+Charley Deppner I agree. I discovered this movie a couple years back as I was only 3 when it came out. I found it on a list of movies that promised sequels yet didn't happen. I love the ending the most, just because it is pure 80's bliss, and it brings me to my childhood again.
One of my favourite too. I would give lots to have the actual music instead of "inspired by" rip-offs. I can't count the number of times I've listened to this and smiled every time.
This movie filled me with dreams in 1984. We sat in the theater through the credits, which surprised me and was pure euphoria. I wish studios made movies like this now.
Euphoria, yes! That's the perfect word. I also saw it in 1984, and as soon as the end credits finished I turned to my buddy and asked: "So when is the sequel?" If ever there was a movie that NEEDED a sequel, this was it. *sigh* What a great movie.
Yes - the only other 80s movies I remember sitting through end credits was Tron (to see the credits written in Japanese) and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. 😀
I will go for years without thinking about this movie, then I catch myself whistling this tune and it's stuck for days... Thank you Michael Boddicker, for this wonderfully incredible ear worm.
I love everything about this ... the music, the cool swagger of the team, the sexy strut of Ellen Barkin, the close-up of Buckaroo's feet before he does a little hop-step, the lectroid's funky feet, Jeff Goldblum's shit-eating grin ... Just makes me smile from ear to ear.
It has a bittersweet feel to it. Kinda like you meet someone cool and special as your passing through, but then you have to leave, boing you probably won't ever see them again. In short, happy you met them, but your sad to leave them.
I freaking love that smile on Goldblum's face at 1:50. There's a whole story in that smile. He's thinking, "Wow, this movie was weird but, ya know, I had a blast making it." Or maybe it's just Goldblum being Goldblum.
Every interview I read from an actor in this has said pretty much the same thing: they have no idea what the movie’s about, but it was a ton of fun to make.
What amuses me is that the ending credits song wasn't finished yet when they filmed the scene, but the composer knew what the beat was going to be and had a song in mind for them to match their steps to for filming. Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl". That's what they're marching to.
Just watched this movie tonight for the first time since 1984, I was 6/7 back then, what a memory. Everything about this is movie is unique, they don't make films like that anymore.
I remember the cast of walking dead trying to do something similar but it looked pathetic. Most of the actors had weak composure, knock knees and pigeon feet. Didn't look awesome at all. And I'm talking about the living survivors, not the zombies.
+Stephen Velez Came here after overhearing Lithgow's voiceover for some commercial. Glad to hear I wasn't the only one fascinated by the credits (and theme, and movie). I came here because apparently The Life Aquatic end credits drew inspiration from this scene! And oh my goddess both endings are both absolutely perfect, garnished with an even more perfectly confused Jeff Goldblum trotting along with the group
Peter Weller is one of the few Americans I felt who would have made a perfect Doctor in Doctor Who. To be fair, my list of fellow Brits is pretty short too.
When the cast was marching down the streets a truck was following them and supposed to blast out the ending music. But the theme hadn't been finished yet, so the director decided to use a song that was close to what they were planning to use. They blasted out Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl" instead. You can see how the cast reacts: Some try to ignore it, others seem amused by it, a few (like the little kid) just think what the heck and groove LOL
I wonder if the creators of Cowboy Bebop got the idea for Spike’s wardrobe from Buckaroo? Because the Hong Kong Cavalier would fit right in the CB universe.
I feel like it represents the good half of the species pretty well, in a sort of _we have no idea what's happening but we're all here for the ride and it's a pretty good time_ sort of way.
This is *literally* the only thing about this movie I remember at this point. I can't even recall what the plot was about anymore, but I will never forget these ending credits.
When a couple of doctors figured out how to pass through solid matter (Banzai and Lizardo) - they encountered aliens from the 8th dimension that tried to take over the world. It was up to Team Banzai to stop them. Simple plot, honestly. But the alien Rastafarians were not happy with those 8th dimension aliens being in our dimension, so they (the Rastafarian aliens) vow to destroy Earth to stop them if necessary. So there's a lot of pressure on Dr. Banzai.
I remember interviewing Dr. Banzai on my community cable station. It was just after Hanoi Xian’s trial, and Pecos was still missing. Buckaroo couldn’t have been more gracious. Even when his world was falling apart… He was still thinking of us.
First saw this flick in 1986 when Fox only aired movies in the week nights. The movie is a all-over the place sci-fi comedy but it is very enjoyable and loved it more as I got older. This is the best closing title ever as it does look like a MV. Man this is old now as everybody in the movie dresses in the New Wave 80s style only Duran Duran or the Human League could pull off!
So wanted to see the sequel. But then the movie bombed at the box office - so no sequel. But later became a true cult classic in the video rental market. I had friends showing this on movie nights throughout the 80s. Great ending song - and a very original film.
Nowadays when you see this on TV they don’t show the ending credits like they use to, they go half screen, turn down the sound, speed up the credits and play an advertisement. It was playing tonight on MGMHD so I came here for my fix.
Is the costume choice ever explained in the film? Not really. And I love that aspect. These are all normal ways of doing things in that world it seems.

I love Perfect Tommy's costume change. I found out later that it was intentional, but it's just the sort of odd, pointless thing that this movie did so well.
