Is saying "please" actually the opposite of polite?

A UCLA study looked at the use of the word and found that it's used largely when people expect the answer will be "no."

Please stop telling people violent thugs are "teens". Please stop promoting people that hate the country that provides them with the freedom to disagree. Please stop pushing anti-police rhetoric. Please stop hiding the identity of suspects when your story is titled "public help needed finding dangerous attacker". Please just try and have some integrity when reporting the "news".
