Although its interesting to compare Putin w/ Richard III i don't think that gives good insights into Putins logic, which is akin to that of any other alligator.
Basically Putin figured "this is the best chance! murrica just ran from Afgunistan! its now or never, not getting younger!" however, he badly miscalculated, and i attribute that to his age. He would never have made the mistakes in 2022 back in 2014, p.s. I speak russian fluently, was working for state as a fulbrighter in ukraine during the 2014 revolution. I dont think he is catastrophically ill, he is however Old.