Can't help myself...loved, loved, loved this movie as a teen. My best friend and I went to it and we never laughed so hard. If you have never watched it, watch it. God how I miss the 80s. Oh to be young again:)
THIS SEQUENCE IS THE EPITOME OF COOL! Wish I had been at the New Beverly Theatre Monday night when they did the screening with Peter Weller. Buckaroo is one of my all time favorite films!
Came here after overhearing Lithgow's voiceover for some commercial. Glad to hear I wasn't the only one with a crush on the closing credits. The whole thing from music to camera work to the walking gives me a lump in my throat. Don't know why I love this movie (and it's end credits) so much but I just do.
When I see stuff like this on RUclips, man, the goosebumps. Not because it was a great movie, it was very campy, but because I was only 17 years old in 1984 and movies like these were really fun to watch. No stress in my life, absolutely nothing to worry about. I miss those days of youth.
For some reason, I also love this ending seen and music; and yes, it makes me happy. In fact this is my favorite part of the movie. Since I can't whistle, I try to sing along. I realize that there are no words but I try anyway.
Whenever I've had a really shitty day I play this at 0:28 and think of the good old days.. When things were nice, no mobile phones, no social media ( I know i'm being sarcastic but hey), no pressure, great music, great movies.. Man I miss the 80's growing up as a teenager
DEFINITELY... I would shout "YESSSSSSSSSSZSSSS! !!!!!" in the theater... in April ... if the credits are THE MCU version of this with the SAME music..... I could see resurrected Star Lord / Peter Quill putting a Buckaroo Bonzai soundtrack cassette tape into a player synced with ALL the speakers in the area.... & Cap and Tony " trading " off leading everyone... etc....
I finally get what Emdall meant by "So What Big Deal." He's saying so what if Penny's resurrection is a Deus Ex Machina it's a fun movie and it doesn't ruin it.
Little trivia fact: the credits scene was filmed with the cast walking to 'Uptown Girl' being played, as it was the same tempo as the end credits song (which I believe hadn't been finished yet, which is why they used 'Uptown Girl').
+53rdAndThird They were. Wes Anderson is a huge fan of BB. In the director's commentary for TLASZ, Anderson says quite openly that the end credits sequence was “inspired by, if not outright stolen from, Buckaroo Banzai".

Cause remember...No matter where you go..... There you are
The deuce you say!?
Whoever did the sounds for this movie deserves a medal. Hell.... 100 medals!!!
Will always love Buckaroo Banzai and the Kong Hong Cavaliers! #BlueBlazeIrregular4Ever
When I saw "Drive" with Ryan Gosling the first 80s reference and vibe it gave off was Buckaroo Banzai
I listen to this over and over. I hope it never becomes unavailable. Thank you.
Ugh one of my all time favs! Today at random my pops sent me a text of a scene in this movie. Thank for the great memories!
1:53 Jeff Goldblum says to himself, "Now this is a Jeff Goldblum kinda ending..."
When I see stuff like this on RUclips, man, the goosebumps. Not because it was a great movie, it was very campy, but because I was only 17 years old in 1984 and movies like these were really fun to watch. No stress in my life, absolutely nothing to worry about. I miss those days of youth.
It's on Tubi
@@markpierce4416 Yup. I've seen it on Tubi.
Happy 40th anniversary to Buckaroo Banzai!
When the end credits is an essential part of the movie -- but purely for the sheer joy of it
For some reason, I also love this ending seen and music; and yes, it makes me happy.
The cast of the avengers need to do this scene
DEFINITELY... I would shout "YESSSSSSSSSSZSSSS! !!!!!" in the theater... in April ... if the credits are THE MCU version of this with the SAME music..... I could see resurrected Star Lord / Peter Quill putting a Buckaroo Bonzai soundtrack cassette tape into a player synced with ALL the speakers in the area.... & Cap and Tony " trading " off leading everyone... etc....
Tony would insist on being Perfect Tommy
Nightcore Subliminals nah he’s Buckaroo Banzai
So much good came out of 1984. This movie never fails to be fun and put a smile on my face...ESPECIALLY the end credits.
Check out the cool, no-look low five between Rawhide and Buckaroo at 1:15.
"Hey, Tommy, how'd you change your clothes so fast?"
"Because I'm perfect."
Who else came to watch this because of The Weekly Planet? Thanks a lot, Mr. Sunday Movies!
I love how Scooter and his Dad are wearing matching outfits.
Also, I just noticed that Perfect Tommy's outfit changes at the end.
I finally get what Emdall meant by "So What Big Deal." He's saying so what if Penny's resurrection is a Deus Ex Machina it's a fun movie and it doesn't ruin it.
Almost the 40th anniversary of waiting for Buckaroo Banzai against the World Crime League. Maybe next year! :)
And give her your coat. Why me? Because you're perfect. You have a point there.
Little trivia fact: the credits scene was filmed with the cast walking to 'Uptown Girl' being played, as it was the same tempo as the end credits song (which I believe hadn't been finished yet, which is why they used 'Uptown Girl').
I think that the end credits for The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou were inspired by these end credits!
+53rdAndThird They were. Wes Anderson is a huge fan of BB. In the director's commentary for TLASZ, Anderson says quite openly that the end credits sequence was “inspired by, if not outright stolen from, Buckaroo Banzai".
+KingKaitain ~ Whoa, that's great to know! And I was just speculating!
yes. they said so directly it was for the homage to this movie :)
And, of course, Jeff Goldblum is in both.
