I have a theory on the appendix, before humans cooked food we ate raw meat and maybe it helped with cleaning the meat and veggies but as humans stopped eating raw meat the appendix got smaller and is now useless.
I do have a question and a little story, I had surgery 5 or 6 days ago for scoliosis and there's a drainage tube, will the tube leave a cool circle scare?
I had it when I was 10 years old. Honestly it was the worst pain I’ve ever experienced and from what I was told my appendix was gangrene when it was cut out

When I was a kid at our family's cemetery plot, I saw my brother's name, and teased him about it. I was scolded by my father and grandfather. Come to find out, it was my grandfather's brother who died of appendicitis back in 1925, when he was only 10. My brother was named after him. Amazing how medicine has evolved in almost 100 years since death from appendicitis is not common anymore.
When I had my ACL replaced, the last thing I remember is laughing my ass off from the anesthesia, and the coldness of the OR. I actually started waking up during the surgery, and while I couldn't see, I remember a big man telling me "HEY, GO BACK TO SLEEP" which I did. Woke up in the recovery room and got a nice cold diet dr pepper. All in all, I give the experience a 7/10, since I was very hungry.
Did he said that in a panick? Like he saw you waking up and immediately went “oh shit” and just told you to sleep in a moment of panic? And you just said “oh okay, you guys are still opening my organs up? Imma sleep some more thanks” Sorry, but I’m laughing in thinking the faces the doctors made when they saw you waking up. Like “Uh, this wasn’t in the books”

My appendicitis experience was awful and im surprised i didnt die. I spent 12 hours waiting and getting tests done in the ER before i was allowed to stay overnight, and my severely inflamed appendix was not noticed until a surgeon saw it the next day. The timing of the appendicitis was absolutely horrid. I spent close to two weeks dealing with the fever, pain and lack of appetite because i wanted to get through my high school graduation and my birthday. after waiting so long and not seeing improvement, i realized its probably something more serious than a stomach bug and asked my mom about if i should go to ER After getting it removed, if i remember correctly, my surgeon said my appendix was "about 2 and a half times its usual size". i may not be a doctor but it really sounds like i could have easily died had i waited longer, or just be unlucky earlier.
My appendicitis experience sucked as well, and might have given me a long term side effect as well, so to give you context, I was in a hospital my family always went to for… emergencies, pregnancies, etc. the hospital wouldn’t take me for some reason, so they did some stuff with me to make sure my condition wasn’t just, like built up gas or whatnot because that pain was noticed at night, so I felt that when I first woke up in the middle of the night, and when they finished their testing, they speculated that it’s appendicitis and I had to move to a different hospital in Boston for them to treat me (35 minute drive) so we got there, we got me into a room fast because that hospital called in for me, we had an ultrasound done on me, and what do you know, it bursted, I don’t remember the rest of my experience, because my hospital had games like Wii Mario Kart, and that was the only game I enjoyed playing, I did have to walk around with an IV and I had to be monitored when I took a shower or did my business in the bathroom, every once in a while the doctors would come in and give me a cookies n cream shake (with medicine in it so I wouldn’t know) and after an entire month of being in the hospital, they sent me home and said to rest, notice how I didn’t say I had it surgically removed, that didn’t happen, so I think I’m having a long term side effect because every time I wake up, I wake up to stomach pains.
I recall the afternoon leading up to my appendectomy which happened somewhere around midnight. Friends at school indicated I looked super pale; my appetite for lunch was shot to hell, and in general, I just felt like crap. Was brought home last class of the day, and I tried settling on the couch. Went to the doctor where they bombarded me with so many questions, and then was taken to hospital where I was admitted and they did the ct scan that found what I already knew I was dealing with. Went home at around 9 the next morning. Thank God mine didn’t rupture. I’m sure the abdominal pain would have been so much worse. Being anesthetized for the procedure, all I felt was a little sting in my wrist and then I was gone. But why does that part of anesthetic hurt sometimes and not all the time? I did not have the same stinging sensation in my wrist when the IV medication was given just before my sinusitis treatment procedure 7 years after my appendectomy.
@@durdleduc8520 The IV insertion went fine. It's the injection of the anesthetic that can sometimes sting or be uncomfortable. Maybe that just depends on what medication they’re using? Whatever that was, until I went under, it hurt like hell initially. There was some lingering pain in my wrist after the IV was removed, maybe a little bruising too, but that went away over time.
"Pain" is another good one by him. Also, when my dad had appendicitis, it ended up bursting after they cut him open, because i guess it wasn't where it was supposed to be? so it took them a bit to move things out of the way and find it. I guess the agitation was the last straw. But luckily it wasn't a huge deal since they were already in there.

