This is gonna be Christopher Nolan’s most divisive film he’s made so more. I saw this film with my dad who usually hates these kinds of films, despite me telling him not the fucking come because he won’t like it but he did, and he hated how loud, Long, and Confusing it was. For me personally I have no idea my opinion. It looks great, Sounds Great, Has some really good action, holy fuck he blew up a actual 247 plane, Holy fuck what is happening. But there’s also some moments during the movie and particularly the first 30 minutes where the editing feels like it was very over edited.

@@nathanschroeder9104 This is different. The part of the film I'm talking about was far too swift. A couple of times JDW was in one place then all of a sudden he was in another without us seeing how he got there. Dunkirk for the most part showed everything it needed to show, especially given how two of the main narratives took place over a short period of time. In Tenet I momentarily wondered if stuff was missing, but I realised that the stuff we didn't see would not have been necessary to include, so I get why they felt the need to not show it.
Just watched this last night in Canadian Theatres and it was such a spectacle. In terms of audio I believe that it was probably(?) the theatre's doing? The soundtrack FEELS like it needs to be approaching concert levels with how much presence it brings, and leaves the dialogue at a perfect volume IMHO. One thing I feel like you didn't address but always brings me back to Nolan films is the way he writes these mind-bending sci-fi concepts in a way where its not painfully explained in dialogue... Something that even marvel movies are guilty of. It makes you feel so much more immersed in the experience when they don't include the exposition character.
Absolutely no problem with the sound, people just love to hate on Nolan. Loved how John DW said in an interview people should just sit back and enjoy it first, then go back and try understand it.
I saw Tenet at a drive-in theater so I could just turn my radio up whenever I couldn't hear dialogue, not the best sound quality but I loved every second of it
The music was also super loud during my projection. I think it was meant to. I was really disturbed for the first 30 min but then I didn't notice anymore.
I've come to the conclusion Nolan's TENET is basically Magic Eye the movie. The movie slowly comes into focus as you sit back with it for a few minutes. It doesn't take much more time than that but the picture you finally see is fucking Brilliant! It truly is the first puzzle movie if you think about it.
One thing I felt Nolan should have done better was the transition scene. For example, one moment the protagonist would be in Tallinn and then he would just show up in Italy. I’m basically saying that it didn’t feel natural, but Inception did a better job the location transitions. Overall I really enjoyed the movie 8/10
Just saw it in New Zealand and the audio was exactly as you described it. But I believe the cinema I visited tried to compensate for the dialogue audio by turning the whole thing UP, leaving the audio at a usual audible level whilst the score and remaining sound were almost too loud! But in all fairness, this was completely complementary to entire experience of the film.
I've just came out from cinema 30 mins ago and it is the first day of the UK release. I don't know whether it's just me or what, the music and explosion and background sound is just too loud. In the third act I have to cover my ear a few times in the cinema. The concept is really cool, but I think the pace or the overall structure of explaining things/concept could be better. It's like you're half confused the entire film. You're trying to figure out sth and when you think you sort of get it, the story throw you more even more complicated concept which you ended up being confused again. I give it a 7/10
this might be the best review i’ve seen yet of tenet and btw the sound compared to the dialogue was loud as hell too where i watched. i think it’s definitely nolan’s intention to keep us focused on the movie.
I did have problem hearing the characters in my screening in Ireland. Which was in IMAX, it was the best conditions I could see the film in. I honestly think the sound design and score being louder than the dialogue is intentional. Nolan really doesn’t want you to think to hard about anything. He just wants you to be on for the ride. He’s done that with other films before (bane and a lot of coop in interstellar). That’s just what I thought, though I know a lot of people would find that annoying

In the US and got to see this at a drive-in theater! Had similar issues but I definitely enjoyed the film. Will have to rewatch due to the audio and generally confusing uses of inversion.
I’ve seen a lot of people saying the same thing about the sound mix. I definitely noticed but I had more problem with the dialogue being too fast or too much information at once. But overall I got it
Damnnnn watchinf this movie is like going into an exam thinking you'll ace it, until you reach the half way and realize that you've been doing it all wrong.😂 Love every single minute it tortures my brain tho!
I came across the same problem with the dialogue and soundtrack. I’ve noticed that the sound/soundtrack can be loud when compared to dialogue in other Christopher Nolan films, but it’s never been this bad before. Other than that though, the film was still fantastic.
I kinda knew the twist with the airport fight scene, but I think cause of how it was shot and created really didn’t make me care. These action sequences almost remind me of how revolutionary The Matrix was with its action scenes, it’s on the same level and scope!
