One of my favorite transitions I discovered in reading One Piece that I was proud of discovering was when Luffy was talking with Zoro for the first time. After Luffy agreed to get Zoro's swords, he walks off and in the manga, Luffy walks to the left at the bottom of the page, prompting the reader to turn the page. It absolutely floored me the brilliance of such a simple transition.

I learned this year in class that Ukiyo-e (very famous art pieces of Japan a good few years ago) valued the importance of light lines and simplicity of colors and lines, and I can totally see now that manga's style has inherited so many rules of it.

I gotta be honest, I did not click on this video with a favorable mindset, but man was my expectations subverted. I discovered this channel today, and I've binged all the videos dissecting previous fights. What a competent way of analyzing that just oozes quality. If you ever get the time, I would love to see an analysis of the Luffy v. Blueno fight. There's just visually something about that fight, and the way it presents Gear 2nd that has had me captured ever since I read it as a kid, and I cannot put my finger on what it is that makes it so great for me. Keep making amazing videos, I will be here for every single one you'll drop in the future

I haven't watched one piece in over five years, I haven't read regularly in about 3, but I completely agree. It still stands as one of the greatest pieces of comic book art and storytelling in my opinion. It breaks down what I see as the stereotypical masculine archetype and allows someone to achieve peace, finally letting someone else take over for a change. Beautiful.

Have you read many other comic books/manga? I agree with storytelling but in terms of fights, One Piece is among the worst. And the art is also kinda 🤨 compared to... everything else in the genre.

I love what you've done in this video. Manga art isn't only cool shots and double spread pages. It's mainly paneling and guiding eyes, everything else is just a skin.
First time I learned about this, was by totally not mark when he talks about dragon ball and shows how Akira toriyama use manga. I was impresed, that smoething i read many times has even more deep tham just drawing. Since then i started to read manga "properly" and thanks to this a fall in love in manga even more.

Theres so much to the final panels but one thing that stood out to me is how luffy was framed beneath Katakuri.
Katakuri on the right was the first thing i see, but while looking at him, you can't avoid seeing his massive overwhelming attack
Spikes represent Katakuri's personality like you mentioned and it also just looks painful to be hit by
Beneath that massive attack is luffy, tiny in comparison. But however small luffy is he makes a big impact
The arm that stretches around shows how no matter the danger ahead of him, he keeps pushing forwards. Thats why we finish with his attack leading into Katakuri
His fist isn't even clenched full because of his exhaustion in this fight, same as Katakuri's posture shows how desperate he is for this attack to finish luffy
But despite that, the Punch is framed with a fair bit of distance to go however it feels fast and like its gonna hit just as hard as Katakuri's attack
I think it feels so powerful (to me) because the punch is lined up with how a punch is thrown when luffy punches full power (like the celestial dragon) even with the redirections of g4, it still finishes almost perfectly in line with the shoulder
They don't even try to dodge either attack because they know they cannot, this is the final push they can both give.
I think to an even larger scale, this reflects a ton about their personality's, And even luffy's role in the story
Katakuri is spikey and towers over everyone being the embodiment of power and perfection to his siblings, he crushes anything that is a problem and never lets his true feelings show.
Luffy is the underdog, easily squished and small in comparison. but he never gives up and always goes straight for the villain whenever he can
In the story, Luffy is one man. Hes short and not scary at all. But depsite that, luffy's actions speak for him, even being small he makes such a big impact on people
(him saving people, inspiring others and creating a crew. He changes the world every time he acts and the world government see him as a massive threat)
    Just my interpretation anyway ^^
(you've made me realise just how much thought is behind the panels oda draws and it realy shows just how good he is)

tbh i think Morj is underrated for this stuff these days. a lot of people just expect chapter reviews and theories from him now, but he was the one who first made thematic analysis of one piece BIG on youtube. his video on the themes of Whole Cake Island changed the game when it first came out; so much of the community was considering it a weaker arc, and Morj came out and made it clear just how thematically rich and well-designed it was. the video might be five years old now but it's absolutely worth going back to.
Craftsdwarf doesn't post that often and doesn't post only about OP, but a lot of his older videos on OP dig pretty deep into it in cool ways too. though i sometimes disagree with how he looks at it, he brings a great perspective.

The cool things aboit this fights is that we know the limits of the fighters and is entertaining seeing them trying to break through their limits using their ideals to beat their opponents. Thats why even though g5 is funny i really cant find those fights as entertaining as before. Because luffy now has no limits

I liked the video after going through rule no.1, easy to understand and make a lot of sense. Now I will proceed to watch the rest of the video. Luffy vs Katakuri is also my favorite fight in One Piece, due to the mirroring and thematic importance for the arc and for both of these characters, but I've never thought about the paneling.

RUclips recommendations are awful. Except when you get the odd diamond.
The rules that you have covered are extremely useful to know in other forms of art. Not all of them translate directly or at all however these rules are all still useful. There are so many guides that talk about leading lines, contrast, flow, framing, etc. But they honestly don't come close to how you've been able to highlight them. This is getting recommended and I might even use it as a source if I ever get around to making my next set of guides.
To be honest I couldn't read One Piece when I first tried as I hadn't got use to the flow of manga. I'm going to try again as I really want to be able to experience chapters like this.