I wonder if the inaccuracies are partially because of his fever scrambling his recollection of events. My dad's gaul bladder went bad at the start of the pandemic. He almost died from Sepsis; his organs were shutting down. He was put on a vent for about a week and because of the Corona Virus mom had to manage his health and affairs from home. The nurses were amazing keeping us informed, holding the phone up so we could talk to him while he was in a medically induced coma, and were just angels. One of the scariest events was dad's doctor asking how much effort should be used to keep my father alive. I was only privy to one side of the conversation but he must have said something to piss mom off because I remember her saying "Yesterday my husband was in fair health and enjoying life. You do whatever you need to do to keep him alive. If the circumstances change YOU CALL ME before changing anything." It was a miracle he survived that first night in the hospital. He was so close to death. I am not discounting the skill, dedication, or effort of the hospital staff but if God hadn't put His finger on the scale in dad's favor I have little doubt dad would've died . Dad got his gall bladder removed a few weeks later.
That thing about waking up after surgery is so true. I was in the OR and asked the Dr hey what are you injecting? Then I woke up in the recovery bed like wtf just happened.
I got my appendix removed in 2014. Oddly enough, I was never nauseous, but every time I ate ANYTHING I threw up. Liquids, solids, anything. Also no pain until we got to the hospital and the nurse pushed softly on my abdomen. THAT doubled me over lol. I was brought in for surgery, the anesthesiologist asked me to count down backwards from 10, I got to 8, and I was back in my hospital room. The nurses later told me that I had woken up several times during the surgery and asked them what tools and medicines they were using, and by the 3rd time the knock out guy was cursing lol. I guess I should have told them my body burns through anesthesia super fast. Whoops.
I remember when I was 14, I had an appendicitis. I remember it well, I couldn’t sleep the night before and I had massive pain in my abdomen that I had to go to the hospital the next morning. That inflammation hurt so much while I waiting for the surgery. It felt like a worm was eating my insides. The surgery was successful. Thank you for reacting to this Dr. Wagner. This brought back weird and funny memories from my appendicitis.

Pretty sure he needed the stomach pump before his surgery because it was emergency same-day, and there was no guarantee that everything he'd manage to eat had "moved on" so to speak. Especially if he had been keeping himself from vomiting.
7:12 um, wouldn't it be because he just ate a bunch of food beforehand so the doctors would want to avoid pulmonary aspiration while he's sedated during surgery? i thought it was a pretty big hint that the anesthesiologist was the one who suggested it in the first place
My brother got appendicitis recently and we all thought it was the gas station burger he ate. This absolute chad managed to hold back all this pain from 1am in the morning til 3pm when he finally called an ambulance. AND THEN UNTIL 12pm THE NEXTDAY BECAUSE THE HOSPITAL COULDNT DO THE SURGERY YET. Funny enough out of my two brothers and both parents I am the only one left with an appendix :3
I had an appendicitis scare this year, I had the creeping abdominal pain into the worst pain I’ve ever felt, I was literally writhing on the floor until the ambulance arrived. And while they were driving me to the hospital, the pain got less and less. I was about to be so mad if I got this expense for something that just went away after 20 min. The lady taking my blood at the hospital told me that it sounded like a ruptured ovarian cyst, which usually happens during a woman’s period. While I was charged a lot of money for everything, at least I learned that that was a possibility! I’d never even heard of ovarian cysts until that day.
I was in extreme pain as a child once and was checked for appendicitis and in the end it was a UTI and extreme constipation. Thanks again to my parents for validating my pain despite me trying to hide it out of thinking I was being a bother.
The appendix isn't useless, it actually seems to serves a purpose for the gut and the immune system. You don't really need it, but it's good to keep it
I woke up in the middle of my wisdom tooth surgery, and despite the fact that I was 80% cooked, it was the most excruciating time of my entire life. I couldn't express myself either, so it was basically a nightmare for the next few minutes until I regained lucidity. Btw it turns out, at some point during the surgery, the surgeon pierced through my mouth into my nasal cavity, he told me if I sneezed it could cause permanent damage. Basically never trust navy medical...
I had appendicitis few years ago, but it didn't require an operation. I was given antibiotics through an iv for a night and sent home the next day. The surgeon seemed kind of bummed they had given me antibiotics and said that it somehow messed with his diagnosis or smth. Also because I was very chipper, relatively pain free and keen to make my flight home the next day, they decided not to operate and let me go with the warning that there was a higher risk for it to happen again in the next couple of years. So far so good.

From a patient's perspective hospital can quite confusing, especially if you're super dehydrated. My experience wasn't with appendicitis, never had it, and was with the NHS here in the UK. A few years ago I was hospitalised for a few days for a stomach virus that caused be to violently throw up, I was in A&E for 13 hours too on what has to have been the most uncomfortable bed ever devised that still is technically a bed, and was left incredibly dehydrated. They plugged me with saline but when a nurse came to take my blood he somehow messed up and I started bleeding a *lot*. Still, because they thought I was probably infectious I was given my own room, had a bunch more things plugged into me, mostly painkillers and the vomiting caused incredible muscle strain like I'd fallen down a flight of stairs, and everything just kind of blurred together. I was falling in and out of sleep and kept getting woken to check blood pressure and such, but soon I wasn't even sure how long I had been there.
The appendix actually serves a purpose in the human body. Its not very important to have but its not completely useless nor a remnant of evolution. The appendix actually works with the immune system and serves as some kind of warehouse so your body can save up some immune cells when the body is under attack, but you're not that much higher at risk to get sick when its removed.
I loved this one so much tho. Kinda pulled me back to the 25th october 2021, when I had to go to the ER for pain and nausea. Well..nobody believed it'll be the appendix and after my surgery next day, they all where kinda..confused I'd say. Had a mild appendicitis, but my cecum was already necrotic...xD
I didn’t have appendicitis, knock on wood I never do, but I did have a galbladder infection. The way you experience the pain, plus the way the surgery is handled is pretty similar, I can somewhat empathize with anyone who has had appendicitis.. as close as I can offer sympathy anyway