I’ve been thinking about how to approach this review on Tenet without giving the impression of bashing the movie or hating on it. Cause I did like this movie but I certainly have a lot to say. Let’s start with this, I was like everyone else with Tenet. I was super excited, who wouldn’t be! Christopher Nolan directing, big budget summer blockbuster, with a complex plot, awesome trailer and a great cast! I’ve been waiting for this movie for a long time and as soon as I found a showtime for my city I decided I had to go. So I saw Tenet and I have to say, this is a Christopher Nolan movie. It has his style of direction all over it. The complex and dense plot, big action spectacles and a long runtime. Will people like it, most likely unfortunate for me not so much. What really bothered me about this movie was the plot and how Nolan told this story. It didn’t feel cohesive or even understandable really but rather very confusing, rushed and the outcome of it all made me question what was the purpose of all that just happened. Even some of the plot points of this movie that kinda make sense doesn’t actually do. Like I didn’t really know much about the villain or his goals and there wasn’t enough character development to him other than a cliche evil plan, him being just a jerk but the actor who portrays him did a good job. The acting of this character gave an impression of unintentionally being funny and entertaining. But a lot of this movie felt like it was trying to be an extravaganza of action scenes, set pieces and dazzling spectacles. Luckily It does accomplish that though, a lot of the times. The action is really well done and does a lot of the spectacles. I just wish that the movie presented a more compelling story, because it felt as though it was kinda trying too. The story, plotting and even sometimes the screenplay felt so jumbled throughout the entire runtime. It tries to be so intellectual and complex but at the end it didn’t succeed at it. Overall Tenet wasn’t as great as I hoped for but, big and sometimes fun action scenes, good acting, sound design, and the look of the movie are all positives for Tenet. Maybe I just wasn’t smart enough to appreciate all this movie had to offer and that’s unfortunate, but I did have some fun with Tenet and think most people will enjoy it.
When I saw it in America, it was really hard to hear/understand what the characters were saying. It seemed like it was just bc the theater had the volume out of Wack but it’s weird how everyone has had the same problem!
7:26 thank you, thought I was the only one. The dialogue was also very unclear as well. When I watched this, I couldn't hear any dialogue, also the fact that I had norwegian subtitles made things super confusing mixing languages... AND NOT TO MENTION THE FUCKING PLOT. SAFE TO SAY I UNDERSTOOD FUCK ALL IN THIS MOVIE.
I saw the movie 2 hrs ago and the sound was the same as you described it. I was invested and loved the movie but I feel like I missed some key moments due to the sound mixing. Still was a hell of an experience in IMAX
I had the same situation in my theatre the score OVERPOWERED the dialogue and I couldn’t fucking understand what anyone was saying for a good chunk of the film. Loved it tho
I'm from the UK and also had issues hearing the dialogue over the score. This has happened a lot in Nolan's recent movies, so it must be some sort of stylistic choice
I wouldn't say I had an issue with the sound mixing drowning out dialogue when I saw the movie. But let's just say this... It's mixed aggresevly! There's no way you would fall a sleep watching this in the cinema. The action is just bang on in your face (sound wise). The movie is a masterpiece. But it needs way more viewings than just one to really grasp everything that's going on. The movie never takes a pause. So the information you're being given is just piling up. Awesome movie though!
Regarding the sound mixing. Here in Germany it was the same. Saw it in English with subtitles which normally annoy me but with this film I appreciated them a lot :D Interstellar had and has the same issues for me. Hans Zimmers Organ is just way to loud to understand anything... Why does Nolan do this to us???
I saw it at an Australian preview screening also. The audio levelling was definitely an issue, particularly in scenes with that staccato synth-bass score entering the third act, but Ludwig's score was such a highlight for me that it didn't bother me on a first watch. I imagine on a rewatch it would bother me more.

@akshay satish well, some cinemas, especially in bigger cities, show the original without subtitles. But yes, sadly most cinemas in Germany only show dubbed versions.
Watched it in the Netherlands. Loud as hell (blew my ears out) and i notified the score a sometimes drowning out the dialogue. Maybe it was his way of giving the audience to feel it rather than understand it....:-)

Only if you can hear what they're saying.
In the US and got to see this at a drive-in theater! Had similar issues but I definitely enjoyed the film. Will have to rewatch due to the audio and generally confusing uses of inversion.
5:58-6:08 hahaha holy shit man that part was genius!!!
That scene where they go back in time and prevent Al Pacino from killing his partner in insomnia blew my mind!
A truly baller move from C-Dot-Nolan
Yeah and i didnt see coming how his partner then went on to kill batmans parents.
My theatre also had low volume dialogue.
I'm from Spain and I almost end up deaf after watching the movie Ü
Good video! I agree with you in everything!
