    When Jones got hurt they tried to use AJ Dillon the same way as if he was Jones and it really killed his numbers last year. They tried to do all these outside runs that had him going east/west and he just doesn't have the speed for that like Jones did to pull that off. Once they started using him on just North/South running and in the passing game he started doing a lot better towards the end of the year before Jones came back ... he is really good in the passing game when he gets a little open space/steam to him and maybe a couple blockers.

    With a roster exemption for defensive end Kenneth Odumegwu, the Packers are permitted to have 91 players on their offseason roster. However, over the last few weeks they’ve been carrying just 90 players after releasing defensive tackle Rodney Matthews. This is a roster spot that will inevitably get filled prior to training camp, which begins July 22nd. As our General Manager Brian Gutekunst has said in the past, roster building in the NFL is a 365 day a year job. With $30.07 million in available cap space, a portion of which go towards Jordan Love’s eventual extension, the Packers have the means to explore what’s left of the free agent market. However, the bulk of the best remaining free agent options are either cornerbacks or safeties, which aren’t needs for the Packers. There also isn’t a glaring weakness on the roster that has to be filled either. So my guess is that Brian Gutekunst, as he often does, will continue to churn the back end of the roster by building the depth of a particular position group with an under the radar and not talked about addition. With minicamp taking place this week, the Packers could opt to have a few players in tryouts during those 2 days to see if anybody stands out. When dealing with the final spot on the roster, potential need can often take a back seat. Instead, teams are simply looking for the best player, someone who has a standout trait that’s worth taking a swing on and someone who can hopefully help evaluate the competition. Also, even from a numbers perspective, there isn’t a glaring potential need on the Green Bay Packers roster. Daniel Whelan has looked excellent through QTA’s and if the Packers bring in another punter it’s not because they feel like they need to find an upgrade. This move would be made to give Daniel Whelan some rest during training camp, so that he doesn’t have to handle every rep during the summer. Center is another position where the Packers could potentially search for depth. Josh Meyers has been handling center reps with the 1st team offense during QTA’s, and Jacob Monk with the 2nd team, but having another true center on the roster to work with the 3rd team could be valuable come training camp. Lastly, with the Packers switching to a 4-3 defense under Jeff Hafley, Brian Gutekunst mentioned over the offseason that the need for added numbers at the linebacker position could be a side effect of this shift. Time will tell when it comes to which direction the Packers will go but I would expect a move to be made sooner than later, and most certainly before training camp, so they have their full roster intact and ready to go by July 22nd. Go Pack Go 💚💚💛💛

    Dillon started running scared when he got to the NFL. Being in ACC Country, I watched him BASH in college but he ran like Jerome Bettis. This dude is huge. But when he got to the NFL he was so sketchy. He hit the line scared to fumble. Its so hard to watch after seeing him in college run like a BEAST. I wish he would run Angry again. He's a MONSTER who could easily dominate. But for whatever reason he choses not to. And spare me the whole "NFL is a different beast" argument. I know all of that. But watching him get the ball and then basically stop is hard to watch rather than him imposing his will hitting the line like a beast. Just my take..

    • @lswan1487
      @lswan1487 3 месяца назад +5

      I think scheme really plays into it. Packers use a ton of zone run, which asks the RB to read, react, and make a cut instead of running to a predetermined spot. He's not running scared or stopping at the line, it just looks that way because it's hard for 250 lbs to change directions and make cuts.

    • @OVRCOME
      @OVRCOME 3 месяца назад +2

      @@lswan1487 Thats a fair argument! I love having a healthy debate. But I also watched Aaron Jones hit the line at 100mph for years! Haahha I agree about cutting and such because Aaron was a much smaller back. But AJ could be a BOWLING BALL if he wanted to.

    • @ricardorivera7549
      @ricardorivera7549 3 месяца назад +2

      yeah i also feel that his first year he really looked like a potential feautured back in a couple of games. specially that snowy titans game he had like 2 touchdowns. now he dances and does too much before the LOS. like bruh, u are 250 pounds of muscle. we dont need you to go all the way, just hit the damn hole, put ur shoulder down, tire out the LBs and get the 3-4 easy yards for the first down. thats it. lol.

    • @lswan1487
      @lswan1487 3 месяца назад +4

      @@OVRCOME yeah, 100% agree about Jones, he could start and stop and go 0-100 in a heartbeat, it was a joy to watch.
      I think we see Dillon's bowling ball self come out more as a receiver, when he gets the ball in space and can just run at LBs. Crazy stat, he averaged over 10 yards per catch last year, tied for 2nd of all RBs with at least 20 catches. He just lacks the vision or agility (or both) to hit the cutback lanes on zone runs, so ends up running into linemen a lot more than linebackers.

    • @OVRCOME
      @OVRCOME 3 месяца назад

      @@ricardorivera7549 For sure. I was so pumped when we drafted him because I thought he would be the perfect compliment back to Jones. When we needed that 1 yard he would impart his will on LBs. But he’s dancing around and covering the ball prematurely before any contact. And I’m like just run north and south and pound someone. Maybe this year will be different now that he has true competition for that #2 spot. But that’s how felt last year when it was a contract year for him and Jones went out. I was like here we go AJ. Time to shine.. and…. Crickets…

      @@Basaraski thanks - I thought I had it last time you gave me that phonetic spelling, but now I'm not sure. I was reading it like 'sarah' rhymes with 'tada' like the magic trick word... but then someone else commented how it was helpful and they were reading it like the girl's name Sarah (now that I see it, that seems a more likely reading..?). So then I was back to not sure, haha.
      Second thing, I rarely (maybe never) hear you even say your nickname 'Bas', and have heard others say it a few different ways, so I'm not even sure how you pronounce that. Like 'bass', 'baas', 'baz'..? Anyway, thanks for replying again - not trying to belabor the point, just genuinely want to know how to say your name/s. ::)
      I get a million different wrong pronunciations of my last name, too, so I know the annoyance. That first 'e', it's like some people's brains just freeze when they see the letters. Have a good day and keep up the good work - I've enjoyed following the Packers with you for some years now.

    AJ Dillon's biggest problem is he was drafted by the Packers.
    The Packers, with the purest zone run scheme you ever did see, drafted the purest power runner in the league. Did they do anything else to add a power run element on offense? Nope, just small, mobile, linemen who move guys laterally instead of vertically. No FB, just H-backs too small to be inline TEs but too big to lead block.
    Not saying the Packers were wrong for this, the roster they built is perfect for the zone game, perfect for an agile 1-cut RB like Aaron Jones. It was just never going to work for an AJ Dillon. Put him in Baltimore, and I bet we'd see the breakout everyone keeps hoping for.