I had appendicitis and it nearly killed me - I got to the ER just in time because my appendix wasn't just inflamed anymore but had dissolved or something. I was in so much pain I couldn't stand straight or walk. Don't wait until the last minute to go to the hospital I guess. Very glad that I'm not dead :D
I had appendicitis when I was 17 while I was at play rehearsal… IT WAS THE MOST HORRIFIC PAIN I EVER FELT! That pain still haunts me whenever I feel a cramp. But I got a lollipop after my surgery so it was all good.
It wasn’t appendicitis for me, but when I developed Ulcerative Colitis back in early 2016 I literally felt like someone was stabbing and setting me on fire from the inside. From 1-10 on a pain scale it was an 11. I spent so many days in the hospital and in bed, save for the several times I had to rush to the toilet. I lost a lot of blood and felt like I was dying. I lost around 50 pounds within a month Several colonoscopies and surgeries later and I’m in a much better place though I still take some meds for the bit of inflamed rectum I have left
Got appendectomy at a VA hospital after 2 days of "I can't bend my abdomen" pain and 8 hours of convincing them that I wasn't just there looking for drugs. Most of the staff was helpful, the ones that could make decisions on things were noticeably hostile, and my appendix apparently ruptured on the way to surgery. I was awoken 3 hours later, surrounded by family as the doctor half-explained my situation while I was still shaking off the sedative so I couldn't even process what they were saying. I laid there through most of the night with no working call light (the bed was unplugged, and the button was in the floor behind a table apparently. Another patient heard me calling for help and got someone to assist me, thanks stranger). I was discharged at 6:00am that morning with no bowel sounds, no antibiotics (which was insanely weird for a ruptured appendix), and 8 pain pills to last me the 14 days until my follow up. I ended up unable to move from the couch for the first 5 days while my body was fighting the infection and the VA wasn't returning my calls. Went to see a doctor after the 2 weeks, and he asks if there have been any complications at work. I respond that I hadn't been to work, due to the constant pain, weakness, and nausea. He was apprehensive about refilling my prescription (the area has a HUGE drug problem, so they *really* don't want anyone to have anything). Also, apparently I was supposed to be up and on my feet right after discharge, back to work the next day. Also he had no idea that my appendix had ruptured and asked why I didn't say anything to anyone (I guess the nurse who discharged me didn't relay my questions about antibiotics like she said she would and just wanted me out of there). I ended up getting doctor's orders to stay out of work for another 2 weeks, but still didn't get any pain medication or antibiotics since I'd survived for 2 weeks already. He had no doubt my body was fighting an infection after finally going over my paperwork, but as I said, local drug issues, so I think he would literally be punished for helping me. Overall, they saved my life, but I swear between the tests, the pre-op runaround, and the post-op procedures, some of them were trying to kill me. 4/10 experience. nb4 "But did you die?"

