- Calgary, Alberta, CANADA - 1988 Winter Games, Ladies' Short Program - Jill Trenary of the United States remained in 5th Place when her gamble to attempt the 2nd most difficult combination jump pass of the night did not pay off as she was not able to perform it smoothly.
Isn’t that the same music at the beginning as Liz Manley at the same competition? I guess the two ‘Carmen’ performances weren’t the only double act!
I was so disappointed that you didn’t get another chance at the Olympics. You were something to see.
Jill is such a beautiful skater! I also love the excitement these great commentators - Dick and Jim - produce with their insight and fascination for the sport. Thank you all for making the eighties such a special era!
The technical marks are insane. She did amazing!
Pre-1989, judges would scrutinize every move and a deduction would be made if a landing was not done perfectly. She was a little off in the landing of the flip that made the entry into the double loop a little off. That was enough to garner a 0.2 deduction. Her final combination spin also traveled a bit and should have incurred a 0.1 deduction.
If you look closely at the combo, Jill landed the triple flip on one foot, but she did bang her blade on the ice when taking off for the double loop.
Skating and 80s hair at their finest.
@skaterdude1962 IMO, I actually though Midori Ito's double loop-triple loop was the most difficult combination.
Their double axels were all huge in the 80's!
That is good technique.
Sally Stapleford the British judge actually marked this fairly, although I've had to watch this so many times, it's taken me 28 years, to see how. If you look really carefully, Jill catches her free foot as she goes up on the loop in the combination, and the change camel is short by 1.5 revs on the back foot. Therefore there would be .2 off for the foot down and .1 off for the spin (5.7 - 0.3 =5.4). She then did give her 5.9 for presentation. It was perhaps the most sparkling programme of the night.
Since it was a triple flip combination the technical base mark should be 5.8 or 5.9 so 5.4 is still not appropriate even then. She was wrongly marked due to her lack of name and being 3rd American. While Witt got showed with marks for mediocrity and easier techincal elements.
Third American? She qualified second in Olympic trials/National Championships earlier that year. Lack of name? She was US National Champion the previous year.
@@russianskatingfan she was undermarked for sure
@@grantnoroyan4083 It helps to be coached by Juetta Mueller which explains many of the marks Witt and Poetzsch and Hoffmann and others coached by her over the years. Granted Witt was a way better skater than Poetzsch of course, but she still got held up at times. Even worse than the short here was the short of the 87 worlds which was one of her worst performances I saw, and she still won the short somehow.
Interesting Fassi did not seem to have much political pull anymore as his skaters- Kadavy, Trenary, Bobek, a few male skaters, were never overmarked, even a bit undermarked at times. So it seems he had lost his previous power behind the scenes. Even Emi Watanabe was not marked generously compared to bigger names like Poetzsch, Fratianne, Lurz, and others, and Cousins was never overmarked and hard done by (particularly in figures) at times. Curry was undermarked often before the 76 Olympics. So even by 1975-1980 he did not have the kind of power and clout he had in the late 60s and early 70s anymore. And by the late 80s and 90s it was completely gone right up to his death.
@@dougierichardson484 In my view poetch was a horrible freeskater excellent in figures but politically jutta mueller was popular she had her daughter gaby seifert and then poetch and hoffman and then witt i think there was a big push for poetch in lake placid and dortmond in 1980 mostly because of jutta mueller but in my view and that of the great sandra bezic who put it perfectly saying'' katarina witt was NEVER the best skater but she was ALWAYS the best competitor! that stuck with me for many years and i agree 100 percent so my view is jutta mueller was powerful in the 70s and 80s and i think poetch was pushed but i agree katerina witt was the best COMPETITOR and NEVER the best skater!!!! :)
@mjcamck71 If you're talking about her trademark one-foot Axel - triple Salchow combination, Nicole Bobek did the same combination in the 1994-95 season (prior to that she worked on a one-foot Axel - double Salchow combination). Probably a by-product of the two being coached by the great Carlo Fassi.
Beautifully done!!! Who would have thought that 25 years later Jill would not be able to keep up with these younger skinner skaters they have now. Figure skating has turned into gymnastics.
There's nothing wrong with being skinny?
that was a fun performance to watch... she enjoyed herself
They should take a panel of judges and re-judge this ladies event under today's point system.
Why? 🙄
This was scored correctly, but kadavy was robbed
5.9s in artistic for a skater ranked 7th in the world? I think not. Kadavy was underscored, but part of that was because she skated in the second to last group.
@@renzy79 Based on FREE skating only , she was ranked 4th or 5th. KAdavy was ranked third in the world overall
@@metsdudenj
I was referring to Trenary's ranking not Kadavy's which is why those 5.9s made no sense.