You should have started the video with "thank you for watching"
ok but real questions, is it true that they set up Robert Pattinson as The Batman in the end scene?
Yes. The last scene showcases the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne
Dialogue was indeed quieter and softer than the other non-dialogue scenes here in Singapore cinemas too.
When I saw it in America, it was really hard to hear/understand what the characters were saying. It seemed like it was just bc the theater had the volume out of Wack but it’s weird how everyone has had the same problem!
Just come back from this movie, biggest mindfuck of my life
7:26 thank you, thought I was the only one.
Did you just spoiled me the actual finale o you were kidding? 😬
Was he kidding????
Don’t worry he’s kidding
Michael T. Paulo thank god, I just watched it, what a movie, amazing
W3hO it really is amazing, I saw it earlier today and the first thing I did afterwards was watch videos about it nonstop
In germany i had the same issue with the sound. Still understood everything tho
Thank you for finally saying what critics are afraid to. I can’t wait to see TENET in theatres.
Like the hair the bro, look almost like a whole different person
Awesome movie though!
missed your vids man
6:00 and even the MCU and MI movies understand that there will be dramatic, tragic, heartfelt and intense moments. And then they go for the jokes.
She's an abused spouse. These people exist. Whats wrong with showing it in a film. Did you want her to turn into wonder woman half way through.
great review 🔥
Thanks, champ
Had audio problems in the US. Wisconsin to be specific.
Regarding the sound mixing. Here in Germany it was the same. Saw it in English with subtitles which normally annoy me but with this film I appreciated them a lot :D
Interstellar had and has the same issues for me.
I walked out of class to watch this! thanks roby!
Hopefully it is worth it
How you walk our classes literaly there no schools cuz of pandermic
@@gensischosen251 what country are you in? U.S. schools are open. I had a summer session in july/august and fall starts on monday. on campus.
the machines shall rise I lived in Phillippines literally The whole country wont have Face to Face classes whole a year until 2021 July but we have online classes
@@gensischosen251 I gotcha. yea, we're doing things a lil bit different here. some schools have the option for online, on campus or a mix of the two. what I have to take i can't imagine doing online.
Yep, sound was fucked for me too.
Did you see it in Australia?
@@RobyFN2169dtf yeah, Canberra.
JohnGudmann shit. That’s not too good.
@@RobyFN2169dtf it's really unfortunate. Visually it's a fantastic theatre experience, but had I known I wouldn't be able to understand half of what was said, I'd almost prefer to watch at home with subtitles.
About your audio issues, i can't relate. Over here in the Netherlands it sounded great in my local film house.
I gotta be honest, I saw it again a few nights ago, at the same theatre, and there were no issues. It’s a weird one
I saw Tenet a couple days ago, I live in the US, and the film was definitely too loud. I couldn't understand half of the plot unfortunately over the loud score and explosions 😔
My brother kept turning to me as well and trying to ask me what was going on.
Yes! watched it in Germany and had so much difficulty understanding what the characters said. Really frustrating especially as a non native speaker
@akshay satish well, some cinemas, especially in bigger cities, show the original without subtitles. But yes, sadly most cinemas in Germany only show dubbed versions.
I had the same problem with sound and dialogue in my screening in the UK. But I’m hard of hearing so I assumed it was just me.
Watched it in the Netherlands. Loud as hell (blew my ears out) and i notified the score a sometimes drowning out the dialogue. Maybe it was his way of giving the audience to feel it rather than understand it....:-)
@akshay satish Whether or not this was a deliberate choice doesn't diminish the fact that its a great film. Personally, i hope that all his films does well in the box office. You cannot deny that he brings intrigue, ambition and originality to his work so i hope he continues his success so he can make more great films.
i saw it in IMAX and DAMN was it too loud. i had a headache watching it, so i watched it again with ear plugs
Defininitely audio mixing issues. Same thing happened in cineworld UK.
Yeah the music was also much louder than the dialogue gor me too
The sound being loud was a thing when I saw it as well. Might be mixing, might be the particular cut/distrubuted version
Yeah the sound mixing was bad for everyone
Ellen looks weird here
hey hey hey... I don’t have any employees to not treat well
No... but it's definitely his best by a country fucking mile!
No joke, are there ACTUAL SPOILERS OR NOT??!!! cuz that "let's take some major fuckin' spoilers here" part genuinely angers me... coming from a subscriber who loves your previous video essays such as Bad Times and Daredevil...
It’s a joke haha
Another reviewer said the sound mixing is poor. So it's not just you.
Inception, although very complicated, was still understandable. How are the audience going to enjoy a movie they cannot fully understand?