Oh boy do I have an appendicitis story. So I was 17 years old and a senior in high school, about to start our second semester of classes. We had a 3 day weekend. I spent Monday feeling a little under the weather but I figured it was just a stomach bug. I threw up once at home and still didn’t feel much relief. I actually felt worse because it felt like I had pulled a muscle from how hard I threw up (plot twist: it was not a pulled muscle). I stayed home Tuesday still feeling sick and then Wednesday came around. I had already missed the first day of my new classes and I was gonna try to push through it. Comes time to put on my shoes, when all of a sudden a HORRID stabbing pain is felt in my right lower quadrant. I start crying and lying down on the couch, then my dad (who went to veterinary school and has a sister close by who’s an MD and so is her husband) comes over and presses my side and says “Oo, that’s tender. I think we need to get you to a hospital.” On the way there I’m thinking “Hm, if I have to take a guess, this is appendicitis,” and lo and behold, my dad turns around to me and says “You probably have appendicitis, they’re gonna need to do surgery. It’s gonna be ok, it’s common, don’t freak out” (fun fact: I’ve had a crippling needle phobia since I was a kid so I was definitely not looking forward to this). We get to the emergency room. They take my blood, give me an IV and a CT scan, a doctor comes in and says “Your appendix just ruptured and you need surgery.” This whole time I’m in pain but I refuse any pain meds (because my parents being strict as they are, put the fear of God in me when it comes to any narcotics) until my surgeon comes to my in-patient bed an hour before surgery to tell me “Take the pain meds, you’ll feel better. You really don’t have to suffer.” So I accept. Knocked out quick, woke up in a lot of pain. Was on a lot of antibiotics and pain meds. After a while, I get sent back up to my room for a couple hours before it gets late at night. At one point, I have to get up and use the bathroom and both a nurse and my mom had to help me stand from the bed. I was in such horrible pain that I almost blacked out standing up the first time. It wasn’t as bad the second time. Since my appendix had ruptured, I had to stay overnight for 5 days on IV antibiotics. However they didn’t send me home with any oral antibiotics to take at home, which is an important detail. Because a few days later I got a fever and went back to the hospital. Only to find with a CT scan that the leftover bacteria had developed into two abscesses in my abdominal cavity. I was told that they were both too small to operate on and I had to be on IV antibiotics until something changed. My mom and I were awake until 3am because it took them a long time to transfer me up. Then a nurse ended up taking me the wrong way. Then a nurse was interviewing me an ungodly amount at 2am. Then *just* as I was falling asleep, I hear water spilling next to me. My mom turns on the lights and all my IV fluids and antibiotics are on the floor. We had to wait for the pharmacy to make a new batch and for a different nurse to replace it. A couple days later, I’m scanned again and it turns out one abscess got smaller and one grew. With the bigger one, they decided to stick a thick pigtail catheter in my glute to drain it. I was on a lot of pain medication so I don’t remember much. Even in the moment, everything was really hazy. I thought I was quietly muttering under my breath once I got out of the procedure but apparently I was crying bloody murder (according to my parents). I stayed a total of 8 days in the hospital until they removed the drain. They prescribed two antibiotics, one of which was Levaquin. I remember my MD aunt and uncle researching it and telling me “…They don’t make this anymore because it’s so strong, it’s borderline a poison.” And they were right, I spend another week at home finishing those antibiotics. My diet consisted of broth and gatorade and I was exhausted constantly even with bed rest. It took me a while to get back to 100% but I did it. If you’re somehow still reading this, thanks! Just felt like it was more appropriate to overexplain in this comment section as opposed to somewhere else.
my apendix blew up when i was in like.. 2nd or 3rd grade. worst thing ever so far- my dad even had a heart attack in my hospital room from being so worried about me- my mom didnt know how to do cpr so just punched the heart back to beating again.. what a nice night. the doctors were unavaible too because it was a holiday night.
The closest thing I had to appendicitis was immense pain around the midline area of the abdomen. It happened early in the morning so I had to put on clothes while experiencing unbearable pain and my parents rushed me to the hospital. By the time I got there I was vomiting a smelly, yellow liquid (not pee, smelled like what I expect half-digested food to smell like). I was sent to surgery and after the surgery the pain went away. Usually I have a fear of surgery but the pain was so bad that I didn't care, I just wanted the pain to go away or a little bit of relief.
It doesn't homie XD I got my large intestine removed due to colon cancer genetic just growing loads of tiny tumors. I'm alright and well with me handling my strict diet of bread, rice, and food items that make my bowels a bit thick since large intestine makes your stool normal. It doesn't serve much purpose technically. Just there waiting to make you sick Adding more info: also astronauts get their appendix removed before going to space to avoid any serious situations since there is no doctor on board.
It more or less is a place for your gut bacteria to chill when the gut gets flushed out from diarrhea when you get sick, so your gut bio can recover quickly. The bad news is if anything harmful hunkers up in there, it can't be flushed out, triggering a strong immune response.
i had appendicitis and ate the same morning before going into the hospital, but my surgeon when he heard i was vomiting on the way in, laughed and was like "well, that solves one problem!" and i was put into surgery quickly, within about 30 minutes of being admitted and getting the C/T scan. i got lucky with the vomiting, or he said i would probably have had to wait til the morning and it couldve been painful considering how long i had waited to get to the hospital.
My dad also got an appendix infection. So went to a doctor to check it out. After that, he had to drive around delivering eggs and his appendix had exploded, and he kept driving for an hour, before he finally went to a hospital. He's alive, but damn when I thought my dad was thoughf, I didn't know he could be that thoughf. (sorry for my bad grammar)
The appendix is responsible of holding backup microorganisms in the digestive system so in the case of an infection/disease/steroids, your gut can still function after the problem is resolved. It’s basically backup for the immune system.
When i got my appendicitis the pain stoped after taking a really soft medicing, so i wasn't in pain but i was in danger, i stayed like that for an entire day and then the next day My temperature was like in 40, got to the hospital on an abulance and waited the entire day (again) because they didn't think it was appendicitis. Next morning at 3am i finally got my appendix removed (which had already broke and spilled because we waited 2 days to get it removed... God bless Colombia's health system)
I was pretty lucky that my appendicitis was caught when it was. I was having a diagnostic laparoscopic surgery to look for endometriosis. They took my appendix out while doing it cuz it was inflamed
Random Fun Fact: The appendix ACTUALLY has a purpose, which is to reserve the good germs, microbes and whatnot for when something happens, the good germs can defend you. This also explains why when removing the appendix causes you to have infections more easily.
I get a lot of food poisoning symptoms when I eat eggs we have not found out. I'm allergic to eggs but if I accidentally eat them or eat something with it and I after like 5 minutes I immediately am sick
I had appendicitis and it was awful. I basically had been diagnosed with food poisoning . The next day I was sent into the ER at 11 pm .The surgery went well. The next morning I was in the ICU and it was awful. It went well.
I’m not sure where I might have heard this and I’m probably wrong, but I thought the appendix stored extra bacteria incase your gut-flora was having a bad time. Kinda like how the spleen stores a cup of blood incase of emergencies.
I remember my first surgery. Not for an appendix removal, cyst removal… from my wrist. It didn’t hurt me except when I tried to do push ups in gym class. And I remember having a vivid dream… with death. Wearing my face. And Death told me something so insightful that explained why I enjoyed my games. And then I woke up and forgot. This will haunt me forever and I can the power of modern medicine for that 😂. Didn’t know anaesthesia can cause memory loss.
Appendix was originally there for when we used to eat raw meat during the early age of man the bacteria in it was there to help break down and fight the raw meat bacteria, since we no longer eat meat raw like we used to it has become vestigial or no longer functioning
That was a theory. It’s actual purpose is a backup for the good bacteria in your gut in case the body purges itself. The issue is that because it’s a good hangout spot for good bacteria, it’s also a good place for bad bacteria to settle. It has a use.
When I was in the hospital being treated for appendicitis, I came out of the operating room awake but so sedated I have absolutely no recollection of any of it. My mom was next to my hospital bed as the nurses brought me in, and they were asking me questions to check that i was all good. Apparently i was speaking in fluent german to them, I had lived in germany for less than a year and most certainly did not speak fluently. The morning after I couldnt understand a word they were saying
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that it's used as a culture for digestive bacteria. You know, the good ones that are supposed to be there. Which I guess really wouldn't be obvious. Dunno where the article was, but I recall them saying the bacteria spread out from there after the patient came off some hard core antibiotics.
3:43from what I heard it's main use is to act like bacteria storage so like if your Intestines got wiped for some reason it will release emergency bacteria to take its place

I have a theory on the appendix, before humans cooked food we ate raw meat and maybe it helped with cleaning the meat and veggies but as humans stopped eating raw meat the appendix got smaller and is now useless.
I do have a question and a little story, I had surgery 5 or 6 days ago for scoliosis and there's a drainage tube, will the tube leave a cool circle scare?

