How to Calibrate Your Incubator

- If you are having a poor hatch rate it is a good idea to calibrate your incubator to make sure it is incubating at the correct temperature. In this video I walk you through how to do that.

Mr.Chris, you amaze me. I learned to calibrate thermometers in high school, so I calibrated my two for incubation in the same way. BUT I went to school at sea level & I now live at 3,028 feet, so the boiling point of HIJKLMNO (which is the emperical formula for water....you know, 'H to O'...) is now 206.4°F. Five point six degrees off! Definitely enough to harm a clutch of quail eggs. Thank you yet again, Chris! Hope your bride is recovering well. We are praying for you both.

Chicks dead in egg usually means they didnt get turned enough (usually ) lol now if you get a lot of early deaths like blood rings first 10 days that is usually temp problems
I know this is an older video, but I just watched it, so I assume others will also be watching it.
Chris tells us that we need a dial thermometer, but I tried this technique with an inexpensive digital meat thermometer after testing it's accuracy with ice water and boiling water. It was dead on, but can be recalibrated in the future, if needed. A dial thermometer will get you "pretty darned close ", but a digital thermometer will get you
"pretty darned closer"
Chris, great channel. Watched a ton of your videos to get into raising quails. Basically, I was doing the same calibration with ice and boiling water. But what I found with a large range thermometer like a meat thermometer is that it isn't accurate to a nearest degree, and so requires a biased adjustment of a few degrees. What I found that works best is an oral thermometer or any low range temperature thermometer. They are usually in the 95-105 deg-F range and therefore usually very accurate for the application of hatching egg. Basically you can verify if it's calibrated on yourself to read 98.6 deg-F. Also go for the liquid type and not the digital type so you can easily monitor it anytime. Hope this helps.

We have 2 incubators. The Little Giant seems to be off a bit. The last 2 hatchings we had with this incubator has trouble regulating the humidity. The chicks are not able to dry off, and they start to die.
The Farm Innovator seems to be fine. the humidity will get a little high but the hatching are good. We just today had 76 hatch out of 120, and were not done as yet.
So my question to you is do you know what we may be doing wrong, and how can we fix it? By the way my husband is a huge fan of yours. he always checks your postings. He say's the hatch rate has quadrupled since he started watching your video's. Thank you for helping keep him sane.

The problems with humidity could be a number of things. it could have to do wit the outside weather for example. if the humidity is high in your area at the time you are incubating you don't need to add as much water to the incubator. Also, make sure the vent plugs are removed. Remember that humidity is determined by surface area not volume so if you put a little bit of water in all of the channels that will result in higher humidity than a lot of water in only one or two of the channels. I hope that makes sense.

Hi There: Love, Love, Love all of your posts so far1 I have two different Gove's hygrometers which weren't cheap and probably not submergible, but since recently trading in my desk for a pair of boots, I probably am asking an obvious question... Is there is a better solution than taking the average of incubator and two hygrometers.......their measurements don't even agree....or should I just spend the $10 (On Amazon) even agree! Should have bought the $6 ones Important lesson, that. Again thank you for all of the information...

I have had really good luck with this incubator. I know that there are some bad reviews on it but it is has worked well for me.

Do you have a recommendation for a hydrometer or something to help with the humidity?
So I'm trying quail... Found the quail racks for my old hova Bator so I bought them. It's the stail air model.
Where's my question, should I get a tiny fan from Amazon to lay on the screen? For $10-15 I can get a 3" fan. I could also tie it to the top but my thoughts we basically to pull it out for lockdown. Also I've put nearly no thought into this other than I'm wondering if something is better than nothing and can the waffer thermostat take it either way.
I have the farm innovators 4250 and i don't seem to have a means of adjusting temp on this model.

So, I calibrated my meat style thermometer following your video, but I don’t trust the method. A friend suggested getting a medical thermometer and using that because it has to be accurate and they are regulated as to how accurate they have to be. So I got one and tested my thermometers by getting a glass of hot water, approx 100f and putting the thermometers in. Wait for them to level out, then use the medical thermometer to measure the temp, and you’ll know how far off each thermometer is. I have an outdoor glass style large easy read thermometer that I got specifically for my incubator that was practically spot on, while my ‘calibrated’ meat style thermometer was 6 degrees off!
wow. A medical thermometer is the best way for sure. I know that my meat thermometer is not 100% accurate after calibrating but I have never had one come out that far off. Thanks so for sharing your experience.
Hi Chris i have strange problem with my temperature in the incubator.. i sec cal to 0.00 and then put the temperature to 37.5c i also added a separate digital temperature display in it but the digital one is saying 38.9. how would i get the incubator to read the right temperature?
I have quail and they lay eggs too, but the egg colors are different. The most of them are just normal eggs but some of them are more brown, but is it actually a different egg? Do they taste different and especially if you want to incubate them does it say any thing about the chicks?

I think you English is fine. The egg color difference is normal and doesn't have any effect on the taste or the hatchability of the egg. I hope that answers your question.

Wont a regular murcury thermometer read accurately ?
I have the same thermometer like the one you have but I'm using a different incubator. I calibrated my thermometer like how you do it in this video. When I turned on my incubator the temperature on my incubator say 41.9 C', but on my thermometer say roughly 98-99 F'. Even though my incubator temp is too high the actual temp inside should be good? Thanks!
It sounds like it. If you are sure that your thermometer is accurate. What you described is exactly how you calibrate your incubator.
