appreciate that.
Try “6 degres of inner turbulence”, a 42 minutes song of Dream Theater with differents parts, very close to 12 steeps suite.
do the live version (Score Live album)
Alex Robinson You’re right, there is a live version with a symphonic orchestra in the “Score” live, for the 20th anniversary world tour. Absolutly fabulous.
Space-Dye Vest

React to In The Name of God by them. Probably the most soulcrushing main riff from them
Loved the reaction! Thank you! I say that for the next big Dream Theater thing, you should try out a song called "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence". It's split into 8 parts and is 42 minutes long. Don't get confused about the name. The album it comes from is named the same way.

Another song(s) with some massive riffs is In the Presence of Enemies Part 1 & 2!
"Mike Portnoy's Shattered Fortress" are concert program with full 12steps suite. On vocals are Ross Jennings, Daniel Gildenlow and Ted Leonard.
Doing Scenes From a Memory next would be a cool project to see!
In my mind it's by far their best work

Opeth A fair judgement/burden
I think you would LOVE 'In The Presence of Enemies - Part II'
I think you may like "Honor Thy Father" sounds like a Scandinavian Prog Metal, it's awesome.
You must to listen Dream Theater - Enigma Machine. Its incredible