I had appendicitis. It SUCKED. My wife said 'it's trapped wind, have an antacid and go to sleep'. 3 hours later I was in surgery.
I had it when I was 10 years old. Honestly it was the worst pain I’ve ever experienced and from what I was told my appendix was gangrene when it was cut out

When I was a kid at our family's cemetery plot, I saw my brother's name, and teased him about it. I was scolded by my father and grandfather. Come to find out, it was my grandfather's brother who died of appendicitis back in 1925, when he was only 10. My brother was named after him. Amazing how medicine has evolved in almost 100 years since death from appendicitis is not common anymore.
He has a lot more stories like this and I’d love to see you react to them. He gets hurt a LOT.

When I had my ACL replaced, the last thing I remember is laughing my ass off from the anesthesia, and the coldness of the OR. I actually started waking up during the surgery, and while I couldn't see, I remember a big man telling me "HEY, GO BACK TO SLEEP" which I did.
Woke up in the recovery room and got a nice cold diet dr pepper. All in all, I give the experience a 7/10, since I was very hungry.
Did he said that in a panick? Like he saw you waking up and immediately went “oh shit” and just told you to sleep in a moment of panic?
And you just said “oh okay, you guys are still opening my organs up? Imma sleep some more thanks”

My appendicitis experience was awful and im surprised i didnt die.
I spent 12 hours waiting and getting tests done in the ER before i was allowed to stay overnight, and my severely inflamed appendix was not noticed until a surgeon saw it the next day.
The timing of the appendicitis was absolutely horrid. I spent close to two weeks dealing with the fever, pain and lack of appetite because i wanted to get through my high school graduation and my birthday. after waiting so long and not seeing improvement, i realized its probably something more serious than a stomach bug and asked my mom about if i should go to ER
After getting it removed, if i remember correctly, my surgeon said my appendix was "about 2 and a half times its usual size". i may not be a doctor but it really sounds like i could have easily died had i waited longer, or just be unlucky earlier.
My appendicitis experience sucked as well, and might have given me a long term side effect as well, so to give you context, I was in a hospital my family always went to for… emergencies, pregnancies, etc. the hospital wouldn’t take me for some reason, so they did some stuff with me to make sure my condition wasn’t just, like built up gas or whatnot because that pain was noticed at night, so I felt that when I first woke up in the middle of the night, and when they finished their testing, they speculated that it’s appendicitis and I had to move to a different hospital in Boston for them to treat me (35 minute drive) so we got there, we got me into a room fast because that hospital called in for me, we had an ultrasound done on me, and what do you know, it bursted, I don’t remember the rest of my experience, because my hospital had games like Wii Mario Kart, and that was the only game I enjoyed playing, I did have to walk around with an IV and I had to be monitored when I took a shower or did my business in the bathroom, every once in a while the doctors would come in and give me a cookies n cream shake (with medicine in it so I wouldn’t know) and after an entire month of being in the hospital, they sent me home and said to rest, notice how I didn’t say I had it surgically removed, that didn’t happen, so I think I’m having a long term side effect because every time I wake up, I wake up to stomach pains.
I recall the afternoon leading up to my appendectomy which happened somewhere around midnight. Friends at school indicated I looked super pale; my appetite for lunch was shot to hell, and in general, I just felt like crap. Was brought home last class of the day, and I tried settling on the couch. Went to the doctor where they bombarded me with so many questions, and then was taken to hospital where I was admitted and they did the ct scan that found what I already knew I was dealing with. Went home at around 9 the next morning. Thank God mine didn’t rupture. I’m sure the abdominal pain would have been so much worse. Being anesthetized for the procedure, all I felt was a little sting in my wrist and then I was gone. But why does that part of anesthetic hurt sometimes and not all the time? I did not have the same stinging sensation in my wrist when the IV medication was given just before my sinusitis treatment procedure 7 years after my appendectomy.
from what i've heard, typically IVs aren't supposed to be painful at all. glad it still worked out though.
@@durdleduc8520 The IV insertion went fine. It's the injection of the anesthetic that can sometimes sting or be uncomfortable. Maybe that just depends on what medication they’re using? Whatever that was, until I went under, it hurt like hell initially. There was some lingering pain in my wrist after the IV was removed, maybe a little bruising too, but that went away over time.

Also, when my dad had appendicitis, it ended up bursting after they cut him open, because i guess it wasn't where it was supposed to be? so it took them a bit to move things out of the way and find it. I guess the agitation was the last straw. But luckily it wasn't a huge deal since they were already in there.

I wonder if the inaccuracies are partially because of his fever scrambling his recollection of events.
My dad's gaul bladder went bad at the start of the pandemic. He almost died from Sepsis; his organs were shutting down. He was put on a vent for about a week and because of the Corona Virus mom had to manage his health and affairs from home. The nurses were amazing keeping us informed, holding the phone up so we could talk to him while he was in a medically induced coma, and were just angels. One of the scariest events was dad's doctor asking how much effort should be used to keep my father alive. I was only privy to one side of the conversation but he must have said something to piss mom off because I remember her saying "Yesterday my husband was in fair health and enjoying life. You do whatever you need to do to keep him alive. If the circumstances change YOU CALL ME before changing anything."
It was a miracle he survived that first night in the hospital. He was so close to death. I am not discounting the skill, dedication, or effort of the hospital staff but if God hadn't put His finger on the scale in dad's favor I have little doubt dad would've died .
Dad got his gall bladder removed a few weeks later.
That thing about waking up after surgery is so true. I was in the OR and asked the Dr hey what are you injecting? Then I woke up in the recovery bed like wtf just happened.

