Erdoğan might not have been on the ballets but he was in the election. His face was all over the AKP ads here and he was heavily involved in the campaigns. İmamoğlu is now his de facto rival. But its not just that CHP held onto İstanbul and Ankara. Its they flipped even elections in central Anatolia. And they did it without a coalition. It was expected that smaller parties, DEM in particular, would pull votes away from CHP but in reality it was AKP that suffered defections, many to MHP. The economy is atrocious and people are struggling. The west keeps going on about interest rates but the real issue of Turkish economy is the legacy of the Marshall Plan, transgenerational corruption and patronage politics, and rampant dollarization. No party is going to be able to fix that. Though AKP made no effort. All you need to know is that the Minister of Health owns the major hospitals. The Minister of Tourism owns the largest travel agency and resorts. More people are sick of AKP failures. Both the nationalists on the right and the secularists on the left feel like they are losing the country to Arabic refugees now given blanket citizenship. Turkey is a country of 80 million but since the Syrian civil war, and now the invasion of Ukraine, as many as 1 in 10 people here are refugees. Then there is Erdoğan going on TV saying he is tired and the next election will be his last. Putting himself in the campaigns then doing that caused a definitive presidential slump in his party results. The earthquake had little to no impact. Kahramanmaraş and Hatay went AKP. Hatay was a but close but Maraş was a blowout by AKP. No one on the left cares about them anymore after they still vote for AKP, including a large amount of Kurdish AKP members (so its not a black and white Kurds hating AKP that western media liked to portray).