My other point was that Kadavy's marks were hindered by compulsory placement because that would put her in the penultimate group.
@@renzy79 Kadavy actually skated in the final group for the SP, just after Thomas. They had 8 skaters per flight in the short here.
@@ronaround74
8 skaters! That's a lot. I was unaware of that. Thank you.
Oksana Baiul has said Jill was her idol. :)
@mjcamck71 She added the extra revolution for Worlds. She landed the combination in the Qualifying Round but fell on it in the actual Free Skate.
"qualifying round"?
She was my favorite pre-Oksana and Sasha. :)
She was the 80's queen
Man I thought step sequences were a more recent phenomenon because they kind of disappeared in the 90s and early 2000s but I guess they were a big thing in the 80s. Maybe because there was less emphasis than hitting all those triples. Praise Mao Asada for bringing the step sequence back.
No, the step sequence has always been a requirement in programs every year, and 2 sets were required. Over the years, one set was modified into a "moves in the field" sequence (spirals, Ina Bauers, spread eagles, etc.)
she touched down before taking off... thats not a true loop take-off.... and seeing as how that was the required jump in the combination no wonder they took a deduction....
Would have preferred her to stick around over the new trend, Nancy Kerrigan
The technical marks were BS. Ridiculous.
What's the name of her music selection?
Suite from Irma LaDuce
Tyrone Branch dis-donc, dis-donc from Irma La Douce composed by André Previn.
3F looked two-feeted for some of judges.
but still significant.
0:25からのCBで左フリーレグを氷面にこすって両足着氷を取られた感。
特に米ジャッジ5.5 ♪2:48それにしても
the marks were very generous. the combo was hugely 2-footed and the combination spin was very rocky. such a consistently over-rated skater.
Lol
lol there was nothing that was 2 footed get some glasses
sit position was always a problem for her
Back when judges picked shit skaters to win no matter how bad they were. How lucky Katarina was in those days. OK, she wasn't shit but not the best either. Off balance on a triple flip being way harder than a sleepy toe.
why were her technical scores so low?
she hit everything and had the hardest combination in the short program.
Jill's jump combination was sloppy. What she produced here would have the modern equivalent of a negative GOE. This era was about executing the elements with perfection or the judges would nail you. What truly disturbed me was not Trenary's scores, but Kadavy's technical marks. She was flawless and should have been marked above Witt and Manley.
+renzy79 Agree. Kadavy deserved a win in that SP.
YES YES YES. Kadavy's SP was exquisite. How the hell Witt won the SP is beyond comprehension.
I think her free leg tapped the ice before going up for the loop in the combo. Or at least some judges thought it did and marked her down.
Justin Scott that’s exactly right. If you play in slo-mo, you can see at the beginning of the second jump that the blade of her left free leg in front of her take off edge skimmed the ice. Agreed with everyone else that Kadavy’s program was under marked and that Witt was being held up by the judges. Manley should have placed lower. She went for an easier salchow and the landing was poor. Plus her camel was wobbly.
I dont agree. Thomas and Kadavy did combinations almost as difficult and much better performed, so theirs were better.
I agree, that combo was excellent.. maybe a .1 deduction. Second best combo in the competition, after Ito of course.
Triple Flip/Double Toe was clean enough to garner all 5.7s
Jill should have won the short, by a mile! Shame on the corrupt judging.
Horrible music
@proxy22 I am not sure if she touched down, but the foot did kinda cheat the take off a little and it seemed to have an almost salchow take off as opposed to the loop take off, it was off center and somewhat shaky. It deserved a ,2 deduction, but her base mark for techincal should have been 5.7 to start off given the difficulty
There was absolutely no personality, no connection to the audience, nothing at all. Compare this performance to Elizabeth Manley who skated to the same music in her free skate in the same competition and lit up the ice with her performance. The commentators were giddy over this performance, but it certainly was national bias. Trenary was horrible and the artistic impression marks were the gift of the century
"absolutely no personality, no connection to the audience, nothing at all". LMAO! Back away from the bong.
Galileocan g Are you kidding? Liz Manly skated her best but did not have the elegance or refinement. Jill skated with arched back, perfect arm and hand positions, pointed toes, and bang on musical timing.
Two or more skaters using the same music in their programs; at least they're not skating to music from the Nutcracker suite. I don't have anything against the Nutcracker suite, it's one of the most frequently used music in skaters' programs, especially in lower levels of competition (no-test, pre-preliminary, preliminary, and pre-juvenile).
Lauri Bricker , Jill skated to The Nutcracker Suite in the Long Program...
I agree,,,very average skater.
Cheated