I got my appendix removed in 2014. Oddly enough, I was never nauseous, but every time I ate ANYTHING I threw up. Liquids, solids, anything. Also no pain until we got to the hospital and the nurse pushed softly on my abdomen. THAT doubled me over lol.
I was brought in for surgery, the anesthesiologist asked me to count down backwards from 10, I got to 8, and I was back in my hospital room. The nurses later told me that I had woken up several times during the surgery and asked them what tools and medicines they were using, and by the 3rd time the knock out guy was cursing lol. I guess I should have told them my body burns through anesthesia super fast. Whoops.
I remember when I was 14, I had an appendicitis. I remember it well, I couldn’t sleep the night before and I had massive pain in my abdomen that I had to go to the hospital the next morning. That inflammation hurt so much while I waiting for the surgery. It felt like a worm was eating my insides. The surgery was successful. Thank you for reacting to this Dr. Wagner. This brought back weird and funny memories from my appendicitis.

Pretty sure he needed the stomach pump before his surgery because it was emergency same-day, and there was no guarantee that everything he'd manage to eat had "moved on" so to speak. Especially if he had been keeping himself from vomiting.
7:12 um, wouldn't it be because he just ate a bunch of food beforehand so the doctors would want to avoid pulmonary aspiration while he's sedated during surgery? i thought it was a pretty big hint that the anesthesiologist was the one who suggested it in the first place
My brother got appendicitis recently and we all thought it was the gas station burger he ate. This absolute chad managed to hold back all this pain from 1am in the morning til 3pm when he finally called an ambulance. AND THEN UNTIL 12pm THE NEXTDAY BECAUSE THE HOSPITAL COULDNT DO THE SURGERY YET. Funny enough out of my two brothers and both parents I am the only one left with an appendix :3

I had an appendicitis scare this year, I had the creeping abdominal pain into the worst pain I’ve ever felt, I was literally writhing on the floor until the ambulance arrived. And while they were driving me to the hospital, the pain got less and less. I was about to be so mad if I got this expense for something that just went away after 20 min. The lady taking my blood at the hospital told me that it sounded like a ruptured ovarian cyst, which usually happens during a woman’s period. While I was charged a lot of money for everything, at least I learned that that was a possibility! I’d never even heard of ovarian cysts until that day.
I was in extreme pain as a child once and was checked for appendicitis and in the end it was a UTI and extreme constipation. Thanks again to my parents for validating my pain despite me trying to hide it out of thinking I was being a bother.
The appendix isn't useless, it actually seems to serves a purpose for the gut and the immune system. You don't really need it, but it's good to keep it

I woke up in the middle of my wisdom tooth surgery, and despite the fact that I was 80% cooked, it was the most excruciating time of my entire life. I couldn't express myself either, so it was basically a nightmare for the next few minutes until I regained lucidity. Btw it turns out, at some point during the surgery, the surgeon pierced through my mouth into my nasal cavity, he told me if I sneezed it could cause permanent damage. Basically never trust navy medical...
I had appendicitis few years ago, but it didn't require an operation. I was given antibiotics through an iv for a night and sent home the next day. The surgeon seemed kind of bummed they had given me antibiotics and said that it somehow messed with his diagnosis or smth. Also because I was very chipper, relatively pain free and keen to make my flight home the next day, they decided not to operate and let me go with the warning that there was a higher risk for it to happen again in the next couple of years. So far so good.

From a patient's perspective hospital can quite confusing, especially if you're super dehydrated. My experience wasn't with appendicitis, never had it, and was with the NHS here in the UK.
A few years ago I was hospitalised for a few days for a stomach virus that caused be to violently throw up, I was in A&E for 13 hours too on what has to have been the most uncomfortable bed ever devised that still is technically a bed, and was left incredibly dehydrated. They plugged me with saline but when a nurse came to take my blood he somehow messed up and I started bleeding a *lot*.
Still, because they thought I was probably infectious I was given my own room, had a bunch more things plugged into me, mostly painkillers and the vomiting caused incredible muscle strain like I'd fallen down a flight of stairs, and everything just kind of blurred together. I was falling in and out of sleep and kept getting woken to check blood pressure and such, but soon I wasn't even sure how long I had been there.
The appendix actually serves a purpose in the human body. Its not very important to have but its not completely useless nor a remnant of evolution. The appendix actually works with the immune system and serves as some kind of warehouse so your body can save up some immune cells when the body is under attack, but you're not that much higher at risk to get sick when its removed.
I loved this one so much tho. Kinda pulled me back to the 25th october 2021, when I had to go to the ER for pain and nausea. Well..nobody believed it'll be the appendix and after my surgery next day, they all where kinda..confused I'd say. Had a mild appendicitis, but my cecum was already necrotic...xD

I didn’t have appendicitis, knock on wood I never do, but I did have a galbladder infection. The way you experience the pain, plus the way the surgery is handled is pretty similar, I can somewhat empathize with anyone who has had appendicitis.. as close as I can offer sympathy anyway

Have you seen his "Hurt" video? It's the first one I saw of his and it was so funny. The funniest noise I've ever heard came out of him upon the injury the video was about.
I had appendicitis and it nearly killed me - I got to the ER just in time because my appendix wasn't just inflamed anymore but had dissolved or something. I was in so much pain I couldn't stand straight or walk. Don't wait until the last minute to go to the hospital I guess.

I had appendicitis when I was 17 while I was at play rehearsal… IT WAS THE MOST HORRIFIC PAIN I EVER FELT! That pain still haunts me whenever I feel a cramp. But I got a lollipop after my surgery so it was all good.
It wasn’t appendicitis for me, but when I developed Ulcerative Colitis back in early 2016 I literally felt like someone was stabbing and setting me on fire from the inside. From 1-10 on a pain scale it was an 11.
I spent so many days in the hospital and in bed, save for the several times I had to rush to the toilet. I lost a lot of blood and felt like I was dying. I lost around 50 pounds within a month
Several colonoscopies and surgeries later and I’m in a much better place though I still take some meds for the bit of inflamed rectum I have left

Got appendectomy at a VA hospital after 2 days of "I can't bend my abdomen" pain and 8 hours of convincing them that I wasn't just there looking for drugs. Most of the staff was helpful, the ones that could make decisions on things were noticeably hostile, and my appendix apparently ruptured on the way to surgery. I was awoken 3 hours later, surrounded by family as the doctor half-explained my situation while I was still shaking off the sedative so I couldn't even process what they were saying. I laid there through most of the night with no working call light (the bed was unplugged, and the button was in the floor behind a table apparently. Another patient heard me calling for help and got someone to assist me, thanks stranger).
I was discharged at 6:00am that morning with no bowel sounds, no antibiotics (which was insanely weird for a ruptured appendix), and 8 pain pills to last me the 14 days until my follow up.
I ended up unable to move from the couch for the first 5 days while my body was fighting the infection and the VA wasn't returning my calls. Went to see a doctor after the 2 weeks, and he asks if there have been any complications at work. I respond that I hadn't been to work, due to the constant pain, weakness, and nausea. He was apprehensive about refilling my prescription (the area has a HUGE drug problem, so they *really* don't want anyone to have anything). Also, apparently I was supposed to be up and on my feet right after discharge, back to work the next day. Also he had no idea that my appendix had ruptured and asked why I didn't say anything to anyone (I guess the nurse who discharged me didn't relay my questions about antibiotics like she said she would and just wanted me out of there). I ended up getting doctor's orders to stay out of work for another 2 weeks, but still didn't get any pain medication or antibiotics since I'd survived for 2 weeks already. He had no doubt my body was fighting an infection after finally going over my paperwork, but as I said, local drug issues, so I think he would literally be punished for helping me.
Overall, they saved my life, but I swear between the tests, the pre-op runaround, and the post-op procedures, some of them were trying to kill me. 4/10 experience.

Oh boy do I have an appendicitis story. So I was 17 years old and a senior in high school, about to start our second semester of classes. We had a 3 day weekend. I spent Monday feeling a little under the weather but I figured it was just a stomach bug. I threw up once at home and still didn’t feel much relief. I actually felt worse because it felt like I had pulled a muscle from how hard I threw up (plot twist: it was not a pulled muscle). I stayed home Tuesday still feeling sick and then Wednesday came around. I had already missed the first day of my new classes and I was gonna try to push through it. Comes time to put on my shoes, when all of a sudden a HORRID stabbing pain is felt in my right lower quadrant. I start crying and lying down on the couch, then my dad (who went to veterinary school and has a sister close by who’s an MD and so is her husband) comes over and presses my side and says “Oo, that’s tender. I think we need to get you to a hospital.” On the way there I’m thinking “Hm, if I have to take a guess, this is appendicitis,” and lo and behold, my dad turns around to me and says “You probably have appendicitis, they’re gonna need to do surgery. It’s gonna be ok, it’s common, don’t freak out” (fun fact: I’ve had a crippling needle phobia since I was a kid so I was definitely not looking forward to this).
We get to the emergency room. They take my blood, give me an IV and a CT scan, a doctor comes in and says “Your appendix just ruptured and you need surgery.” This whole time I’m in pain but I refuse any pain meds (because my parents being strict as they are, put the fear of God in me when it comes to any narcotics) until my surgeon comes to my in-patient bed an hour before surgery to tell me “Take the pain meds, you’ll feel better. You really don’t have to suffer.” So I accept.
Knocked out quick, woke up in a lot of pain. Was on a lot of antibiotics and pain meds. After a while, I get sent back up to my room for a couple hours before it gets late at night. At one point, I have to get up and use the bathroom and both a nurse and my mom had to help me stand from the bed. I was in such horrible pain that I almost blacked out standing up the first time. It wasn’t as bad the second time. Since my appendix had ruptured, I had to stay overnight for 5 days on IV antibiotics. However they didn’t send me home with any oral antibiotics to take at home, which is an important detail. Because a few days later I got a fever and went back to the hospital. Only to find with a CT scan that the leftover bacteria had developed into two abscesses in my abdominal cavity. I was told that they were both too small to operate on and I had to be on IV antibiotics until something changed. My mom and I were awake until 3am because it took them a long time to transfer me up. Then a nurse ended up taking me the wrong way. Then a nurse was interviewing me an ungodly amount at 2am. Then *just* as I was falling asleep, I hear water spilling next to me. My mom turns on the lights and all my IV fluids and antibiotics are on the floor. We had to wait for the pharmacy to make a new batch and for a different nurse to replace it. A couple days later, I’m scanned again and it turns out one abscess got smaller and one grew. With the bigger one, they decided to stick a thick pigtail catheter in my glute to drain it. I was on a lot of pain medication so I don’t remember much. Even in the moment, everything was really hazy. I thought I was quietly muttering under my breath once I got out of the procedure but apparently I was crying bloody murder (according to my parents). I stayed a total of 8 days in the hospital until they removed the drain. They prescribed two antibiotics, one of which was Levaquin. I remember my MD aunt and uncle researching it and telling me “…They don’t make this anymore because it’s so strong, it’s borderline a poison.” And they were right, I spend another week at home finishing those antibiotics. My diet consisted of broth and gatorade and I was exhausted constantly even with bed rest. It took me a while to get back to 100% but I did it.

my apendix blew up when i was in like.. 2nd or 3rd grade. worst thing ever so far- my dad even had a heart attack in my hospital room from being so worried about me- my mom didnt know how to do cpr so just punched the heart back to beating again.. what a nice night.

The closest thing I had to appendicitis was immense pain around the midline area of the abdomen. It happened early in the morning so I had to put on clothes while experiencing unbearable pain and my parents rushed me to the hospital. By the time I got there I was vomiting a smelly, yellow liquid (not pee, smelled like what I expect half-digested food to smell like). I was sent to surgery and after the surgery the pain went away. Usually I have a fear of surgery but the pain was so bad that I didn't care, I just wanted the pain to go away or a little bit of relief.
Fun Fact: The Appendix DOES HAVE A PURPOSES, It Filters Everything Toxic That's Not Supposed To Be In Your Body

It doesn't homie XD I got my large intestine removed due to colon cancer genetic just growing loads of tiny tumors. I'm alright and well with me handling my strict diet of bread, rice, and food items that make my bowels a bit thick since large intestine makes your stool normal.

Adding more info: also astronauts get their appendix removed before going to space to avoid any serious situations since there is no doctor on board.
It more or less is a place for your gut bacteria to chill when the gut gets flushed out from diarrhea when you get sick, so your gut bio can recover quickly. The bad news is if anything harmful hunkers up in there, it can't be flushed out, triggering a strong immune response.

i had appendicitis and ate the same morning before going into the hospital, but my surgeon when he heard i was vomiting on the way in, laughed and was like "well, that solves one problem!" and i was put into surgery quickly, within about 30 minutes of being admitted and getting the C/T scan. i got lucky with the vomiting, or he said i would probably have had to wait til the morning and it couldve been painful considering how long i had waited to get to the hospital.

My dad also got an appendix infection. So went to a doctor to check it out. After that, he had to drive around delivering eggs and his appendix had exploded, and he kept driving for an hour, before he finally went to a hospital. He's alive, but damn when I thought my dad was thoughf, I didn't know he could be that thoughf. (sorry for my bad grammar)
The appendix is responsible of holding backup microorganisms in the digestive system so in the case of an infection/disease/steroids, your gut can still function after the problem is resolved.

When i got my appendicitis the pain stoped after taking a really soft medicing, so i wasn't in pain but i was in danger, i stayed like that for an entire day and then the next day My temperature was like in 40, got to the hospital on an abulance and waited the entire day (again) because they didn't think it was appendicitis. Next morning at 3am i finally got my appendix removed (which had already broke and spilled because we waited 2 days to get it removed... God bless Colombia's health system)

I was pretty lucky that my appendicitis was caught when it was. I was having a diagnostic laparoscopic surgery to look for endometriosis. They took my appendix out while doing it cuz it was inflamed

Random Fun Fact: The appendix ACTUALLY has a purpose, which is to reserve the good germs, microbes and whatnot for when something happens, the good germs can defend you. This also explains why when removing the appendix causes you to have infections more easily.
I get a lot of food poisoning symptoms when I eat eggs we have not found out. I'm allergic to eggs but if I accidentally eat them or eat something with it and I after like 5 minutes I immediately am sick

Doctor: so this right here is called the skull.
I had appendicitis and it was awful. I basically had been diagnosed with food poisoning . The next day I was sent into the ER at 11 pm .The surgery went well. The next morning I was in the ICU and it was awful. It went well.
I’m not sure where I might have heard this and I’m probably wrong, but I thought the appendix stored extra bacteria incase your gut-flora was having a bad time. Kinda like how the spleen stores a cup of blood incase of emergencies.

I remember my first surgery. Not for an appendix removal, cyst removal… from my wrist. It didn’t hurt me except when I tried to do push ups in gym class. And I remember having a vivid dream… with death. Wearing my face. And Death told me something so insightful that explained why I enjoyed my games. And then I woke up and forgot. This will haunt me forever and I can the power of modern medicine for that 😂. Didn’t know anaesthesia can cause memory loss.
Appendix was originally there for when we used to eat raw meat during the early age of man the bacteria in it was there to help break down and fight the raw meat bacteria, since we no longer eat meat raw like we used to it has become vestigial or no longer functioning

That was a theory. It’s actual purpose is a backup for the good bacteria in your gut in case the body purges itself. The issue is that because it’s a good hangout spot for good bacteria, it’s also a good place for bad bacteria to settle.

When I was in the hospital being treated for appendicitis, I came out of the operating room awake but so sedated I have absolutely no recollection of any of it. My mom was next to my hospital bed as the nurses brought me in, and they were asking me questions to check that i was all good. Apparently i was speaking in fluent german to them, I had lived in germany for less than a year and most certainly did not speak fluently. The morning after I couldnt understand a word they were saying
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that it's used as a culture for digestive bacteria. You know, the good ones that are supposed to be there. Which I guess really wouldn't be obvious. Dunno where the article was, but I recall them saying the bacteria spread out from there after the patient came off some hard core antibiotics.
